So disappointed in our family's experience here. This was our second visit for our child. Our first…read morevisit was complimentary due to a promotion. At that time, I went over our insurance information in detail with the front desk staff. I was told that although our insurance was out of network, it would fully cover cleanings and basic visits. We returned on 2/11/26 for our 16-month-old's appointment. The staff brought us back, asked a few questions, and the dentist examined and counted my child's teeth. That was the entirety of the visit, which was fine and expected for their age. However, when we were leaving, the front desk charged my husband $97. I was surprised by the cost given the brief nature of the visit and confused about why our insurance hadn't covered it. Since we hadn't been in since August 2025, I assumed perhaps our coverage had changed in the new year. Something didn't sit right, so I called the office the next day. I was told they had not run our insurance and had charged us directly instead. They were aware of the mistake. While I understand mistakes happen, what concerns me most is that the office was aware of the error but did not reverse the charge, notify us, or apologize. I can't help but wonder whether we would have ever received a refund had I not called. Mistakes happen in any business, but how they are handled matters. Unfortunately, this experience left us feeling uneasy about the office's transparency and communication. I have requested that any future appointments be canceled, as we no longer feel our values align.

I have been bringing my sons to see Dr Ramos for 4 years.(Both boys had their first visits at…read more18months old and then every 6 months - they are now 3 and 6). I have always paid a significant portion of the bill (80% of the charges) at the time of their visits as the office is out of network with my dental insurance. I was happy to pay my portion as I felt that Dr Ramos and Tricia (the RDA that did a majority of their cleanings) treated my sons well and provided a fun environment to promote healthy oral habits and regular dental care. I was shocked when I went to pay after their visit this morning to be told that billing had added a note to collect payment in full. I was not provided with a receipt or any documentation of the charges. My credit card was simply charged for a VERY high amount considering the amount of time we spent in the office and the services rendered. I left the office very upset that I was not informed of the need to pay in full after years of paying 80% and that I was not provided with any documentation even though I asked for an emailed copy. I returned to the office to ask for the contact information for the billing department and was told they could not provide a number and someone would reach out to me!. About 20mins later I received a call from Brenda. She admitted that a mistake had been made and proceeded to start spitting out a bunch of numbers concerning charges and insurance payments. I told her to email me the ledger and that I would call back after a meeting. I called back an hour and a half later as I still had not received the ledger. She finally emailed it over. I vented my frustration about the way I was treated and the amount charged. I told her I wanted to be refunded the 20% I was charged that insurance would likely cover. She refused to refund my credit card even though it had only been a matter of hours since they had charged it and insisted she needed to issue and mail a physical check. She also laughed at my frustration and when I called her out for laughing she denied it and didn't offer an apology. I will NEVER take my kids back! I feel incredibly disrespected by the front office staff, billing and Brenda. Even if you are treated well by the front office staff, beware that they charge large fees for basic services - $131 for a kid's cleaning, which is only a quick polishing and flossing and $47 to apply fluoride varnish.

I'm unsure about this place. I've been in twice for routine check-up and cleaning, the stuff that…read moreinsurance is supposed to cover 100%. I went in once before the pandemic and again in March 2021. The good: the place is bright and clean with what appears to be up-to-date equipment. They took x-rays which I could see on the screen. Quick and painless. The bad: I have the feeling, both times, that I was being up-sold. I understand that dental businesses don't make a lot of money on check-ups and cleaning, but that's the way it is. I don't make the rules. Both visits, they refused to do the insurance-covered teeth cleaning. They said I need "special cleaning." At times they called it "deep cleaning" and "gum scaling and root planing." Also bad: the front desk woman was rude and condescending. I came in ten minutes early, but she seemed upset that I had not responded to an email asking me to set up on their new portal. She said I could do it now, but it would take a while and if it took too long, they would have to reschedule my appointment, OK? I replied, "No, that would not be okay," remembering that they're booking three months out and I've waited the whole pandemic before scheduling this appointment. Her tone was what I'd expect a bad parent to take with a naughty five-year-old. She gave me a post-it and pen and said, "...so you can write down your username and password, so you remember it." With the looming threat of rescheduling, I hurriedly filled out the lengthy online survey of my medical history, WHICH I HAVE DONE BEFORE, probably on paper. Remember, this is my second visit. I'm not sure what crazy procedures I approved or whether I listed everything that should be listed. I made it to the finish line in ten minutes and waited for my appointment to begin. The uncertain: the dental assistant didn't seem convinced by her own sales pitch. She used vague language. She said that the routine cleaning wouldn't do any good. Last time she even said it would do more damage than good because it would just "stir up stuff." I asked if brushing my teeth and flossing was doing more damage and she seemed flustered. She listed a string of bad outcomes if I didn't approve the deep cleaning. I remember she mentioned heart attack. I was there for 90 minutes, easily enough time for a thorough check-up and teeth cleaning, but only the check-up was done - and most of that was my gums. She poked my gums with a sharp instrument - 6 times for every tooth - three places inside and three places outside. After poking around each tooth and calling out the numbers (between 2 and 4 with a few 5s on a scale of 1-10) she said, "there appears to be some blood." I figured that might be from - oh I don't know - maybe having my gums poked 120 times! But she said it indicates that I was close to having gum disease. I've moved on to another dentist. Both the hygienist and the dentist said I don't need the "gum scaling and root planing." Instead, they recommended waiting and showed me how I can better care for my teeth and gums.

My 6 year old son was seen at his regular dentist on July 21st and needed a tooth extracted. The dentist said it was urgent so she got me in the next day. They did the nitrous oxide but my son still went into a panic and was screaming so we could not get it done. We were referred to PDI (Pediatric Dental Institute) so that they could do the procedure under general anesthesia. But because we have Kaiser medi-cal we had to be seen by a dentist/oral surgeon that was in the Kaiser network. Enter in Dr. Van Tassel. 3 weeks later and after 3 canceled appointments and my son being in severe pain I called into Kaiser to get authorization to go out of network. I talked to a very nice and understanding Kaiser doctor who understood my concerns and spent hours trying to get authorization for me. Finally, he said I would be able to go to PDI and Kaiser would release my son so we could get the dental surgery done. PDI said if they received the formal authorization quickly we would possibly be able to do dental surgery the very next day. But then I get a call back from the Kaiser doctor who said that Dr. Van Tassel needs to release my son and she would not do it because she felt like she could get it done in a timely manner and would be back in the office next week so we could do an ASSESSMENT...not even the surgery. She said that it was not an urgent matter. Kaiser only gives two dates a month to do oral surgery so we would then have to wait for the opening. The Kaiser doctor explained to Dr. Van Tassel that my son was in a lot of pain and she replied that we could go back to our normal dentist to get pain management. Are you serious?!? How cold and heartless can you be to not release a 6 year who is in PAIN so that you can get paid to do the procedure after THREE weeks and THREE canceled appointments?!? This is beyond unacceptable. I will be figuring it out and paying OUT OF POCKET to get the surgery done at PDI because there is no way I would trust my son to be seen by this woman.

I had scheduled a free consult after I noticed discoloration on my daughter's front teeth. My baby was really scared and nervous but dr Smida knew just how to calm her down. After the little one visited the treasure chest of toys, dr Smida urged my daughter to sit on my lap in the dental chair. There was a lot of squirming but Dr Smida's gentle persistence got the job done. She said my baby needed crowns & probably needed to be fully sedated because there seemed to be a lot of decay. This news was shocking since I brushed her teeth at least 2 times a day. I was so devastated & emotional but Dr Smida calmed me down, assured me it wasn't my fault & referred me to a pediatric dentist. The pediatric dentist confirmed her assessment of the treatment my daughter needed (4 crowns & full sedation). It was refreshing that Dr Smida's treatment plan was identical to the referred dentist & that she didn't inflate the work that had to be done for her own profit. Because of her honest work ethic and gentle bedside manner, Dr Smida may consider my family & I her new patients!!!!

She did a "root planing" that took all of 20 minutes, did NOT plane at all - just roamed around in my mouth with a pick but charged my insurer for the planing. Then she did a root canal, she made the crown out of some extruded plastic goo that was hardened using UV light, looked pretty cheesey when she did it and sure enough it failed the next day. Was seeing her for 2 years and I gave some serious thought to filing complaints at the time but did not. It utterly destroyed my trust in dentists, I have literally not seen one since and that has been 13 years ago and have broken/missing teeth. This woman is a crook.
