So I was really excited to try Johnny's as a regular patron of Route 9 Diner. As they have no website or social media account, I had no idea when they opened or what their phone number was to call and ask for their hours once I figured out they were open. Anyway, I went with 3 friends this evening and it was just....food.
We ordered poutine as an appetizer which was honestly stunning - 6/5 stars for the poutine alone it could really rival Montreal poutine. The gravy was clearly house made, and the shoestring fries were delicious and still crunchy even when doused in gravy. Seriously could not get enough of those cheese curds and gravy. Best thing on their dinner menu for sure, I will go back just for that!
For dinner I ordered the chicken pot pie, which was a large, but not too deep, plate of the pot pie filling with a loose circle of pastry dough on top. The dough was good and flaky, not a lot of flavor in that or the filling. But it was fatty and warm and edible so I ate the whole thing. Definitely had worse, definitely had better. It was fine and I was cold.
My friends ordered the fried chicken plate which comes with a piece of fried chicken, mac and cheese, and a biscuit. I almost ordered that, but I'm glad I didn't. The mac and cheese was really very good, obviously fresh and homemade. I wish I could get the recipe to make it for myself! The chicken and the biscuit, my two favorite food items in general, were a sad disappointment. The chicken was juicy, but the batter! Not a drop of flavor in that chicken. Would not be surprised if there was not even salt. Bland and sad. The biscuit was worse, nothing like a biscuit should be. These biscuits were hard, cold, and cake-y. They were much too bread-like for my taste. We asked for them to be reheated, because they came out cold, and they microwaved them for us (we thought they probably should have brought out fresh ones for us but not that big of a deal) Even heated, they were still sad biscuits. It was just not good dough, I honestly cannot imagine I would enjoy them fresh either. The other thing about their plates was that it was quite pricey for a smaller portion. We both paid a similar amount for our entrees, but i received significantly more food than them. They probably should have gotten a more generous serving of mac, can't imagine they would want more chicken.
We had to have dessert, so we ordered a cheesecake, the funfetti cake, and a cinnamon bun. The cheesecake was excellent and the cake and the strawberry sauce were both clearly homemade and delicious. The cheesecake was creamy and sweetened perfectly. It was a fantastic recipe and I will likely have it again if I return. The funfetti cake was alright, probably would have been better if I had eaten it fresh. Probably had been sitting out a day or so. The cinnamon bun, unfortunately, came out similar to the biscuits. The glaze had hardened and so had the rest of it. It was brick like, but nothing the microwave could not fix. This time the microwave worked it's magic and their cinnamon bun, when warm, was excellent. Honestly did not even need the glaze, so I hardly noticed how little was on there.
The best part of our experience was the service we got. It was clear they had only been open a few days because the staff was slightly frazzled but I'll be damned if they weren't doing their best. Our server, Mike (I think) joked with us and was honestly so chill it was like we were all hanging out as friends. We were also approached by who I believe was management while we were eating our poutine. She asked what we thought of the new decor....honestly hasn't changed enough for us to notice. She claimed it felt 'warmer'? It didn't. It feels the same. She was nice, if slightly optimistically delusional.
It wasn't the worst diner experience, I wish they had coke or pepsi products instead of weird knockoffs, but I've had better. One of those better experiences was at Route 9. Johnny's has potential, but they had big shoes to fill as far as flavor goes and have, as of now, fallen short.
BIG PERK: they have booze! cheap booze, but booze nonetheless.
TLDR; if you want chicken and biscuits, go to Popeyes. read more
