Whenever I traveled back to Richmond from St. Louis or Bentonville on Friday mornings, I always stopped here for my go-to order: "two, no onions." I love their homemade mustard, the chili, and the perfect snap of the hotdog casing. These days, I use the spot to meet up with former colleagues--one of whom has been coming here even longer than I have, often bringing his kids. Unfortunately, during our visit today (July 10, 2026), that years-long customer loyalty didn't seem to matter. As I sat at the counter with my colleague finishing our drinks and catching up, the owner, Joe, pointed at us and abruptly asked if we had paid. We had, of course, because you have to pay before they even hand over the food. When Joe repeated the question, my colleague asked if he wanted us to leave. Joe responded, "I am about to play that card," claiming they were getting busy. While it's good that business is booming, there were still open tables on the floor and two empty stools right next to us at the counter, not to mention outdoor seating. I'm not telling people to avoid Joey's for the food. The place is clean and the hotdogs are genuinely good. But when you walk in and see that vintage, 1950s-style sign welcoming you to "step up, introduce yourself, and place your order," it rings entirely hollow now. Joe should take that sign down and replace it with "order, pay, eat, get out." There is nothing welcoming about the service anymore. Joey's has seen the last of me. read more

Joey's was highly recommended by my brother, so I went here for a nice quick lunch. The Food: I had to order the classic Joey Dog here. I ordered two "All the Way" and the other two "Mess 'Em Up". The hot dogs were delicious! They had a very nice snap to each dog and all the condiments/toppings paired very well with each other. The Service: Service was very good! The owner, Joey himself, was working the hotdogs and the food came up real fast. All of the staff here are incredibly nice and welcoming as well. The Atmosphere: Upon walking in, you immediately get hit with a nostalgic/old timey feeling. The decor and setup of the place just feels nice and welcoming, with history behind it. There's plenty of tables to sit at, and there's a bar area for you to sit at too. The restaurant is very clean as well! Overall, a 5/5! Absolutely recommend Joey's Hot Dogs! The service at Joeys is always friendly and they always thank their customers. They are the example of what customer service should be anytime you visit a restaurant. The restaurant is always clean and they work hard and fast to clean up after people in the dining area. They do have interior and a few sidewalk tables with umbrellas outside for outdoor dining pleasure. They do have sides that they offer as well like Potato Salad, Italian Pasta, macaroni Salad, Coleslaw and a selection of chips. They have fountain drinks or you can get canned sodas. They even have a selection of bottled sodas. For sweets they have Brownies, cookies and an ice cream float. They even have popcorn to eat or take with you. The dogs they serve are the regular Joey Dog, all beef dog, turkey Frank and a veggie dog. They all have pork brats and pork veal brats and a New York Hot sausage. I have found my new favorite place to get the one food a Gluten sensitive person can have hotdogs. I loved everything about my hot dog with the works on gluten free bun. The potato salad is deliciously made and pairs wonderfully the hotdogs. I am not sure they have gluten free chips but if they do I will buy the those too. Joey's Hot Dogs is such a cute place - when you step inside, it literally warps you back in time, retro-style! The menu offers wieners that are handcrafted exclusively for Joey's by Usinger's, coming in different styles - such as the Original Norfolk 'Snap' Wiener, the German Bratwurst, the New York Hot Sausage, the Veggie Dog, etc. We ordered 'The Joey Dog', which uses the recipes back from 1939, 'All the Way', which came with mustard, onions, and the their homemade chili (I actually didn't mind the sausage, but the bun was slightly stale); the New York Hot Sausage (contained fresh red peppers; this was definitely super spicy, but I wasn't a fan of the super soft texture of the sausage; the bun on here was definitely more fresh and soft), also 'All the Way'; a side of potato salad (country style; this was super creamy and so delicious!); and, a side of Macaroni salad (another winner - this had a hint of sweetness, and the pasta was cooked perfectly al dente, generously dressed!). I honestly thought the sides, that are made fresh in-house daily, were the stars of this place! We went in today for the first time, and it was GREAT! I was greeted as a friend by Joey as I came in the shop; a nice looking place, with everything clean, black and white tiles, and lots of seating inside and out. I shared that we were first-time customers, and he quickly reviewed the menu (easy to read on the wall). My wife had an original (onions, mustard and chili sauce) along with redskin potato salad; I had an original with just chili sauce and onion, and also a delicious beef and veal brat, and the same potato salad. They and the potato salads were delicious! My wife got a second original after her first, which is very unusual. We came in thinking we wanted Chicago-style dogs, but I am glad we had Joey's Norfolk-style instead. There is a selection of different kinds of hot dogs, bratwurst, and other sausages along with two different potato salads, macaroni salad (and something else I am forgetting).
