The Joey Dog, Bratwurst, Italian Pasta Salad, and Potato Salad
    Andrew M.

This place hits that nice sweet spot between nostalgic charm and great, simple food. Joey's feels like a time capsule, classic black-and-white floors, friendly counter service, and an unmistakable New York hot dog joint vibe, right down to the snappy sausages. I ordered two Joey Dogs and a Bratwurst, all "all the way" which is mustard, onion, and their homemade chili. That snap when you bite into them? Very nice. They use dogs made for them by Usinger's. I also had the redskin potato salad (loaded with dill, just how I like it) and a scoop of Italian pasta salad, both solid sides but the potato salad was my favorite. Prices are reasonable, portions are fair, and the whole experience just feels honest and no-frills. Staff was warm and welcoming. Worth noting: they've got Christian-themed decor and worship music playing. I'm not religious, but it didn't feel pushy--just part of the vibe. If you are Christian, you'll probably find that aspect especially appealing. All in all, this is a great little local gem. I'd absolutely come back.

The only way. ALL THE WAY!!!

You will NOT find better! Growing up going to various hot dog joints with my father, from NY to CA and even in Mexico. This will ALWAYS be my favorite. Joey has carried on his family's tradition of the way you SHOULD eat a hot dog. He's even nice enough to allow you to ruin it with ketchup. (His brother at the former Tony's in Hampton Roads wasn't as nice about it. LOL) IYKYK!! Every trip to Richmond we make our way to Joey's. Even bought a jar of the "Secret Family Chili" to bring home to Virginia Beach last time we were there. If I could give 10 STARS I would!

What's left of 2 great hot dogs lol

What a great place! Super friendly staff! I was in the mood for a really good hot dog from my childhood days and this place didn't disappoint! The vibe was retro and it was clean and cool and just inviting! Wow! What it good! I'll definitely be back! Needless to say, by the time I remembered to take a pic of my two hot dogs this is all I had left. Lol

Joey's was highly recommended by my brother, so I went here for a nice quick lunch. The Food: I had to order the classic Joey Dog here. I ordered two "All the Way" and the other two "Mess 'Em Up". The hot dogs were delicious! They had a very nice snap to each dog and all the condiments/toppings paired very well with each other. The Service: Service was very good! The owner, Joey himself, was working the hotdogs and the food came up real fast. All of the staff here are incredibly nice and welcoming as well. The Atmosphere: Upon walking in, you immediately get hit with a nostalgic/old timey feeling. The decor and setup of the place just feels nice and welcoming, with history behind it. There's plenty of tables to sit at, and there's a bar area for you to sit at too. The restaurant is very clean as well! Overall, a 5/5! Absolutely recommend Joey's Hot Dogs! From the food to the old-school/throwback feel, it was amazing.

Joey's Hot Dogs is a local favorite Hot Dog restaurant. During this place is always busy but there's never a wait of more than a couple minutes. The service at Joeys is always friendly and they always thank their customers. They are the example of what customer service should be anytime you visit a restaurant. The restaurant is always clean and they work hard and fast to clean up after people in the dining area. They do have interior and a few sidewalk tables with umbrellas outside for outdoor dining pleasure. They do have sides that they offer as well like Potato Salad, Italian Pasta, macaroni Salad, Coleslaw and a selection of chips. They have fountain drinks or you can get canned sodas. They even have a selection of bottled sodas. For sweets they have Brownies, cookies and an ice cream float. They even have popcorn to eat or take with you. The dogs they serve are the regular Joey Dog, all beef dog, turkey Frank and a veggie dog. They all have pork brats and pork veal brats and a New York Hot sausage. If you're in town visiting try the local spot that we all love, Joey's Hot Dogs!

    Yummy choices.

Ask the Community - Joey's Hot Dogs

Recently I've noticed that a lot of local restaurants have gone out of business during the pandemic. Are you still open as of 8/24/21?

Yes, we are open and nevr shut down during COVID. We have implemented instense cleaning and sanitizing procedures and have adjusted our hours due to staffing issues, now open 10:00 am to 4:00 pm instead of 10:00am to 7:00 pm. Thanks for asking

Simply put- If someone asked me to describe how I felt about this place in two words i would probably reply "not impressed." The first time I came here I ordered from the Nathan's side. The hotdog was ok, a little salty, but I knew what I was in for before I ordered it. I also had a side of cheese fries and the order handed to me was honestly just sad. My lukewarm serving of fries was quite small and the amount of cheese on them was lacking even more. If you're going to charge extra for cheese then it's expected that there will be enough to make a customer feel that they actually got what they paid for. Instead I felt like I had just donated money to an unworthy cause. On my second visit I opted to stay clear of the Nathan's side and went for an order of pretzel bites from the Auntie Anne's side. As soon as I walked up I was greeted by a young girl that seemed to hate her job. No problem, I didn't come for her I came for the pretzels. It's not table service so I knew I wouldn't have to deal with her long and I was unbothered. There were a ton of pretzels in the warmer so she was able to give me my order right away. (nice!) I walked away happy however as soon as I picked the first one out of the bag i knew I had to go back. It was as hard as a rock and could barely be squished with my fingers. I have worked in the service industry so I was hesitant about bringing them back, but at the same time what in the world was I going to do with a bag of rock pretzels? Before I could even finish telling the girl why I was back she cuts me off by saying " you're going to have to wait a while if you want me to make new ones." So I just look at her and say that was fine but in my head I'm thinking "girl you knew they were hard before I told you and you still sold them? " Careless. The new order came up, I took them and left. Somehow she still managed to make this order hard, not nearly as hard as the first but still not how they would be at any other Auntie Anne's or pretzel store. I would have been better off buying bagged snacks right out of the aisle. The idea of snacking while shopping is great and I'm definitely a fan, but this place hasn't quite mastered their craft yet. Do yourself a favor and hold on to your money.

Excited is an understatement as I thought about the delicious cheese fries I haven't had since I've relocated from NY. One con off the bat is that they don't have red onions! Now, if you've never been to Nathan's or had a NY hot dog, you won't know why that's a big deal but because I had the expectation, it was a huge disappointment that their condiment bar only had dry yellow onions and no red onions. Not sure how they're made but it's like sautéed onions stewed with tomato or something that make the onions I'm talking about. Ok.. so next the cheese fries were pretty good. About as good as I expected. Moving on ... this place shares space and management with auntie Anne's pretzels. I did get some pretzels from there but I don't want to really add that experience in this review because it's separate even-though they're together. This location is in Walmart so that's also important for someone to know if you're looking for it because there's no sign outside. I will say that the staff is not what I'm used to at a Nathan's. The cashier lady was pretty rude. I wanted my fries so I overlooked that. So if customer service is high on your list- you may want to skip coming here.
