Ordered delivery from here tonight via slice. The pizza came, it was hot and tasty! We got a large pepperoni pizza and a large pizza rustica, a white pie with ricotta and ham. Overall, the pepperoni was pretty good, the sauce had a nice tang to it and the pepperoni was good. It was a thin crust that was a little "floppy" if we're using Dave Portnoy terms but the crust was crunchy. The white pie (pizza rustica) was okay, not too much flavor on it and I felt as though there was not enough ricotta on it. What makes a great restaurant experience?..... The food? The ambiance? The value? The owners?.......yes, yes, yes, and yes! But there also other things for me that make me want to come back.....Passion and experience. Up until a week ago, Joes Pizza in Martinsville, NJ was just another NJ pizzeria that I drove past whenever I drove thru Martinsville. At the recommendation of a long time friend, who first told me that the owner is Salvatore Pasalaqua, a name I was familiar with from a pizzeria that my family and I frequented in the 1970's and '80's in my home town. Then he told me "his pizza is GOOOOOOD! I knew I had to go! His pizza is a crispy thin crust, not a cracker thin crust but some of the thinnest hand thrown crust I've ever had. His sauce and toppings are perfect and appropriately distributed and that crisp bottom is just perfect! Tonight we tried some entrees; she had the eggplant Parmesan and I went old school and had Spaghetti and Meatballs. I'll often have this as a gauge when I visit a new to me Italian restaurant. If the meatballs aren't homemade, I won't go back. Joes meatballs are tender and mostly meat. They're seasoned well and I thoroughly enjoyed them. It was so refreshing to not have to ask for my pasta cooked al dente. In fact, I usually do but this time I forgot and how refreshing it was to be handed a plate of pasta that was indeed perfectly al dente! The Eggplant Parmesan was damn near perfect! Nice and soft, not bitter, and an ample amount of mozzarella. How happy I am to have a goto place for red sauce Italian food being served in a pizzeria atmosphere as opposed to a sit down, white tablecloth place. My girlfriend referred to the place as a step higher than most pizzeria's and Joe and his wife couldn't be more friendly and grateful that we chose their place to spend our dining dollars. My family has been eating here since the original Joe owned it. Even with new owners, the food is amazing, if not better. The lasagna is swimming in sauce, which is personally what I like, but keep that in mind if it's not your preference. The cavatelli broccoli is usually in need of a little salt, but other than that is another favorite. The rice balls are always perfect and crispy. The pizza itself is really amazing, great sauce, great crust, great everything. I really wish I saw this place get more business because the owners are very nice and work very hard. Love Joe's. Simple menu, outstanding traditional Italian food, reasonable cost, and good people who own. Great thin crust Italian pizza. Dough is chewy and crisp at the same time with nice tomato sauce and right balance of cheese. I actually enjoyed the eggplant parm the most. We came all the way from Berkekey Heights after hearing great things about Joe's Pizza. . .and we are so glad we did! Date nights are hard to come by so we brought the whole family (and a bottle of wine) for a casual night out. We started with the buffalo wings and garlic knots. Both appetizers were devoured in short order and despite the generous portions, we were eager to try the pizza. Our margherita and eggplant pies were obviously made fresh and the thin crust. was. on. point. I loved the leaves of fresh basil on both pies, and the ratio of cheese:sauce:crust was perfection! We were there for quite some time and saw several returning customers come into the shop who obviously agreed with our assessment. The pizza is average in my opinion, the two others I was with sort of agreed. One said they didn't like it b/c there wasn't enough cheese on it. Ok fine, I hear you but its still average.. The other thought it was good, I didn't take what they said to heart b/c they come from down south which doesn't have nyc style pizza. I grew up in nyc and nj, so this is average for NY/NJ, it will be good if you are from out of state. The chicken parm sub- From what I remember b/c it was a while ago, the bread was over toasted which I don't like when its so hard its crumbling everywhere and you are left with a dry tongue. After you get past that part it was pretty good. I haven't been back in a while but now that I am writing this review, I think I will have to stop by there the next time I stop by. It's really difficult to find decent pizza in this area of New Jersey as most people know. Other locations are either okay or way way overpriced. Joe's Pizza on the other hand is reasonably priced and very very good. I wouldn't go out of my way to compare it to anything in NYC but it's pretty darn good pizza for the area and probably the best my fiance and I have tried locally. I agree the ingredients have changed, they started using lower quality ingredients. The last few times I've had a grandma pizza or margherita pizza is wasn't any good. The cheese steak is bad too. There's to many pizza places to go to one on the decline. read more
