Yesterday, I brought my car in for an overall checkup. I have not had a tune-up since August 2024. This was my first time going to John's and he was highly recommended by Eric's Smog Testing next door. I needed an oil change, a new serpentine belt, and front brakes. My boyfriend always takes his Volkswagen GTI to John's. They always answer the phone, are communicative, give realistic time frames, and are quick to get the job done. John is very friendly. My boyfriend has also taken my car in for small things, some as small as reattaching my front skid plate which John did for free since it was an easy fix. Not sure how prices compare to other small shops in the area, but it being so close and building up the relationship has been worth it for us. They do have a surcharge for credit, so we use debit cards to pay. Over the course of three years, I notice the decline of quality in work. I paid $610 on an all new starter for it to still not work. John told me he would check it out and I would have to pay an additional $400+ to fix something now on the relay. This should have been taken care of a long time ago, but now more problems added and it is not right.I ended up buying a brand new starter and mechanic I go to now installed it, and it works perfectly. The starter John put on my car was an aftermarket and looked banged up.. Therefore, this is a cash grabber site and no longer will be going here ever again. AAA+++ Nowadays who knows where to go, time and money are never abundant, the wrong choice can diminish both. Pleased to share with anyone my recent and first experience at Johns Automotive. My 2015 Chevy Traverse would not cool and engine warning Overheat with temperature guage at the top end, i was fairly certain it was a failed water pump, we ha discussed over the phone the remedy and the tentative cost. I had AAA tow it and leave at the shop, next morning John contacted and informed me it was actually an intermediary component of the cooling system and not the water pump. The final cost result was nearly $200 less than i was already prepared to spend. His waiting area for customers has a great air conditioner nice and cool. As a maner of practice I only deal with/work with the best, and John and his skilled team of mechanic/technicians are just that. in the event that i need another major or minor service, i wouldn't hesitate to travel even 50 miles or more for the peace of mind. i could go on and on but ill just tell you this business is exemplary of a well run trustworthy automotive repair shop. read more

CAR OWNERS BEWARE STAY AWAY FROM THIS SHOP My car was destroyed by the mechanics at John's Automotive. No real explanation was given to me or my wife by the owner John or any of the mechanics of how or what caused the fire. This happened on 11/12/23. I took our 2011 Cadillac SRX after the check engine light came on for a StabiliTrac warning. Per John the owner, the issue was the fuel injectors. The owner John called me about a week later after having my car in his shop, to apologize because my car caught on fire. Again no real explanation on how it started or what caused the fire, but my vehicle is a total loss. I had to deal with my own insurance and file a claim, while also having to worry about finding a means of transportation for my wife and 2 children. The mechanics insurance company has not done much, because they are waiting on my insurance to basically payout the vehicle. Since then I have not heard back from John asking how we are or how the claim is going, but then again I shouldn't expect A+ service from a 1/2 star location. I will never take any of my vehicles to this location ever again, even if I was stranded outside in front of his shop. I recommend you stay away from this shop, unless you want to pay for incompetent service and possibly lose your vehicle? After I shared my experience with friends and neighbors, I heard that they had a terrible experience with the same shop. I honestly only went to this shop because it's close to my home. All I can say now is what a costly and terrible mistake I made. Incompetent mechanics ruined my wife's car and have caused us nothing but headaches. read more

Unprofessional, disrespectful owner. This afternoon I called to find out if my car can be done by a certain time due to a prior commitment. John gave me a special time which I agreed with. I also told him at what time I would bring my car in - which he agreed with. Once he saw me come into his shop, he walked away in his office with his cell phone. I waited about 5 min, then politely knocked on the door. He impatiently dismissed me "I need to finish my call!" which cut me off as I was trying to remind him of his promised cutoff time. After about 5 more minutes he showed up and raised his voice accusing me of the pressure I was putting him under. I calmly asked how much longer would it take is he were to start working on my car immediately. His answer was over the time I had available. Then he asked me to come another day. I was driving from Santa Monica to Ventura when my "Tire Pressure Low" light popped on. Oh, no! I tried a few gas stations, but most are strictly that, these days, stations for gas only. Lucky me, I saw TIRES in a big sign and I turned in. A friendly man walked toward me. "Are you John?" I asked. Yes, he was there to save my day. He got all four of my tires checked quickly and the low tire corrected. He wouldn't let me pay him for his help. He also told me to keep an eye on it, that it might be a slow leak. He was right. The next day, the Tire Pressure light came on again, and this time I was on Fountain Ave. in Hollywood where another big TIRE sign came on. They took off that tire, found the nail embedded in it, and patched it for me. $40 cash. Wish I'd taken the time to have John do that for me so he could have made the money. Those of you who live in Encino, Reseda, and Tarzana are lucky enough to have this charming, efficient man, John, right there in your neighborhood. Just got my car back from John's Automotive. I called Jon's shop the night before to ask about an alignment after I did some DIY suspension work. I ended up there the next day because I had failed at doing passengers side because of a stuck bolt. John gave me a reasonable price to install my spring and do an alignment on my vehicle. When they found out that stuck bolt was a much bigger problem John called me and gave me an alternative to spending hundreds of extra dollars. He cleared the work with me before he went ahead and did it. I'm so glad I took my car there. Work was done in a timely manner, and the price was great. Friendly service. I left an review earlier this year as this shop did some work on my car. I went back a second time expecting the same results and did not get them. About $4,000 later my car is fixed (but with another shop) went to replace my rear brakes and my parking brake stopped work this job cost me 2,600 at John's automotive I learned later that the person working on my car was not certified or experienced with Jaguars and he broke a piece in the calipers. I took it to the dealer and they needed to replace both calipers at $1,300 each I could only do One of them as I had just given John $2,600. When I approached John he said let me know what we did wrong he also said his mechanic said there was a recall on my car for the parking break and the calipers. The dealer said that this was not true, and through my research I could not find the recall either. The truth is the the mechanic forced the caliper back which broke the piece that calibrates and connects my parking brake. Also they lost my key for my wheels as I have custom wheels. I have since replaced that also. Nothing but headaches!! read more
