We stopped by Johnnie's after a three day camping trip up at pictured rocks. One of the most memorable burgers I've had. When we walked in we immediately knew we had found the place: unpretentious and relaxed vibe, the kind of place you could stop for a drink after a long day at work, or bring your family for dinner. Apparently Johnnie's is new but it feels like it's been there forever. I especially appreciate the wood ceiling over the bar. The burgers were excellent (I had a one-pounder), very juicy and deeply satisfying. I also had some coffee, which was strong and fresh -- high-quality diner coffee. Lastly, our waitress, Lee Anne, was very accommodating. In addition to the prompt and attentive service, she let us have free access to the classic juke box. We stop here whenever we are in the UP and always greeted with a warm welcome! The appetizers are above normal , like the fried cheese curds and clam strips have meat to them! We enjoy the large draft menu with my favorite Johnnies Ale! A Julie box, pool table and even hand toss room! We were in the area for the truck show and every place downtown had a crazy wait. Decided to get out of town to see what we could find and Yelp directed us here. We were not disappointed. We ordered Onion Rings, whitefish bites, burger and Whitefish Hoagie. All of them tasted great. Burger was huge and I wasn't able yo finish it all. Came on a Thursday late afternoon, the dining area was about half full. We got the Italian and a Buffalo Chicken Wrap. Service was quick and both items were tasty. Great choice if you want options that aren't fried in Saint Ignace. read more

We stopped there on our way to the Keewenaw for a quick lunch. The perch lunch was very good, and not expensive. Highly recommend.

Let me start by saying we passed this place up because the parking lot was full (normally a clue to a tasty joint)- I was really hungry. But after poor service at our first stop, we walked out and headed back to JO2. Hands of fate were on our side! Despite the full parking lot, there were plenty of available tables. The bar, however, was full and hopping. Locals in on the secret, I supposed. We were seated right away and received prompt, friendly service I ordered the CIA ribs and a Diet Coke . Andy ordered the Ecorse Edge burger and an Oatmeal Cream Pie beer. (He's no fancy boy when it comes to beer but the waitress suggested this to be a good dark. We'll call it OCP to keep it manly.). When the food arrived, I was surprised and delighted with my plate full of gorgeous caramelized ribs covered in yummy sauce. I meant to order the half slab but, hey, dinner for tomorrow too. You won't need a fork with these, folks. Fall off the bone goodness. And don't let the word habanero scare you. The spice was subtle but delicious. It was obvious as well that I wasn't just tasting sauce. The meat itself was packed with flavor. If you're still with me, let me fill you in on my husband's dinner choice, the Ecorse Edge. I'll preface it by saying he and his buddy spent three straight Summer's on a quest for the most epic burger before his friend died two years ago. They covered St Ignace to Petoskey. He knows burgers and has his definite favorite spots. He ordered another OCP when dinner arrived (so that was a win) and he preceded to dig in. The Ecorse is a burger with chili, cheddar and several onion rings on it. Sounds like slop to me but presentation was nice. Well, from his first bite the noise he was making as he consumed his dinner was akin to that scene from "When Harry Met Sally". I had to ask- Is it your new #1? With a groan and a head shake he stated "It's right up there". I pressed for more info asking what made it so good. He said "The meat. The chili. The cheese. The onion ring." More head shaking. A winning combo apparently. As we made our way to the car he exclaimed with pleasure "Who knew St Ignace had such culinary delights". Again, he's no fancy boy and doesn't normally talk like that. I've only written one other glowing review in my life over a restaurant. That was in Austin, Tx. So trust me when I say you've got to try this place! read more
