Johnnie's Drive-in is not only a Tupelo favorite but a must stop for Elvis fans the world over, including myself! I've frequented Johnnie's more times than I can count, but today I wanted to experience it with a fresh perspective as that of a tourist in our own backyard...and it was FANTASTIC! I started out taking plenty of photos outside and reading the Elvis landmark. You can park and they will come out and take your order, but for the full package you gotta go inside. So after entering, I requested the Elvis booth, but it was already taken, oh well. But while I was waiting for my food, the booth became available and I was ask if I would like to sit there instead...well yah! I was super impressed by this cause they understand the connection their patrons, new and old-timers (today I qualify as both) have with the total Johnnie's / Elvis experience. Now for the food. For my sides, I ordered the onion rings which was large, crisp and tasty. The kind when you bite into them and the whole onion slice doesn't follow suit. I also noticed they started offering fried green beans! Now, I'll eat green beans when my wife cooks them, but I'm NOT ordering them off a menu (just not how I roll). But this intrigued me so I decided to give it a try... Let's just say that I can't imagine eating green beans any other way! Give-um to me battered, deep fried, with a side of ranch any day! Now for what I came here for...the Johnnie's burger. You've probably already noticed I've got 2 burgers. Y'all may not have known this cause it's NOT on the menu, but if your "in-the-know", you can order a JUMBO Johnnie's burger for $2.50! And it's huge! Made the same as the original with mustard, pickles, and onions but super-sized. It was a wonderful experience and not one that should be enjoyed just by excited visitors. Stopped there for lunch on our visit to Tupelo. It's a very simple place with simple menu but with great people. The food is very good but I think that it would be more. Once in Tupelo, you must stop there for a burger. read more

This was one of places in Tupelo that Elvis "The King" loved to eat. Legend says the Beatles also liked the BBQ here. I think the BBQ quite frankly sort of sucks here and the burgers are decently mediocre. I think the best things to eat here are the entree type items. They have some nice history posted inside this joint so its definitely worth a stop just to see this place and it certainly appears as if it hasn't changed in many years. The ambiance is throwback cool while the food is mostly underwhelming some of the entree items are good Southern cooking. read more

Stopped by, because Elvis ate there, but you can't go inside, the whole point of going, the doughburger is a novelty item,try one to say you did, but not good. The "ribeye " sandwich is processed meat, and is not good, very salty,the fries are well, fries. The one time we will probably visit Tupelo and couldn't go inside. A 2 is generous. OK food quality. Small restaurant and small booths. Large people would probably have issues being able to sit in the small homemade booths. You also have the seasonal threat of being flooded by an Elvis tour group who's there to take pictures. Locals tend to eat in their cars, and they do have car service. If you're an Elvis fan, come for the nostalgia and enjoy a burger meal that won't break the budget. read more

Little hole in the wall place that serves up cheap great food! We got to sit in the Elvis booth where Elvis sat when he came to Johnnie's. I ordered the dough burger and onion rings and it was probably the best onion rings I've had. Definitely worth the visit. read more

I love going to this place when I am in town for softball tournaments! It's so cool being able to sit in the same booth where Elvis sat. Yes, I agree with previous comments about the food being basic but I mean obviously you can look at the exterior and tell you aren't at a trendy NYC restaurant. The people here are always so friendly and sweet. One summer, the lady at the register knew my order because I ate there so much. I always get a few dough burgers, tots, sweet tea and ice cream. Johnnie's Drive In, is a great place if you are in the mood for a simple cheese burger or sandwich. The food is okay, simple and very basic with excellent prices. The food is nothing special but it seems special when you are eating inside Johnnie's! Johnnie's has an Elvis connection because Elvis, loved the dough burger at Johnnie's and he was interviewed there by a reporter after he gave his Tupelo homecoming concert! Johnnie's has an Elvis booth you can sit at and enjoy your burger. The people who work at Johnnie's are friendly and they are always smiling! l wanted to eat here after I found out that Elvis had eaten here on occasion. I was hoping it would not be too crowded so I could sit in the booth Elvis sat in. There is a picture above the booth of him sitting in the same booth. An article below tells the story of the picture. When I arrived I saw that it was empty and was able to sit in it. The owner and the staff were so welcoming and friendly. I decide to try a dough burger and it was great. If you are an Elvis fan or if you just want some good food from some good people this is the place. I highly recommend a dough burger. I will be back next time I am in town. read more

Locals love this place, but if I were looking for good food and not nostalgia, I'd go elsewhere. It's old, dirty, smells like old grease and virtually all the food came frozen off a Sysco truck. Not impressed and not a huge Elvis fan, so won't be back. Supposedly they have good doughburgers which is some nasty concoction from the depression where they didn't have a whole lot of meat, so they stretched it with dough. I know I shouldn't knock it till I try it, but I ain't try in' that. read more

not good as it once was.. originally had some real bbq, a real smoke pit.. so the BBQ isn't all that great now days. The dough burgers are not bad but not the way the original owners made it. I went here with my sister who is a big Elvis fan but an employee was sitting where Elvis always sat not eating just talking we stood for a minute thinking she would see we would had liked the seat and by our underknowledge of the place that we were first timers, but no again!. The girls that work there are rude and will only take your order between cigs and personal phone calls. I got a $8.00 chicken plate and asked for ranch but the lady ignored me to flirt with another male guest, my food was nothing but grease and the fries were limp! I was never asked for a refil even though she could see my empty cup from any angle of the small dirty cob webbed filled room. This place is a rip off! I would like to add maybe if I was a male I would have got good service at the least Not a good place to go if you want good food go to Knights Much MUch better people and food!!!! You want a gourmet burger? Then go elsewhere. You want a regular meal served by real regular people then your in business. We stopped here while visiting Tupelo to visit Elvis' birthplace. Had no idea there was anything at this place to do with Elvis. We like to visit small indy business over the chain eateries. It just looked like a good old school kinda place that had been there a while so we tried it. It's a drive in but we were on motorcycles so we ate inside. We had no clue there was any Elvis attraction to the place. Once we sat down and realized the walls were covered with elvis photos we figured it was due to proximity to the museum. Turns out a younger Elvis used to like going there to eat once in a while. Not sure if there's any truth to it or if he had a favorite booth or whatever but all the attractions aside: The wait staff was awesome. Food was tasty and helpings were plentiful. The manager (maybe the owner?) was a super nice guy that came over to check on all the customers and we enjoyed some convo about his bikes over the years and what we were riding. Overall I'd say if you go to Tupelo and don't grab a burger here then you are missing out on experiencing a local favorite. And I hear it is the oldest surviving eatery in Tupelo as well so go check it out. read more
