We were looking for some late night eats in the area and as I was reading out the yelp options for what was open, my husband asked "What are gizzards?" so of course I had to bring him here so he could find out for himself. I think he went a little bit overboard however (as usual) because he ordered the gizzard sampler platter which came with plain, garlic & herb, and cajun chicken gizzards because he wanted to try them all. He admitted he should have just tried a small order. He did like the gizzards and they give a good amount of dipping sauces, but he said it was just way too much so we ended up throwing about half the order away. I ordered the deep fried olives to start and the smothered chicken for my meal. I love olives and the deep fried ones were tasty but a bit heavy and oily and if I'm being honest, i would have preferred just the olives themselves as an app. I did finish them later but it's definitely another item you have to eat in moderation. I personally though the potatoes with my meal were terrible. I like to eat potatoes without gravy but it wasn't possible with these. My husband drowned them in gravy and ate them for me. The chicken was fine though and the mushrooms were tasty. We went inside to order but ended up taking our meal to go. There was music and games and the employees and owner were very friendly but this is definitely a bar vibe spot where the locals come to drink and everyone knows each other. They had really good wifi and most importantly, my husband got to experience gizzards for the first time so I am glad we stopped in. read more

The atmosphere here is a classic small town bar. The most glaring feature is it has maybe the most textured ceiling I've ever seen. That being said it has a very positive feel to the place. I ordered the Triple D Burger ($15). A 1/3 lb Cheeseburger with pickles, onions and a slice of tomato, deep fried in Joe's Famous Batter Mix. This was made famous on the TV show "Diner's, Drive-ins, and Dives." The burger was very unique. The batter is excellent and it was cooked perfectly. I enjoyed the burger and I recommend it for the experience. It is a very good Burger, it's just not in my top 10. Top 15? Maybe. I think my biggest issue was the meat itself, it was a little bland in taste and texture. The frying also gave the cheese a slightly odd mouth feel. I think next time I'd try just the regular batter burger, which is just the patty fried, not the whole thing. I enjoyed the fries that came with it, they were very tasty. I also ordered the 4 piece Chicken Dinner ($17). This has Tender chicken battered in Joe's batter mix fried to perfection. I got this to go and reheated in the oven and air fried to re crisp the next day. It came out perfectly. It was excellent. Super tasty and tender and the batter is excellent. I can only imagine it's even better fresh. I very much recommend the chicken. The service was super friendly and everything was very efficient. Hell yea, if you're a fan of gizzards the way I am then you just found paradise. It ain't the cleanest, nor the dirtiest, but if you want the most tender gizzards they melt in your mouth. I have heard from others that the food has gone down hill here. Used to go there a couple time a year. (Lived 30 miles away) But haven't been in in a couple years, but the gizzard were really good. Wife and I went last night. It's the first day of Gizzard Fest 2022. There was about 10 customers at the time. The gizzards were chewy and just little balls of grease (dripping). My wife had a burger that came to the table cold and dried out. We only ate half of our meals. Waitress gave use our bill and we gave her the money. She brought back the change, but not a copy of the bill. Kind of surprised. We are in our 60's and have always received a copy of the bill with the change everywhere we have ever been. My wife questioned the change she got back so we asked the waitress to get us a copy of the bill. Upon getting the bill we noticed that our change was shorted $4. (No matter how the food is we always pay the server a 20% tip anywhere we go.) (the server didn't cook it) But, in the end it turned out ok because the tip would have been $6. But, i guess she only wanted $4. So that's what she got. read more

Our visit to Joe's Gizzard City was definitely the highlight of our recent trip to mid Michigan to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with my in-law's - other than the non-stop daily homemade goodies, of course. Gizzard is one of my all-time favourite snacks and I like them crunchy with lots of different texture. Joe's gizzards on the menu are served batter fried, naked fried, naked nuked, with herb or garlic. I order a full size order with half batter fried and half naked fried. Although I was a little disappointed that the gizzards were very tender instead of crunchy, the crispiness of the surface from the deep frying as well as the flavour totally make up for the tender texture of the giblets. The dessert section of the menu tenders deep fried cheese cakes, deep fried Oreo cookies, deep fried nutter butter, deep fried ice cream sandwiches, deep fried chocolate chip cookie dough and deep fried Twinkies. I was very tempted by the cheese cakes but my dining party settled on sharing the deep fried nutter butter since we had been feasting on homemade NY cheesecakes for the holiday at home. If it weren't for airfare costing over $600 per round trip from where I live, this place could easily be my weekly guilty pleasure! The Triple D Sandwich (i.e. Monte Cristo) will be my order on my next visit. P.S. Don't expect anything more than a dive but Joe, the owner, is extremely friendly. He welcomes his guests if he happens to be hanging out in the outdoor courtyard by the front door. He went up to every table to say HI to the patrons during our dining. He told us his experience of being featured on Diners, Drive-In's and Dives and was extremely grateful of the publicity that Guy Fieri brought him even though he had to shut down for 2 days. read more

Our son and his wife live in the Lansing area and when we asked him where he wanted to go for his birthday he said that he wanted Joe's Gizzard City. We were looking forward to it because we had wanted to stop in for some time and I work with a colleague that was friends with Joe in college and has said good things about this place. Eight of us showed up early on Saturday, March 18, and were greeted quickly. We really liked the dive atmosphere of the joint. Our server was very nice and witty. He made sure our glasses stayed full the entire time and was willing to answer any questions we had. We opted to start with both the Gizzard Sampler Platter, which included Garlic & Herb, Cajun and Traditional gizzards. We also ordered the Dessert Sampler, which included 1 Deep-fried Cookie Dough, 2 Joe Nuts (Deep-fried mini donuts), 2 Deep-fried Oreo cookies, 2 Deep-fried Nutter Butters and 2 Elephant Ear Sticks w/Raspberry Sauce on the side. Even though my family is all from the Deep South, and are quite familiar with chicken gizzards, I had never eaten gizzards before our visit here. All of us enjoyed the gizzards and were pleasantly surprised at how tasty they were. It was nice that they weren't drowning in grease even though they were deep-fried. Needless to say, the dessert sampler was huge success. Each of the dessert items were delicious but weren't drowning in grease. Each of us ordered different entrees but the one that caught me by surprise was the request that an uncle made. He asked if they were serving the "boiled dinner". I had never heard of such a thing before this but apparently Joe knew what it was and was serving it. I seriously have to give them bonus points for this! One thing we enjoyed was being able to sit at the large table in the back and not be rushed out the door. We were able to take our time and enjoy the food, the occasion and the time spent with family. At one point, the server saw my wife at the jukebox and gave her credits for choosing songs. So, we had the privilege of listening to Mumford & Sons as we ate our food. Overall, we had a great time. The food was tasty, prices were fair, and the service was pleasing. I'm gizzard-agnostic at best, so I enjoyed this place not for the mountain of gizzards but for devotion to an unusual premise and for its embodiment of rural Americana. The decorations help, including the old-timey advertising signs that extend to the bathroom, but more important was the sense that the workers seemed truly appreciative of the visitors (many drawn here by Guy Fieri, Yelp reviews indicate.) Gizzard purists might try "naked nuked" or "naked fried," while the gizzard-phobic may be the happier with the classic battered version, and mixing/matching is allowed. read more

Saw this place on Triple Ds. This is a nice pub place with a hometown feel. Great service. The triple D burger was very juicy and succulent. Never had a deep fried burger, this was great. The town is "Gizzard City". I was use to having Gizzards from the south which are tough, the ones made here were beer battered and soft. Deliciously soft. With the marinara sauce the tasted like Rhode Island breaded clams without the fishy flavor. Awesome. The only reason that I did not score a 5 was the wait. Truth be told they were busy. Had a wonderful late lunch here. Came specifically for the gizzard and was not at all disappointed. Tried the sampler, and my favorite was the cajun flavor, but the herb and garlic were nice too. The burger, with the works, dipped in beer batter and deep fried, was so tasty and now I can cross it off my bucket list. The baked pretzel was huge and perfectly baked and salty. So I heard about this place from my stepmother (of whom I really like - no kidding!). She knows I like food that most people avoid. Pickled tongue, smoked clams, sauteed chicken livers, fish heads and necks, bull testicles, etc. are all some of my favorite and exciting foods for me to eat - I like the unusual, and enjoy creative presentations of these oddballs. So, she was very excited to tell me about this place that specializes in Gizzards. I was having a slow work day, and decided to road trip it on my motorcycle - what could be better than an afternoon stab on the road to git me some tasty gizzards!?! I couldn't disagree with myself, so I hit the road. I was pretty excited by the prospect of a place that touts gizzards as a major menu draw. Upon my arrival, mid afternoon, I was happy to see a Bell's Oberon special for $3 bottles, so I ordered an Oberon, and the Gizzard Sampler platter off the appetizer section of the menu. I imagine this platter is pretty popular for first timers at Joe's, for it offers four styles of gizzard preparation. My platter arrived, and my waitress pointed out each quadrant of near identical appearing, but differently flavored gizzards. My expectations of greatness started to diminish when I realized the 'garlic' version amounted to someone sprinkling powdered garlic over the deep fried nuggets, not very promising.....Anyway, I unhesitatingly picked one up, dipped it into the red shrimp cocktail sauce (? why cocktail sauce?) and popped one in my maw. The first thing that I thought is "MUSHY". Oh noooooo........... I read that Joe's pressure cooks the gizzards to soften em up, but jeezuss, but there is absolutely no texture to these gizzards - they're mush. And, after trying all four styles on my plate [it was impossible to tell if they were flavored differently, aside from the obvious use of old garlic powder], the breading used is identical. These poor gizzards have WAY too much breading on them, and the breading somehow manages a real rare trick - to be both a sponge for the deep frier oil, and be flavorless at the same time, and yet hermetically contain a watery juice from the gizzards to be released upon the first bite - squirty! Combine that with the mushy meatlets of the gizzards and you truly have a plateful of drech. Joe's, I hope your fryer chef was hungover, or having a PMS attack, or even generally having a real bad day, and threw in yesterdays re-frozen pre-breaded gizzards for my dismal platter, for there's really no excuse for such awfulness. I'm at a loss as to how something so simple, and so potentially delicious, could turn out to be such an abject failure. Thank Crom! for my Bell's Oberon to wash the graveyard taste from my mouth. I really, really wanted to like these so much. That said, I am a bit embarrassed for Joe's Gizzard City to place so much of it's notoriety on such a miserable offering. I believe my wife and I were sitting in the booth adjacent to the previous reviewer (Patrick G) as that couple was from Indiana and we heard Joe tell them almost nothing on the menu was homemade. This was Sunday afternoon, July 26. I had the gizzard sampler and can't recommend it - as the previous reviewer mentioned the gizzards were mushy, tasteless and the batter was too heavy - think tempura-battered sort-of-meat-flavored jello. Although the sampler supposedly had four different kinds of gizzards I couldn't tell any difference between any of them except that some of them had this strange orangish powder dusted on them. The cocktail sauce they served with the gizzards seemed to have sit in the fridge for about a week too long as it was too thick for dipping, you had to use the gizzard as a scoop to get anything at all on them. We split an order of chili cheese fries - the fries were frozen and the chili was canned. I think the cheese was real, though ;-) My wife had a cheeseburger which she said was fairly good but I won't be going there again. read more
