Whistle Salon is really a hidden gem. I found it in looking for a salon that uses Kevin Murphy color and products, which are ammonia-free, sulfate-free, and cruelty-free and do not irritate my scalp like some other color lines. I regularly see PJ, whose creative energy and attention to detail exceed my expectations every time for color, cuts, and blowouts! I have just left the salon in tears. This is my first yelp review I have ever written, but I wanted to save others from what I just went through. I asked for my haircut to be "a straight line with long thin layers and not chunky up and down layers". The stylist said "yes, but a slightly curved line". Which I said yes to. I said no to a framed face of shorter layers as "my hair is curly at the front and looks bad short" What I got was two chunky lines of layers that make the bottom fan out from underneath and horrible chunky front layers that make me look like a trashy and poorly cut Jennifer Aniston circa 1990. When the stylist saw I was crying she said "your hair looks perfect, nothing to be upset about". When I was at the washbasin my colour was rinsed by someone who dropped the hose on my head which then jettisoned water and hair dye all over my face, lines of brown to my neck alongside my mascara. Then my stylist then came to wash the other colour out of my hair and almost ripped my earring out, when I yelped and pulled back she rolled her eyes and said "is it new". No, it's not new, it's 6 weeks old - earring holes bleed when the rings are yanked in your glove when you are rushing to fit me and your other clients in at the same time. I had asked for some small lighter pieces in my hair but was worried they would be damaged and asked for Olaplex. She said no, that it would stop the hair lifting and that it was only going to be slightly light er "in the brown family". I now have chunky, over processed highlights that she attempted to tone, but are still very visible. Another stylist actually asked if she wanted her to mix up more toner - before I said anything. She said no and told me "let's see how it looks after finishing drying it". It still looked orange white and over processed. When I, in tears, at the end of the appointment said I had not had a good experience due to a) upsetting and unattractive haircut b) almost having my earring ripped out and c) having my face covered in hair dye she replied "well that wasn't me". I could go on, but I look like an absolute mess, I am crying my eyes out and nothing much will fix this. Go to whistles and you too could have this luxury experience for only $284 before tip! To be fair, the other stylist I saw (short blonde with blue) did an amazing job on the client next to me, and another stylist with very blue hair did an amazing job on her client. So I think I just got really, really unlucky. Just be wary of who you get. I don't want to talk for anyone other than Dyanne who was my stylist tonight. Can anyone suggest supplements to make hair grow faster? I'm getting married in the summer. Update - I was so fixated on the haircut and overprocessed pieces of hair that I didn't notice that my roots (which was the main reason I went in) are at least a shade darker than my ends (I had gone in asking to either stay the same shade or go lighter as I didn't like how dark my hair was at the ends). Now my roots are darker than the ends of my hair (the non bleached parts) and the darkness was what I didn't like. read more

Okay people, take a seat and listen up! I am like a little kid going to the dentist when it comes to hair salons. Finding new salons scare the pants off of me. 1-Because I have a black streak birthmark in my hair (that literally every hair stylist says to me they have never seen before) which can turn orange or break off easily so the color that one uses must be top of the line 2-Colorists tend to never know EXACTLY what you want. It doesn't matter how many pictures or explanations you give them, they always tend to mess it up. Fact. 3-I hate getting my hair done and on the phone hear the dreadful "____$ and UP" and then you get done with your hair and it's like 4x the amount you thought it would be and you just had a not-so-great experience at the salon but leave spending like...rent money there. I just moved back to NYC from Miami, where, the salons weren't exactly "the best". I did find one or two that I "liked" but didn't LOOOOOOOOOVE. I haven't had an "oh wow my hair looks da bomb" moment in many many many many many x1000 years. I did my research extensively online. I tend to stick with Aveda salons because the color works great for my hair. However, I wanted to get my hair done Saturday morning and all Aveda salons were booked. I did some googling and found an article on Racked about Whistle. Then I came to my trusted Yelp to verify this article and alas, saw the heavenly Yelp reviews. I liked that Tom let me explain my hair history and didn't interrupt or rush me--which is what I expect but hardly find from stylists. He told me what he was doing before every snip as well and made sure I was comfortable with his decisions before he cut. The shampoo girl was friendly and talkative too. I felt really comfortable at the salon. At no time did I feel as though I was not welcomed. I was happy with the cut I received. Prices were average, costing $75 for my cut, but I suppose compared to other places this amount is reasonable. I will most likely return for my second cut here -- and that's saying a lot. I recently moved to NYC from Phoenix, AZ and was in dire need of a fresh trim, blow out and color. First off, I have very thick, wavy/curly, over processed and damaged (from heat styling) hair. I straighten it so much that the curls look almost like dreads haha! This can always be a challenge finding the right person for the job-usually a lot of people cower away or just refuse to do my hair altogether, which was why I was always going to my same girl back in Phoenix. So you can understand why I was very wary of who would be the poor soul to have to treat and bring this hair back to life, give it a nice trim and color just in time for my birthday coming up on the 10th. I stumbled upon this salon after reading different review sites, and was definitely not disappointed! As I walked in I was greeted by a very friendly smile and face- Angela, who would also be the one to do my hair. All the other stylists who were there were so nice and hospitable-grabbing me water, taking my jacket, asking if I needed anything while I waited for Angela to be done with her previous client. Even the colorist/assistant who helped wash and condition my hair was so nice and helpful! The whole experience was amazing! Angela listened to exactly what I wanted-how much length I wanted trimmed off and the exact color I was looking for. I was just trying to bring my original and natural color back with making sure to color the grays I was starting to see. Well, the color came out perfect with a healthy shine and the trim was exactly how I wanted it! Okay, so I went here twice. First time: - Hair cut was with Tom. Overall good experience. He was friendly, and he listened to what I wanted. I cut off 10 inches of my hair and I LOVED what he did with it. I thought I found my new hair stylist. Second time: -There was a lot of traffic. I was running late. I called to tell them I would be 10 mins late. I showed up and was a little over ten. I came in apologized and then asked if he still could take me. He stares at me, turns around, looks at the clock, turns back to me, and says " i guesssssss i can take you". Seriously? seriousllllyyy?! NOW, keep in mind this place in empty. So i'm a little annoyed, but I'm like whatever - the first time was good. After my hair got washed, he was all moody with me. The rumors are true. Whistle is truly as awesome as Yelp would have you believe. I recently had a serious hair emergency that was dealt with in lightning-fast time. Fixing and coaxing my hair back into submission, he made my hair better than before the debacle. I'd go to Tom for any and all hair issues or updates. That man knows his way around a head - however difficult the job. The salon is small, but darling. The stylists are talented, trustworthy and fun to be around. And the best part? I can't believe I paid $80+tip to look like a toddler attacked my hair with a pair of scissors. I asked for a cut at around my collar bone with subtle layers. I emphasized that I always air dry my straight, fine hair. My hair was curled at the end of the session, and I assumed that my haircut was fine because it looked okay curled. Big mistake. I felt confident that the stylist understood my type of hair and what I wanted during the consultation. I've previously had my hair cut with a razor at The Little Hair Shoppe in the East Village and loved it. However I was a bit alarmed that the stylist would stopped mid-cut with a razor, turn around, and joke with other stylists about the music in the salon. Is this why there is a large chunk of hair missing by my ear? Is this why the layers aren't subtle at all, and look completely random? Is this why the stylist didn't cross-check my "layers?" Is this why there were three, THREE sections of hair an inch longer than the rest of my base length? I have never been this mortified after a haircut. I adore my stylist, Angela. I always leave Whistle feeling happy and refreshed. Who knew you could feel that way after a haircut! I went to Whistle after experiencing a coloring job gone awry from my last stylist. I saw the Yelp reviews (thanks guys!) and requested to have an appointment with someone that can cut curly hair, and was set up with Angela. She gave me a few tips on cutting, coloring and styling my curly, chin-length hair, and proceeded to give me an awesome cut. My goal was to grow out all of the bad color until it was all my natural color, and I have officially met my goal! She has given me several different haircuts since I have been going to her, including a curly pixie-ish cut, and I have received compliments on all of them. I scheduled an appointment with her for our very first coloring together and cannot wait to see the results. A few tips about Whistle: 1) Schedule your appointment in advance, since they tend to fill up quickly. Also specify if you want a cut or a cut and color. I usually schedule mine a few weeks in advance and it works out perfectly for me. 2) Bring in pictures of what you want done. It is always helpful to have a picture for reference, since hairstylists are not psychic and cannot pluck exactly what you want done from your brain. 3) Be realistic about expectations. Let me first state, that I got a good cut, so I am giving it 3 stars and not 2. But for $80, I don't think it was worth it. I came early right after work and it was my first time in a New York salon. I picked Whistle because of the high rating on yelp and just asked for an experienced stylist that was available. I was booked with Leigh, and I had seen her name mentioned positively on yelp, so I felt confident. When I walked in on a Friday, the salon seemed busy and when I sat down to wait, I was offered tea or wine. When it finally became time to sit with Leigh, I explained to her that my hair needed a lot of help. I am growing out a not great haircut, I used to be a double process highlight/lowlight (I now use $8 box color), I am 6 months in to a keratin hair treatment, and I use a flat iron or curling iron daily. She rolled her eyes with each new mention of something I did to my hair. I know, I am hard on it, but that is why I came to Whistle seeking help and repair. She had the assistant shampoo my hair and as I walked away from her she was shaking her head as if she didn't know what to do with me. I came back to the chair and she was sitting down texting on her blackberry looking, barely looking at me with an annoyed expression on her face. She blow dryed my hair to cut, because it was just so bad to her she needed to see it dry so she didn't take too much off. She cut as little as possible while trying to freshin it up, as I am trying to grow my hair out. Please keep in mind, my hair is shoulder length and really didn't look THAT bad when I walked in. I just get sucked into the fun treatments out there that make straightening hair in humid weather so much easier. I was told haircuts range from $60-80, and she took maybe an inch off my shoulder length hair, shampooed and styled. I would try several other salons or stylists at the very least, before going back and settling on this place. read more

I feel like this salon, or my impression of it, is best represented by its decor. I've walked by it a few times and thought "Oh, those are lovely branches they've painted white and hung on the wall. Those always look nice with [Christmas] lights in them." But when I came in to the salon and discovered they were actually antlers, well my perception changed. There are tons of salons in the East Village/Alphabet City. Some good, some trendy, some over-priced, some crappy... I mean, you really do run the gamut in this neighborhood. I was afraid this would be an over ritzy/priced salon (with the delicate branches on the wall) but it turns out to have a little quirk to it (since they're antlers). The sheer volume of good reviews on Yelp was overwhelming (those reviews are well earned, by the way). I was greeted by the owner, Will, which was really welcoming; makes me feel like my business is appreciated. And I was offered a drink, which was an added bonus. And just so you know, my stylist kicks ass in so many countries and languages. Serious Abigail is serious about her hair. And so is Angela. We spent a good deal of time talking about what I want my hair to look like, where I want it to end up (I'm growing it out), what kind of hair I have, how much work I want to do on it in the morning, whether certain styles are viable with what I've got growing out of my scalp, etc. Angela is highly knowledgeable and gave me some great options and we went to work. (Well, she did the work but I feel like it was a collaboration, which is nice. I did grow all this hair so there's my work.) And what I ended up with was an awesome cut from my once and future stylist. And future free bang-trims, which I swear are like the free toy inside a cereal box. "Free toy inside! Free toy inside! In a nutshell: good haircut with some pretty good angles , but I've had better. I really wanted to find my NYC salon, I really did. I have completely lost faith in nyc hair stylists. I've tried about 3-4 different hip and supposedly cool salons, and it never turns out as good as when I do my hair in Cali. Why? Let me give some reasons: 1. It's always rushed. No client relationship can be formed when you are on a tight time constraint. Not to mention, a stylist needs to get who you are as a person (lifestyle choices, maintenance levels etc.) and your style. This can't happen over 40 minutes. I get it, time Is money , says new York. 2. Conservative. My stylists have tended to keep it safe. 3. No one can style Asian hair to save their life. It's either too thinned out or too solid. What gives? I don't want fob hair but I still want life in my hair. Yes I am demanding and picky, and borderline vain, but I think everyone deserves amazing hair & proper "hair therapy." read more

What a great salon. It's very inviting and warm when you walk in. I was greeted by Will, and he took my coat and offered me tea right away. It was great! Will was very meticulous with my hair. He really spent time texturizing and making sure the layers weren't out of control. I had one really bad haircut last year, and my next three cuts were spent fixing the horrid thick bangs from hell. I was ready to start new. Although nothing was life changing about my haircut, and was a mere touch up and chopping off two inches, I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation throughout the hour, and not having to worry about what my hair would look like. The staff here definitely knows what they're doing and the confidence shows. It looked fabulous after styling, but what always gets me is what my hair looks like after I'm all by myself on my own. Blowing, or not blowing, it always falls in the right places. Can't wait for the free bang trims. I might go back to get my bangs cut even more. I'm going back for a 2nd cut in March, and think I will try something more dramatic. :) It's nice to finally have a stylist after years of whoring it up at random salons around the city! I've always kept my hair on the shorter side and gotten it cut at a good barber shop, which was all fine and dandy. However, over the past 6 months, I've decided to let my hair get a little longer. Now that it's longer, I wanted to find somewhere to get a more stylish cut. After searching on yelp, it looked like Whistle was the perfect spot for me. And yelp, you were spot-on. I seriously haven't stopped talking about it. So, first off, it's a great little place - everyone is super friendly. It's comfortable yet modern, and without an ounce of pretention. Had some red wine to help me unwind after a long day at work, while playing with the two adorable french bulldogs. My appointment was with Tom, who had a nice little consultation with me before getting my hair washed. We talked about what I had in mind, what would look good with my face, and we settled on keeping the length, and he talked about some of the magic he was going to work. After a lovely wash, Tom began cutting away. He's great to talk to - no forced conversation or awkwardness, it was like talking to an old friend. The time went by so quickly and next thing I knew, I had the best haircut of my life. The best part about it - it's so versatile. He showed me like 6 different things I can do with it, all of which look good. This is perfect for me, because I like to tidy it up a bit for my job in an unnamed government agency. Anyway, the bottom line is - I got this amazing haircut that I swear no matter what I do to it, it looks great. I can't even explain it, and I've never had this happen before. I almost wanted to hate Whistle. I felt that all the hype was just setting them up to disappoint me. A little backstory: Whistle provided me with my first hair cut in over a year and a half. My hair at the time was an over-grown version of "the Rachel" and needless to say I needed some serious help. I have naturally curly hair that I wear straight some times but frizzes uncontrollably. I was actually teased as a child and was nicknamed frizz-ball by bullies in the third grade, but that is another story entirely. Anyways, I called in and asked the receptionist who would be best suited to cut it both ways. She recommended Aaron and I could not have been happier. He took such a long time to talk to me before hand about my hair and what I wanted. He ended up cutting my hair leaving it healthier yet somehow the same length. He then took the time to straighten my hair (over an hour) even though they were closing and I was fine with leaving it curly just because he wanted to make sure I (and he) was happy with the cut straight. It looked pretty nice when done, I was happy but did not feel it was life changing.That all changed when I walked outside. It was pouring rain that day and regardless of my umbrella my hair was in no mood to stay straight. After a night out I got home later expecting to look in the mirror and be terrified however (though my make up had ran) my hair looked AMAZING. He had cut it in a way that gave it beautiful waves when exposed to the humidity rather than just frizzing up. I decided to jut sleep on my hair that night and not wash it. I woke up the next morning (mind you this is without even taking a brush or a flat iron to it) and it looked even better. So I just went out with it as is and I was getting compliments on it all day. This is what earned Whistle 5 stars in my book. BANGS are important. ive had my bangs butchered so badly at other places, that i started to do my own. which was barely any better. i took a chance with this place and found a great stylist, corinne. i come in sparsely, every few months, but corinne gets the job done perfectly, effortlessly. she stares at my hair. snips away. snips a little more. and i always end up with perfect bangs that i am very happy with. you would think that trimming a small portion of hair would be easy.. but iT IS NOT!! as evidenced by my years of crappy crooked bangs.. every time i went to other places and asked them to fix my bangs, they just trim the existing ones. then i go home and "fix" them.. when i first saw corinne, she actually redid them completely, the way theyre supposed to be, in a manner that was balanced and flattering to my face. and they grow out great. on a sh!tty note. today i tried calling to see if she was working today, but turns out she wouldnt be back for two days.. i am kicking myself in the ass for being impatient and getting them done somewhere else today because they are CRAPPY and CROOKED =*( now they need to be fixed.... i am an idiot. read more

Seriously, if I had a dime for every time someone complimented my hair in the past few weeks, I could go buy myself a hot dog right now. I could even spring for sauerkraut! My girl is Lizzie O - has been for years now. She's seen me through short, long, and that awkward in-between stage, has streaked me with just about every shade of blonde, and even did my Game of Thrones-inspired braids for my wedding. She always remembers which shades she's tried on me, and she strikes the perfect balance between listening to what I want and offering suggestions. Did I mention that she's a total sweetheart, super easy to talk to, and her blowouts last for three days? That people are often surprised to find out I even get my hair highlighted (as if you could get streaks like this sitting in an office all day)? Cause yeah. That, too. I think I was probably even more upset than she was when I found out her former salon, K.E. Haas, was closing (just when I was due for my semi-annual cut and color, too). Whistle to the rescue! It's a perfect new home for her: sunny, pretty, laid-back, yet 100% professional (just like Lizzie!). The head massage I got during my shampoo was heavenly, and the dogs running around are super cute. So you like my hair, huh? My hair was almost down to my hip area when I decided to search Yelp for the highest rated hair salon in the city. I came upon Whistle which had almost 5 stars considering all of the reviews from different genders & nationalities. So I called to make an appointment and the first one they had available was a random Monday night in 3 weeks. 3 weeks?? I was thinking this was as great as people were exclaiming about since every single day was booked until 3 weeks... My expectations were going through the roof at this point. Finally my appointment day came along. I walked in. EMPTY. [[I personally like going to salons that are packed and noisy with girls gossiping in the background (it's part of the whole girlfriends-hairsalon-thing).]] Anyways, the only great thing about this salon was that my hair dresser was really sweet and attentive and really listened to what I wanted. HEnce, the two stars i'm giving this place... To make a long story short... I wanted bangs across my forehead. He told me not to do it ... something about the way my hair was growing out in the front. I was really upset that he wouldn't give me bangs.. so he said he'll cut layers and basically.. I came out of the salon with the SAME EXACT hair style I had walked in with... but 2 inches shorter. Paid $90 (tip included) for this plain jane hairstyle that I could have gotten my sister to do for $5 bux. Annoying. read more

I went here a few months ago and got my hair cut by Leigh. I was sort of plopped into the schedule last minute with "who ever was available." Probably my mistake looking at it now...but all the Yelp reviews were great so i decided to take a chance for the sake of my emergency weekend trip. The actual place was cute, very small but the decor was nice. There was no place to put coats, so i had to ask the girl getting her hair cut to get out of the chair, pause the cut, and move her bag and coat from the only bench for me to wait 20 minutes. The atmosphere was very laid back, almost too laid back for my taste. I waited about 20 minutes before i was taken back for a shampoo. Shampoo was okay- not memorable. Leigh was VERY sweet. Probably the best conversation I've had with a hairstylist. I wish that the cut matched the conversation. It wasn't a HORRIBLE cut- but it wasn't what i asked for and i was VERY specific because I'm a freak about my hair! I don't know HOW but somehow she seemed to take the volume and "life" out of my hair. I'm only reviewing it now because the cut has not held up well AT ALL! Don't let my review deter you- but i thought you should hear from someone who isn't a die hard Whistle fan! read more

Wow. My hair is really, really cute. My hair is always really cute....but after my cut here today with Will, my hair is really, REALLY cute. And I love the vibe. Just a little space with cool people hidden inside. A French Bulldog to greet me at the door, followed by a no-bullshit shampoo and a fantastic cut. $70 and done. Love it! I always know a good haircut when it makes me want to stay out longer, do a little shopping, wander around the city....just so I can keep catching a glimpse of my fresh new do in the store front windows. After one bad haircut in the city during my college days, I started trekking home every time I needed a trim. After five years of that, I realized I need to get a grip and find a stylist in the city. Thanks to some research and the advice of a coworker (and yelpers!), I ended up at Whistle where Tom gave me one of the best haircuts I've ever had. I guess I should backtrack and say that before I even got to the salon, when I called up Whistle to make an appointment, I was already impressed. The man who answered the phone was super friendly and excited to welcome me as a new customer, which is relatively unusual when it comes to salon receptionists who tend to be on the sassier side of things. I arrived at Whistle, which is small, simply decorated, and is casual enough that you get the sense that this place is trusted and well-respected to the point it doesn't need to be super fancy and ritzy to impress. Tom took me right on time, another anomaly when it comes to afternoon appointments at a hair salon, and listened to exactly what I wanted. He spent a few minutes playing with my hair and giving a few suggestions before sending me along for one of the BEST washes ever. Seriously, I don't remember the girl's name, but she gave one hell of a head rub. Cut to 45 minutes of cheerful conversation and a great blowout later, and I left with one of the best haircuts I've ever received. Well-shaped, perfectly styled, bouncy--I feel as if I have a new head of hair, and the best part is it's exactly what I asked for, and exactly what I wanted. You can't go wrong with the hair stylists here. I've seen four different ones over the two years I've been going here, and I've always gotten a fantastic cut. I've even continued patronizing Whistle after I moved to Astoria, Queens! It's worth the 50-minute trip, down the N/Q, over the L, and through the East Village. Things to like: * you can give them minimal instructions, and they'll make all the right choices along the way; you don't need any oversight; just relax * you can have a complementary water, tea, red wine, or white wine * you can book them for any day of the week; their hours are accommodating * the prices are reasonable, given that their business in a trendy (high-rent) area and all the stylists know what they're doing Lots to like! read more

Just moved to the East Village a few months ago from Cincinnati Ohio, and so of course needed to find a (hopefully cheap) replacement for my hairstylist back home. After letting my hair go for long enough and searching around forever, I went with Whistle based on the reviews here. I got an appointment right away with Leigh. The atmosphere was very comfortable and laid back, and they were very attentive as soon as I stepped foot in the door. Almost too attentive actually. Leigh asked me all types of questions about how I wanted my cut to look, and about my long term goals for a style. I had never had a stylist ask me so many questions before, which really impressed me a lot. I was even a little bit thrown off by how much care she took in cutting my hair. Until I realized it was only because she was giving me the best haircut I've honestly ever had. The cut cost $75, and I definitely think it was worth every penny. It's been about 3 weeks since I got my hair cut, and I'm still blown away by how much I like my cut. My friends agree, and told me they think it's the best cut they've ever seen on me. My hair always seems to fall in just the right place, and I rarely have to style it all. Leigh it truly the best! read more

My first visit with Lizzie Leigh was amazing. She listened and knew exactly what I wanted. I tried to rebook with Lizzie Leigh, but she was all booked up and I had a vacation the next weekend. I figured all the stylists would be great considering the price and the thoroughness with which they work, so I booked with Ray for a cut and color. I brought in a photo of the exact ombre style I wanted and the exact cut I wanted. I specifically said I didn't want to go fully blonde because I have naturally dark hair and didn't want to have to be held hostage to blonde highlights since the maintenance can be very expensive. I also asked for my hair to be cut to my collar bone since it grows so quickly. Ray then spent a good 15-20 minutes going through his OWN phone to find another picture to go on. He showed me a shade of blonde I liked, and I said explicitly to make it an ombre. He said he understood, then proceeded to do LITERALLY WHATEVER HE WANTED. He took me fully blonde which turned out to be a nearly 5 hour process. It was a very drastic change for someone who has never colored their hair and has had dark hair their entire life. He also would not cut my hair to the length I asked. Instead of to my collar bone, he left my hair about two inches longer than I wanted. He then styled my hair without asking how I liked my hair to look--it looked like I was wearing a wig. He then didn't even give a mirror to see the back of my head which, as it turns out, is still mostly brown. As he looked at the results and noticed I was visibly shaken, he said "Well, it's a transformation!" Uh, yeah bro. I will say the highlights and cut are really well executed, but literally like NOTHING I asked for. And any time I told him how I liked my hair, he would say that it was "not good for my face shape." Maybe not, but that's how I like it. Ray's assistant, however, was EXCELLENT. Truly professional, warm and welcoming. read more

Fellow Yelpers, I perused many many hair salon reviews before finally picking up the phone and making an appointment with Corrine. My regular stylist moved back to Paris and I thought this was also a good opportunity to move from spending $125 per cut to something sub-Benjamin. Corrine was great--even though the whole time I was hemming and hawing about whether I wanted bangs, she was extremely patient and only did what I was comfortable with. I ended up coming back 3 days later to get more bangs cut--free of charge. Super happy with the [slightly] new and [slightly] improved me! :) read more
