This place has been here for years - and I think they're still using the same cooking oil. As we were waiting for our meal on a Saturday evening, I noticed the restaurants surrounding this place all had much bigger crowds. Then came our dinners. The popcorn shrimp, hush puppies and fries had all been fried in old, stale, greasy oil that coated the outside of the food. As the food cooled, we could scrape off the white grease with our fingernails. Gross. The only reason I gave 2 stars was b/c the ordering was quick & easy. Too bad the food was so awful. This place is so mid. First thing you notice when you walk in, is the lack of air conditioning, I'm sorry but if you are gonna basically fry everything you cook AND have an entire window wall your AC better be kicking it. Especially where we are in Texas. Absolutely no excuse for the hot atmosphere in this place. There were many people around us complaining about the heat in the restaurant and they were older people who traditionally speaking are always cold. Absolutely miserable to dine in. Food was meh. If yall are in the Kemah Area!!!! COME HERE for Fresh and Delicious Seafood!! They have incredible tasty fried shrimps and amazing hot crispy , beautifully breaded catfish. I got a 12 Piece Butterflied Shrimp and a piece of catfish for dessert ;) with some Hot Sauce mannnnnn that hit the friggin spotttt. Definitely coming back again and again. Incredible Service! This place for the money is ok but when we are in this part of Texas we have had much better seafood but at more expensive restaurants. If I were on a budget I would eat here again but for us we don't mind more expensive restaurants so we probably won't eat here again. The service was good and the restaurant itself is nice enough. Go, just go it's so, so good and fresh. We had the shrimp platter, catfish, and fried okra. The restaurant is very casual, old Kemah style. The woman who took our order was ultra friendly and nice. We would return again and highly recommend. read more

We were in town for a few days and staying within walking distance of this place, so we walked over for lunch one day. The vibe was "family dive" - and we loved it! Hubby got the oyster po boy, and his only quit bleeding was the tangy sauce they put on it. He wished he would have known it came with a side, because he would have gotten it on the side. I got one of the lunch special fried chicken sandwich options - it was nothing short of amazing! The chicken was larger than the bun, so I was able to cut off a piece to share with the hubs. We also got a side of fries and onion rings - both were top-notch. Can't wait to come back here next time we are in town! read more

Food - 2.5 Stars Atmosphere - 3 Stars Service - 4 Stars Laid back and a little "Divey" seafood restaurant with "fried everything", though they did offer some grilled and blackened options on some of their dishes. The facility was clean, and the staff were friendly. Generally, food was good, but I had the seafood platter and the fried oysters were fried to a crisp (as in waaaaay overdone) and the crawfish tails seemed to be the frozen variety and were very small, even for crawfish tails. It's been a while since we been back to Joe Lee's. We had just left Kemah Boardwalk with the little one and wanted seafood. I have never had a bad experience here. We came in probably about an hour before closing time and staff were very welcoming and amazing. Didn't get a picture of my wife's burger but she had their S.S.B.G ultimate and it was as she remembered it. My platter came out fresh, hot and everything was the delicious. Our greet, by the several cashiers on duty, was very cheerful. My wife joined me in the queue, with a single diner in front of us. It went quickly. We self-seated and, in about ten minutes, two hot, delicious meals were served. For me, breaded, fried catfish. My wife chose blackened redfish. Both meals came with side dishes, and a roll. Well, this place was a pleasant surprise! I've lived in Clear Lake a long time, but have never gone to this restaurant. You order at the counter, and they don't hesitate to give you suggestions if you ask. It's a very cool place to just sit and chill. Lots of fishing things to see on the wall. The food is delivered by the staff. The food was very good. He ordered the Boudin balls as an appetizer and it was some of the best Boudin I have ever tasted. I got the stuffed shrimp and it was four large shrimp which I thought would not be enough, but it was more than enough. My husband got the coconut shrimp and really liked it. I'm not a big fan of coleslaw, but I really liked theirs. Will I go back? You betcha! read more

Wow Kemah has unbelievable hospitality. We ordered the Wednesday special which was $12 for fried flounder, stuffed crab, shrimp slaw, and potatoes. We also ordered the redfish with shrimp, bread, and shrimp slaw. The food outclassed Pappadeaux's for price and quality. Definitely worth a stop. The flounder was light and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Never had stuffed crab; it seemed more doughy and couldn't detect any bits of crab in it. I have never understood what people see here and we keep trying. We finally decided that we're done trying. Today i ordered the burger that they rave over. It had some spice in the meat that i did not like at all. It was topped with cheap bacon and a couple of mushroom pieces. I asked for no bun so I appreciated that they added chopped lettuce on the burger for me. The fries were straight up out of the bag frozen fries. My husband gets the gumbo and he said there was very little substance as the shrimp were teeny tiny. He said it would have had to have improved quite a bit to be mediocre. The roll was good. We drove 38 miles from SW Houston into Seabrook, Texas (Clear Lake Shores) longing for tasty fried Texas Gulf shrimp and Flounder. We were pleased to find the shrimp as tasty as ever and contrary to recent stories we'd read about faux Texas Gulf shrimp it was good! However, when the flounder arrived we were shocked and disappointed in the lack of taste! The flounder was something other than flounder. It actually tasted like the "Basa" fish we'd had at some other places in Houston. We immediately Told the waitress that it wasn't flounder. We'd all had flounder before and that definitely wasn't flounder. The Cole slaw was missing flavor which was also disappointing and the red sauce along with the tartar sauce use to be so much better. I'm going to say that the fries and shrimp were still good and I'll stick with that next time. The restaurant interior is very welcoming and the ladies working the floor and cash register are very friendly. I should have requested a refund on the fish but decided to bring it home for the neighbors cats. I just couldn't see it being thrown in the trash. Joe Lee's use to be our favorite spot down near Kemah. I'm sure time will pass, we'll forget about last night's experience and we'll drive back for another attempt. read more

This place doesn't look like much from the outside. The inside isn't fancy. Don't let the looks and aesthetics fool you. The food is GOOD! The portions are generous. I was in town visiting with friends. We were headed to Kemah Boardwalk but decided we needed lunch first. This place is counter service, so we were able to place our order and find seating for our group of 7. Food came out hot and fast. My son had the chicken tenders. I had to break them up because they were hot, and you could see the steam coming out. The blackened fish and shrimp were tasty, with just enough spice to give it a kick. The rice and green beans were a complimentary side. When we come back into town, we will definitely go back. read more

Super good seafood at Joe Lee's! I visited after coming back from a cruise, Kema is only about 20 mins away from our port in Galveston. I found this place on Yelp and I'm so glad I tried it. I went early in the day around 11am when they open. We were greeted right away and given a lot of suggestions of popular items I enjoyed the Cajun catfish, which is fried catfish with étouffée on top. My sides were the shrimp slaw and Cajun rice. The catfish was nice and crispy- everything made fresh that day. The Cajun rice was packed with flavor and shrimp slaw almost tasted like a seafood salad- very good. I was was also impressed with fish taco, simply made and delicious- the put a couple strips of catfish, cabbage and a creamy avocado cilantro sauce that I put on everything!! The food was beyond what the reviews stated. The portions are big, and each bite is so flavorful. The boudin balls were so delicious and the ranch tasted homemade. We shared a Shrimp platter and it was enough for both of us. The rice - best cajun rice and the different shrimp were so flavorful!!!
