Seated first, had to ask twice for menus and then we're served last. Two beers we ordered sat on the bar for ten minutes until I asked a staff member to retrieve them. Pizza was under cooked and soggy. Hamburger ordered well done was raw in the center. Staff is curt and rude except for the bartender who always has a smile and is very pleasant. Not being shy I didn't tip and left a note of complaint on the check. Save your money and go to one of the York golf courses for excellent service and food in their outdoor venue! As an aside, many of the online glowing reviews are written by the staff. Don't believe me, research it yourself. read more

Visited for the first time recently. What a gorgeous view of the river. A little too hot, but after a few drinks we didn't mind. Service was slow at first, it was busy. Later we moved inside to the bar and had a blast. For being first-timers, they sure made us feel welcome. Our food was plentiful and very good. Not fine dining, but it was a nice evening. Went on Saturday for brick oven pizza and enjoy Father's Day and great weather. I ordered the 12 "crab pizza , a frozen drink and my husband ordered a cheese burger and a beer. The pizza came and was so small with burnt crust, my frozen drink was so strong I couldn't even drink it so I had to order a soda , my husbands burger wasn't anything special and came with chips. To my surprise when the check comes my total was 56.00! I thought for sure they gave me the wrong check ! Come to find out my shriveled up pizza was 17.00! The cheeseburger was 15.00 and then I see they take it upon themselves to tack on an 18% tip so it's already added in and printed ! Uh no way will I be returning to any restaurant that pulls that little trick ! I decide how much tip my server should get ! I could have had a full dinner for that price. ! It was our third visit for dinner along the Susquehanna River. Very nice menu and as before, everything was delicious and the service attentive. One complaint, and this is directed at not only this restaurant, but to all restaurants. Don't label something that it is not. Last night I ordered an entree size portion of "gumbo" now I knew it was a particular take on the dish as scallops were in the mix. But, to my surprise, instead of a roux based stew with rice served on the side, it was for all intents and purposes, jambalaya. Delicious yes, gumbo, no. Why is this? Why can't menus give a clear picture of what they are calling this or that, especially when it is a classic dish? I shudder to think what they would do to paella. It was also on the menu. read more

They make you do math in order to find out the price of the food... very childish... I just think people don't go to a restaurant to see math problems. They go to restaurants to have a good time with family and friends and that's what is all about. But when you bring math problems into the picture it changes the mood... I ordered the Louisiana shrimp that cost 20 dollars thinking it was gonna be really good shrimp with plenty of food. Instead I got little bit of rice, pees, and shrimp. Shrimp taste like regular home cooked shrimp is good but nothing exciting. Very disappointed... SMH read more

This place was great. Came here for brunch with my mom and even though it was humid and overcast, we sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful view of the grounds and the river. A wedding party had been taking pictures and it really is an ideal spot for it. There's a nice little store attached to the restaurant so you can buy cool things while you wait for your table. The brunch was awesome and I went back for many seconds, and the service staff was very welcoming and enjoyable. I'd definitely recommend checking out this little gem only about 15 minutes from Lancaster and right near the Turkey Hill experience. read more

I can't quite understand the low ratings. I had a lovely experience at John Wright. I do notice most of the lower rating reviews are from a year or two ago so perhaps they might have tightened up the place. We had wonderful service, great beer, and a great lunch. My favorite was the cream of crab with asparagus soup. It was some of the best soup I have had. I love cream of crab, and I never had it with asparagus. I love asparagus too so this was a fantastic combo for me. I had the shrimp salad BLT. The bread was a bit too much, I should have done what my dad did, he had his made open face. I did eat the second half with only one slice. The shrimp salad was good and the portion on the BLT was perfect. My mother had a turkey flat-bread and she made many comments about how delicious it was. All three of us enjoyed the broccoli salad as a side. The desserts sounded so good but we were stuffed. The view is superb, it's just too bad it was a bit too hot for the patio that afternoon. I hear they do a lot of events on the patio that sound like fun. They also do weddings, what a beautiful backdrop! They also have a gift shop, but since I'm from York I didn't really need a souvenir to take back to CO with me :) read more

My academic interests are primarily in post-Communist systems, and so I've spent a significant amount of time traveling in East Europe. John Wright still lays claim to the poorest customer service I have ever experienced. The staff lied to us. They didn't want to accommodate our 5 person group on the patio. They said it was fully booked. Our loud, smoldering perch inside had a great view of their empty patio. Next we asked about the wood oven pizzas the place is known for. John Wright Policy: You can only order pizzas if you sit on the patio. Stunned silence. Luckily we had plenty of time to come to terms with this gastronomical brainchild of Vladimir Ilych and Joseph Heller. It took 20 minutes for our drink order. Over 90 minutes later, we noted with dismay that our food still hadn't arrived. The waitress was indignant rather than apologetic. When the salads came, one of our party's orders had clearly been forgotten. Of course the check was wrong, and we were not offered dessert. But who would want dessert after a 2 hour first course? Visit John Wright if you want a Kafkaesque lesson on Soviet mentalities, not if you want to have an acceptable dinner. read more

Great find in Wrightsville, PA, York Co. Here with the family for Christmas Eve dinner. Our dining experience was excellent--good value, menu selections for everyone in our party, good service and, the most important, well prepared meals by the kitchen staff. It was also a huge plus to see the resto purchasing from local providers. Keep doing this! It keeps money local and supports very hard working local farm families. I had the "local grass fed steak" in demi glas and garlic mashed 'tatos. The sirloin was a very high-end sirloin cut. Other diners ordered the veggie lasagne, the blackened tuna and salmon on top of a bed of udon noodles and the baked trout. We all shared a bit and enjoyed the food. On the drinks front, Good wine and bubbly selections both by the glass and the bottle. Oh, and since our views of the river were fogged in, we will be returning next time we are in town. Beer selection was good too bit didn't have a chance to sample any. There was a stoudt on Nitro that i would have liked to try. I have been very pleased with the quality of restos popping up in York, Co and hope this can be sustained. read more

The location can't be beat. It's a beautiful view of the Susquehanna and the Columbia-Wrightsville bridge. I've never had breakfast there, but my parents go to JW every time they visit the area. They say they really like the breakfast buffet. My bf & I went for dinner and the only disappointment was the *lack* of a view because we couldn't be seated by a window. But, not all the seats can be window seats, so we got over it. He raved about the filet mignon. Perfectly cooked to medium-rare. I had the pasta in a garlic afredo sauce. It was the best alfredo I've had in a long time. The garlic was at a perfect level. If I could I'd hire the bartender to stand beside my couch and hand me "Chocolate-Covered Banana" martinis to me all night so that way I wouldn't have to worry about driving anywhere. I'm not always one for sweet martinis...but, wow, that one is better than any dessert. read more

My family had planned an afternoon at Turkey Hill Experience so we needed to find a place to eat beforehand. Not being from that area, I luckily stumbled across this restaurant and was VERY happy. I called ahead of time and made a reservation for 10 (5 adults, 2 babies, 2 toddlers, & a 6 yr old). The table was set up and ready for us when we arrived about 20 minutes early for a Saturday lunch. The room is gorgeous with exposed beams & glass all around - I guess I would describe is as an industrial sunroom. I loved the decor! Having a group like our's, eating a meal together is always a bit stressful, but this couldn't have gone better! The kids played outside while we waited for our food. The noise level was high enough that when the babies were screaching like eagles, I didn't have to worry about disturbing other guests. We felt completely at home and weren't having to reel our toddlers in when they weren't in their seats as there was plenty of room between our table and other guests. The food was really good - I had the turkey wrap & my husband had the turkey sandwich - both delicious! I had the blackberry spritzer which was a bit pricey but yummy. They only serve pizza after 3pm and it was too hot so they weren't serving pizza at all. Not sure why they do this, but I would have liked to have had that option. Also, they didn't have printed kids menus so they just gave us some paper and crayons for the kids. I would definitely go back, but I doubt I'll ever be in that area again. read more

John Wright Restaurant has fantastic crab cakes. We were visiting and heard good things about the restaurant and decided to give it a try. We are so glad that we did. Any time we are in the area and have the time to make it we will be sure to go. Not only are the crab cakes delicious the atmosphere was superb. The dining room overlooks the river. We waited 20 minutes for our drink order to be taken,only to be given the wrong drinks....we ordered our food hoping for the best but we were very disappointed when it arrived .....very average! bland! ( reminded me of hospital food) the shrimp had no taste and were like rubber and my wife's salad looked like they got their greens out of the trash( wilted with brown spots) I had better food in my school cafeteria!....also very overpriced for what you receive..... but the atmosphere is nice! read more

We hear people rave about this place so we figured we would try it. The food is mediocre. We ordered the ribeye and it was very bland except For the huge dollop of bleu butter plopped in the center. The salad was small and wilted. We ordered the spring rolls for an appetizer. They were good but why do they serve three spring rolls To a party of two? The waiter could hardly be bothered with us and when he took my glass to refill my unsweetened tea, he refilled it with soda. Just overall disappointed at this place. We had high hopes for our Family Christmas dinner. I have to preface that we are not a group that EVER complains unnecessarily or sends food back. We just muscle through and would choose not to return. It started out bad and ended bad. Firstly, my husband ordered a bottle of wine. Specifically a bottle of Campo viejo we saw when we entered. Our waitress said "Sure! Absolutely!". She brought us a bottle of "El Serrano", not even close! It was a private label wine from a restaurant up the street apparently. We didn't say anything. It was fine. The first appetizer arrived. The Spanish octopus. Everyone enjoyed it. I ordered a beet and goat cheese salad. It was haphazardly plated. The fried goat cheese "quarter" was cold and hard. The dressing was good. We ordered the fillet medium rare. It arrived well done. Had to send it back. It didn't arrive until we were finished eating. It was boxed and taken home. Next up the scallop fettuccine. It was awful. The pasta was a gummy goey mess. The flavor was disgusting. Two bites and set aside (not comped) I did tell the manager about it when she picked up the uneaten plate. Not even an apology offered. Seafood manicotti was also a disappointment. The rigatoni with sausage did not yield any complaints. Very disappointed all around. The worst $250 spent in a restaurant. We really wanted it to great. Our kids just moved in the area and John Wright is close by for regular visits. Never again. read more

Wasn't impressed with the crab soup- cream of crab should have some lumps not just the strands like Maryland crab soup. Taste was decent though. Mains- scallop fettuccine was about just ok, noodles were undercooked a bit, scallops were ok- could have been seared longer, tastiest bits were the mushrooms. Caprese salad was a good size with the tomato a little tough. Pros- prices are good, view is great, should be a good summer place to visit. read more

Ate here during the lunch rush, and service was glacially slow. The room is also a big echo chamber. So, chattering diners become so loud that it's hard to hear. The food is fine. They are very proud of their sourcing, and the kitchen makes a lot of things from scratch that almost every restaurant buys in, like salad dressings. Nothing we ate was a knockout, though. For my main course I had the local grass fed steak with mushroom demi, garlic mashed potatoes and vegetable of the day. The steak was cooked perfectly and tasted great, as did the rest of the meal. My wife had the roasted beet and goat cheese salad with salmon. She was quite pleased with her choice. First time at John Wright's...a pleasant dinner with husband, son and son's girlfriend. Restaurant is located in an old warehouse, with multiple bars, indoor and outdoor seating, and an incredible view of the Susquehanna River. The restaurant was packed yet with our reservation we were seated quickly. Our waitress was attentive, prompt and courteous. Dinner for 4 with tip ran a reasonable $125 and included one draft beer. The house special tonight was swordfish which my husband said was tasty though an extremely small portion. The noodle free vegetable lasagna was a hit, rich with a flavorful sauce and mozzarella cheese. My son had the lamb tortellini and a cesar salad. Both were tasty and filling. I opted for the Paella which had some nice sized shrimp, miniscule calamari and a bit of pork. While tasty, it isn't a true Paella but more of a brother rice with fish. No crispy rice and too much broth. We skipped dessert. A nice find...we'd go again. read more

I will preface this review with the fact that we have frequented this restaurant in the past and will again in the future, but had to comment on the food provided for their New Year's Eve dining special. This was a pre-selected menu in which you had a choice of one of four appetizers and one of four entrees. I ordered the Lobster Bisque and my wife the Pork Belly appetizers. My "bisque", if you want to call it that, was like the water you boil the lobster in. There were 5 tiny croutons and one very small shrimp in my cup. Other than that, just flavored water. Very disappointed. The Pork Belly was hard as a rock to cut and chew. Appetizer score = C-. For the main course both my wife and I ordered the Filet Mignon. Mine medium rare and hers medium. When I cut into mine it looked fine. Upon the first bite I thought it tasted funny. As I was having my wife try a bite of my steak the manager came by to see how our meal was prepared. I told her that my filet tasted "off" and she said that they were marinated. My wife spit out her piece from my steak and proclaimed that that piece of meat was spoiled. I tasted hers and the funny taste was not present. I will give the manager credit for handling things promptly and correctly. She took my plate and I had a new serving within 5 minutes. It helped that they were making a lot of the same entree for 100 people in the restaurant. If you're still reading at this time, the remainder of the meal was fine. But not worth the $70 per couple price tag for the special evening. Like I said in the beginning, this was not our first nor our last visit to this restaurant, but I will not attend another "special" function again where meals are being prepared enmasse. read more

I walked Into the restaurant deck and the person I was meeting was already sitting at a table for four and there were two of us. I said excuse me please and walked past the line of about 5 people and walked to my friends table. The table was not under a market umbrella like many of the other tables so I asked if we could please sit at one of the open tables with a better view of the river and under an umbrella as it was very warm and sunny. I was told to walk back the the Maitre d and ask, so my wife went back to her, she came back with my wife and told us that all the tables were reserved and sat us as far away from the view as possible and in partial sun. To the servers credit we asked for an umbrella and she found and set one up for us. OK, if the tables were reserved I understood but in the next two hours we sat there the approximately 8 tables went unused.....I found this to be pretty rude and unnecessary. If the food was amazing I would consider going back, but as I have often found restaurants with good views often have marginal food.....The burger was decent but no better than average, the bun was so dry that I threw it out. I ordered broccoli instead of potato chips and it came with the chips, my friend ordered an American pizza and got a Margarita pizza instead. Marginal food, attitude and lack of courtesy........I will not go back and I live within 10 minutes of the restaurant......I had such high hopes, dag-gummit. read more

We decided to drive out to Wrightsville finally, after a few times of visiting Colombia and not going across the bridge! What a fantastic view this restaurant has! We got there around 2:20, and they close 3-4. We were just planning to shop in the adorable gift shop, The Gardener of the Owl Valley, but the hostess asked if we were there for lunch, so we sat down to eat! There were only a pair of people there, that soon left so we had the whole place to ourselves. The decor reflects the cast iron that is made in the area, if I'm not mistaken, in that building specifically. (We weren't sure what was upstairs) we ordered the soup and salad combo, crab and asparagus chowder and Nantucket salad. Hubby ordered the Wright Rachel sandwich with broccoli salad and a lemon cello martini. The crab chowder was fantastic! Not something I usually order but so good. Salad was fresh and nice with good feta from Lancaster. The sandwich was tasty with sweet coleslaw. Service was very attentive, we didn't want to linger as they were prepping for dinner. Lots of weddings/receptions take place there. We def will go back if we are in the area! Check out the old kiln across the street too! read more

This review was for Sunday Brunch only. Arrived around noon for Sunday brunch. Got a seat on the patio with a beautiful view of the river and the bridge, with chairs already facing towards the scene. Our server also happily pulled over an umbrella created the perfect temp and keeping us out of the shade. I'm sure many people know the feeling of thinking breakfast brunch is a good idea, and being thoroughly disappointed. I set myself up for this experience..however..it was anything but! All of the food was fresh, and looked like it was actually made with an effort beyond heating up mass-product food and being thrown into a warmer. The waffles were (relatively) not soggy. The sausage had to have been local or house-made as I cannot recall tastier sausage. The sausage gravy was amazing with chunks of biscuit (that also appeared to be homemade) tossed already in the gravy. This place seems to know the right balance of knowing just the right amount of food to bring out to make sure its always replenished, but never sitting too long. I actually would love to come back! The only thing keeping this from a 5-Star was the service. I am not sure if the server thought he didn't have to tend as much, due to us basically serving ourselves food. I would have liked to see him swing by a few more times, and any alcohol drinks took about twice as long as they might normally...(restaurant was not packed, although huge and moderate business). read more

Had a very nice dinner last night. Enjoyed the wonderful view of the river. Service was good. The food was good as well. Very generous portions, so can take some home or share. The tortellini duck confit was very tasty but a little oversized. Not a problem for us because we were happy to take the extra home. Small plate of scallops were well-seared and served with a delicious sauce. Liked the small plate of roasted Brussels sprouts. Good to share. Managed to find room to split a dessert among the three of us. It was a peanut butter chocolate bombe. Very rich but also good. Solid food, good service and a beautiful view.
