It's a bit hard to find, since the entrance, through a labeled set of double doors, is actually in the rear of the building. They put a small sign up along Allen Rd. during their business hours, but it can still be a bit hard to find. When you walk in, you'll basically only find a single counter pickup area. Behind the counter you can see a couple of shelves filled with bottles and sundries. It honestly doesn't look like a restaurant at all and instead looks like some kind of store or office building. They do share the storefront with the Brooks and Landry Catering Company, so I guess most of the items belong to the other business? As I walked in around 15 minutes after opening for a quick weekday lunch, I met a gentleman in line who had already gone to Motor City Meat Pies multiple times since it opened a week ago. It already seemed pretty promising and when I picked up my bag of food and the smell wafted into my nose, I knew I was in for a treat. Papas Bravas ($7.99) - There was a heavy smell of what I thought was ranch seasoning and potatoes filling the car as I drove home. When I opened the box and looked things over, I saw that I was totally wrong! I guess all of the ingredients blend together to smell kind of like ranch. Starting at the bottom, there are several layers of tender potatoes that have a bit of a skin from being fried. They don't seem to be fried crisp on the exterior, but that's possibly due to steaming in the box during my 5 minute drive home before digging in. I'll have to have them fresh in the car next time. I love how the potatoes are sliced into rounds instead of cubed or cut into strips ala french fries. On top of the potatoes is a generous layer of paprika, followed by a drizzle of garlic aioli and tomato romesco sauce, and finally sprinkled liberally with savory cotija cheese, black pepper, and fresh green onion. The amount of seasoning and salt is appropriate for the dish - there's not on overwhelming amount soaking into the potatoes, so it still allows the potato taste to come through. (4/5) Spanish Chorizo & Sweet Potato Hand Pie ($8.99) - The puff pastry crust is perfection, layered with a light crisp, and not too oily. The sweet potato is soft, earthy, and sweet with additional sweetness added from caramelized onion. Small pieces of red pepper dot the interior and the flavor pairs well with everything else. The manchego cheese seems to have mostly settled on one side, adding a fatty stretchy quality to that side. These are not your typical hand pies/empanadas. They are huge and stuffed to the brim. I was full after eating half (plus a bit of the papas bravas). (5/5) Motor City Meat Pies is a great addition to Allen Park. They are still in their soft opening phase, but I honestly didn't see much that needed to change or improve. I will be back in the near future to try their other hand pie flavors. Edit: I went back two weeks later and they already made some menu changes and added a couple of flavors. The Papas Bravas are now called 313-FRIES and they now have Beefeater and Lamb Sherpherd's Pies. Chicken, Bacon & Green Onion ($8.99) - I think the empanadas were fried a bit too long this time - the exterior was very dark and the shell was noticeably crunchier. The interior is filled with tons of chicken and broccoli, with some bacon, green onion, and red pepper dotting the inside. It's all enveloped in a gooey orange colored cheesy sauce. The Beefeater ($8.99) - Loved this one, my favorite of the three I tried in total. Filled with tons of ground beef and mixed with potato and carrot. It's super aromatic with rich beef flavor. Yum!
