Sometimes the simplest experiences are the best. It may sound weird to describe JM Curleys as a minimalist establishment but when you look at the few things on their food menu, they really have to down to an efficient science with what they serve. The adage of 'Don't do many things fairly but do a few things well" resonates with my experience here. Atmosphere: Part dingy speak-easy and part haute culture pub. There's no TVs with sports channels on over the bar, for example. Lots of exposed brick and wood furniture. Food: They take their cocktails and beer selection seriously. Decent prices that aren't too bad considering surround areas with less quality and same price, or higher price for similar microbrews. They have a few cheap-os if you're looking for something satisfactory but not too rich. The grub is comfort-food all the way with some higher quality ingredients (e.g. grass-fed beef for the burger is the only option) but the prices won't break the bank. The burger was good, salad instead of fries simple but fine. The deviled eggs were done fairly well for somewhere out of the south. The buttered popcorn everyone gets served does well, too. This isn't the place for a low-cal uber-healthy meal but the ingredients are quality. Service: Very attentive but easy-going. We never waited long for water to be refilled and we always politely asked about another beer when we were finished. Never felt rushed. Seating process didn't take long, albeit on a somewhat rainy day, and cheerful crew. No one looked rushed or stressed and yet all the servers seemed experienced. Price: $4-$13 for the draft beers, about $10 for more cocktails (but boozy), and 9-20$ for the entrees. Good range for whatever ales ya (pun intended). Many come here for an app and drinks alone. Overall a fairly reliable but nice place that kind of hits the spot. It's not something that I'm craving to return to all the time, but somewhere I'd have no qualms to revisit and feel they just do things well here. Straight-forward, no fuss. read more

The service I got here was absolutely horrendous. This was literally the first time I ever tipped $0 - the waiter took forever, despite the fact nobody was here. He took 30 minutes to ask us for another drink , so I went to the bar to get it done myself. He came back to the table and said ,"hey guys, just to avoid confusion order through me and not the bad." Just had a great lunch! Great service and wicked fresh, tasty food. Don't pay attention to the one stars reviews written by people who literally have only written one review on their Yelp account. Smells fishy to me. We almost turned away because of those and we are so glad we didn't. The BEST part about this place is they had Sip of Sunshine beer ON TAP! Which is so hard to find. What a great beer. I had the skillet Mac and cheese which I told my fiancé was hands down the best Mac and cheese I've ever had (and I've had ALOT of Mac and cheese). It was the perfect portion and perfect amount of cheesy inside with crispy on the top. Great flavor. My fiancé had the pulled pork sandwich with fries and fried pickles and enjoyed his. He did mention that it was a bit "saucy" and could have had more actual meat in it. It was difficult to eat because it was so saucy. Overall, great experience and we were so happy we found it. Subpar food and zero customer service. We were a table of four who ordered right from the brunch menu with no special requests. Order was clearly forgotten by our waitress and rather than apologizing, she made no eye contact with us for our entire 1 hour wait. In fact, I had to go to the bar on two different occasions to check on the status of our order and ask for utensils/napkins. Once the food finally arrived, we found the waffles to be dry, the burgers to be overdone and the grilled cheese to be chewy. We walked in at 6:30 on a Wednesday night and the restaurant was packed! Luckily it was still only a 25min wait for a table for dinner. The food was pretty good but pricey for what it was, probably due to location. We have two complaints. First it was incredibly loud in the restaurant. It was really uncomfortable to have any sort of conversation. The second issue is there was a really limited menu. The two of us shared a burger and the fried chicken. Had a pretty nice time here for dinner! The ambiance is really nice, feels almost like a speakeasy! However the music was really loud, I felt like I had to shout to have a conversation. As for food, the grilled carrots were a big hit with our group! It was a fun and unique way to enjoy a vegetable! For mains the wings were good, not great. One thing that I thought was weird is that you can get a side salad with a burger, but not as a side... For all the gluten free/low glycemic folks it might be great to add this as a menu option! The emphasis here is on burgers. They're great. As an alternative during lunch, you may look for a lighter alternative to a big juicy burger. The Chopped Salad would appear to be a good option, but ufortunately, the Chopped Salad is waaay loaded with very sweet, shredded marinated beets and doused with sweet Russian dressing. We asked if we could change the channel because there was a show on showing live ants eating children's hands while we were eating. We were so shocked that even the guy next to us turned and said I'm definitely not watching this show. After a long bus ride, walked here from South Station to warm up with a filling burger and a brewskie. The first time I came here was just for drinks (as it was way too packed to try to eat here). This time, plenty of tables open for a late lunch on a Friday afternoon. No one at the podium to assign me a table, so asked the bartender if I can grab one (she said yes). Eventually got my menu/water about 10 minutes later (waitress spent a lot of time in the back intermittently). A little surprised they only have one burger option for lunch, so went for that along with a fried egg on top ($16). Burger is juicy and not too large; served with a large pile of thin fries. Decent meal - going well with the IPA I ordered ($7). Overall I would say the place is your generic bar with fine bar food options. The food at Jm Curley did not disappoint. I had the mac n cheese, which was the best mac n cheese I've ever had in my entire life. I do not throw these titles around lightly so take note. Best mac n cheese ever! In addition to the food, the servers were attentive and friendly. The only negative about Jm Curley is the limited menu. I suppose that a limited menu means that they make those items very very well, but it does not open up many options for those stopping in at lunch time. The interior is small and cozy with exposed brick. It is dimly lit, but that adds to the atmosphere greatly. An awesome spot for a quick dinner and a great hang out with friends. I came in on a Saturday afternoon for the burgers. The restaurant was maybe 1/4 full, with bar seating on the left-hand side and two or four-top tables on the right hand side. It's not a huge space, so I can definitely see this spot fill up during the weekday lunch or dinner. tips * Lunch does not include the free popcorn :( * There is a secret steakhouse/restaurant in the area behind the curtain that says "Adults Only". It's like a restaurant speakeasy! 5 OZ GRASS FED BEEF PATTY The lunch burger is $10 and 5 oz, compared to $17 and 9 oz for dinner. The sesame bun is light, the burger is cooked almost rare and topped with grilled onions and pickles with ample thousand island dressing. It is a gourmet In-N-Out burger! It's clean, not too heavy or greasy, but super flavorful without being too salty. FRIED PICKLES The fried pickles are small enough to be bite sized with a light batter so you can eat a lot of these! Since we paired these with the burgers instead of french fries, we definitely had pickle overload, but if you're anything like Snooki and like your pickles, get these! The Filthington: A burger topped with fried bologna, Velveeta, tomato and mayo on white bread. Trailer trash? Yeah, but with a gourmet twist: it's all house-made... Well, not the Velveeta. I myself did not partake of this extraordinary creation, but the kitsch-inspired menu spread to the chopped salad I had in the HoJo's-esque parquet bowl. The mussels in broth were divine - so divine, in fact, we had to ask for more bread to soak up every last drop of the briny, smoky broth. There was nothin' tacky about that. The cocktail list was a thing of wonder --there were at least three items that spoke to me, but I ended up with the Lavender Pisco Sour, which was absolutely splendid. Take a traditional Pisco Sour, fluffy with egg white, slightly sweet with sugar syrup, sour with lime and bitters, and breathe just a hint of lavender into it. It was divine. The addition of dried lavender blossoms as a garnish made is stunning (yes, I took photos). The staff is also really impressive: we were immediately greeted upon entering, seated comfortably and our server appeared within seconds with water and menus. He was back soon enough to take our drinks order, and throughout the evening my water glass was never empty, I was never left wanting for anything and the bill arrived promptly upon request. It was all I could have asked for in a server. The decor as cool, too -- minimalistic with a warm, cozy feel. Not sure how they did that, but the poured concrete offset by exposed wood and grey leather seats was charming. I would happily return to this place for drinks and dinner... Perfectly cooked to order, incredibly juicy, very flavorful, and served with a heaping pile of fries--what's not to love? But what really blows my mind are the burgers of the week. I skeptically ordered one festooned with Doritos and Cheez-Whiz, which on paper is a horrible idea vomited from the brain of Guy Fieri. On the plate, however, it was an addictively delicious concoction that resulted in my sopping Cheez-Whiz and burger juices from the plate with fry remnants so as to not miss one salty, cheesy bite. Cocktails are delicious (albeit a bit smaller than I've grown accustomed to in the age of Super Sizing), but I am most drawn to the beer list. There are always interesting beers on draft, and when the night grows long, you can turn to the affordably priced canned beers to keep you going. I would be remiss not to mention the fried pickles. This place definitely fills a much needed void in the downtown crossing bar/food scene. They have in my opinion the best burger under $10 in Boston. It is perfectly salted and comes topped with russian dressing and onions that are so perfectly grilled they are more like a sauce. I love ketchup and put it on almost everything, but not this burger it is perfect just the way it is. The fries, which you have to pay extra for are well worth it, definitely quality over quantity in this case. It looks like one whole potato was thick cut, fried, then salted. They were excellent. The beer selection here is great especially considering the size of the place. You know those old school Slap Shot hockey arcade games, the one that plays like a foosball table... However, the respectful customer is always right, and the asshole customer is always wrong" "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's date, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor his grub, nor his cocktail, his barstool, space, nor anything that is thy neighbour's.No one on our staff goes by: Hey, Yo, Sonny, Tiger, Pal, Kid, Sport, Sweetie, Honey, Pork Chop, Chief, Champ, Captain, Boss, Buddy, Babe, Barkeep, Barmaid, Big Guy, Ma'am or Missy." "Just don't be a douchebag" FOOD QUALITY: Unfirtunately, I was only able to try the foie gras glazed strawberry-rhubarb jelly donut topped with basil crystals........seriously, see pic. But everything on the menu looked insane and like I said before, pub grub for 2015. I could tell by the donut they execute very well here, it was crispy on the outside, super fluffy on the inside, oozig jelly, slight notes of foie gras and basil crystals were a fresh, modern, welcoe touch. Each drink is balanced and garnished so well, I was blown away by everything I tried, including the smoked salt. PRICE POINT: Dead on for what you get. Nowehere on the menu do you overpay. There is a new fish in town and its a serious contender for best bar in Downtown Crossing...and there is some serious competition in the area. Doors opened 4 weeks ago and its been an amazing addition to the area. All of the staff is extremely nice and personable. Being a weekday night, Kevin (the bartender) even extended tastings to our table when we couldn't decide on what to order. A couple of things that stand out: - freaking dome table hockey (YES thats right). how many classy places you know have one of those bad boys -a private "adult" area....thats awesome - complimentary popcorn with daily changing flavors....i swear the day i went it was pork belly flavored popcorn and it was delicious A couple of things that might need improvement: -more cocktails. i thought a list of 10 cocktails was too few but its an up and coming bar and im sure they will add more to their list - presentation...many of the drinks were served just in a high ball glass, ice, and straw...very average looking, nothing stellar. they should take a cue from their neighbors at Drink to show you how to wow someone with cocktail presentation. Overall it was a great experience. What really made it was the friendly staff. With time I'm sure they will work out the kinks and have a well-oiled and well-intoxicated machine. read more

Jm Curley is the kind of place that I would spend too much time and money in if I wasn't married to a traditional pub guy. I think it has it all: delicious food, incredibly tasty and creative cocktails, a fun industrial atmosphere, and friendly staff. The first time I was there I ordered their signature burger as I had read it was one of Boston's best. And I must say, it lived up to its hype. The burger was flavorful and juicy, and the toppings complimented it perfectly. In addition, the bacon popcorn was the perfect starter and completely worth the cancer risk. My husband ordered the monte cristo (daily special) and I can easily say I have never seen anything so monstrous in all my life. Even the server commented about how heavy it was to carry. Hubs thought it was some sort of Food Network Challenge. Hilarious! Although he could only eat half, he said that half was very good. I've been there a few times since and each time I've sampled craft beers and one-of-a-kind cocktails. Even when it's been super busy, the staff is always smiling, friendly, and helpful. I was quite surprised to find this place packed on a Wednesday night! Luckily we only waited for about 10 minutes to be seated. The service was quick the entire night, which impressed me based on how busy they were. I shared the Fried Pickles, Duck Poutine and Lamb Sliders with one other person, and it was the perfect amount of food. Out of the 3 of them, my favorite were the Fried Pickles! Their simplicity was perfect, and they tasted fantastic with the creole mayo. I was a little disappointed with the Lamb Sliders because they were served cold, which I didn't expect. They weren't bad, but the idea of a cold burger slider isn't as appealing as a hot one. The Duck Poutine was another delicious dish, with a ton of duck meat and really good gravy! As a Canadian, I have high expectations for poutine and they were certainly met. I had a very enjoyable experience here, but the food was a bit over-priced, which is what keeps me from giving it a 5-star review. read more

I came here for drinks 2x after dinner and got seated immediately with a group of 6-10 both times. The service is spectacular and atmosphere is perfect. It's casual, cheap, and has amazing bar-snacks+drinks. A friend recommended it to me for their craft cocktails and I see why. They have their booze mixing down and a great menu. If you're looking for a small snack, get their house made cracker jacks. They're amaazzzing. I am so glad I was told about Jm. I hope I can try a full meal here one day. read more

This place is truly excellent. The staff is friendly and accomodating and friendly and friendly. The food is top notch. Even the free fancy popcorn is delightful. (Although, sorry Cappy, I can't get behind the bacon peanut brittle.) The cocktails are well crafted. The beer selection is divine. (The wine list looks decent too but, meh, look at the beer list and you won't want wine.) I read the "don't complain on Yelp" rules and I thought they were grand. "They weren't saying don't give us a crappy review," they were saying "listen, if you think something sucks, have the balls to tell us so we can fix it. If you're still not happy, THEN go write your crappy review." Seems fair and probably a good idea pretty much everywhere. The space here is hip and urban and industrial and nosy but not so nost you have to scream to talk to your mates in the main space but then they have this cozy intimate back room that would be grand for a snuggled up date or maybe a private event. The cocktails are expensive, stingy and weak. I don't mind paying for something well-done, so it's not the price. It's the price without the quality that I object to. And don't get me stahted on the silly nicknames they give to the food - some kind of speakeasy baby talk - it just adds insult to injury. It is walking distance from all lines. The venue itself is not particularly large, but it is plenty sufficient, whether one wants to sit down for a meal or at the bar for a drink. The exposed brick and hardwood floors are easy on the eyes, and set a tone that is appropriate for near any occasion. Beer options are very good. Though not quite as vast as some other establishments, they should always have something new for patrons to try. The burgers are delicious. I had their 5 oz natural beef patty, and Sona P. had the house veggie burger. At $7.50 and $7.00, respectively for lunch, they were good deals, especially when given the quality. My patty was not quite as juicy as I had hoped for it to be, but the flavor was rich, and "Pop's Russian Dressing" added a perfect twist. Though concretes are only on the late-night menu, they are offered all day and run $7. They were much thicker than I expected. $9 will fetch you an alcoholic version, but they are as weak as they are delicious - and they are very delicious. Solid venue. What gem, great romantic old brick building & wait staff was very accommodating. Complimemtary bacon greasy popcorn. Everything we ordered was good. Especially the juicy well seasoned chicken. Definitely worth a revisit. read more
