My dad wanted to surprise my mom with a skylight in the kitchen, but since he's getting up there in age, he asked me to help find a contractor to do the job. I heard about John through a great recommendation from one of my coworkers, which proved to be a very smart choice. John and his assistants were very professional, kept the site clean (and our kitchen accessible during the construction) and the final invoice ended up being below the initial bid. He went over the best site for a skylight to let in the most sunlight, and helped my dad pick out the size and style. After the installation John took a look at the rest of the roof and found some rot, and recommended that it be replaced this summer. Putting all your faith in a contractor you don't know isn't the easiest thing to do, but I definitely lucked out by hooking up with John Michael. My composition-shingled roof had seen better days after a couple of decades of wear, and it was even letting in a little moisture in spots. I decided to bite the bullet and have the roof re-done. I chose to go with cedar shakes because I love the look and I understand they do better job of insulating (and with heating getting more expensive every day...). I got a few different quotes, and they were all in the same ballpark, so I decided to go with Mr. Michaels because he had some positive reviews and his attitude just put me at ease. I really wish I could give John Michael roofing a better review, but it's frustrating when you don't get a return phone call, especially when your roof is leaking into your bedroom. I can't say enough about how great an experience it was working with John. I just bought my house and the insurance company said it had to be re-roofed this year or they wouldn't renew it. I called up six roofers, only heard back from three - and the differences in attitude and prices of those three were pretty extreme! John could get started asap, seemed like a really genuine & honest guy, had a good price, and I strongly prefer supporting a local business, so I picked him. John's crew worked hard, cleaned up, and the foreman William walked up on the roof with me at the end to show the completed project. The roof looks awesome! The estimator/salesman Don was very helpful and proviced a low key but very informative education as to what I was going to need and the best way to approach the project. UPDATED: 1/12/2011 I received a call today from John, after he had read my previous review. He corrected me that the appointment I assumed he missed had never been confirmed, and I apologize for making that mistake. I confirmed it myself after checking my email archives. He also offered me a free chimney sweep to make up for any perceived lack of communication. I offered to edit my review, and he said he appreciated that, as he gets a lot of his business from Yelp (which is where I discovered him, as well). I realize that people take Yelp reviews seriously. Previously, I had given John a two-star rating, because he was not up to my standards of prompt communication. I am an engineer and work in a company where it is important to give and receive communication as quickly, yet accurately, as possible in order to achieve our large amount of work. Perhaps I maintain high standards, but the other contractors (particularly our electrician and floor refinishers) I have had on site have been able to maintain a very quick turnaround in returning phone calls and emails with pertinent information, in addition to fitting me in as quickly as possible and completing the job beyond my expectations. John did initially tell me that he was backed up a couple of weeks, and then he sustained an injury, so that added some lead time to project completion. As it is winter, he also had to wait for a non-rainy day to complete the project. I also said in my previous review that John's quality of work was not the issue, and I stand by that. He fixed some chimney problems, and I believe he completed repairs as he stated in his estimate. read more

John recently finished a beautiful roof on our Seattle/Bryant home. - very communicative on project updates, both before and during the project - clean up crew did a good job - explained the roofing system to me in detail. They fixed installation errors/missing insulation on the old roof as well. - top notch work. I recently contracted with John Michael Roofing and Skylights to install a pair of tubular skylights in my Seattle Townhome. I am very pleased with the results: I found John to be very prompt with estimates, returning phone calls & email, and on the day of installation, he appeared exactly when he said he would. The thing that impressed me the most was the thoroughness of the job... no detail was left undone. For example, John took the time to install protective plastic covering on my carpeted stair treads, and drop cloths over my wood & tile floors. Also, he took the initiative to patch and paint over a couple of small bore holes used to locate some tricky framing. When I returned home, the place was spotless. He was in and out in one day, thanks in part to the dry weather, and there were no surprises on the invoice. In short, it was a turn-key operation, with nothing left undone. We have a 6-year-old house that had a (flat) torch-down roof. It was poorly done, and we had several leaks. I had 4 different contractors out to bid the job, and after talking with all of them and looking at reviews, we decided to go with JMR. John was very patient as we spent over a year trying to get permits and costs for putting in a roof-top deck, only to find out that the costs of re-enforcing the roof, permits, and compliance ended up being way over our budget. We finally decided on doing a PVC roof with a hatch for access, and within a month of making that decision we now have a great new roof. John was fantastic - understanding, quick to respond, and willing to work with us throughout the whole process. The final cost was very reasonable, and the quality of work is true to his ratings. There are a lot of roofing companies / contractors out there - it pays to find one that takes pride in their work and is willing to work with their customers. Highly recommended! read more

Had some shingles blow off our three story rental, and tried the closest roofer in W.Seattle, and they could not do an estimate on repairs right away since it was too high for one man. Then they got back to me saying that google earth showed my roof as needing replacement due to the heavy moss they saw. Friends of ours recommended John Micheals, so I called and left a message asking for a new roof quote. Don called me back and made appointment to have a look. Don was a super nice guy who knows his stuff. After going up, he checked the whole roof, and showed me that I did not need a roof. A few spot repairs was all it really needed. Don took the time to explain to me the details, and then gave me the choice. In the end, Don did the small repairs himself in order to save me the higher cost of a crew having to come out. All with the company's full warranty. On another note, he inspected and quoted a torch down roof on another building of ours, and his quote was very reasonable. I was told Don does most of the quotes and inspections, while John runs the crews so that things are done right. Sounds good to me. read more

We had an all around great experience with John Michael Roofing! John was easy to communicate with, prompt with all responses, thorough in his explanation of scope of work and material used. He offered a very competitive estimate for our complicated roof. John started work on schedule and finished ahead of schedule (which never happens). His crew were very friendly, worked extremely hard, and did a great job cleaning up at the end of every day. They took extra care not to damage plants with construction debris and also went out of there way to protect our new driveway from the massive dumpster. The finished product looks great and John came by the day after they finished and took the time to walk around and chat about any concerns or questions we had. This is my first review and I'm sorry to say my experience with John Michaels Roofing was slightly unprofessional. I live in Shoreline and asked for an estimate on a low slope roof that needs complete replacing and Don came by and was a nice guy. However, when he was leaving he ran over and damaged some of our landscaping. I was already back in the house and didn't notice till later, but he didn't stop to let us know or even apologize. I called to report the damage and never received a call back. And to top it off I never received an estimate from them. I'm not sure why my case is opposite to everyone elses and I'm disappointed in the service I received. Sort of makes me feel like they don't care about me as a customer. I feel like this is a 2-star response - they didn't swindle me or do bad work, but their professionalism is lacking. This happened about a month ago and still hoping they call back to make this right. read more

I thought John's quote was reasonable and his roofing techniques seemed to be of higher quality than other roofers, for instance in the way he deals with troughs. It took a few days longer than expected to get the quote but they were able to quickly schedule the job and completed it on time and within budget. My husband and I bought our very old house two years ago. At the time the inspector told us the roof was on its last leg, so it wasn't a huge surprise when it started leaking recently. I got on to Yelp so see which roofer people were talking about and John Michael Roofing came up as top-rated. I must say that the service we received from them did not disappoint. I approached them right before Christmas for an estimate. I received prompt, courteous service that put my mind at ease regarding our situation. Because I am a student and working only minimally, my husband and I are trying to put this project off until I graduate if at all possible.
