Hot Lobster - 100% lobster meat
Kari B.

Okay we honestly stumbled upon this place bc we planned to go to Lobster Landing after shopping at Marshall's and it was closed. So we said we'd try this place. Dare I say this was BETTER than lobster landing?! The lobster was tender and melted in your mouth and the roll was toasty and buttery just how I like it. Not one piece of lobster was chewy- it was absolutely delicious. I cannot WAIT to go back here, maybe try more next time. Oh and the coleslaw was also very good- I am picky and hate when it's too full of mayo or vinegar (or raisins, yuck) but this was crunchy and simply and a perfect little side to that delish lobster roll. What a not-so-hidden gem!

We stopped in the other day on our way to Cape Cod from NYC and there was a noticeable decline in the food taste. It is a normal stop for us to break up the long drive to Cape Cod from NYC with Johnny Ads. We were disappointed on our recent visit. Their clam chowder tasted more like potato chicken broth soup with bits of clam, and was served lukewarm/room temperature instead of hot. We arrived 15 minutes after they opened so this was not an issue of the chowder sitting around all day and cooling off. The warm lobster roll which we use to love, was not as packed with the lobster meat as it had in the past and the lobster meat was bland. It did not have a salty lobster taste, nor a butter taste. The clam fritters had more breading and dough than clams in them. The scallops roll was bland and wasn't enough to fill the roll it came on. Our food and soft drinks came to $120'ish for 3 adults and was a huge let down from the past lunches we have had at Johnny Ads. We had heard that it was not as good as before but still wanted to give it another try. Not sure if it's a kitchen issue and/or management issue.

Before heading to the beach, we stopped for a quick lunch at Johnny Ad's! There's something on the menu for everyone, and the staff was friendly at the window. The lobster roll was packed full, and all of the food was delicious. A nice casual spot that we would definitely return to!

Nice little Place...looks like from back in the 50s nice little place with a combination of food, Ice cream, you can sit out side and enjoyed the view. The food very basic Cheese Hamburger taste better then Burger King...fries were good, cold slaw was basic , the shake was fine very thick vanilla shake, the eating room nice like a museum . They can do better with the prices.

Chowder and whole clams

Small, dive clam shack with great counter service and fresh, hot clams, chowder and all the seafood favorites. Chowder has a lot of big potato chunks, a few pieces of clam strips, and good flavor. Whole clams are served piping hot. A drizzle of lemon and a sprinkle of pepper really set them off. A great stop, definitely worth the short drive off the Interstate.

Crinkle cut fries, no salt

Exactly what I was looking for! I'm sad I don't live around here, because it's a gorgeous area, but so happy that I experienced it one time. Had a hot lobster roll, yummy and a very good value in today's world, the crinkle cut french fries were delicious, the people are nice, they include things like napkins and forks and coleslaw and ketchup We could ask for anything more?

Side menu

Best seafood in Connecticut and second best in all of New England. The food is amazing and the service is excellent.

(Hot) Lobster rolls are my favorite food, and Johnny Ads delivered. My boyfriend and I literally only went in for a lobster roll and it was superb let me tell you. Perfectly crispy bread and a ton of lobster smothered in butter, the way a lobster roll should be! Eating this roll was an out of body experience and confirmed my love for them. Definitely recommend for a more casual place to grab some good seafood.

Place was clean and service was prompt. But the food just wasn't very good. It was hot but the fried outing was too much and over cooked.

I wish every person who buys fresh seafood, could truly know the story of Saybrook Seafood…read more It's a classic .......This place is owned by a woman from a family of fourth-generation, CT Shoreline fishwives...Fishwives, a term sometimes used as an insult...but when it comes to fresh seafood, is the highest compliment/assurance of quality and local knowledge. I don't know how many generations of fishing are represented in this family, but I do know that the quality and freshness of their fish reflect every generation... I'll make it simple.... -Saybrook Seafood knows every clammer, oysterman, fin fisherman, dragger, trawler, tuna hunter, long-liner and lobsterman from Clinton to Point Judith. -Atlantic seafood knows every wholesaler from here to the Fulton fish market. -Saybrook seafood chowder recipes have been honed for generations. I know because when I was a kid (I'm 65) the clam chowder I relished is still made exactly by Saybrook Seafood..right down to the perfect consistency of the potatoes, not too firm, not too mushy... -Atlantic seafood has a wide selection gathered from all over the fish world.. -Old saybrook seafood has a much smaller selection because, with very few exceptions, if it isn't available locally, it isn't in the case... -Sea scallops are from Day Boats.....Tuna is from Point Judith.... -hard calms are from local clammers -oysters are from third generation oyster farms, farmed to taste like oysters...not hybrid, cross-bred, designer-named lab-rats... -Steamers are from Maine -Stuffed shrimp is a simply-seasoned, perfectly-balanced, third-generation recipe that honors and enhances....without flavor-masking, the main player in the dish... -Herring is from an old local guy -smoked fish is from a different old local guy -Shad is from yet another old local guy -And most of these old local guys...are part of the family... Get the picture? In short Saybrook seafood is the tip of an iceberg....an iceberg of colorful local history....the watermen of CT and Rhode Island, who have made their living catching and digging and knowing local seafood for generations.... ..who still think marketing means foodshopping....and for whom quality, freshness and cleanliness are not a state requirement, or even good business, but a simple issue of family pride, and unbreakable commitment to honor family traditions that will never, never be forsaken....

Unfortunately, the woman helping my mom was incredibly rude even snapping at her several times when she asked a question or tried to move the butcher paper to see the weight of the fish on the scale. I am aware the store was very busy at the time my mom was in, but this is so incredibly unacceptable and I am disgusted that we just spent so much money after being treated that way rather than walking out. I tried to call the store several times today to voice my upset over the phone directly rather than leaving a poor review. No one has answered and there is no answering machine. We will no longer be customers at Saybrook Seafood.

We had the Scallop and Shrimp Bisque, Duck Confit Dumplings, Wafu Bolognese, Beef Wellington and Ribeye Steak. This is a dining experience where you don't need to review each course! Each one was excellent. We topped it off with an amazing piece of cheesecake. Visit The Essex because it will feel like a performance as much as a dining experience. We will be back....... We were looking forward to this place and sadly it was an excessively overpriced poorly cooked and…read moredownright awful meal. And please let me state again the bill was beyond excessively expensive. I do not in any way recommend eating here unless you want to waste your valuable money or have dirty stares from the unshaven, what appear to be drug addicts working in the kitchen one of them I assume was the owner. The guy if you read the comments from other diners is a supreme condescending scumbag when responding. Guess what guy, people don't like to be talked to that way especially when they have a legitimate grievance. Things didn't do well in the town of Essex so he thought he'd move to old saybrook and use the name Essex which is a true insult to the town having their name associated with this place in any way. Also that's not how you make pavlova, it was down right vile and we couldn't eat it. It literally is made with egg whites and sugar, one got the simplest things to make. For weeks now when I make something at home that's delicious and I wonder why they can't do the same on any level as a running joke now if something's really good I ask my girlfriend how much do you think the Essex would charge for this if they could even make it? Bones in the fish, salt in everything like it was cooked by the Roman army in 100bc. Truly terrible chowder. The only saving grace was the bartender making decent crazy priced drinks, but honestly how hard is it to mix odd syrups and liquor together. I'll answer that it's not. I have photos of anyone would be interested but don't have the patience to upload them, honestly what's the point. I eat at restaurants multiple days a week throughout CT and this was the biggest disappointment in my 46 year of life here and that says a lot considering the plethora of choices a dinner has around the state, but good bad or ugly not one of them will be as memorable as this place. Good lord Shameless the responses by the owner of this hole to customers airing real complaints about unacceptable food and near felony theft level pricing and shameful to feed people garbage, David Bouley this guy is not. I mean it was near $500 I've never wanted an apology or a full refund more in my entire life from any business. Lastly I was also a chef for many years and while I understand the vast majority of line cooks in CT are addicts, alcoholics or both bring them and having them making food in an open air kitchen for the world to see was a major fail on his part as well. I know people often like to say if I could give less than one star i would, I say it's time for this place to shut their doors, for old saybrook to send in the health dept knocking for a thorough inspection because I have a distinct feeling they would fail miserably and the town of Essex might consider filling a defamation suit as they would definitely have some standing. Just god awful, shameful
