I grew up coming here with my family and if I'm getting Chinese food this is the first and only choice for me to this day. We decided to try this place as our forever favorite and go to Chinese place, The oriental is closed this month. I gotta say my expectations were somewhat low as vegetarians we can be pretty picky. We ordered general tso tofu, sweet sour tofu and a mixed veggie. The tofu was amazing! Loved their sauces!! Cant say enough about the general tso sauce! It was very different from other tso sauces, but was incredibly delicious!! The portions were HUGE which is always awesome for lunch the next day. The price for the quality and amount of food was truly fantastic!! The veggies were also super yummy and fresh. Maybe a small tad overcooked as I enjoy my veggies very crunchy but still very tasty!!! I ordered the General Tao's chicken to go. It's my go to Chinese dish. I subbed fried rice instead of white rice. The fried rice was so good!! Just right. I also thought the General tao's chicken was super good. I think I paid $7.75 for the lunch portion. Excellent portion for lunch! I was left full and satisfied. I eat at this place practically weekly. The menu is basic but extensive. There's a great variety to choose from. I usually prefer steamed rice but their pork fried rice is impressive. They do beef well, not overcooked. Chicken is also very nicely done. My favorites are Broccoli beef, garlic chicken, and Kung pao chicken. The service is very good as well. We are happy to find a real Chinese restaurant with combination choices on the menu plus many more entrees. We had chop suey plus deep fried shrimp and barbecued pork. Best Chinese in the Salem/Keizer area despite the name and being located in a small strip mall type building. We've been coming here for a few years. Food is always good and the servings huge. We get a box to take home leftovers for a second meal. My go-to is the lunch combination C with fried shrimp, sweet and sour chicken and chicken subgum chow mein. So good! Service can be spotty. There have been times where they drop off the food and don't return until they bring the bill, ignoring empty water glasses or empty dishes that could be removed. Soup sometimes isn't hot enough. We phoned in and picked up at the drive thru for the first time this week since seating is closed due to the virus situation. That went well, with our food being ready at the time promised. Excellent Chinese food. We called in ahead of time to do the drive-thru option, which is convenient. But be aware, there is a little bit of a language barrier. The menu lists only one price for each item, but I was asked if I wanted a large or small order of each item. We opted for the large order of each. General Tsao's Chicken, Sweet & Sour Chicken, and beef fried rice, along with a barbecue pork appetizer. When I rolled up, the order didn't seem to be ready. I waited a little bit, but when the young lady returned with my credit card, she also had my order, and everything was hot. So I was okay with that. First off, it was A LOT of food. I was a little stunned by the price (over 30 bucks for two of us), but mostly that was because we ordered the large option and they included so much. The sweet and sour chicken was served as it is most places; the chicken was cut into nuggets and deep fried, with sweet & sour sauce served on the side. Only this time, it seemed like the chicken was hand-breaded. It was super flaky and incredibly delicious. The sauce was a little sweeter than I would have liked, but was very tasty. The beef fried rice was a disappointment. They put in a TON of bean sprouts. It turned what I was looking forward to (a soft, moist, rice dish) into a crispy chore of a meal. I ended up not eating it. I imagine it would have been good, but I have never seen bean sprouts in fried rice before. Ever. And didn't expect it here. Oh well. The General Tsao's chicken was good, and the white rice was decent. All in all, a great place to go. Except for that hiccup in the fried rice, I'd have given it five stars. * Worst Restaurant I Know of -- locally, it's "John's Chinese Restaurant", in nearby Kaiser, Oregon. The good point is that it offers take-out and a drive-up window. Call, place your order, drive up, pay, go home, and eat. The bad part is when you eat.|| The food is horrible! PLASTIC FORK BITS ALA CHINOISE -- Once I opened my take-out box and found broken pieces of plastic mixed into the sauce; looked like tines off of a plastic fork -- one of those see-through kinds. I had to pick the pieces of plastic out and then wonder whether to eat the food. GUT-WRENCHNG EGG ROLLS -- The egg rolls were filled with bright green cabbage. Cabbage. Cooked enough to turn it bright green. But just cabbage. No onions, carrots or any other vegetables. No shrimp, chicken, or any other proteins. No sauces. No seasonings. Just cabbage rolled up in a wrapper and deep fried long enough to turn the cabbage green. SHOCKING MOO-SHU PORK -- The filling consisted of vegetable slices with slices of Chinese BBQ Pork. BBQ Pork? That's not Moo Shu Pork! If you don't know what the dish is supposed to contain, don't put it on your menu! RAW GINGER CHICKEN -- Not a lovely dish when the ginger is not cooked. This is just a melange of cooked chicken slices mixed with raw ginger slices and a pre-made chicken-stock sauce. No cooking on the ginger. Just plop, plop, plop. ALIEN MA-BO TOFU -- Some chopped vegetables and sauce mixed with Chinese BBQ pork. That doesn't belong in Mapo Tofu! What happened to the ground pork? Terrible taste. If you don't know what the dish is supposed to contain, don't put it on your menu! SHARP-CORNERED GENERAL TSO'S CHICKEN -- One take-out container had sauce in the bottom, and pre-friend chicken nuggets on top. They weren't even mixed together. Another take-out order had pre-fried chicken cubes covered with sauce. But the chicken cubes were dry, tough, compact -- some kind of processed meat, covered in too much breading, and retaining their sharp corners. It was *horrible!*. MUSHROOM TOFU -- You can hardly go wrong if you make a thickened chicken sauce and fill it with raw sliced button mushrooms and squares of firm tofu. Except this restaurant ruined even that. The sauce was made with bullion, not chicken broth. And it was runny. The drive-up service used one of those cardboard containers, which allowed the runny sauce to flow through and drench whoever was unlucky enough to have to hold the container. On another trip, our request for a plastic soup container was refused, but the cardboard container was place into a plastic bag. By the time we arrived home, after a 10-minute drive, the sauce had leaked out into the flimsy bag. It was a horrible mess. SERVICE: Do not expect Americanized service. This is my son's favorite place to eat (and he's only 4). Personally I wouldn't say that it's the best place in Salem/Keizer to find Chinese food, but it is still very good. Regardless we still eat there frequently and enjoy the food and service. It's located in a small strip mall with limited parking but it does have an additional parking lot in the back, just a short walk from the entrance. Overall it's good. They have some of the best crab puffs I have every had. Lo mein was tasty. We prefer the thicker noodles like soba. Johns were spaghetti type noodles, but again tasty. We ate our lunch there today. When ready to box our leftovers found a long hair on my plate. We showed the waitress and she said there was long hair in the kitchen. As we got up from the table she brought me a box with what had the hair in it. So we heat the left overs and they did not taste the same as what we had in the restaurant. One thing I had saved all my sweet-n-sour sauce to take home and did not get any of that . Until this time the food has always been good. In the three times I've ordered there I was treated quite badly by the cashier and now I feel I shouldn't go back despite the high quality. She's downright nasty if you say nothing, but gets even worse if you ask for chopsticks or extra napkins.
