We have maintenance agreements for our HVAC and generator and have used them for electrical work. The maintenance agreements have paid off, preventing some issues that if unnoticed would have led to costly repairs. They let us know when it's time for routine maintenance, show up on time, notify us when the tech is on the way. The technicians have been skilled, polite and respectful of our property. Customer Service & Business Practices Substandard. The company's expectation that a customer pay $375 (over multiple service visits) to diagnose and replace a universal accessory part (condensate overflow pan switch) that costs less than $40 and is commonly known to go bad is outrageous at best and unethical at worst. I contacted company for a diagnostic service call on my AC unit which they installed four years ago. When I spoke with the on-call technician and explained my problem (no low voltage power at thermostat), he stated that my issue was likely caused by a bad condensate overflow pan (COP) switch or a CS-2 condensate switch and this was very common occurrence. The next day a technician arrived and diagnosed the problem as a faulty COP switch but explain he would have to order the part and could come back to install. He was able to bypass the COP switch and got the system running again. At the conclusion of the $254 diagnostic visit, I asked the technician to provide me a quote to (1) replace the COP switch and (2) setup annual service agreements for two home HVAC systems. After four business days passed with zero communication from the company, I called to ask on the status of my repair estimate. When I called the main line, I was immediately interrupted by the sounds of multiple employees yelling across the office and someone yelling back into the phone at another employee before I was hastily transferred to Cathy in the service department. After the abrupt and jarring transfer, I spoke with Cathy to request a status update on my repair estimate. After a brief review, she explained it was her fault that she "misread" the ticket and closed it out rather than develop the requested repair estimate and contact me. She explained she would call me back later that day with the information on the repair estimate. When Cathy called me back, she provided me a repair estimate in the amount of $123. I asked Cathy if she could provide me the part number for the COP switch and an itemized quote (i.e., parts and labor). Cathy said she could not provide an itemized quote but she would transfer me to another service department employee to give me the part number information. When I was transferred to the other service department employee I was told, "It is just a COP switch, I cannot give you the part number, and that's the cost, $123. I can put it on an estimate for your approval and we can be at your home the next business day to install." I was disappointed to be met with animosity, indifference and hostility on asking reasonable questions (i.e., what is the part number?) to understand if I am getting an appropriate value to replace a $20-$35 accessory part under a $123 repair estimate after paying $254 for the original diagnostic fee on an AC unit that is less than four years old. I can only hope that my experience is an outlier and does not represent the company's customer service policy or its standard business practices. read more

I have a PTAC wall unit that was making a lot of noise. A technician came to my home and he was very inexperienced. Could not find the reason for the noise so he stuck cardboard sheets between the wall and the unit to try to reduce noise. Did not service the unit or clean it. Could not offer advice for replacement. This totaled 160$ for 30 min of services rendered. I ended up taking the unit out the next day by myself, to find that 2 important screws were missing from the fan casing which was rattling and causing the noise. After discussing with the company the possibility of a discount I was promised a callback but did not hear back. Addendum: As a response to this post the company did call back and offered a 50% discount for the services offered. read more

I a few years ago, I had to either repair or replace the HVAC system in my house. The existing system had been a problem ever since it was installed some 20 years ago. It never worked right (even though it was a 'top of the line' system) and was always struggling to cool the house. I won't mention the contractor but they were not very competent in either the install or ongoing service. Suffice it to say, the problem had everything to do with the people/company and nothing to do with the quality of the equipment. It may have been the wrong equipment for this house but it was still high quality. Anyway, in the heat of the summer, the system would not cool below 85 degrees and I had to open windows and run a box fan at night just to get cool enough to sleep. I was talking to a good friend about needing a new system and he mentioned that he had a full new system installed by John Waters a few years back and he was very satisfied with it and the business. This information was timely and welcome as I knew him to be a stickler for quality (if not perfection) and he is also a mechanical engineer. I had already started calling around and had gotten some quotes but I had not made any decisions. So I called John Waters. Mr. Mike Becht (sp?) came out to talk to me about a new system and he could not have been more professional and respectful. I told him what was going on. He confirmed that not only was the existing system old and in need of expensive component replacements (which the other contractors also said), but he also made me aware that it was not the proper capacity for the size of the house.. which explained at least part of system's struggling in the summer time. He laid everything out regarding available products and which options were most appropriate for the size of the house and the efficiency level options. At no point did I ever feel like he was trying to over-sell or otherwise not have my best interests as priority. He spent a lot of time measuring and analyzing the house (even noting the areas and amount of sun exposure) to make sure the system would be the most appropriate system for maximum comfort and efficiency. Anyway, we settled on a completely new system (furnace, condenser/heat pump, thermostat, humidifier, etc.), everything but the existing duct-work except for where it needed to be widened near the new unit's larger intake to expand capacity and improve air movement/flow. A few days later, the guys came out to install everything and they did a fantastic job. They were quick but did not rush. They didn't make any messes and they cleaned everything up and fully tested the system before they left, taking all of the old equipment away with them. The whole job was completed in less than a day. About four or five years have gone by now since the system has been installed so I can also testify to the ongoing performance and reliability of the system as well as the ongoing regular maintenance which have all been great. The system has resulted in a noticeable reduction in energy costs over the old system (even as rates have increased AND despite the fact that the new unit is larger and more powerful than the old one). The new GUI touch-screen electronic thermostat is a breeze to program and adjust. The condenser is super-quiet. One of the guys who installed the system is also the guy who comes out every six months to service the system and replace the filter which is great because he knows the equipment very well and I never have to show him where anything is. I really couldn't be happier with the product and the service. This is a all new gas furnace and heat pump system and it wasn't even the 'most expensive' system I could have gone with but I am very impressed with it and it serves this house perfectly. Not a bit of trouble so far. I also checked prices with a few other contractors at the time and all of them were at least 15 to 20% higher on their estimates... and for lower-grade equipment. Also, the price John Waters quoted me was the price I paid. No surprises. I got a ten year parts and labor guarantee in that price w/lifetime parts guarantee on the condenser. And the annual maintenance contract w/24 hour emergency call priority is very reasonable (though no 'emergencies' yet). If you need a new system, I would definitely recommend checking with John Waters (ask for Mike Becht) to see what they can do for you. There's no cost him to come and figure out your best options and provide an estimate. They do excellent work. They are honest, courteous and respectful. I had a repair back in September and it cost me 2 visits and it was fixed on my HVAC to get my AC working again. Come winter and I need to use my furnace it is just pushing out cool air and not hot air. The same maintenance staff that came in September showed up again. I was glad because he worked on my system before. He told me my furnace was a "water furnace" and caused me to stress out because I had never heard it and they don't service "water furnaces." After consulting with my realtor and looking into my inspection, my furnace is GAS and not a "water furnace" aka GEOTHERMAL. Needless to say it appears he did not want to be on my property working to make sure everything was working properly. I won't call back for any more service requests from this company. read more

Glad I had John Abell from John Waters come out and look at my A/C. He came to provide a second opinion from a prior diagnosis. I was told by someone else that I needed an entirely new A/C system because the compressor was faulty and it would be too costly to replace. It was only six years old. Found out from John that this was entirely incorrect and that I only needed coolant. It pays to get a second opinion and I am thankful I found someone with integrity. They seem to be fairly reasonable on pricing although I didn't shop around too terribly much. $405 for a diagnostic, testing, 4lbs of coolant, and the coil cleaning. You can't put a price on honesty, except in my case where it may have saved me greater than $2,000. Thanks so much. We had a seemingly great experience and built a lot of trust given that the tech said the job he completed was easy and charged us a bit less than the estimate. We thought we had a company to call. To our surprise we got a call weeks later saying we agreed to an estimate and we needed to pay that amount even though the job wasn't worth that amount. It would follow that this company would never ask a customer pay more than the estimate which I find very hard to believe. If they do work for you don't pay more than the estimate. They've established a policy wherein the estimate is the actual bill. We'll keep looking for an honest electrician. read more

We used john Waters beginning over twenty years ago and have always been satisfied until the last time. We wanted an outlet added in the foyer. It literally took all day. The technician was young and probably not real experienced, by late afternoon he asked if he could come back the following day...are you kidding. We said no and we finally did get the outlet but we also were left with a whole in the wall and a big mess behind furniture upstairs, and a large gouge in the wood trim of our stairs from a drill that he tried to hid with caulk....really, who caulks WOOD. I would not have been upset by these findings had he simply told me but, trying to cover damage up was annoying and created additional work for us. We decide to call them for an outlet in the bathroom closet, had it scheduled and they canceled. They were having their holiday party.. Finally, We purchased an electric fire place and needed a dedicated outlet. The fellow came out, hardly spoke unless spoken to, seemed unfriendly. He said I should hear back with a quote the next week. I never received a quote, called and still no quote. This was it for us, to bad, , we had been loyal customers too. We found a new company who did complete our projects and are friendly and reasonable. read more
