Thoroughly disappointed. Seemed like a great place. Tried to visit once before...but were turned away when their hours are only til 9. Anyway...found ourselves in the area and thought we'd try again. Definitely overpriced. While the atmosphere is good. Tonight we were i the mood for burgers. Ordered a Brussels Sprout appetizer (good) it came out after the entree my wife ordered. The burgers...well I could have done better at Red Robin for 1/2 the price. Served with fries that were "iced" with salt (terrible). Came out so late...we weren't hungry anymore. I really love going to John Wright: the food is wonderful and there are a few different ways to enjoy it. They usually have some unique specials that never fail to deliver in quality. There's 3 different areas you can sit in: the bar, the dining room, and the outdoor patio (seasonal). The bar is cozy and intimate while the dining room has a great view of the river. The patio has a different menu and is a nice change of pace when it's open. They have a decent selection of wines along with the standard beer and cocktails too. My friend got the bee's knees last time and really liked that. I got the "house white" wine. One of the specials that changes regularly is their soup. I had the crab and asparagus soup and it was awesome, although it was a huge portion. I also got the catfish nuggest, which I didn't quite care for. They were a bit dry. I should have stuck with my regular order of pasta-less vegetable lasagna. It is out of this world! I've always had great service there (especially when sitting at the bar and Annie is working), but the last time we were in, our waitress left us for 20 minute blocks while we were waiting to order or for drinks. I always give a place a few chances before I make an opinion (unless I'm WOW'd ). I've come from here disappointed a few times now. First, I must say, the outdoor area is amazing! If you are there to sit outside and eat one of their pizzas, your golden. The menu for the outdoor area is different than indoors. I was hungry for a more traditional meal. I was told we must sit inside to get that menu. I ordered ceviche as an appetizer. It was bland and unimpressive- lacking in enough Lime juice, Avocado and salt. The remainder of my meal was ok. Last night 11 of us gathered here for a wonderful dinner in the heated porch. I had a seafood gumbo that was spicy with shrimp, scallops, beef & rice, it was delicious! We have been going here for years but no more. We went there recently in late July 2020. Everytime we have every been there it has been mostly women. Warning to men - they make good salads and crab cakes and that's about it. Fast food hamburgers are better than their $15 burgers. Pork tacos (also $15) looked and tasted like HS cafeteria food. My wife's salad was mediocore according to her. Have not had a good non-salad meal in years there. Usually view of river and old bridge is outstanding. Not this time. They put up a tent for added seating during Covid crisis. Blocks 90% of view. Your choice is for seating is presently hot sweaty tent with some narrow view or no view at all unless you like side of a enclosed tent. I suggest they raise flaps on tent to allow breeze and views through to river. read more

Came in for dinner outside at the pizza patio tonight. It started raining but there was a nice awning over the outside bar to keep dry. Meg helped us out, she was really personable and made a mean mojito. She recommended the chimichurri pizza, the steak was perfect and the sauce was something to rave over. Each time my family and I have eaten here, we have been disappointed. However, due to the location, we have been willing to go back to see if our experience would be any better. After last night, we will not be returning. The food is overpriced and it is lacking in flavor and quality. My husband ordered an $18.00 salad that had wilted lettuce and was very small for the price. His beer was flat and tasted like vinegar. My child's chicken tenders had a strange breading on them and were gross. Lastly, the deviled eggs tasted like mustard on an egg and the crab soup was mushy and just seemed off. What takes the cake is that on two different occasion, we were told certain areas were booked when they were not. First time, we walked in with no reservation and our hyper young child were told it was completely booked even though only like 5 tables were full. We felt lied to but chalked it up to it being a Friday night. The second time, we had a reservation for the pizza patio but decided to eat from the full dinner menu. We asked to sit on the regular patio and were were told it was booked. While we sat in the dining area and ate, we waited to see if anyone else was seated on the patio area because only 3 tables were full - no one was. In fact, when it rained and everyone from the pizza patio came over to the regular patio, it was made clear to us that the patio was not fully booked. Disappointed to only give two stars and that is for the beautiful view. If it were not for the view I would not have returned since the last two visits over the past year have been not been good experiences. I was meeting a friend who is from the area and this is convenient and pretty. Sadly, once we were seated, offered water and coffee (breakfast).... and eventually needed to go ask someone to take our order. The breakfast took quite a long time to arrive and others seated after us were served first. Our waitress, although not rude, seemed as disinterested in us and our experience as you could imagine. We waited for coffee refills (as did the table next to us) until we were almost finished. She really was not attentive to us at all. Twice after being served I needed to get the attention of wait staff because our waitress was not around. The food was breakfast. I ordered Candian bacon as it is usually leaner than regular bacon....it was swimming in grease....I picked up a pc and it was dripping. My over easy egg was over cooked and again...dripping in butter/oil. I could not eat either. My friend had french toast and it seemed fine. The sad thing...the last time I was there it was winter. We were put at a table in a plastic wrapped porch area..it was ugly and the sun was killing us..... we asked to be moved to inside as there were lots of tables. The man refused to move us with no good reason. We left without ordering. So...if it was not for the view I would never eat here. I sure hope someone can get a handle on the service. Just got back from here for my fiance's 40th birthday. Pros: *The Atmosphere. Inside is very nice and spacious. Patio and bar is very nice and offers an incredible view of the river. *Drinks: Nice variety and delicious *Staff was friendly Cons: *The Calamari: Came out as a gumbo soup, not an appetizer. Was not described as such on the menu. The smell made me gag. *The burger: over cooked, over charred. The roll was stale. bleu cheese was runny *The Price: I could get a better burger for a 1/3 of the price at my local hole in the wall. Tiny steak with a 1/2 scoop of potatoes was $26. I would definitely go back here for drinks, but will not order food again. I expect a bit better for the pricing. read more

I enjoy both indoor dining and the pizza patio at John Wright. The indoor dining is a bit pricy, but the food is delicious. The pizza patio is priced well and the drinks are yummy. My girlfriends and I often choose the pizza patio for our girls' night out dinners in the warmer months. The service is always good too. Oh, and the view is spectacular. read more

A York County, PA hidden gem. Tucked away in the town of Wrightsville along the banks of the Susquehanna River, in a great restoration of an old historical building is the John Wright Restaurant. Our first trip to the patio was so relaxing and enjoyable I decided to invite the entire shift of firefighters that I work with to kick back and enjoy the excellent brick oven pizza, cold spirits, live music and the lazy flow of the Susquehanna. I corresponded with Jim Switzenberg, director of operations to make arrangements. Upon our arrival we found our table waiting just as Jim said it would be. All the items and details I spoke to Jim about were passed on to our waitress and taken care of. Customer service is a high priority at JWR. The patio is very open and spacious, one of the best outside seating restaurants you will find in the York-Lancaster area. The patio menu is separate from the inside restaurant menu. You can check that out on line before you go. The brick oven pizza is excellent; we have had both the grilled chicken and crab. We like the fact JWR practices "Buy fresh; Buy local". When I inquired about the dessert pizza and heard the words, "local peaches", I knew we had to have a couple to end our evening. They were excellent and a big hit. The live music, "Cooper Sky", was an added bonus to our evening. Being a Saturday night and very crowded, our waitress was attentive to our table and the wait for food and or drinks was well within reason. Numerous comments were made on a "great choice" and "good job" which is exactly what I was hoping for. read more

Yet I received an e-mail (from the John Wrights Restaurant names are not important here) thanking me for my honesty. I was asked with whom I spoke when I made the reservation and to hear of this was very disturbing was or is not acceptable behavior within their business and will be addressed and corrected immediately, I was invited with family and friends to the establishment (John Wrights) to "thank" me personally for the provided information. I had to create a yelp account just to share my utter disbelief that horrible establishments like this stay in business. Don't bother wasting your money on any food or drinks here. The view is free. I'm embarrassed that my parents took me here and wasted hard earned money for quite possibly the worst food I've ever eaten. The pizza was bread, no sauce, and distasteful cheese. The burger medium was extremely well done. The chicken my mother had wasn't even fully cooked, to which the waiter said that's not good and still charged us $18 for it. This place is pretty fantastic. The food is uniformly great, the service is good, and the place is beautiful. There's something for everyone here: a bar, outdoor seating, and a gorgeous dining area surrounded on 3 sides by glass windows. There's also a cute gift shop that's pretty big. Tons of Vera Bradley if you're into that and also Life Is Good items. My big tip: head to the back of the shop and go upstairs!! There's a tiny art gallery up there but more importantly there are amazing cast-iron items for sale. Handles, locks, cookware, stepping stones, etc, etc. And they are VERY reasonably priced. Overpriced and dishonest. The 'lump' crab cake is $25 and consists of one small crab cake made of backfin crab meat. There is ZERO lump crab meat in this dish. The filet mignon has little taste despite the high price tag. The view is nice and atmosphere is nice, but the food is terrible. It's a shame. Yet, with these old classics the wright twist is infused to take the dish to the next expenssive, enjoyable, very very eatable level. I'v come here 3 times and I guess I have to admit it's because of the views. The huge outside brick patio has breath-taking river views. The steak salad, grass fed cow was customary. The lobster mac and cheeze was fantastic, but I could eat toilet paper wrapped with that kinda killer cheese. Steak was perfection, seasoning was steller. This place is AWFUL... Crab soup- not edible due to the amount of salt. Asparagus- cooked to mush Black bean quesadilla- filled with grey sauce- not a bean in sight Salsa- they mistakenly put cold marinara in the bowl House burger- tasteless w/o any texture- surely a cheaper grade of beef than you'd expect. I will start by saying that I have only been here for Sunday brunch but a half dozen times or more. We keep going back because the food is the real story and is very good. It is a small high quality buffet which I prefer over the 120 items of just fair food. The bacon and made to order omelets are a favorite. I would give 5 stars but service is consistently less than average. I have sat for an entire meal and not been able to get a coffee refilled and have gone to get a pitcher of water to refill our own glasses on another occasion. Kind of a strange set up. The patio has a lovely view of the river, (one of the only spots in the area with a river views) but a limited menu. You can however get wood fired pizza, which was what two of us ordered and it was really tasty. One person in our party ordered a pulled pork panini which was supposed to come with chipotle BBQ sauce. The sauce was completely left off the sandhich and the pork was bland and not really pulled - just tender. We asked for BBQ sauce on the side, which was forgotten until we reminded our waiter. By the time it came, the sandwich was mostly gone. Wine is served in small plastic cups. Service friendly, but a bit lacking. We were also informed that the indoor patio has a more varied menu with upsale choices that included lots of fish and pasta, but then no wood fired pizza. Hence the strangeness. Come for the patio view and music, not necessarily the food and you won't be disappointed. read more

Not sure what's up with the negative reviews. Our lunch experience here was fantastic. Sat outside on the patio, overlooking the river. Service was friendly and attentive. I got the tomato basil bisque and the Rueben with sweet potato chips. My coworker got the crab and asparagus soup and the crab cake sandwich with potato chips. Everything was excellent, prices were in line with the atmosphere. I'd definitely eat here often if I was a local. read more

Ate here twice today. Lunch was the best experience I've had in the area recently. Great burger, great prices, great atmosphere. Didn't feel rushed to get out of there, even during a busy time of day. One of my favorite parts was having my mustard served in a dish. I hate when nice dining establishments serve me condiments in disposable, plastic cups. Loved the lunch experience. Dinner, not so much. Too expensive for the quality of food, too loud, and the service wasn't excellent. I'm not the best cook and I know I could have made my meal at home better and quicker than I received it at John Wright. Takeaway: go for lunch. Go home for dinner. read more

Dinner at John Wright in the neighboring town to York in Wrightsville, PA Is like coming home to be a part of an enjoyable family reunion. The atmosphere is a pleasant strong, robust, brick and steel historical vibe. The service is amicable and willing to go the extra mile. The lighting is just enough for privacy and the seating arrangements are nurture family-style, get together-Tom Pontz' jazz feel with a selection for indoor or enclosed-outdoor. This building is a remodel of an old warehouse and although music was audible enough for comfortable conversation across the dinner table, the historical elements were held onto for ask-only patrons to likely eliminate any unnecessary distraction. The separate square island bar sat nearly ten chairs per side. The food selection varied from farm to fresh ocean, lake and river fish variety. I had the Sesame braised Tuna steak while the other dinner guests at my table enjoyed each of their respective and distinct dishes . I would add more hummus to the apppetizer plate, but there was just the right amount of food per each entree dish. The bathroom was large, quiet and clean with both private door and urinal stalls to the floor. I would alter the lighting arrangement slightly to be on the face a bit more, but only because I can get slightly Premadonna. A nice sized parking lot and built adjacent and alongside the river in view of the historical Wrightsville bridge. This place is a must-visit for out-of-towners like me and advisably a no-brainer for somewhere to take your significant other. ($20-30/dish, but could easily get an under $30/two if non-drinker and totally worth way more in comparison to the value you'll get. These are a good bunch of people.) read more
