We have been coming here for years. When the women are cooking the food is excellent. When the men cook it's terrible. This picture shows the not baked ziti. The Greek salad was mostly iceberg lettuce and very small amount (like a tablespoon of feta). Half a tomato chopped up and 5 small calamata olives. Just skimpy. My baked lasagna was mostly sauce and cheese. Barely any pasta in it. We know you can do better. But typically only when the women are doing the cooking. read more

This is the summary of three different visits this year. Sometimes you have a local restaurant that does one dish that makes your tastebuds elatedly shimmy and shout, but their other dishes are just average. Sometimes you have a restaurant that features a particular cuisine, and does it wonderfully, but their grilled cheese sandwiches are just blah. And sometimes you just get nothing right. Ghost Kitchens galore on Dave's Store Lane, Joe's Pizza, I'm looking at you. I don't like having to say this about a local business, but there is just too much going on for me not to comment where other consumers might see it, and save their hard-earned dollars. This collection of ghost kitchens is a disaster. I'm sure many of us have experienced them, but if not, a ghost kitchen is when one restaurant leases out their premises for a new concept, delivery only, in most cases. Sometimes the ghosts have menus and their own cooking staff (unusual), but many other times mom and pops work different concepts under the same roof of an established business. iHOP hosts Thrilled Cheese. Buffalo Wild Wings is also Bird Dawgs. It is a way to test the local area and play with marketing. It is a great idea if it is done right. A problem if not. And at Joe's it is all about a mish mash of cuisines, nothing done wonderfully. We all like variety, but this isn't that at all. It is chaos. A bunch of different concepts thrown in a blender that don't work and are little more than dive-bar sludge. They aren't the Cheesecake Factory, who manage to execute s very diverse menu seamlessly. Nobody goes to Dave's Store Lane for variety and they certainly don't order from what sounds like an interesting new place, only to get inedible food. They can't master the basic Italian dishes that have been on the menu forever, so please don't expect them to execute new dishes and cuisines. Ghost kitchens that seem to be housed at Joe's Pizza and Subs include: Chateau Schawarma Cupid's Wings Saint Pita Philly fresh Cheesesteaks Just Wing It Bob's Kabobs Brooklyn Calzones And possibly more... Haven't been here for a while, so wanted to try it again now that it is under new management. Ordered the Athens pizza. It was the perfect blend of mozzarella, feta, sweet onions, gyro meat and tomatoes! Their homemade tomato sauce and crust was amazing too! Service was great and the price was even better! Great spot to dine in or carry out. Their liquor license should be active very soon, so if your pizza goes down better with a cold brew, your wait is very nearly over. read more

This place has been in Haymarket forever. We first went to this place back in 1999 when we moved to the area. It has since changed ownership, but remains a stable in the area. We love the pizza and subs. I'm just not sure how it stays in business. We normally do carry out on a Friday night. It's always dead inside, so I am guessing they get most of their business on delivery/carry out and not dine in. The inside show's its age and is dated, but it's clean and simple. We go for the pizza. The price and quality are both are on point. I just hope this place makes it. It just never seems to be busy. read more

I had the Zep hoagie sub to go - their version of the Italian sub. Not sure what it was about this sub - the bread seemed really doughy - it just was not a very good sub. The french fries were better. The inside of the place is a strange mish-mash of decor, materials, and whatnot. It looks like the place was built in segments - each section looks like it was built with different materials. You'll note one section has oak, and another has pine, and so on. Then the bar area is kind of weird - there is a sliding glass door separating the bar from the rest of the restaurant. Will never do it again! Order for delivery, place tip on order. Young man takes it to the wrong address and calls me to tell me it is on the porch. Food is nowhere to be found. Call back and person at the store assures me he right at my house. No driver. I call back and ask for refund. Person on the phone says ok and hangs up. My wife and I ordered take-out while we sat in the parking lot since you cannot go inside due to COVID-19 precautions. I ordered a cheese steak with fries and my wife ordered a veggie sub with fries. The food was brought out to our car within ten minutes and it was hot and really good. The cheese steak had plenty of meat on it and the fries were just the right amount of crispy. The man that always answers the phone was just plain rude and hung up on me because I questioned their "meatballs" topping on my pizza. Although the "best wings in town" turned out to be the most flavorless wings in town, my experience was still pleasant. The subs were so juicy and delicious and the service was perfect. Due to covid, we had to do curbside pickup but they called to inform the food was ready which is very pleasing because that way our food wasn't sitting out for too long. Pizza is great. thin, NY style and they use the fresh mushrooms instead of the canned version on the pizzas, which I like. I order here about once a week. The only thing preventing a five star review is the cleanliness of the dining rooms and the bathroom. The bathroom is a turn off and needs work. Done with Joe's. Their food used to be good, and their delivery reliable and quick. However, the last 3 times we've ordered (within the last month), the orders have taken over an hour to deliver, and when I call to inquire, I've gotten the same line every time: "The order has gone out for delivery you should get it any second now." After that, it takes at least 15 more minutes to arrive. I live 10 minutes from Joe's--if you have to stop for every light on the way. This latest time, the woman on the phone used the "we are very busy on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, so it takes more than an hour" excuse. Today was Thursday, but the other times we've had problems, it was Monday-Wednesday, which I know because of my work schedule. The last order, my wife said the pita tasted odd--we didn't make a fuss. But no more. As I write this, it's been 20 minutes since they said it would be "any second now". And that was after I'd waited 75 minutes from placing the order. read more

My steak and cheese sub was pretty greasy and the fries were not cooked crispy. The meatball sub were little round balls probably previously frozen. I ordered an iced tea and got a Coke instead. Recently moved to Gainesville from Ny. So, checked out few places where i can order food with peace of mind. I only put the effort in posting a review if i am repeatedly been amazed by the quality and taste of food or repeatedly been disappointed. Happy to say i found this place. Its little hidden since its off the main high way on the side. The menu is just amazing, huge selection of food which is great as i brought hearty appetite with me. Kitchen is well organized, the manager, she choreograph the entire kitchen staff beautifully. So all meals are cooked and packed for delivery/carryout well one time. Which is a peace of mind for me (as i am very picky); because i know when i do delivery order from here, an extremely responsible manager is there in the kitchen. I will whole heartily recommend Chicken Taco Pizza. Very delicious and taco sauce for it is very flavor full. kitchen is open and observable, so i could easily see when they made pizza and the inner-workings of their kitchen. All the ingredient they put on the pizza was fresh. Chicken kabob is another dish i will absolutely recommend to any one. It was handled/made very neatly. The steak sub here is also one of the best. I will also recommend eating in restaurant or picking up food if you have time. Because as i observed they get very busy certain hours. Even with amazing management skills of the young lady who was managing the entire kitchen staff in orderly manner. Delivering food for drivers can take time. She was straight forward and honest in giving out the delivery time, upon my query. All in all very happy i found a good place, where i can pickup or order food with peace of mind. I like everything about this place, the pizza, the subs, even the 70's-style-diner atmosphere. You have to remember, this place started when the Atlas Iron Works made up 99% of the population of Gainesville, the other 1% probably being Joe. The "Zep" is great, but if you want true sub bliss, you gotta try the Steak and Cheese with everything. If I don't get one of these at least once a month, I start getting cranky. Their pizza is the best around for miles--I think it's 'cause they make their own dough, for the subs, too. I like the calamari, it makes a good starter. I'm reluctant to recommend Italian restaurants because I'm very picky. This is my first exception. I've told all my friends to try a pie and the super Italian Just to clarify a few things. The location is a bit awkward but that's just how things are when a community grows like we have. Also, for a brief time, this location was ran by other owners (former chef) and then shut down. The original family has remodeled and reopened with their classic recipes. So don't let the location or posts about the other owners distract you from a great meal. And they deliver! I heard that Joes recently had a change of ownership. I cannot vouch for the quality of the food during the previous ownership because my family never ate there, but currently Joes is consistently delivering quality pizza, wings, and appetizers at a good price. Their wings are on par with a few other legitimate "non-chain" restaurants, but I actually feel that Joes wings are the best. Their pizza is also great. The crust is a mix between hand tossed and thin. It's chewy and has a slight crisp. The sauce is good, as are the toppings. To date we have also ordered their Jalapeño poppers, fried mushrooms, and Fried zucchini. All of which were very good. Unless you are searching for a "2 items for $12" coupon at one of the local chain restaurants, I highly recommend you give Joes a shot. I think you may be happily surprised! read more

Dead mouse inside our order bag-We just purchased from joes pizza and it will be the last time ever. When opening the plastic bag that contained two styrofoam containers inside, a dead petrified mouse fell out of the bag after I reached under the first container. I called the store and was hung up on twice. Only after we texted the manager pictures of the dead mouse was our order refunded. The manager said to us "we shake out the boxes to make sure they are ok". The whole order went in the trash. Never again will we order from Joes! read more
