Turned me away because I couldn't handle 20+ X-rays even though I told them in advance that I gagged and have muscular dystrophy.

I was scheduled to be a new patient at PMD. I had provided adequate Delta Dental Insurance and set up for my first appointment which should have involved basic cleaning and x-rays. Under the Delta Dental plan there is no charge to the patient for this service. Before my appointment, I received a call that the charge would be $250.00 I asked why the extra scanning was necessary beyond basic x rays, and was informed that Dr. Horton required a CONE CT SCAN for new patients. I researched this procedure and found that it was done for Dental Implant Planning, Impacted Wisdom Teeth, and Treatment Planning for Complex Procedures. So the CT Cone Scan is beyond basic clinical x-rays to determine cavities. The amount of radiation from this CT Cone scan is considerably greater than basic x-rays, and not necessary for a first visit. If there were more complex dental procedures determined after my initial examination, then I could consider the CT option. I asked that I could just do the basic exam first, and elect not do do the CT scan to avoid excessive radiation, and Dr. Horton refused. So I'm writing this review for ethical reasons. Here is a dentist who knows he can charge the insurance company and patient more money by requiring unnecessary procedures, and exposing patients to excessive radiation, just to have a greater profit margin. I called two other dentist offices, and neither one of them required a CT Cone scan for the first patients. I obviously canceled my appointment with Mr. Horton. read more

I went in and was told I need two crowns. One tooth was cracked and the other one had multiple cavities. I just got a second opinion and first they told me the X-rays they took were bad and didn't show the roots. I was told also I don't need the crowns. They can do fillings for the cavities and my tooth is not cracked! But what they missed was that my other tooth may have a bad root canal possible infection. But they couldn't tell because the X-rays were bad and didn't show the roots! It really sucks that you are just expected to trust these people to be honest. Had a dental emergency with a possible infection/tooth abscess, I was told to go to modern dentistry by my primary office who couldn't see me immediately for an emergency on Monday morning. I was half way to the location when I got a call telling me they couldn't help me since they weren't my primary dentist despite the office accepting my insurance. I explained the unbearable pain that included face swelling, possible infection and how I was sent to them through my other dental office since their "sister offices". She continued to say she couldn't help me and wouldn't accept the secondary insurance through my parent. I pleaded with her explaining how I couldn't get in anywhere else and I needed to be seen and she continued to say she couldn't do anything. I called my insurance back and they said that location should've taken me despite what they were saying because everything they told me was against the way they should be doing things. Do not waste your time trying to be seen here for a dental emergency! The lack of care or even consideration by the office was unacceptable and unhelpful. My Wife recently went to Petaluma Modern Dentistry as we have coverage there through Kaiser/Delta Care to have a chipped tooth looked at. She was advised that the tooth had to be pulled and then she would need an adjacent tooth crowned and then a bridge installed. The cost to pull the tooth was $539 or $1,359 for a "bone graft for ridge preservation". The cost to us, for the crown and bridge was $6,500. Total cost to us could have been as high as $7,859. We chose to get a second opinion from our local dentist. He took an x-ray and determined that he could remove the chip and save the tooth by putting a filling in place. We chose this remedy. Total cost to us will be about $300 to $400, AND my Wife would NOT need the tooth pulled. Advice to all who read this and plan on having Petaluma Modern Dentistry perform any extensive procedure performed like pulling a tooth, etc., get a second opinion as this was not the first time they provided a high priced unnecessary quotation to remove a tooth. read more

I would have given 5 stars because I have always loved everyone in this office and have been a patient for years. Great care. They don't push unnecessary dental work in you. Sweetest staff...until the new front desk gal Rose, that must have replaced sweet Victoria. She is condicending and treated me like I was 12. For someone who should be the face of the office. She needs a serious attitude adjustment. Without going into all the details..let me just say I left pissed off. I had a great appointment with my fabulous hygienist..then had to deal with her. Depending on your insurance, you'll pay $189 to several hundred dollars for this procedure out-of-pocket. You will not be able to schedule a "routine cleaning", which is fully covered twice a year by most dental insurance policies. After years of neglecting my teeth I finaly bit the bullet to get implants done. First appointment was good. Xrays taken and a quick chat with the destist. They wanted a check in with the oral surgeon who is only in twice a week. That cost me $50 just to say i didnt have any questions. It took them longer to take my payment than the conversation i had with the oral surgeon. I recieved an email the next day with the cost... way higher than i would ever pay. *hint* I could buy a new car for that much. I'm unsure about this place. I've been in twice for routine check-up and cleaning, the stuff that insurance is supposed to cover 100%. I went in once before the pandemic and again in March 2021. The good: the place is bright and clean with what appears to be up-to-date equipment. They took x-rays which I could see on the screen. Quick and painless. The bad: I have the feeling, both times, that I was being up-sold. I understand that dental businesses don't make a lot of money on check-ups and cleaning, but that's the way it is. I don't make the rules. Both visits, they refused to do the insurance-covered teeth cleaning. They said I need "special cleaning." At times they called it "deep cleaning" and "gum scaling and root planing." Also bad: the front desk woman was rude and condescending. I came in ten minutes early, but she seemed upset that I had not responded to an email asking me to set up on their new portal. She said I could do it now, but it would take a while and if it took too long, they would have to reschedule my appointment, OK? I replied, "No, that would not be okay," remembering that they're booking three months out and I've waited the whole pandemic before scheduling this appointment. Her tone was what I'd expect a bad parent to take with a naughty five-year-old. She gave me a post-it and pen and said, "...so you can write down your username and password, so you remember it." With the looming threat of rescheduling, I hurriedly filled out the lengthy online survey of my medical history, WHICH I HAVE DONE BEFORE, probably on paper. Remember, this is my second visit. I'm not sure what crazy procedures I approved or whether I listed everything that should be listed. I made it to the finish line in ten minutes and waited for my appointment to begin. The uncertain: the dental assistant didn't seem convinced by her own sales pitch. She used vague language. She said that the routine cleaning wouldn't do any good. Last time she even said it would do more damage than good because it would just "stir up stuff." I asked if brushing my teeth and flossing was doing more damage and she seemed flustered. She listed a string of bad outcomes if I didn't approve the deep cleaning. I remember she mentioned heart attack. I was there for 90 minutes, easily enough time for a thorough check-up and teeth cleaning, but only the check-up was done - and most of that was my gums. She poked my gums with a sharp instrument - 6 times for every tooth - three places inside and three places outside. After poking around each tooth and calling out the numbers (between 2 and 4 with a few 5s on a scale of 1-10) she said, "there appears to be some blood." I figured that might be from - oh I don't know - maybe having my gums poked 120 times! But she said it indicates that I was close to having gum disease. I've moved on to another dentist. Both the hygienist and the dentist said I don't need the "gum scaling and root planing." Instead, they recommended waiting and showed me how I can better care for my teeth and gums. read more

PMD showed me the price sheet, simple extraction $55.....while sitting in the chair in one of the dozens? of rooms waiting for the dentist for the five minute pull, an assistant came in, begging me , how important to prep it after the extraction with cadaver bone in case there's a future implant, how essential.....I asked how much, they said $1500 and I said no, just pull it, they returned to the warnings and begging me to get the essential-for-future implant procedure, offered half price, and I felt convinced? intimidated? by their sincere pleadings for my future bone rehab and said ok.....extraction takes 5 minutes, stuffing in cadaver bone fragments? takes another 3 minutes, and bang for my buck.....$855............... read more

I was just recently here for a check up and exam . I saw Reanna the hygienist and she is so sweet and efficient . Each time i see her my teeth feel sparkling clean ! I saw Dr Szutz for my exam and his professionalism and bedside manner makes you feel comfortable which is hard to find in a dentist ! There should be a zero or negative star option. In almost 20 years with my current dental insurance, I've never had an issue with a dentist. Using this dentist was the worst experience I have ever had. First, they LIED about the dentist being a provider, even giving me official looking paperwork detailing my 100% coverage. I specifically told them I do NOT want to be up-sold anything, and yet every conversation was trying to sell me more expensive options, even trying to hint that this crown could need to be a root canal, adding that I needed excessive work that my prior dentist confirmed was completely fabricated. Now I am convinced they did all of this on purpose to force a root canal to happen. They BUTCHERED my crown either on purpose, or the dentist was incompetent. Which one is worse? They are not providers so I have no recourse. I can't afford to pay full price to have another dentist redo the same crown, but even if I did, how do they mold and fix a completely botched crown? I was told if there were any issues they would get me in right away, but they couldn't fit me in for over a MONTH after the crown. I have been in tears over this all day because my follow up visit is scheduled for today and the thought of going back is making me physically ill. Don't go here. Don't trust them. Don't risk your money and your teeth to these people. Demand a pre-determination from any dentist you see in order to be sure you are covered. This dentist convinced me they had one, and that was a LIE. I researched dentists for months before deciding to go to them. I told them what it was that I did NOT want from a dentist, and everything I said was completely disregarded. I am educated, very thorough, and this sort of thing does not happen to me. I made the mistake of trusting a place that is not trustworthy, they were very convincing, they provided documentation and even showed me a screen "linked to my insurance" showing full coverage. VERY long lengths they will go to in order to take your money. DO NOT USE THIS DENTIST OR ANYONE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS CHAIN MONEY GENERATING PRACTICE!!! You have been warned. read more

They told me, like I read on another review here that the dark roots on the x rays were infectious and all needed canals w/crowns. I was suspicious since it seemed highly odd 3 of my teeth have died within a year and there was nothing wrong with 2. So I looked on yelp and read about the up selling complaints etc and decided to get a second opinion. Sure enough after a consultation I was told I only need 1 crown. ONE. They insisted I needed THREE + ROOT CANALS. They were willing to grind down my choppers all for profit when was not necessary. First. I've never have left a bad review. Anywhere. My regular dentist was booked up for a few days. I felt a chip in a tooth and stoped here to have it looked at. After x Ray they insisted that I needed a root canal. And tried saying the shadow on the x Ray was infection. I told them I have no pain at all and think I only need a cap and decided to aSit to see my regular dentist. Sure enough my regular dentist took x-rays and said there is absolutely no infection put a cap on my tooth for a fraction of the price of what they want to for Ruca now and here I am almost a year later was a perfectly healthy juice no root canal needed and no infection. As a kid, I would dread going to the dentist - the scraping of the teeth, the gross taste of the paste... Ick. Never did I think I would find a dental office that I got excited to go to! Everyone in the office is so friendly, they remember little things about every patient and make it feel like an at home environment. I especially like that I can watch food network while in the chair! Janay always cleans my teeth so thoroughly before Dr. Szutz comes in for the exam, and they both are so great! It's nice to not feel awkward with a practitioner, and feel comfortable to let them know what's going on because you know they have your best interest at heart and really want to keep that smile healthy!!! These guys are solid. I previously had trouble with the same two teeth for years and tried several different dentists. I had them worked on so much that other oral issues were being neglected. PMD gave me a plan, took care of my problem areas and sent me on my way. Now I just go back for regular cleanings and the occasional checkup. My most recent visit was more of the same quality care. I've never really had a problem before with PMD and they've always been able to book me for both cleanings and dental emergencies even during Covid-19. I get that it's been a crazy couple of years, but I've been trying to make an appointment for two months. The booking service is never able to find an appointment. They then say they'll reach out to the receptionist to see if they can find something and then I get no communication back, not even a form email saying that they apologize for the inconvenience, but due to high demand post shut down they are unable accommodate. If it's a lack of staffing, hire another dentist or technician, because the demand is clearly great if there are no available appointments for the rest of the calendar year, per the booking service. read more

I scheduled an exam with PMD because I had black marks on my teeth and was having sensitivity when chewing. I have Delta Dental insurance, and exams are covered 100%. So I scheduled an exam. When I went in for my appointment, I was told a breakdown of what would be done: I would have x-rays and a periodontal exam to check for inflamed gums. I was told that before we start the exam, they needed some photographs of my teeth. I'm pregnant, so we didn't do x-rays. I was given the periodontal exam and told I have severe periodontitis, and needed a root scaling and planing in all four quadrants of my mouth: an $850 procedure. My concerns about my tooth were not addressed, and the tooth was not discussed at all. I've had no sensitivity, no inflammation, and no bleeding in my gums. I was skeptical of the "diagnosis" and decided to get a second opinion. (Final verdict: I had a cavity and will be getting it filled by the second dentist I went to. I asked about periodontitis, and was told I have NO GUM DISEASE WHATSOEVER. Not even pregnancy gingivitis. A root scaling and planing would be completely unnecessary. I was given a false diagnosis that they would charge me $850 to "treat." The more I think about it, I start to wonder if such malpractice is worthy of a lawsuit). I decided to never return to PMD. I thought it was over. Until I got my bill in the mail. Exams are covered 100% however, this office neglected to tell me that images are NOT part of the exam, and neither is a periodontal "screening." So now, in addition to ignoring my concerns and telling me I have a severe condition that I don't have any form of at all, Petaluma Modern Dentistry is charging me over $150 for photos and a screening that I was led to believe were part of my covered exam. They billed it separately from the exam, so my insurance doesn't cover it. My new dentist, has said that they get several patients from PMD with a similar story to mine: got diagnosed with severe periodontitis at PMD, asked to pay $800+ for scaling and planing, yet exhibit NO symptoms of the condition. Petaluma Modern Dentistry, despite its local-sounding name, is part of a large chain of dentists. The ones we're told to be skeptical of for over-treating and misdiagnosing to squeeze a bit of extra cash from patients. Do yourself a favor and find an ethical dentist. If there were less stars or a way to flag for poor business practices I would have rated less. First, it takes a LOT for me to write a poor review. But this is mind blowing... I cracked a tooth and called my typical provider. She saw me but was booked too far out to do the root canal and crown. (2weeks) Totally ok, my fault for waiting so long. Either way, her office contacted the insurance and gave me a breakdown of the quote. A few days pass, pain increases to the point I can't sleep and can't eat. So I go to my insurance web page and look for an emergency dentist. Found Petaluma Modern Dentistry on there and they have the extra flag on their adding that they have the best value service. How could I go wrong?? Called, got a next day appointment. Show up and front desk is ok. Nothing wrong there. Get the x-rays and the tech could not have been weirder and kept going on and on about their digital x-rays being better. Blah, blah, blah. All I heard were money money money. It cost more for the type of x-rays they do than the traditional ones per my research and warnings from my dentist friends. Anyways.... Sit down and the dental tech sits with me waits for the dentist. Dentist comes in and I see his face light up. Yes. My mouth needs a lot of dental work... then I get the lecture about all the stuff they have to do and all the equipment they have to do it. I re-focus him on my issue. He starts talking about the WRONG tooth. I tell him that's not where the pain is and that is not what I was there for. Still... he goes on about a different tooth. Very condescending because I clearly dont know my body or which tooth is causing pain. Seriously?? Ok, I let him finish. I ask about the one in pain and it's the same diagnosis as the original office. I need a root canal and crown. He warned me his root canal specialist is only in on Tuesdays for limited hours but if it wasn't soon enough, they would find someone outside their office. Fine. Totally get it. I went in on a Wednesday so a whole week before the pain could be addressed. He asked about the pain, told him how much it hurt and his response? "We don't prescribe pain meds at all here." Really? Did I even ask? Check my med history, I'm in NO way looking for pain meds. Degrading and offensive to assume that's why I came.... then he says the person who can book the appointment will be in shortly and get things settled. Great. I just want my mouth out of pain. At this point I'm annoyed he thinks I want pain meds and pissed he didn't take me serious about which tooth was hurting. I can feel the crack on my tooth! One of the girls from front desk comes in, shows me the root canal specialist availability. 4 weeks out... really? C'mon... this is an emergency! My other dentist was 2 weeks out. But these guys can do it all in one day. So I hear her out. I did ask about outside root canal specialist the dentist said he could refer me to, oh boy, she did not like that option. "It will cost more, we can't guarantee their work, we don't really give out referrals." Every reason why I should stick with their person. I ask again this time more firmly and remind her I didn't think of it but was offered by her boss the dentist. She avoided it then was snarky and said, "if you want to waste more money, then we can try." Girl, it's my damn money! Yes. Give me the referral. I want the pain gone! Then the best part came.... the break down of the bill. It would cost $966 for total procedure with their root canal and crown... the original dentist I see? $340 for EXACT SAME PROCEDURE! and..., 4 weeks out. I left super upset, confuse, and so ashamed I let them in my mouth. So... lesson learned. Do your homework. They are NOT in the business of caring and helping people. They are there to make money. That's it! I read how many seniors go here, and I see they offer some convenience since everything is in house. But man, you will pay their 300% mark up. Be warned. Don't even try. Already filed a complaint with the insurance carrier for unfair business practices and will continue. Can't stand to see people taken advantage of like this. We come here trusting you'll help us. Came in recently for just my 6 month check up, usually I would see Dr Szutz (he's the best in my opinion) but when you're the best...you become very busy! (So book your appointments peeps) BUT, I got the pleasure of meeting the new DDS there. Usually I'm skeptical on providers I don't personally know but Dr Lam was AWESOME!!! She was so gentle but made sure I got a good cleaning! She's very knowledgeable and just all around great and I'm so happy I got to meet her!! I'll be seeing her again next week! I just cancelled and made other dental plans. My experience has not been good. It is a clean, modern facility, but I don't believe they act with integrity. I am (was) a patient through DeltaCare USA Plan, and that plan states that I am to get two cleanings per year for a $5 co-pay. When I first went in, they said they had to diagnose me, and then they said I needed some type of "super-duper" cleaning, which cost me a couple of hundred bucks more. Now they say I need to come in once every four months (which isn't covered in the plan) -- once every 6 months is. They also said that I would need another "super-duper" cleaning, rather than the one with the $5 co-pay. When I said that I would like to stick to a regular cleaning every 6 months, they said they had to act "according to the diagnosis they made," and would not give me the regular treatment I asked for. So it basically comes down to: Here's your great DeltaCare plan, very inexpensive, unless we decide that you need to have more costly services done more often, in which case, you have no choice in the matter. So if I continued on their plan, I'd be paying $600/year plus the $360 per year premium. Basically, it felt like they were trying to take advantage of a senior citizen (perhaps they feel senior citizens are easy targets, or can't read what their plan offers) who could be tricked into being taken for a ride and made to pay them more money. So, yeah, I made other arrangements. read more

I'm sad to read the couple of bad reviews here, which were strictly based on the patients' insurance plan. Dental insurance is not like medical insurance... it pays for necessary annual maintenance and a percentage of the portion of other higher priced procedures, where there are varying grades of product that you can choose from, usually covered at a varying percentages of the contracted procedure. I know this because about 25 years ago, I worked as an insurance biller and receptionist for a dentist in Long Beach, CA. So, in my case, I had two broken upper front teeth that needed crowns. My insurance would pay for both teeth crowns with my co--pay being only $75 each, but I would have had the lowest aesthetic result because that would have been a metal crown with porcelain baked on top and would have looked very fake (not translucent like a natural tooth,) but would have saved the function of those teeth. I could have chosen between two other, more expensive all-porcelain crowns (with translucency and very natural looking.) One price would have been a co-pay of $750 for each tooth or the top-of-the-line of $1000 copay for a custom-designed porcelain crown that is super strong and translucent and comes with a 5-year warranty not to break at all or 100% free replacements. Those teeth are so important to be very strong for biting into hard foods and for looking natural, that I opted for the $1000 each co-pay. But that was my choice entirely, and I was not given an up-sell or any pressure at all to choose the most beneficial (also most expensive) option for me. So if you choose more that your insurance coverage pays out, don't write a bad review saying that the dentist or his staff try to up-sell you... it is entirely your choice. They could have easily done that to me if that was how they operated, but they did not, so I'm here to say it probably doesn't happen. I loved the treatment that I received, it was top quality and painless, and since he is also qualified as a cosmetic specialty dentist, he does amazing, thorough work. I just moved to Sonoma County a year ago and I can tell you that I have found MY dentist! I highly recommend Dr. Szutz and the wonderful staff at the front desk! read more
