If there was a 0 star option that is what we would give Dr. Bomosky. He is awful rude and does not have any people skills. Cannot keep eye contact and treats you as a $$ number for sure. Too bad patients who have medical cannot opt out of seeing him, since there are not too many options in the governmental health network for cornea doctors. We dealt with his rudeness and lack of patience for a year in hope he would really be at least good at his specialty but it turned out that after a year, I had the guts to tell him we had been seen him for a year and had not seen any improvements. It was then when he explored and showed even more about his unprofessional practice, he didn't want to hear it and walked out of the room. He does not tell you what to do or not to do, barely speaks, looks through your chart as if he was reading them but he does not, every time we went he asked the same questions, he never pays attention to your concerns and when he answers gives you vague answers, and when he gives you prescriptions sometimes you have to play phone tag with his office to get them filled, one time it took us two months to get some drops because the office had assumed we wouldn't fill them because it wasn't covered by insurance. Who are they to decide? His offices are so busy and no matter the time of your appointment the wait time usually ranges between 1 to 3 hours. Stay away from him if you can, you are better off without him, and not to mention he made us feel discriminated against. My mother doesn't speak English and I always translate for her, I'm her daughter and he didn't care to really give us the time of the day in any appointment. You wait 2 hours for a 5 minute appointment. No fair. There are other doctors in this office who are nicer and better but they have different specialties. Unfortunately, if it wasn't for Medical patients he would probably be out of business because that's probably his only way to keep his practice going, people who don't have a choice and have to remain there, with no other option. Best Opthamologist in San Diego!! I was referred to the standard "go to" opthamologist for Sharp Community Medical Group and was extremely underwhelmed. In 6 months of treatment for a recurrent corneal abrasion, the doctor spent less than a total of 5 minutes with me and was dismissive each time. Dr. Bokosky and his staff are utterly professional and attentive and spend as much time with me as needed. They are treating the problem and not the symptoms. This place is the worst! Staff is rude and uncaring and so is the dr. If you get referred to this Dr. request a change immediately! They have no respect for your time or your personal information, if they can find it! They are too busy shuffling people back and forth between the rooms and the lobby to even bother with your existence. They piece meal their care so that the dr can spend one minute per patient and maximize his time and profits, but waste hours of their patients time. They have conversations with patients, not in private rooms, but out in the halls where everyone can hear and know what is going on with you because they kick you out of the private room before they have completed to care for you to make another patient think they will be taken care of. Even patients that have difficulties walking get shuffled back and forth, back and forth. It is disgusting how they have no consideration whatsoever for their patients. The Dr. Ended up saying the "he will do" the surgery, "it is risky" but he'll do it. Then doesn't really explain the risks? Or what would happen if I don't elect the surgery? Was referred to this doctor through my insurance but had I paid more attention to his yelp reviews I would never have gone to see him. The first visit I had was not pleasant but then I thought maybe he was too overwhelmed with patients and was having a bad day but the second visit I realized that was just his manner. He is brusk, rude, actually misinformed me, and actually had the nerve to tell me that if I didn't give him a five star rating that San Diego patients would be less fortunate for it. Wait time was horrible and every patient in his very overcrowded office seemed to think this was acceptable. His staff seemed to reflect his manner and the brightest, warmest, most professional person was his patient concierge. I'm surprised that my HMO uses him for referrals. read more

RUN FAR AWAY! DO NOT GO TO THIS "DOCTOR" if you can avoid it! DR. was ANGRY, HOSTILE AND AGRESSIVE! I waited for a month to get an appointment then I waited an hour and a half to be seen by Dr. Bokosky only to be horrified by the experience. Please note that I got a Yelp account just so I can warn other people about him. He came into the room where I was to be seen already stressed out, angry, hostile and aggressive, didn't ask me to confirm my name or DOB or ANYTHING, would NOT let me tell him anything about my eye or ask him any questions, was EXTREMELY rude and dismissive, kept saying he is the cornea specialist so he knows best. I tried to be polite and patient but he was just really mean and when I finally questioned his hostility towards me he said "maybe we are not the office for you, and maybe I'm not the doctor for you", I started to tear up purely from shock and frustration and instead of worrying about the fact that his patient is crying he got annoyed and said "what you are doing right now with the tissue, I wouldn't do that, we just put eye drops in your eyes" as if to say stop crying its annoying. When I told him that he is acting in a completely unacceptable way he said he feels attacked by me and walked out on me, literally just walked out without solving any of my eye issues. For some reason the office manager came in, EVEN THOUGH I DID NOT CALL FOR HER, after listening to me and dismissing everything I said she told me "I see why the doctor left, look at yourself". I can see now why the he sent in the office manager, if this is the way he treats his patients I'm sure complaints to the office manager is a routine daily occurrence. I honestly didn't feel safe in his presence and at one point I even made sure the door was open in the room we were in to make sure I can run out if he got really out of control. I would NOT trust someone like this with my eye or eyesight, he is mentally and emotionally unstable and should not practice medicine. I would like to add a 'zero stars' choice to this rating! I took my dad to Dr. Bokowski a few times on the recommendation of another Dr. He treated my dad like he was stupid and refused to talk to him. My dad is hard of hearing and just needs to have someone talk a little louder but Dr. Bokowski refused to talk to him and yelled at me to tell him what he'd said. He was so disrespectful to both of us! My father tried to ask him a question and he told me that he was NOT going to talk to him. Anytime I tried to ask a question he answered with a sarcastic, defensive, snotty and disrespectful answer, if you could even call it an answer. He wouldn't answer anything and kept saying, "HOW SHOULD I KNOW! I CAN"T TELL THE FUTURE!" I Initially, when we asked him if he thought my dad was ready to get a new eye prescription to get new glasses he claimed that I was "pissed" (Yes, he said "pissed" three times, actually!) I was floored by his unprofessional demeanor and his threatening manner. I decided that his behavior was so odd and becoming so threatening as he was yelling and stomping his feet, that I got up and left with my dad. It was the most bizarre thing I've ever experienced with a doctor and felt that it was a very bad situation that we needed to get out of quickly. Before things had gotten so threatening he gave me some ointment for my dad's eye to be applied with a Q-tip and told me not to use the same end of the Q-Tip for each eye so the infection wouldn't spread. Then he repeatedly used the same end of the Q-Tip in each eye!! When I asked him about this, he screamed at me! No one should put themselves or their loved ones in this situation with Dr. Bokowski! PS..I would also like to point out that when I first looked at his other reviews, there were more negative reviews on here about him. One of them even talked about how he called this woman at home and swore at her on the phone! These reviews seem to be disappearing. I visited Dr. John Bokosky for the first and last time today. He was rushed, never smiled, brusque when he put drops in my eyes to dilate my pupils and did minimum of eye contact even upon entering the examination room. None of this is good service in my estimation, but I certainly would not think too much about it and much less, take my time to write a review. What had me leaving in tears was for him to dismiss my eye pain and ask why I'd visited him after seeing my own doctor, "He and I read the same books and go to the same conferences." He said my pterygium was not serious enough for surgery, even though I was reporting severe eye burning and irritation after midday everyday. read more

I wish you could only put a zero as that is all Dr Bokosky deserves. He is very rude, your appointment is always a minimum of 45 minutes behind. He is always trying to upsell you something. His bedside manner leaves a lot to be desired, and he has an ego that will not stop. Things he told me on one visit and my husband heard also he denied and then called a staff member in to back him up saying "that is not something I would say is it?" What is the staff member suppose to say, he signs her paychecks. My husband and I both called him on it and looked at us like we were stupid, he talks to you like you are stupid. Well....it is not surprising to see the horrible reviews this Doctor has - he has earned them. I use the word "Doctor" loosely here. As recently as one month ago, my sister is one of many of his patients that he berrated, insulted, and humiliated. She has had a surgery by this man at least two times and each and every appointment he subjects her to insults. She is on state assistance as she is disabled. Bokosky shouted at her (in the waiting room) that she was the reason why he pays such high taxes, that he shouldn't have to treat "'people like her'" and that she was worthless. He then complained that she was lazy and that he worked hard so that "you people" can have medical care. I suppose some of this behaviour may be tolerable if his skills as a surgeon were outstanding. In my opinion he is not an outstanding surgeon. She's had to have the same surgery on her eye (performed by this man) at least three times and she now has to have it again. She will not be going back to this biggoted man who has no business being in the medical field and treating his patients this way. He clearly has some issues in dealing with people who are from different backgrounds than his and as another reviewer suggests he also has issues with elderly folks. 3 doctors in NYC all said that they could not fix my vision. I was legally blind without contacts and glasses. Dr Bokosky got my vision to 20/20 for distance and I can also read the tiniest print! I'm so grateful to him! It was worth the trip cross country. It's been 2 years and my eyes are still perfect. My mom lives in San Diego and because of her history of surgeries for vision 15 years ago, no doctors felt "confident of a good outcome" for her cataract surgery. Dr Bokosky felt confident and her cataract surgery went great! She's seeing better than ever without glasses and she also can read without glasses and she's over 70! This year my dad needed his cataracts fixed. He had broken his neck many years ago so his neck is stiff. Dr Bokosky worked very hard to make my dad comfortable for his surgery and dad's eyes also came out great! Dr Bokosky's office is full but they really do a great job of shuffling people around. I'd rather be in a full office with a great doctor than in a more empty one with an average doctor. Dr Bokosky has spoken to us directly about potential issues with each of our cases but always professionally and caring. I had to be seen on a Saturday because of the way my flights from NYC were arranged and he was very kind about it. I've met lots of people in the waiting room who were there because another doctor screwed up and sent them to Dr Bokosky to fix it. Cut them some slack - he and his staff work hard to give the best possible outcome to as many people as possible. I'm grateful that I was included. Thus, I'm fine with a full waiting room. I would've hated to have been turned away. Also, 3 of my parents' doctors sent their parents to Dr B and one doctor went there himself. When another doctor says he's the best, you know you're going to get quality! Thank you Dr Bokosky. My family is grateful to you for all you did for us! This doctor was rather rude.. as other have said his hillcrest office is awkward and HORRIBLY disorganized.. his staff was kind but it seemed difficult for them to move around one another let alone shuffle patients from room to room in the mix. The doctor himself is rude and condescending.. when I mentioned it to him his response was "I'm just straight forward." However straight forward is not synonymous with rude.. a person can be straight forward and still be tactful. When I saw him for my cornea swelling on one eye he said it wasn't severe enough to need surgery yet (fine by me) but he wanted to do a third transplant on my left eye. After explaining what had happened with that one and that I was hesitant he very rudely implied that when I lost sight in my right eye it would be nice to have my left one to fall back on. I asked him who he would recommend I go to to get a second opinion from (so I would know who I'm not contacting) and he got very defensive and gave me a name. Ultimately he advised I go see his glaucoma specialist partner which I did and it was a terrible decision as well but that's for a different review. All said and done. I will not be returning here. I'd rather be blind than treated so disrespectfully. But I'm sure it won't come to that there have to be doctors out there who care about their patients. Oh I also mentioned to him the parking in SD (in a general sense) was awful and would prefer to see him in escondido and he got upset and proceeded to tell me how much he had spent on the parking lot by his office (which was full at 9 am). Dr. Bokosky has a very busy practice. He is one of the BEST in town but you will have to wait to see him. Best to see him at the La Jolla/UTC location rather than Hillcrest. He did a good job with my cataract surgery. But for basic eye exams you are working with one of his assistant's and you are better going somewhere else. read more

I had to see Dr. Bokosky for some serious issues related to my cornea. He is candid, straight to the point and very knowledgeable. I found out later that after my first visit to diagnose my issue, he sat down with his nurse to discuss various treatment options, and was thinking about my medical problem long after I had left the appointment. Don't misunderstand his abrupt behavior, he just needs to get on to his next patient. I am so thankful that he didn't take time to exchange pleasantries with the patient prior to me, while I was sitting in the examination room in excruciating pain. He is one of only a few corneal specialists in San Diego and by far the most knowledgeable. We would highly recommend Dr. Bokosky to anyone. All I can say is Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!!! Dr. Bokosky did a procedure call Cross Linking on my son. This was done to stop the progression of keratococnus. We do not live in California, and had to travel quite a ways, but Donna was wonderful helping us plan the logistic of the whole thing. I have to update my April review of Dr. Bokosky. I have been seeing him for almost 3 years now and I think he has improved on his bedside manner. The office facilities have improved. They have re done their parking lot so that parking is some easier, but it is still below par. They really need a new building with much better parking. I am handicapped and finding a suitable parking space can still be difficult. Dr. Bokosky and his staff are aware of the problems with parking and are tying to improve it. I have to say the staff has been wonderful to me, they are very caring. On my last visit I was told they have installed a new place for people in wheel chairs. You don't even have to get out of your chair, they can wheel you into place and bring the equipment, not sure what it is called, but the device you look through to have your vision tested. They have a new very expensive phone system that leaves a lot to be desired, but they are sensitive to the needs of their patients and are trying to make things easier for them. I have seen that Dr. Bokosky is one of the best eye surgeons in town. My family doctor has not met him, but knows of his expertise. Once he has finished with my eye exam, he always asks several times if I have any questions. Since my last evaluation, I have been able to upgrade my remarks and give him 4 stars instead of only 2. read more

It saddens me to see the low reviews here for Dr. Bokosky. As a person who's personally coped with diseases of the eye for the last 43 years, I consider Dr. B. a blessing. Is his waiting room full? Yes! If you want the best, he's worth the wait. Emergencies come up in ophthalmology; and having had a few of those emergency surgeries myself, I'm happy doctors like Bokosky will take the time necessary to manage the issue. Please take care of the emergency patients... I'm happy to wait, I brought a book. Dr. B just performed my third cataract surgery and a pupiloplasty. It was my third surgery because another doctor who's name will go unmentioned 'jacked up' the first procedure leaving me with a 'blown out' pupil. Dr. B. fixed the lens and the pupil and I can see clearly in that eye for the first time in 20 years. Thank goodness he's confident in his ability. Regarding his bedside manner: I've never woken up with him holding my hand and no, he's never 'sugarcoated' anything. He treats me like an adult who's invested in the health of my eyesight. I was referred to see Dr. John Bokosky after many years of intense redness, swelling and significant pain in my eye. He immediately diagnosed me and started a strong regime of treatment. Within days my eye was better, and within a month, my eye was looking normal again. However, because of the years of undiagnosed inflammation by other doctors, my cornea is scarred and I have some vision loss. I have been going to Dr. Boskosky's office for over 25 years, initially for eye exams and glasses. The time finally came for cataract surgery. I had both eyes done within a two-month period and am exceedingly pleased with the terrific outcome -- no more glasses after 50 years. Yes, their offices are busy (I've been to Hillcrest and La Jolla). Yes, the wait is often long. I plan for a long wait and bring a book and relax. Having the BEST is worth the inconvenience of extra time or a crowded waiting room. this was my worst experience with any doctors assistant - I supposed to have a surgery and they told me they will call me "tomorrow" to confirm the surgery day. I have not heard from them. I had to call them 3 times to find out when is my surgery and no one knew what is going on "we will call you back today" never called back. Dr. prescribe me eye drops and they supposed to send prescriptions to my pharmacy - this also was never done. For 3 days I went to the pharmacy to pick up my drops - they've never sent it there. I gave up and going to another doctor. His staff has NO IDEA what is going on. We saw Dr. Bokosky 4 times and each time he was extremely rude to us and wouldn't answer our questions in any normal kind of doctor/patient exchange. BEWARE! I agree with all the bad reviews about Dr. Bokosky and his staff. This office is so disorganized. Wait times are terrible. The Pharmacy called Dr. Bokosky's office and I also call the office to get a prescription refilled, well, three weeks went by and I had to physically go to the office and demanded a written prescription. The staff said it would be easier for them to call it in and I said I've already been waiting three weeks and no one from this office has called it in therefore I demand a written prescription which I had to wait one and a half hours for. We had an appointment with Dr. Bokosky and had to wait 2 hours before being seen and I explained all the problems that I was having and he said but you had to have your eyes refracted and I said no I did not, I never get my eyes refracted by you and then Dr. Bokosky said your right this is an easy appointment and then called his office manager Christina in to ask why we had to wait so long and she couldn't answer. Dr. Bokosky made all kinds of excuses and when it came down to it he was an out right bastard! Dr. Bokosky has no compassion or professionalism for his patients and yes he is very RUDE!!!. Dr. Bokosky does rush you and you do get moved from room to room. Years ago this was not the case. I don't know what has happened to Dr. Bokosky and the running of his office. I might not be rich like Dr. Bokosky but that does not give him any right to treat you like you don't matter because of that fact. If I could, I wouldn't give this office, or 'doctor' any stars! I took my 83 year old Mother here for the first and LAST TIME today. DO NOT use this office, or this 'DOCTOR' - we were there for 3 1/2 hours! We were moved in and out of the waiting room and multiple rooms, as they shuffled patients back and forth - at one point a 'doctor' walked in and shouted at us to 'Get out! I need this room now!" We saw Dr. Bokosky for a total of 5 minutes, over the 3 1/2 hours we were in the office waiting and to top it off - the two procedures performed by techs were completely inadequate. At one point, the tech leaned over to another tech and said "I don't do this that often, what do you think?"...her response "Oh, it's fine" and proceeded to kick my Mom's chair to make room for another patient! After all of the waiting, and two horrible procedures - he walked over and said "You need a retina specialist." and walked away! The only thing this office is good at, is milking Medicare and Tri-care patients. DON'T waster your time with this office, or this 'doctor'. read more

I am really taken back by the reviews I am reading. I had surgery with Bokosky twice several years apart. He is excellent. I worked for Kaiser when everyone was doing the lasik surgery and some of the stories were frightening. So I realized many of our own docs were having the surgery with great results so I research and discovered they were going to Dr. Bokosky and that where I went and was extremely happy with the results. I knew immediately he was so meticulous and that what I wanted. So many some people don't like meticulous and professional with no time for tardiness and etc. read more

Dr. Bokosky performed cataract surgery on both of my eyes and, based on my condition, recommended Bausch & Lomb CrystaLens multi-focus implants. My previousl Opthamologist wasn't willing to recommend anything other than single-focus implants which would have required me to wear reading glasses after the surgery. My eyesight after the surgery is now exceptional and I don't have to wear glasses. Based on my positive experience with Dr. Bokosky, I can't say enough good things about his experience and knowledge. He does run a very fully practice at all of his locations but in my opinion, if I have a choice between waiting a little for a doctor that is one of the best in his field vs. someone of a lesser caliber with less patients in the waiting room, I'll go for the best and wait a little longer. read more

It is sad to even give my experience here 1 star. While I am sure they are competent professionals, I had no chance to find out in person. I had an appointment a 8:45 a.m. and arrived 5 minutes early. At 9 after my name had not been called, they informed me that I could wait "at least" another hour if I wanted to see a doctor. When I showed them my appiontment card, she just shrugged her shoulders. She asked if I wanted to reschedule another appointment, but to just go through the same thing again? So, I had him do my surgery a few days ago. Both he and his entire staff were very professional, efficient and courteous. My results so far - great! I cannot even begin to express my family's level of frustration and disgust towards Dr. Bokosky and the other staff we've been dealing with at Eye Care of San Diego recently. We have been trying to receive an eye surgery for one of our family members who is developmentally disabled, and who experiences a great level of anxiety every time that she needs to go to the doctor for a normal visit, let alone get ready for a procedure like this. And after days of her being in tears as we tried to prepare in the lead up to this surgery, we arrived and sat in the office for 2 hours yesterday before being informed that our surgery was cancelled, and would need to be rescheduled for later this week. After we asked if it could be done the next day, as she would not be able to cope with the high level of anxiety if we had to wait any longer, we tried to continue our preparation for the procedure. Then we arrived at the office again today only to wait 2 more hours before being informed that our surgery was cancelled FOR A SECOND TIME. I'm not sure if this abominable treatment is due to the fact that our family member does not have great insurance, but whatever the case, this level of utter disregard that this doctor and his office staff appear to have towards a person with special needs and the family that is trying to receive the best care possible for her is completely despicable. They should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. read more

With 3 visits 2 weeks apart, Dr Bokosky cleared the infection. All 3 appointments were between 7-8AM. For each visit we were in and out within an hour. He is the only opthalmologist who could repair a cornea problem that I had from a contact lens. Several other doctors referred me to him. Yes, his waiting room is too crowded and overbooked, but his services are obviously in high demand. If you are just looking for a mother go elsewhere. If you want the best medical see him. read more

Dr. Bokosky is a great doctor. I was a great candidate for LASIK, almost legally blind, and he corrected my vision to 20/20. I could not be happier with his performance. Some of these complaints are about his service or personality. I wasn't there to date the Dr., I was there for the best person to perform the surgery. He was efficient and friendly enough. Most people only read the 1 stars but I hope people read this review because I normally only post exceptionally good or bad service and he definitely fulfilled the requirements for exceptionally good. Also I am only in my 20s whereas most people complaining are well into their geriatric years and typically complain more to begin with. Dr. B is the best way to go. read more

I was referred to Dr. Bokosky by my primary care physician for an emergency eye problem. I called and they were able to get me in the same day. When I saw the reviews, I was hesitant to keep my appointment but I took the chance. I arrived for my appointment and gave my name at the front desk, the gal said "oh yes, I spoke with you this morning". I had new patient paperwork to fill out and no sooner than I took a seat, a very pleasant young lady introduced herself as Keyana, the patient concierge. She explained the office set up, assured me that I would be taken care of regardless of what I needed but also that the wait might be longer as they take the time needed with every patient. Adara, a medical technician came and got me for some initial testing. She was very nice explaining the tests and very thorough when doing them. I eventually saw Dr. Vasile. She took her time and I felt very comfortable in her hands and with her diagnosis. I don't know about Dr. Bokosky, but I would highly recommend Dr. Vasile and the staff at Eyecare of San Diego. read more

I have been sent to this doctor as a new diabetic and loosing sight in my eye. First time I am sent to this office I give the office staff my primary eye doctors concerns and findings. They never put it in my file and send me to one of their normal eye doctor who basically tells me I don't know what I am talking about and ignores my concern. Also she makes a point to tell me she is doing a test and she is not getting paid for it so I am inconveniencing her. I leave the office just upset and discouraged. I am sent back to this office see Dr Bokosky first my records are sent again and again they refused to out it in my file. Then he tells me I have Cataracts and need surgery but since I don't trust his staff asked him to send his findings to my primary doctor. Three weeks later nothing. Try to call the office to get help no one will pick up the phone or call you back. Worst office ever rude and don't care about people. read more

I went to Dr. Bokosky a few months ago for a chalzion removal. I waited 2 1/2 hours in his waiting room. I am also in the healthcare field and tried to be understanding for maybe a particularly crazy, busy day. After the initial introduction and explaining to him what I was there for (I had seen one of their other doctors a week before so it should not have been a surprise), he 'agreed' to do the procedure (?). He then gave me an injection of lidocaine to numb my eyelid for the procedure and stepped out. Ten minutes later an assistant(?) (she didn't tell me who she was) came in to 'confess' that Dr. Bokosky had a meeting that 'he forgot about' and he 'had to attend'. What?! I told her he just injected my eyelid (which was one of the most painful things I've ever experienced btw. She said 'that's ok, he can inject it again'. He came back 25 minutes later and had to inject it AGAIN, then RUSHED through the procedure, leaving a gash on my eyelid, no instructions for aftercare. (Found out later I should have been given antibiotic drops). The whole time I was there multiple people entered the room to wash their hands because they didn't have enough sinks in the office, and during the procedure a shadower watched (no introduction to me ... I have no idea who he was and it was never explained). I dealt with the wound on my eyelid for weeks, and the chalazion was not fully removed. I went to another ophthalmologist a month later. Completely different experience. He looked under my eyelid and informed me Bokowsky had made the incision the WRONG way. Again, I tried to be understanding during the 3 1/2 hours I was at Bokosky's office but will never step foot there again, and will be telling my PCP to take him off her referral list. I have been seeing Dr. Bokosky forever and feel well-cared for. I have had corneal transplants, corneal adjustments and other procedures by him and feel confident in his expertise. I am disturbed by the bad reviews. As the years go by he has gotten more abrupt but always takes the time I need for questions, etc. I intensly dislike the Hillcrest office - parking, staff, facilities so now I go to Escondido to see him and it is much better. Getting ready for another procedure, he is the only one I would want to do it - and hope it will be done in Escondido! I do resent the long waiting time in Hillcrest but this is rarely the case in Escondido. I will certainly keep him as my corneal specialist but expect fair and decent treatment which I have always had. I expect him to listen, to answer questions, to advise me about procedures and if that changes, I would reconsider. I expect to be seeing him forever - or until he retires! read more
