I was skeptical about trying out this place based on all the negative reviews. But do not be fooled! This place is amazing. I went there last night and the food and service were both excellent. No it is not greasy diner food, but yes it is a healthy twist on classic diner favorites. I love eating things that are like old favorites but have a healthy interesting spin. I do not need my food loaded with grease to be satisfied like it seems most of the comments below do, but instead am easily satisfied with fresh ingredients, even local ones (Rao's Coffee was being served, awesome!). I got a tuna sandwich and it was delicious, it had a hard boiled egg on it and they also used a crushed olive type spread on the bread, yum!!!! If you care about your health and are trying to eat fresh delicious food you must try this place out! read more

Five bucks for a big bowl of steel cut oatmeal with fruit and made with milk. Seven bucks for two eggs, four pieces of toast made with legit thick-crust bread, two slices of thick bacon and a pile of tasty griddle potatoes. I was really impressed. I like diners. Last fall at Johnny's, I had the chicken pot pie twice, and it was excellent. This past Tuesday evening, I ordered chicken pot pie etc to take home...I was anticipating this great chicken pie. What a disappointment !! It looked different, but that is OK , it was a real pastry crust, however the inside was a huge disappointment. It was not chicken pot pie, it was poultry stuffing pot pie with a couple of pieces of dry chicken in it..virtually inedible. It was dry. There was a container of gravy which was mainly flour and water...flavorless. Thus the meal consisted of poultry stuffing pie, crust, mashed potatoes, and the squash which was cooked well. I have never heard of stuffing in a pot pie. That is the end of my ordering the pie. Had I eaten there, I would have sent it back. I know that this could be an aberration, however important to know that more care might need to be taken with this particular dish. You had a good thing going, changed it, and it bombed. I cannot not say enough in the way of compliments for the staff,,,,helpful, pleasant and professional. The diner is clean, bright.. In all fairness, I shall try a breakfast soon..(.my favorite meal to eat out) and see how that goes. read more

Let me begin by saying I'm born and raised in New Jersey, the home of real diners. My first comment upon reading Johnny's menu was, "this is not a diner menu". I would more accurately describe the offerings as a large cafe menu. Diner menus have something for everyone at reasonable prices. This place does not. Students hoping for large cheap burger platters heaped with fries are in for a real let down. No senior discount day or kids eat free night either. A diner has pages and pages of choices covering a diversity of options..mousaka to jello, PB&J sandwiches to prime rib. Diners are an American institution. Diners are neighborhood eateries. Johnny, have you never been to Jersey???? My impression is that the highly trained chef is trying to raise the quality of what she thinks is traditional diner food. The eggs I had were very good, the coffee was good and the bread (sourdough being the ONLY bread with this dish) was good. There are lots of places between Belchertown and Hadley where I can get good eggs, choices of fresh baked breads and good coffee. Why stop at Johnny's? As others noted, the service was very good. We don't need a new take on diner food. We need a real diner. read more

Terrible, terrible terrible! This is not a Diner. One page of dinner items & one page of breakfast items not served all day! So, all you have for dinner are a small amount of sandwiches & a small selection of dinners. I chose the turkey dinner.....3 small slices of white turkey with awful gravy, stale stuffing & decent mashed potatoes...no cranberry sauce! A big disappointment! The opening of this restaurant was something I had looked forward to for a long time. I am a big fan of Johnny's Tavern and I loved the route 9 diner so I figured this would be amazing. It was mediocre at best. I understand it is new and they're working out the kinks but after 2 meals I was unimpressed and unsatisfied. My first meal had been accompanied by a good beer and a pretty good entrée not to mention excellent service. The second (a 3pm lunch) again had some pretty good food but I have never experienced such horrendous service in my life. The restaurant was not busy, there were several servers but it still took our waitress a half hour just to take our order. Instead she sat in the booth next to us with two other waitresses gossiping about bad tips and customers she's had and received in the past. After our order had been placed it took another half hour for our food to arrive, appetizers and entrées simultaneously. After we had waited another half hour to pay, the waitress neglected to bring my change after paying in cash and pocketed it instead. All in all, I wish I could go back but even the slightest chance of getting that waitress scares me away from that place for good. The food is good, and I assume it could only get better as the cooking staff continues to master the menu, but keep in mind the fact that a quick lunch could easily become drawn out and agonizing. read more

Just finished dinner at Johnny's Roadside Diner. We had been there years ago, but not since it changed hands. We were both VERY pleasantly surprised! I ordered the baked cod, not without trepidation because I am very particular about my fish. A generous portion arrived perfectly cooked with just the right amount of butter, accompanied by fresh zucchini, seasoned rice, (both delicious) and a dinner roll. My companion ordered the turkey dinner, which was just like Thanksgiving, moist with mashed potatoes covered in gravy, the same zucchini as that which came with the fish, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and a dinner roll. The only minus was that the dinner rolls were dry and seemed like they could have been fresher. A huge $5 glass of a quite acceptable Cabernet Sauvignon and a $4 bottle of Bud Light rounded out what turned out to be a very nice meal. Plus, if you qualify, there is a 20% discount for seniors on Monday-Thursday after 3PM. Please patronize this restaurant!!! There were few diners, and we really would like to return to try more of the menu selections! read more

I couldn't help but immediately compare Jonny's with the former Rt. 9 dinner, and unfortunately, it really falls short with regard to the portion sizes, pricing, menu choices, food quality, and hours of operation as previous reviewers have noted. Wait time was long, maybe attributable to our waitress who seemed to be training on the job. No biggie. (After she cleared our appetizer plate of Poutine, which was acceptable but small portion, she said "ok great, I'll put your order in...) Really? She hadn't put our lunch order in the computer yet. *sigh* So, my friend was on her lunch hour, and with about 10 minutes left in the hour, we had our food. I got the roast beef on kaiser roll thingy, and my GF got the corn dog whatever-it-was. Mine was good, hers was ok --but no real reason to return for the food. Soda was just weird, the unsweetened ice tea was nonexistent, the lemonade was very bad, very much too sweet. Oh yeah, when we were looking at the menu, I saw they had a turkey club (you know, the triple decker with bacon?). I asked the waitress if they also made a hamburger club. A very friendly manager-looking older guy came over and we discussed the matter for a little while. He didn't seem to know what a "club" sandwich was, but said he could put together anything I wanted. I decided I really didn't know what I wanted and went with the roast beef on Kaiser roll, which I could have sworn was supposed to come with a dipping jus. Finally, the food is over-priced. Our tab came to over $40 for two meals with tip. Far too expensive for what we ordered. Ok, so maybe it's not fair to compare Johnny's Diner with the the previous diner, and try to weigh it on it's own merits, and consider that they just opened, and their staff are still training, and the food situation is still being worked out. I'll try again, maybe, at some point in the future. After all, the waitress did say they would be expanding the hours of operation and the menu over time. But we couldn't help but joke and say that the food took so long it could have been delivered from Johnny's Tavern in downtown Amherst -- a place at which we had a terrible, terrible dining experience. read more

This is somehow even worse than route 9 diner was. The food is average and the service is absolutely horrible. The waitress never asked how we were doing and forgot to put our drink orders in. Everything took forever and it definitely wasn't worth the wait. The Bloody Mary's are the only reason I will consider coming back. read more

The diner is currently in its opening week and it definitely shows. However this does not excuse them from serving cold biscuits and a cold cinnamon bun for dessert. I was a fan of the old diner and loved their all day breakfast, sadly that does not exist here yet but I heard they will eventually implement it once the chefs can deal with it. The wait staff was nice and friendly and helped out whenever they could. I had no problems with the staff and at one point I believe the owner came out and greeted us and was very friendly and made us feel welcome. She did try to convince us that serious renovations had taken place when clearly only a few colors of the interior walls had changed and the tile and carpet were a different color than before. As others have stated, gone are the old giant menus as they have been replaced with a single double-sided page menu, one whole page devoted to breakfast and some small dessert treats. We ordered the poutine for our appetizer and this was by far the best thing we ate all night. The gravy was clearly homemade and while they used string fries (poutine usually is made with thicker fries) it was very delicious. For entrees two of us had the Fried Chicken Platter, one had a fried chicken sandwich, and the other had the Chicken Pot Pie. The Platter came with a relatively small piece of fried chicken, a scoop of mac n cheese, and a biscuit. The chicken was extremely moist and juicy however the batter was bland and there was no flavor present. The mac n cheese was actually kind of amazing; it wasn't too thick and the flavors were great, I only wish I had more. The biscuit came out cold as if they had not even attempted to put it in the oven. Also the biscuit was not flaky at all and instead had a cakey texture. The fried chicken sandwich was good but then again it is hard to mess up a sandwich like that. The fries that were served with it were very good. Lastly, the pot pie was pretty decent but again lacked a lot of flavor. The puff pastry on top was nice and flaky and did have good flavor. The entrees overall were underwhelming to say the least. Lastly, we ordered some dessert: a piece of cheesecake and funfetti cake (their cake of the day) and a cinnamon bun. The cheesecake was typical and tasted pretty good, nothing out of the ordinary. The funfetti cake was good nothing special really, but the texture was pretty much spot on. Then we had the cinnamon bun; they did not think to heat it up before serving it and it arrived cold and we all looked at each other and did not know what to say. We did ask them to heat it up and they "zapped" it in a microwave presumably. Overall our experience was not what we were expecting but I do understand that restaurants sometimes take time to get "in the groove" but some mishaps that I have stated I do not think are excusable. That being said, I am definitely willing to give the diner another try, likely for breakfast next time. read more

Excellent. Went for breakfast today. Loved the decor, seating was so comfortable, hung out coats, loved the colors of the table and surround, loves the photos. Wished the landscaping outside was just raked level as we walked in past it. Totally competent waitstaff. Ate: huevos rancheros, done the new way, black beans excellent (made from scratch or from a can; if a can want to know which brand), eggs perfect, delish, pulled out the corn tortillas from the bottom cuz couldn't cut them with a fork (and didn't expect to). Just missing my California Mexican food. Great answer to that. Companion had fruit and yogurt, like and perfect, and then the beignets in powered sugar in a brown paper bag, perfectly done (that's what Kim went to New Orelans to eat when she was pregnant). So, eager to go back. Would love to see a paper menu with jook for the Chinese breakfast since you can't get Chinese breakfast anywhere in the area - and bring out the owner's Chinese cooking skills too. read more

We ate dinner. Short menu compared to what most would associate with a diner. OK so it just opened 2 weeks ago we will give some slack. Wait person was pleasant and efficient. Nachos were good. Wife ordered shrimp with cheesy grits. Too spicy to eat .... she mentioned to server but got just an apology. But really it was inedible. My fish and chips and slaw was good but pricy for the quantity. Overall they need to get a handle on what people expect from a diner. The menu was a weird mix of fish dishes, burgers and sandwiches. Value low. Remember the previous owners menu was huge and large selection of diner food. This is what folks expect from a diner. Comfort food and lots of it. Well try breakfast in a while to see how that is. Plenty of room to improve and we know owner has a good track record. read more

Took my wife and kids to the diner for breakfast. Service was excellent, and the food was great. Wife and daughter had eggs benedict, which they both thought was delicious. The home fries didn't look appealing, but they made up for their looks by tasting awesome! I had Irish eggs Benedict which was also delicious. My son had the crispy corn beef and he raved about it. I have been here many times since it has opened and I have to say the most disappointing part is the inconsistency sometimes it's pretty good and other times it's pretty bad. I have been served home fries that were cooked and cut 4 different ways 2 of which were good but the other two were bland and not great. My friend got some really good breakfast sausage the first time we went so I ordered it the next time we went for myself and it didn't even look the same and tasted like the frozen links you can buy I was very disappointed. Some of the menu options are good but I still wish there was more variety especially since the old route 9 diner had a menu 5x the size. read more

I had a truly fabulous experience here last week! Our server, Emily, was attentive, friendly, and more than happy to put up with our requests. We ordered "Benedict fries", which had been on the specials menu a few weeks prior, and were able to get them no problem (they should be put on the permanent menu for sure!!!). I went to this diner on a Saturday night on the late side of dinner looking for snack and a quiet place to sit (more like a café, but Johnny's was there at the right time!). When we walked in, there was a distinct smell. I got used to it quickly enough, but it was odd. There weren't many people in the restaurant and it was quiet, which I appreciated! We received a friendly greeting and were seated right away. I got a grilled cheese and fries, which was $8 or so, and what was essentially a grown-up Shirley Temple. My partner got a milkshake, chicken fingers and fries. They didn't have a regular order of chicken fingers, so the waitress recommended she get 2 orders off the kids' menu. The service was good, but the food was mediocre (with the exception of the fries). I felt like I could have made a better grilled cheese at home. The chicken fingers were dry. read more

Being an insider in the industry, I only feel obligated to post a review if I know something about the people who cook the actual food available on the menu. I feel more comfortable recommending a place if I know that somebody in the building cares about the food above all else, that being said, I highly recommend this restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and even dinner. The menu is classic diner food, but just like the other "Johnny's" establishments, the food tastes far better than anything you'll find in the area with similar menu options. The Irish eggs Benedict is possibly the only meal you'll need to eat for the rest of the day, the corned beef hash is exceptional, it's clearly made in house and is served over freshly baked biscuits and topped with the usual poached eggs and hollandaise. The home fries that accompany most of the breakfast items were big, bold, and surprisingly awesome. The pancakes are huge and topped with fresh strawberries and blueberries. Everything that arrives at the table is bigger and better than you would expect, the chef at Johnny's diner clearly has high standards and can execute. I wasn't expecting to say this about another "Johnny's" menu, but once again, they're setting the standard for diner's and breakfast joints in the valley. If you are passing through, I recommend stopping at the roadside diner. read more

I will start this off by saying that I did not eat dinner on the night I am writing about. I Have eaten there before and have this to say about the food. Its only OK. They have a vast menu, exciting menu items, but the prices are steep, and the quality doesn't come close to reaching the price point. The wait staff was polite, but I'm posting this review regarding how the management handled a situation. I am aware that the restaurant was within its bounds in this situation, So this is for your consideration only. My Wife Suffers from PTSD and other mental health issues, part of her treatment involves her therapy cat, whom she's keeps with her to help her cope with her issues. So she had the cat sitting quietly next to her in its container. The head server came by and asked if the cat was a service animal and to see its documentation. My wife explained it was her therapy animal and produced the letter from her doctor documenting her need for the animal. The head server then turned into the kitchen and got the manager. At this point half the restaurant is staring at us, which starting to trigger my wife's anxiety. The manager told us that they did not allow therapy animals only service animals. The manager permitted her to have the cat, but told us that she couldn't bring it with her in the future. At this point my wife was so embarrassed that she wanted us to leave immediately and I could tell that she was about to have an anxiety attack. Just then a couple came in with a dog wearing a generic red vest, management didn't even ask to see anything from them. Ultimately I had to leave the restaurant with my wife. I'm just asking that the management be more sensitive when handling situations with customers, the entire restaurant need not be made aware of the situation. Mental disabilities are no less crippling than physical ones, so please treat both with the same levels of consideration. read more

We heard the new place was good. That was a lie. She ordered a salad with no cheese or croutons, and when it came out it had both. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich. lettuce was literally crunchy, they used pickle ends and no actual pickles, and the chicken was terrible quality, as well as not thoroughly cooked. I believe the sandwich had been sitting under a heat lamp for a WHILE. Water tasted funny too. The woman at the table over from us was literally crying when we left, after hearing her complain about a few things with their meal as well, we overheard that the beef product she was eating also contained pork, which is something she does not eat. This was apparently not disclosed to her before ordering it. There is no way I will return here and I would encourage y'all to go somewhere else as well. Also the first time in my life I have ever not tipped ANYTHING, it took 25 minutes to get our food and another 10 for the check. read more

worst meal I have ever had. asked for my burger "not pink" and was served a raw burger. Husband also asked for no pink... and his was almost as pink as mine. The waitress was nice about taking mine back and removing it from the check...I did not have it redone or order anything else, just let my husband finish eating around his pink meat. Don't walk into Johnny's expecting the old Route 9. The new Johnny's Roadside has a very different take on a diner, almost with a cafe feel. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. The menu is smaller than the old Route 9 but that shouldn't deter you from going because the food is excellent. The menu is inventive and will make you do a double take on 'diner food'. It surpassed my expectations for such a young restaurant. read more

Just went to eat there today for breakfast. Service is great and friendly. In regards to the food, they definitely overdo it on the cooking oil and the home fries taste better at iHop than they do here. They had a rubbery texture when you bite into them and the banana pancakes tasted "fake" meaning they just use a cheap pancake mix and just as well overdo it on the oil. At least that's what it tasted as. Omelets are very cheesy for those cheese lovers. read more

Simply the worst food I have ever eaten in the Pioneer Valley. They served ricotta cheese as cheese curds. they served cubes of toast as stuffing. they served a cup of raspberry jam as cranberry sauce. I mentioned to the waitress it was a cup of raspberry jam and she just shrugged. The turkey was slabs of dried gobbler browned to jerky style consistency on a grill. Who grills the meat in an open face turkey sandwich?!? It was like the menu was supervised by someone who had never cooked for people before. Top it all off with the world's saltiest gravy and no name offbrand soda. And it was expensive. Places like this are the reason we have chain restaurants. People go there for fear of ending up at a garbage restaurant like the roadside. I saw the table next to me get a burger with a thumbprint in the bun. My girlfriend got chicken fried cube steak with country gravy. It wasn't cube steak, had the wrong gravy and tasted like microwaved liver. Did I mention we could have had dinner at Mulino's for the price of an app and two entrees at this nightmare restaurant? Stay far far away. read more

Gave this place a second shot today. First time I went was a couple days after they opened, the food was decent but the service was disappointing; they took our order fast, but then it was 45 minutes to get huevos rancheros and a turkey sandwich, and after the waitress asked if we wanted our check it took her 15 minutes to bring it. Today, went at 12pm when you'd think it would be pretty busy but it was only half full; should have been our first sign that things hadn't improved. We were a party of four and the woman was quick about getting our drink orders but after asking for a couple more minutes with the menu, she didn't come back for like 15. we ordered very simple fare: waffles with chocolate chips, a scrambled egg, an egg burrito, a bagel, yogurt with fruit, and French toast. the food came out fairly fast, unfortunately with quite a few items missing: waffle had no chocolate chips; fruit but no yogurt, and when my friend reminded her she asked if she still wanted it (um, what?!); and no scrambled egg. When I reminded her about the egg she said they were making it right now...20 minutes later she came out with it, either the waitress was lying or they had to restart the scrambling process quite a few times. Normally I'm willing to put up with bad service if it's going to be good food, but it wasn't anything spectacular enough to want to go through this again. and to top it off we waited over ten minutes after eating our meal for her to bother to come over and ask if we were ready for our check; to be honest she spent more time hanging out in the kitchen than she did checking on the very few tables she was covering. It's a shame, because the family that owns the place has some very good restaurants, but for some reason they just haven't been able to get this one right. read more
