Your wife hates you. You hate the project and you hate the cabinet maker. You hate the painter. Obviously it's a little hyperbolic but... yeah. So just go in knowing you will "hate" everyone (unless you have a 2nd home you can move to) and you will have correct expectations of what this process entails. It's worth it though. With that in mind... we love our cabinets and the doors close softly and all the little dividers and drawers options they have. The cabinets are real wood and built to last. Very happy. read more

We had always been happy with Juan Luis's work on smaller projects around our property, so we contracted him for a much larger project in 2020 - a new roof and significant repairs to the exterior of our 100-year-old plus Victorian building, plus a full paint job. Juan Luis had worked on several other Victorian buildings in our San Francisco neighborhood so we felt confident in the quality of his work. Juan Luis and his team were very flexible and accommodating, working around preferences and needs of all 4 units in our building. They worked through the pandemic, the terrible air quality, and many other stressors of 2020. Really appreciate their dedication and pushing through to get the job done! Between Thanksgiving and Christmas of 2019 our bathroom was transformed by an industrious crew of workers from JL Fine Cabinets. Leading up to the work Juan Luiz and his wife, Suzanne, were of great help to me, first with the planning and then, with some shopping help from Suzanne who introduced me to good places to find the things we needed. Their knowledge of Victorian/Edwardian architecture was helpful in maintaining my desire to blend modern fixtures with my 1908 building. There were four of us living in the apartment as the remodel was done. The workers were friendly and respectful of the place and us, keeping the surroundings as clean as possible. The room was taken completely down to the studs, all floors, plumbing and electricity had to be changed and a nice shower area replaced the old claw foot tub. It was exciting to see things take shape. The new bead board around the lower part of the room and the original Victorian moldings combined with JL's beautifully made vanity, containing the Mexican sink, and frame for the mirror created the look I dreamed of! The drawers are so spacious I can store all of the towels in one of them. He even built a drawer which is shaped to enclose the plumbing so that space is not wasted. And, every time I shut the slow closing drawers, I smile. The shower area seems spacious, as well, perhaps because of the high ceiling that JL insisted I would appreciate when I questioned the dimension. He was right and was just one of the many ways I realized that I could trust his judgement. For a reasonable price our crowded, old fashioned bathroom became an eye-catching, convenient space. After having a few companies come out to bid our kitchen renovation, we had narrowed it down to JL Custom Cabinets and one other cabinet maker. We decided to go with Juan Luis do to our cabinets because of the overwhelming positive reviews on Yelp, as well as how many times they were willing to come out to discuss layout changes and show samples of their work. His prices were spot on and his quality showed in all of the samples. We have been very happy not just with the quality of the craftsmanship of his cabinets but with the customer service both he and Michelle provided. They were very happy to come out and fix any minor scruffs (as things happen during construction) and have made sure we were happy with every aspect of the cabinets. We asked the impossible and JL Fine Cabinets came through with flying colors. We needed a "kitchen's worth" of cabinets for our primary bath done before Christmas and didn't get the order in until the first week of December. This has been a long overdue review. JL and Co far exceeded our expectations! It was a chance we took and we are so happy with the results. Not only did they resurfaced our kitchen boxes and replaced our the doors, but they custom built our upper cabinets, leveled out our island and refinished our media center. It's a family run business where most communication was done with the son, Alex. We intially met with the father and daughter, Michelle who wrote up the contract and made sure we were all on the same page. From start to end, they finished everything in about 2.5 weeks. We definitely recommend them. These guys know what they are doing and it shows. Be sure to over communicate and detail everything you want or expect. We hired JL to reface our beach wood cabinets and in the process we decided to have them install Blum soft drawer closers as well. I highly recommend these soft closing drawers if you prefer a luxury feel when closing the drawers. We looked at 4 companies and JL came in with the best price. i didn't see any photos of refacing on Yelp at the time so I was hesitant to hire them and on top of that the young man who came out initially to see the house didn't seem confident in what he was selling. But I decided to roll the dice on hiring them. Then I met Michelle who brought over the contract. She assured me that they would tape off everything, take the drawers and doors to their shop, paint and install the soft closers, use the best paint possible and get the job done in under two weeks. Their taping job was amazing!! I immediately felt confident that they would do a great job. Alex and Gerardo who did the work didn't speak much English but they could understand what I would ask and were super friendly, quiet and fast. They ended up getting everything done in under two weeks. The finished job was better then I ever imagined especially for the price they wanted. There were about a dozen places that needed touching up mainly where you couldn't see unless you were really looking but they came out and touched up everything. I highly recommend them for refacing your kitchen, bathrooms or anything that needs to be painted. Note: Pulls were put on by a different company. read more

JL is an amazing contractor and carpenter who brings exquisite attention to detail, creative problem solving, and can-do attitude to any project. He has breathed new life into my 150-year-old victorian. Most builders these days care little about historical homes like mine, optimizing for ease at the expense of all else. JL cares enough to save trim and molding during demolition so the resulting product looks original. He picks up on architectural themes used elsewhere and incorporates them into his alterations. He also has great instincts on color - after several projects I've learned to save myself the agony and take his suggestions because they're always great. read more

He's extremely responsive, dependable, punctual, and highly skilled, and he goes the extra mile to make sure everything is done right and that the customer is happy. He also keeps his work area exceedingly clean and is careful to avoid damage to the house -- unlike other contractors I've worked with who gouge walls, scratch floors and leave dust and dirt everywhere. He hasn't built any cabinets for us (yet!), but he's helped us with restoring the window trim and the attachment of the mantle in our 100-year-old Victorian, and we can tell from his skill and attention to detail that he truly excels at fine carpentry, which is increasingly becoming a lost art. I had high hopes for this company doing my cabinets, based on their good reviews and a great consultation by the owner's son, an engineering student who was friendly and knowledgeable. He took down my email and said I'd be sent the quote in about a week. Still hadn't received the quote two weeks later, so I called to check. He said he'd sent it to my email. Told him I never received it and gave him my email address again. He texted and said he's definitely sent it to a different email and would resend it that afternoon. I texted him that evening to tell him I still hadn't got it. He replied that he hadn't had time and would send it the next day. This went on for another day before I just gave up and moved on to other bids. What an incredible waste of time on both my part and the company's! I hope his dad reads this and sees that the ball is being dropped big time. I'm sure he has no idea this is happening. I certainly wouldn't trust that communication or work would be good or timely during the project. I would've loved to have given my business to a family-owned company. read more
