The lady AFTER the Optometrist was upselling the entire time. I've been here before and my insurance was recognized and the cost was covered. She essentially charged for the full amount for the exam sans a 18 dollars discount (and I have great insurance) The lady on the phone said that my insurance was confirmed, and then the lady that was trying to sell me said, "let me check your insurance." AND NEVER ONCE did she say I was not covered. I called my insurance after and they said. "They lied to you ... they are not in network. I'm sorry they mislead you." Either way folks,... Nothing screams "Bad Faith Business" than that... there has been a change in this place. It's not the same,... This office conducted a study and provided me abnormal results. I asked to speak to the doctor just for a few minutes so that I could understand what the results meant and they refuse to talk to me saying that they don't have a copy of the results which is BS because legally you have to keep copies of everything that you do as a doctor. The funny thing is if I need to follow up information or follow up exam made me a client but instead refused to help me and said the doctor was busy. He was with another patient and he couldn't talk to me not he couldn't talk to me until later, but he could not talk to me. read more

I made an appointment to see Dr. Trajano only to find out that she no longer works at Total Vision Bonita. When I asked the front desk to find out why I was "misled" when my appointment was scheduled, they said they were sorry. No idea where she had gone. Gone downhill since Dr. Mason retired! I'm in shock as staff ordered me the completely WRONG old prescription after I just came in for an appointment- called in and the rude staff did not even bother to apologize for such an egregious mistake- I just paid $500 for this incorrect product! The woman on the phone was rude and not kind- the customer service is mediocre. Additionally no one asked me about my insurance on the phone or at the appointment- at all! Not to mention that my time at the office was such a mess! They left me sitting there with a VR machine on my face just to tell me it was dead! The staff offered my price matches and free stuff and said I always should have gotten it- no one had ever offered me any deal or price matches before. I'm so disappointed- I've been coming here since 2009 at least. After this, I will never return. So unprofessional, so rude, and the staff is incompetent. read more

Dr Kikunaga is my new Optometrist. I have VSP eye insurance which is accepted at Bonita Point Family Optometry (Now part of Total Vision). They have a huge selection of eyewear. I was very pleased with the variety which included high end designer frames . The representative that assisted me with my VSP plan provided excellent customer service. Dr. Kikunaga is FANTASTIC. However they recently went off network for VSP and did not contact me before my appointment. They DID send me a reminder to MAKE my appointment though - wish they had told me then. Fortunately I caught the changes while signing in, but now I lost time assuming I could still be seen there and now have to find a new doctor in-network. I've been a patient of Dr. Kikunaga for many years now. I called at 8 am and was able to be seen at 9 am the same day due to seeing floaters (black squiggly lines) for the first time. I appreciate that he was able to fit me in during his very busy schedule. It was reassuring to know that there were no issues with my retina at this time. Front desk quoted me one price on the phone and when I showed up for my appt I verified with them what I was having done they confirmed it. When I went to pay they were going to charge me 3 times what I was quoted. The doctor didn't event write my contact prescription correctly and does it a lot apparently and Costco has to call and verify all the time from what I was told. Over priced, front desk ladies aren't the friendliest, only one that was nice was the girl that helped me with my contact fitting. Not my first choice for an optometrist. read more

I have been going to this office well over 20+ years. My husband had an appointment today, and they failed to let him know that they no longer accept our insurance. What Dr. office doesn't verify that information PRIOR TO the appointment? Apparently, this changed back in September 2023. Guess what, we didn't receive an email about it either. Dr. Kikunaga is the best. Very professional and friendly. I recently had an eye exam and opted to buy glasses elsewhere to try and save some money. But my glasses would not arrive for another 10-14 days. And I couldn't see my computer screen! I called Bonita Point and asked if the doctor could let me come and just buy a couple of pairs of contact lenses to get me through. Turns out, he gave me a couple of pairs for free as a courtesy! In these uncertain times, when many of us are having to work from home, and deal with the struggles that go along with that, anything to make our daily work regimen easier is very much appreciated. And now, thanks to Bonita Point, I can see my computer and get my work done without having to squint while I wait for my glasses. read more

New patient here & will definitely be coming back. Loved that Dr. Kikunaga used hand sanitizer profusely. His hands may or may not be dry now, but my eyes are for sure in safe hands. I like his explanations (not just glazing over topics nor boring you with too much details) & how he really listens to your questions. He doesn't try to sound too smart for you but doesn't dumb it down either. It also seems like there's a good relationship between him & the ophthalmologists he refers to, so if there's more invasive procedures you need done, it doesn't feel like he's sending you off to the unknown. Though the rest of the staff was good, I wish I remembered to ask for the optician's name specifically. Our interaction wasn't long, but she was the cherry on top of my visit. She was warm, highly competent, & I didn't feel like I was being judged for my retail choices. Plus, since it's an open lobby, when I heard her on the phone with their lab, she was politely advocating for patients who have been waiting for their orders. read more

4.75- Dr. Kikunaga (Ki-koo-nay-guh) rocks fo sho! I have vision insurance, but don't often think about using it. This year I know I'm eligible for new frames, so I figured I'd get my eyes checked. I wasn't quite sure where to go for this, but I happened to see Choice Vision advertised up on yelp, so I figured why not. So this place is pretty new. I think they told me they just moved in at the end of January, and you can tell. The office was well lit, and looked very up to date (not like those dingy lens crafters or nu-visions you might see at the mall). The receptionist working was very friendly and had me fill out my forms. Once we got that out of the way, it was time to meet Dr. K! Dr. K, (Henry as friends may call him) was very kind, and did well to establish rapport with me, telling me a bit about himself, and asking about me as well. He was also very knowledgable and thorough in his explanations of what he was doing throughout the appointment. I liked how he took subject matter I have no knowledge about what so ever, and made it very easy to understand. I also liked (though found a little strange at first) how when it came to picking frames out, the receptionist sat me down, and kind of had me model glasses. Since my wife wasn't with me, it was nice to have a woman's opinion about how my new frames were going to look. And though I don't have kids, on my way out, I saw Dr. K give some kids some "goodie bags" for coming in that day. It's those little things that made me really enjoy my exp. with Dr. K and his staff. First time costumer here. The provider is very nice, never felt rushed, answered all of my questions since it was my first time getting glasses. The staff was also very nice and profesional. I was acknowledged when I entered and also when I left . The technician took the time in helping choose a frame best suited for my face. Again never felt rushed. It occurred to me during my last visit that Dr. Kikunaga has been my optometrist for over ten years now. He is wonderful and incredibly thorough. Appointments are never rushed. He really takes the time to listen and to answer any questions in a way that is clear and concise. He has always been very good about cleanliness pre-covid (you can tell it's routine - hand sanitizer, wiping down equipment with alcohol after use) and I appreciate the extra precautions taken during this time (temp check and hand sanitizer at the door). I have been going here for years and NEVER had any issues with them, but now all of the sudden they give me so many complications. They constantly gave me different prices on the same pair of glasses, they gave out false information. I went in to get my eyes checked turns out I needed new lenses, the receptionist told me there was a $99 deal on lenses and frames. I told her I also wanted to get my current glasses an updated lense for backup. She told me everything was covered next time i come in just give them my old pair,, so I paid $30 out of pocket. I come in a different receptionist told me I had to pay $99 for new lenses on my old pair. Super ridiculous the staff needs to get their information together... read more

I feel like they tried to make me pay when my insurance covered all I needed are driving glasses. That's what I was upset about they just handed me the most expensive stuff remember to ask questions. Our daughter has been wearing glasses since she was 4 and my wife and I have always struggled with finding a Dr and an office that we'd come back to every year. Dr. K was great during the testing with my daughter (now 8). She is typically very shy and doesn't talk much but Dr. K made her laugh and made her feel comfortable during the exam. After testing, Dr. K took the time to explain everything regarding my daughter's prescription and it didn't feel rushed like other places where they squeeze so many people in. Dr. K answered all my questions in a way that someone who doesn't know the lingo could understand and it really showed me that he really cares for his Patients. When it came time to for her to pick glasses, my daughter was having trouble deciding which glasses to pick. The main optician picked several frames for her to try and within minutes my daughter was able to decide the pair she wanted. Optician really built a relationship with my daughter by asking her about the things she liked to do and cats! Awesome staff overall! What kind of optometrist is worth driving 30+ min for? Let me tell you who..and let me tell you why!! I've been going to various optometrists for the past 9 years and I've never encountered an optometrist who provides a quality of service as fine as Dr. Kikunaga's. He's the type of doctor who will strive to remember your face and doesn't treat you like "just another appointment". He has a great sense of humor that'll help you forget you're at a doctor's office! He's very personable and passionate about his job. Besides Dr. Kikunaga, his staff is just as great!! I happened to be there when a little boy was choosing out his frames and he probably tried on over 30 different frames and the optician was still very patient and helpful. They always have a smile on their face and are attentive to your needs. They'll also make sure you're completely satisfied with your selection! Finally, they have a wide variety of frames for you to choose from. If you're a Gucci girl like me, your Gucci frames are sitting in their office waiting for you!! I browsed through their entire selection and picked out so many frames I wanted, from Fendi's to Coach to Juicy Couture..they have it all. There were many childrens and mens frames and sunglasses as well! I found this place because they take VSP insurance. When I first called this place to figure out the exact location, the receptionist was very courteous and friendly. When I arrived, I was greeted by her friendly smile. I felt very welcomed as soon as I walked in. When I first met Dr. Kikunaga, he was very accommodating due to my eye health at the time. He really helped me because I was getting a mild eye infection and only wore contacts at the time. He had a brilliant idea of giving me dailies until my eye healed and provided eye drops for me. He updated my glasses and contacts rx and even gave me an alternative contacts that would be cheaper than the ones I would normally wear. The receptionist really helped me find frames that would fit my face. She was very honest and truly helped me find frames. I practically tried on over 30 frames and finally came across one that looks and fits well on my face. She didn't seem annoyed at all since I practically had almost all the frames she brought to me to try on the table. We just laughed it off. The only downside to my experience was it took 3 weeks for me to get my glasses but I know it wasn't this company's fault, it was the makers. Aside from that, I would definitely recommend this place. My work decided to change our vision plan, so I had to go searching for a new optometry place. Of course, I went to yelp. Dr. K was awesome! He was very thorough with the exam. He noticed something about my eye that none of the others ever mentioned to me... I was the last patient of the day, but I never felt I was treated that way or rushed out the door. When I thought it wouldn't get any better than this, I met Yolanda. She is best! Usually, I am pointed in the direction of the frames and I spend hours trying to find the right size and style. Yolanda took care of me and brought all the frames that suited my face and tastes! She even threw in some frames that were different from what I would have selected. Those "different" frames ended up being the one I chose! They have a great selection and high end brand names. The whole process went by fast and smooth! read more

I have been to all types of shops from high end Las Vegas strip and Santana Row optometry shops to the ones off of Tully Rd. and Choice Vision Optometry is by far my favorite. I found a pair of glasses that fit well that I can see great out of. They shipped our glasses to my door and I could not be happier. AhHHh! Basically, I love my glasses :). This is a pretty BIG statement considering I've had glasses since fourth grade, and have left other offices only half excited to pick up frames I semi-liked. Dr. K helped me go through nearly all the women's frames to find the perfect fit for my face and tiny (yes, tiiiny) nose bridge. Eventually we came across a pair of crystal frames with white temples. Being pretty conservative, I would have neverrr picked out these frames on my own, but as I stated before: I love them & they work! I've already received a good amount of compliments :). And without a doubt they've made picking out clothes a lot more fun, and I can't say it's a style that many people have.. just yet! :P During my visit I also got a new pair of contacts (RGP's) and I couldn't be more happy with the fit. Although I first got them with a slight smudge on one of the contacts, Dr. K was more than happy to look at them and get them replaced for me. I've had issues with my RGP's at other optometrists and they seem to brush it off as, "oh.. that's just how it is." So I definitely appreciated the extra service and care that Dr. K gave to make sure I was seeing comfortably and clearly. Being a recent UCSD graduate and no longer in the SD area, I just have to say that that probably won't stop me from making an appointment with Choice Vision in my future SD visits. (Last time I was in, I already spotted a pair of sunglasses I liked :P). Dr. K is a good man. I drove all the way from Mira Mesa to see him based on a friend's recommendation. I'd say it was worth it. (Just be careful of Google Maps' directions... they weren't right..) Making an appointment is super easy. Just go to his website. From what I saw, availability is not a problem. Plenty of time slots to choose from. Yolanda was working at the front desk that day, and she was really friendly and helpful in getting me started and taking care of my insurance and all. I think it was kinda cool how Dr. K puts on your contacts for you when you're getting them fitted. (Most places make you do that yourself, right?) All the wonderful 5-star reviews of Choice Vision here on Yelp are what convinced me to immediately make my appointment with Dr Kikunaga without even looking at any other options. And, after having my exam and ordering my glasses, I know I have made the right decision. The opticians at Choice Vision are as friendly and helpful as Dr Kikunaga. After my exam, I had ample time to select the RIGHT frames. I didn't feel rushed at all. They offered to order a different color for me when I found a frame I liked, and I chose to do that. The next day the doctor called to tell me he had called the lab to determine the thickness of my lens at the outer edge. Because I had chosen a half-rim frame, he was concerned that my strong prescription would cause my lenses to look very thick, even with high-index lenses. (As it turns out, it was 6mm.) He asked me whether I'd like to continue with that frame or select a different one. This is the kind of service you won't find at Lenscrafters, JCPenney, or even many other independent shops. When I came back in to look at frames again, Yolanda had already pulled several frames she thought I might like based on the one I had previously ordered. I don't know how many times I've left LensCrafters (why did I keep going back??) feeling like I had the wrong prescription, I had the wrong frames, I had been swindled into buying a bunch of extra things, or that I was just another head of cattle at the abattoir. Choice Vision epitomizes the exact opposite of that, at a fair price. What is not to like? Dr Kikunaga and his staff will be taking care of my eyes for a long time to come. read more

How often do you really visit & interact with your optometrist? Once a year, maybe twice. Dr. K, on the other hand is cutting edge & tech-savvy!
