Don't let the wine bar approach prevent you from tasting some of the best wines in Napa Valley. The tasting room was recommended by a co-worker who also helped arrange a VIP tasting. Glad she did as I doubt we would have stopped here otherwise. Our tasting appointment was at 5pm on a Wednesday so we had plenty of 1-on-1 time with Ashlei our hostess before additional customers started to show. Unfortunately, we had such a good time savoring the wines and talking with Ashlei that we forgot to take notes on the different wines. Fortunately, we will be receiving numerous wines for future "tastings" at home. We did get a chance to sample their 2006 Reserve. Yummmmm........but a little out of our price range. :-) read more

My wife and I stopped by early Sunday afternoon strolling through town without knowing much about the winery. It turned out to be one of the more enjoyable tastings. We were the only ones inside and had a great time with Ted. He was friendly, informative and easy to talk to. The wines were all amazing from the sparkling to the cabs. John Anthony Tasting Room is always a must-stop for us in Napa. This time however we took the vineyard tour with John Anthony Truchard and had a wonderful afternoon. We visited a couple of his vineyards and even made a stop at his parent's Truchard Vineyards winery... Great views and even better wines. JA Church Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc may be the best in Napa... The tasting salon is open late, too. read more

Last weekend I spend sometime with my husband members in Napa. JAV is great and really nice place. Place where you can taste wine; enjoy your time with your friends and family. There tasting menu has a lot of variety of vine to state and compare. Food menu also has a rich selection, and well pared with the wine choice. The stuff is great and friendly. Our server was very attended courteous, also he was well informed about there wine. it was a sunday night when my girlfriend and I went after dinner here at morimotos. it was great, we got a bottle of wine and a great conversation with some puerto rican server. there was a private party that had hooked up their ipod to the entire restaurants sound system. i didn't mind at all because they're music was good and they're laughter filled the bar and i knew they were hitting it hard. our server was great, he had to constantly remind me he was from puerto rico but lived in brooklyn but moved to napa to change it up for himself. brooklyn this, puerto rico that, salsa this, salsa that, i liked the guy and he was entertaining. good times, i suggest to come here for great service, great wine, and great cheese. and the occasional offer to smoke marijuana with other patrons. awkward.... read more

This place was recommended by friends and I was really looking forward to it but my friend and I who went ended up very disappointed. I think it was because of the menu. You can either get a flight or a glass. Well, my definition of a flight and John Anthony's definition of a flight are clearly not the same. When I order a flight, I expect a 2oz pour in each glass and I get all 3 glasses at the same time. But not here. Your flight is actually just a taste. I barely got a sip! So I paid $20 to taste about 2oz total of a glass of wine, if even that. If I was expecting that then that would be one thing but I was expecting an actual flight of wine. So, totally misleading and thanks to that I will never be back. There are other places in Napa that are honest about what you are purchasing and I'd much rather go there. I'll give them one star for a fantastic atmosphere but that's about it. I'm so happy that later in the evening we headed to 1313 Main where we were able to enjoy an ACTUAL flight of wine that was more than just a taste. Please, change your menu so people know what they are really purchasing. That is not a flight. It's a taste!!! read more

My husband and I came here for a nice glass of wine before staring our wine tasting with my group of friends for the day. We were waiting for everyone to arrive in Napa and John Anthony came up as a winery close to where we were and it had great reviews. When we arrived it was noon, so there wasn't too many people there. However, the hostess was very nice and offered up any seat in the place. We decided to sit at the bar and she immediately provided us with a menu. I like this place a lot. It is decorated really nice - very trendy and modern. The paintings are abstract and they have this great painting of their logo over the bar. They also this really nice couch that looked to be made of cow hide that was just so fabulous. I love places that have great interior décor and John Anthony is one of those places. I ended up trying one of their Sauvignon Blanc's (Church Vineyard) and it was delicious. The hostess was very nice and chatted us up about what we were doing in Napa, where we from, etc. We told her that we would be going to dinner and she even let us look up the menu of the restaurant on her laptop. I thought that was really nice and I just like when a hostess is helpful regardless of if you're eating at her restaurant or another. I wish we could have stayed longer and tried more wines, but we had to meet our group. But I feel like I will definitely want to come back to this place. read more

I'll start this review by saying I'm a huge wine fan and go wine tasting on a regular basis. I don't write many yelp reviews but felt the need to after my experience at John Anthony today. Definitely one of the worst tasting experiences I've ever had. $25 for three minuscule pours, and $16 for what would be a half glass at any restaurant. I feel like they would have used a chemistry pipette to fill the glasses if they could have. No personalization in the experience. Skip this place and go to Jam next door. We caught it on a slow night and was very quiet but super enjoyable! Wines=great! Atmosphere=great! Try the cheese plate, it has some of the best local cheeses around. Pros: -This was a really pleasant surprise. After spending our days going to actual vineyards and doing tastings with incredible scenic views over the vineyards, we were skeptical of how good this place was. But, it was right next to our hotel and the reviews couldn't be denied, so we popped in, and so happy we did! -The wine was quite good - specialized in red wine - and they offered two tasting options so we did one of each, and it was reasonably priced (could also do glasses of wine, and they had snacks like olives or cheese you could order) -The ambience was rather nice given it's a small bar-like place. We sat at the bar so we could engage with the sommelier. -Liked that it was open later (late afternoons/evenings) so that you could still go here after being out and about at other wineries that close at 4pm or 5pm. -Our sommelier, Brent I believe was his name, was great. Really personable and an actual Napa native, born and raised. He was knowledgable about the wines but he was also interesting to talk with about broader Napa topics. He helped make this a great choice! Cons: -None that I can think of. read more

Interior design of the tasting room is chic and modern and the wines were good. However, the service was blah as our host spent less than 10 seconds introducing the wine at each pour and disappeared into another room. And don't bother signing up for The List as their customer service is crap as well. I was told my shipment would be overnight after the first attempt shipment failed to arrive on time. Received no tracking number for the overnight delivery so I decided to email them the following day. Turned out the shipment was never made and no one even attempted to contact me. The allocation person whom I spoke with acted as if I was an inconvenience for their own oversight and offered no apology. It is a shame that such good wine is paired with such horrible, irresponsible services. They do not care about having you as a customer so take your money elsewhere. Not worth the money and hassle. read more
