I drove up to Salem not long ago to have lunch with my Mom. We decided on Thai, as it's one of our favorites. I only know of a place in South Salem that I like, besides my go to's in Eugene. We looked on Yelp, and decided on this place because they had decent reviews, and were pretty close to Mom. I ordered the drunken noodles, she ordered phad Thai, both with chicken, and we had an appetizer of chicken sate. The chicken sate was good, I thought the drunken noodles were just alright. Mom liked hers, and she liked mine even better. She isn't used to really good Thai food like I am, I am spoiled in that way. In fact I had to go get our to go boxes, and go up to get our check to pay. Our waitress was no where! It was a man. My Mom was a waitress for most of her working life, in fact retired from it not long ago. Even she was disappointed, and she hates complaining, knowing the service industry. Great food! Everyone in my party commented on the freshness and deliciousness of their dish. However, I've been twice recently and the service is slow, very slow. Also, I've noticed that they don't always make food spicy. A member of my party ordered Spicy Basil Fried Rice at medium spice, and it wasn't spicy at all. This happened recently with an Orange Chicken too. Tonight was my first time dining at Sandee Thai. *The parking is in the rear, and limited, but that's okay since the restaurant itself is quite small. *There isn't much in the way of ambience but the dining room is clean and tidy. *Our server wasn't overly friendly but she was efficient. *The food was pleasing to the eye and very tasty! I started with some of the lettuce wrap appetizer and loved the sauce they have to drizzle over the chopped chicken and onions. Shrimp Pad Thai was my main course and it was perfect. I have MSG allergies, so I'm always cautious when I dine at Thai, Chinese, etc. establishments. Needless to say, I didn't have any reactions. Service when I went was really slow. We were the first ones in, maybe they were still getting things set up? Anyway the food was a mixed bag. Spring rolls were very good. We've eaten at Sandee Thai in Silverton, but stopped in at the Keizer location for dinner one night. My partner is Celiac's, so it's important for her to eat gluten free without risk of contamination, and we know that the staff at Sandee Thai have always taken that very seriously. My partner went for the avocado curry, which was a green coconut curry with bell peppers, peas, carrots, avocado, and basil over rice. My partner usually gets very spicy, but this time wanted something more mild and opted for a three star heat level. I opted for a noodle dish, selecting the Pad See Ew, which had noodles with eggs, carrots, broccoli, and I added beef to it. It's all in a dark sauce, which I asked for in five star heat. The food came out quickly and was very fresh. My noodles were very hot, both in temperature and in spice level, and there was plenty of beef, which was seasoned very well. The broccoli was largely chopped, which meant a lot of hot sauce would get caught up in the florets, making for a very spicy bite, but generally that's how vegetables are served in the Thai restaurants I've eaten at. I was disappointed that this location served soda in cans. For a hefty upcharge. It may be a personal thing, but I will never give a five star review to a restaurant that charges for soda refills, at an exorbitant price. The food was good, hot, and fresh, and I would definitely recommend it, but I would probably next time do a take out and provide my own drinks. read more
