Opened at 11:30 for lunch and had fried rice, white rice, chicken with some vegetables and the sushi was delicious with the spicy Mayo! My husband ordered Pad Thai which was eatable for him, as he is the pad Thai king but he really enjoyed the dim sum. It looked like flowers. The service was great, friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is really pretty and clean so I was pleased. So if you are looking for a space to enjoy, this is a nice spot for family, a date or you and a friend. read more

We won't eat there a second time. Their menu mentions tomato sauce in their sesame chicken but we expected it to still taste like sesame chicken. It doesn't. It tastes like chicken rolled in a can of tomato sauce. The Crispy Honey shrimp wasn't crispy at all and the the shrimp was pretty chewy and dry from over cooking. The rangoons weren't bad. The fried rice is completely soggy. We were so disappointed. It was pretty spendy too which we usually don't mind for good asian food because we like it as lunch the next day. We threw it all out. However the customer service was definitely lacking. we felt very rushed by the server, also we requested a side of fried rice to take home to our granddaughter. came in for lunch the other day and I'd say - not the best but not the worst either. the lunch specials are a decent deal and came with a sushi roll / soup. it seems that when a place offers chinese AND sushi they rarely knock it out of the park. im normally a sesame chicken girl but the menu said tomato sauce, which threw me off. It's also rolled in sesame seeds and fried, instead of breaded - could go either way but just a heads up if you're a texture person. I ended up settling on the kung pao chicken. it was ok. chicken pieces were a little odd in texture and shape. it came with an immense amount of peanuts and baby corn. my friends have been going there for years and said the sauces tasted different than usual. one of them had to send egg rolls back because they had a strange bad mayonnaise taste to them. the crispy honey chicken was amazing! beef and broccoli was also pretty tasty. they get an extra star for friendly servers + staff. overall, it does what it needs to do. So I'm visiting Denver CO for my Aunt's 90th Birthday. So everyone in the group of seven, including my Aunt, wants to go to John Holly Asian Bistro 2422 S Downing St, Denver, CO 80210. This is a regular restaurant they go to all the time. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a very nice server named JOHN. We told him that this was my Aunt's 90th birthday and he seemed to really want to do a great job serving us. He was kind, attentive, great personality, knew the products, and one of the best servers I have experienced. The restaurant appeared to be older with a nice covered patio. It was very well maintained and kept clean. It is a family friendly place. Since it was happy hour, we decided to start with appetizers which were reduced in price. So we all ordered cheese won tons, various sushi rolls, won ton soup, pork buns, combo tempura platter, goyza, salad, and different drinks. Everything was fresh made using excellent ingredients. The portions were generous so we all got full on appetizers. We never got to order the main dishes as we had eaten enough and had food to take home. Now I let the group decide the rating for this review. 1 to 5 stars? My cousin (who was a server) said 5 stars. The six others said 5 stars. My Aunt: "Definitely 5 stars". So there you are. I've been going to John Holly's for about 10 years. The food has always been fantastic and the menu offers several different types of cuisine. I've ordered everything from Sushi to Pad Thai. My whole family went for Christmas last year, as it was one of the few places open when I got off work. My mother and I both ordered tempura and the portion was incredibly generous. I'm usually able to finish my whole plate, as it's a lighter dish, and ended up taking half home. My Husband ordered Katsu with fried rice. All of our dinners came out and only his fried rice. They were very busy with the holiday so it was understandable, but there was no communication. His katsu came by the end of the meal, but he was so satisfied with the fried rice, it did not ruin our experience. read more

I was very hesitant about this place particularly because of the many mixed reviews and the more recent ones being pretty negative. However, this place was recommended by a local family friend who has been going for years and thus we decided to give it a shot. We went on a Friday night around 7pm and it was pretty empty which was another concern, however, we still went for it. As we were there, more people showed up and quite a few got take out, but it was nowhere near as crazy as the Denver Beer Company across the street. We ordered the fate cocktail and a Sapporo beer. The fate drink was very sweet and pineapple-y and while it did not taste like there was much alcohol, I was feeling it pretty quickly so there must have been more than I thought/tasted. We started with a large wonton soup and the gyoza. I usually dislike heavy vegetable wonton soups, but I actually liked the many vegetables in this one, the wontons were actually my least favorite part of it. They were not bad, I just prefer ones that are more triangular and smooth than the bumpy rolled up ones. The large was also quite large, we only shared between two people but that in itself probably could have been the meal, we should have simply saved some for leftovers. The gyoza was really good, we both enjoyed that a lot. We then split the chicken basil friend rice and a shrimp tempura roll. To me, the basil fried rice was overly basil flavored as that was pretty much all I could taste, so I would not order that again, and if we were to get fried rice would get normal fried rice. The shrimp tempura was good! My only complaint with the sushi was that the pieces were really large so it was quite a mouthful. I would have preferred each one been split in two for a total of 10 pieces instead of 5 but the same amount of stuff. Lastly, we were served a pineapple boat for dessert which was very tasty and a nice way to end the meal. All in all, the food was good and it was very well priced. We sat outside, so I can't really comment on the indoor atmosphere, but the outdoor deck was nice especially for a summer evening. Service was also quick and pleasant. read more

My aunt and I came here for lunch together--it wasn't super busy right at noon, so we were seated and served very quickly. The prices are a little steeper than what I normally go for, but the servings are MASSIVE. The miso soup was delicious. The shrimp and veggie tempura plate was so full...we were full before the rest of our food even got there, and it looked like we hadn't even touched the plate yet. If you are looking for top-notch Chinese, Japanese and Thai food, John Holly's Asian Bistro on South Downing should be your go to! I've been coming here for years and followed them from their outpost off of Olde South Gaylord Street in Denver. Today we were waited on by Yeelang who was not only helpful in ensuring we had everything we needed but made good eye contact and was very friendly while answering our questions and taking our order. As we dined, lovely jazz music played in the background. The food was brought out promptly with the appetizer served first and then the entrees. Today we enjoyed super fresh sushi rolls. Delicious with perfectly cooked rice and delicately sliced fish. The appetizer was Japanese gyoza. They were cooked to perfection with a flavorful filling and sauce. The Singapore noodles were spiced perfectly with the best combination of vegetables and protein. The food is cooked and made to order using the best and freshest ingredients. If you have a chance to try the food in person, you should. If not, they have delivery available too! Great for those nights in or for date night and a movie at home. Or for a family dinner for the holidays. I am glad that the owner (who often is there) has such an amazing place and food for many to enjoy! I can't imagine going anywhere else! Im updating my review for COVID. Love that every time we call in they remember us, remember what we like, and remember that I like a side of sesame oil. love this John Holly because it's so close to our house. It's often not as busy as you'd think and we always get a table. The one down south, under different ownership, is always packed on a Friday or Saturday nights. Love of my life Husband and I enjoy the quietness here. The food is just as delicious as down south and presentation is usually wonderful. Why only four stars tonight? They don't have my favorite jasmine tea. Apparently me and one other person were the only ones to order it. Everybody please come in and ask that they get herbal jasmine tea back! read more

My husband I enjoy the food and sushi at John Holly's, the great waitstaff and ambiance. We dined there a few days ago and I ordered their sesame chicken and they gave changed the dish and not for the better. It no longer comes with vegetables yet the menu indicates it does. A change to a dish can occasionally be good but in this case not so much. I preferred it with the vegetables and a bit of the extra sauce provided. I ordered a separate plate of vegetables but it did not replicate the previous version. We will certainly return and soon. I plan on ordering another one of their wonderful dishes read more

I have been a regular here for 20 years. A year ago I had a bad experience due to cross contamination with avocado triggering my friend's allergy, but the owner contacted me and made things right. Only been there a few times since, but everything has been better than perfect. One of very few places in Denver that gets fresh fish flown in daily. Their King Salmon is the best I've ever had, and their Toro is usually excellent. I love this place. read more

We also had the seaweed salad and some drinks. There a complimentary pineapple boat at the end. Everything was fresh and delicious. Our requests were easily accommodated as well. I'm really conflicted writing this because I love John Holly's. I used to work at their Park Meadows location and loved the food. The first take out I ordered from here was great (bbq pork buns and crispy honey chicken). Stopped by for some take out tonight and unfortunately not the same experience. Got the bbq pork buns and John Holly's Chicken. Pork buns were once again great. The John Holly's chicken wasn't. It seems like the meat was over cooked. Super chewy/tough. The sauce isn't really sauce at all and is pretty flavorless. Instead of being a thicker/stickier sort of sesame sauce, half the container is filled with what looks (and tastes) like water. Ended up eating the pork buns and tossing the chicken. I guess this location isn't owned by John anymore though so maybe the recipes and quality are different than Park Meadows. Our Sushi sat on the counter for over 20 minutes and then we had to ask if it was ours to get it delivered, our drinks took 30 minutes and we had to ask about them 6 times. I spoke to a manager who did nothing about it. Then the bill came they did nothing and we complained they took off 10% which was insulting to any bad experience and we complained again and we are still waiting 15 minutes later for a solution. For $16.49 (the subtotal) I ordered steamed shanghai style pork buns and a steamed dim sum platter of har gau, shu mai, and seafood dumplings. I was thinking a steamed bun would be a bun and for $8 I was thinking two or three of each type of dim sum. Imagine my surprise and confusion when I got my order. I spent time trying to figure out if an item was missing. I feel like I'm being punked. As for the taste, the ones that weren't really fishy (not good for seafood), didn't have much taste. I can give John Holly's a +4. We've always had good service and the menu offerings are varied and solid. It's probably true that JH's menu is a bit aggressive in attempting to cover multiple Asian cuisines all at once but they do a very credible job just the same. We find the Thai curry and noodle dishes to be very good as are the sushi rolls, not to mention their steamed house rolls which are to die for. We prefer the Downing location to Park Meadow for its bungalow and neighborhood intimacy. read more
