We called in advance--on a Saturday night--to double check their hours and we were told they were open until 8. We arrived at 7:53 and were rudely told that they were closing early and we could not get ice cream. When I mentioned to the owner that we had called in advance, he rudely told me that he didn't care and wouldn't be serving us. I suppose it's his prerogative to close early, but he was unnecessarily nasty and completely unaccommodating. I won't be returning, there's no need to treat customers with disrespect. read more

It's a cute little ice cream stand on the beach that sells fried seafood and other grilled items for the prices that you would pay at a sit-down restaurant. All fried items were basically a thick layer of bread crumbs over a tiny substrate and very overcooked. Onion rings were inedible. If you went to the beach with the kids and forgot to pack food, it's a good option. Otherwise, there are plenty of other places in town. They get 2 stars for the view, (none for food quality), but lose 1 due to pressure to tip when paying by credit card. This is the same level of service as McDonald's - order at the counter, wait for them to call your number, pick up at the counter, buss your own table after you eat. Guess they are to good to let you know that you have to pay just to go in and park. Drove 1hr 20 minutes, only to be told, even if we were just going to eat we had to purchase a day pass, $10 for residents, $20 for non-residents. Would be nice to see that on their web page. Great for an early dinner after being at the beach all day. Pro tip: parking is free at 5pm, so if you're looking to save some money, go to one of the other free beaches before coming for the food. That being said, M&J is worth the visit. It's a cute, small on-the-beach restaurant with a handful of picnic tables under tropical umbrellas. The menu didn't have too many vegetarian options for my teen cousin, but she opted for a caesar salad, which was pretty large. Chicken tenders do the trick for my younger cousin - hard to mess up but still on point. The lobster rolls, while an awesome menu item to have, were good though not my favorite on the coast. They were a bit tiny for the price. That being said, I'd probably order them again! Lots of drink options, though they were out of the sparkling water I was hoping for. Went for ice cream with my nieces. One of them didn't like the blue lemonade so I encouraged her to politely ask if they would exchange it for something else. I was at the side of the restaurant while my niece did this at the front and I overheard the owner (white hair, white moustache) in the back(the side door was open) saying that my niece "was an idiot and he can't stand stupid people". I told him that he needs to watch how he speaks about customers, especially kids. He then walked out the door threateningly with a butcher knife in his hand and told me to "shut the hell up and mind my own business". He then slammed the door in my face. I told this to a few people who all said the man is crazy and he has mouthed off to kids before, even one time telling some kids to "go eat some sand." We decided to do something a little different for our 10th anniversary dinner, and went here for a beachside dinner. When we arrived around 7:15 PM, they were already beginning to close down for the night (there was only one other party dining there). The staff was super friendly and accommodating. They had already begun closing down the fryer, but they opened it back up for us when they heard we'd gone out of our way to celebrate our anniversary at their place. They continued this trend later by giving us a heads up before they shut down the soft serve machine, and even by getting me some extra ketchup when I ran out late in my meal. I can't compliment their smiling service highly enough. The cod in my fish and chips was more lightly breaded than I'm used to -- and it turned out to be a wonderful thing. Less breading = less grease = better flavor. The fries -- ahem, chips -- were pretty good. Portion size was perfect. I got a blue Slushee for dessert, but it was a bit flavorless. We had fun watching the ocean, and taught the gulls to sing on command with our spare fries :) Pros: * Stellar service -- above and beyond * Yummy fish & chips * That VIEW * Beach practically begs you to take a walk after your meal * Free entertainment (seagulls constantly maneuvering to get dibs on your leftovers) Cons: * A bit expensive, but then what beachfront food shack isn't? * They may close early on slow days, so arrive by 7 if you're having a late dinner * Seagulls will take your food if left unattended/poorly guarded * Cute but bold skunks live under the deck and emerge at dusk. Went about a month ago, we got a burger and chicken Caesar wrap between us, both of us were very happy, everything fresh and tasty. Went today and it was a totally different place. Got the same chicken Caesar wrap, also requested it with avocado. They obviously had a different chef on. The lettuce came out of the sandwich in long stringy strands, the whole sandwich fell apart, the chicken was in little crumbles, and the avocado was a guacamole spread, which is different than avocado! The other item we ordered was a hotdog, it came on at a stale role that fell apart, we did not understand why they hotdog was split length wise up the middle. The classic walk-up ordering windows are charming and harken back to a simpler time, but the checkout process is quick and modern (debit and credit cards accepted and you can select a tip amount on a screen). We had the By The Sea salad and a chicken salad sandwich. Both were well prepared and delivered at the right temperatures. Outdoor seating is available right along the beach and shoreline. A manager stopped by our table to make sure we were happy with our food (we were). Families with young children and teens were all around.
