The garage door suddenly stopped working. It was beeping as if there were something in the path of its opening but it wouldn't open. A rep from John's came out the day we called. He opened up the unit on the ceiling, cleaned it out and then told us it needed to be replaced. I hit the on switch just to be sure it still didn't work and it worked fine. I went in the house and my husband stayed out to pay for the service call. The guy charged him $500.00 and suggested a $50 tip because he'd come the day of the call. My husband paid him $550 for 20 minutes of his time, no parts, no expense on his part. I was arranging a broken spring repair near midnight, because I just got back late from helping my tenant get her car out of the garage and she really didn't want to leave her car parked outside too much. She's a great tenant so I was trying to arrange something for the following day. I wrote John, and he wrote back within a couple of minutes, I really didn't expect anyone to be checking their messages at midnight! Anyhow, I asked if he could do a spring repair the following day, but after hours since my tenant works all day and wouldn't get home until past 6pm. No problem for John! He quoted me a reasonable price and was happy to handle all the scheduling directly with my tenant, making it easier on myself. So come installation day, and John actually gets the job done way earlier than expected (after arranging his visit with my tenant), super quick work! And here comes the kicker.... I accidentally overpaid John because I'm a big dummy and didn't count my cash before handing it over (I was in a rush when I counted at home and mis-counted). John calls me after we had already drove off and told me I had overpaid. You get what you pay for. After the door was installed but not working properly, John made 4 follow up visits and then gave up. So I paid $331 to another company to get the door to close every time. Why the 3-star review? Even with the $331, the complete job cost was under the other 4 bids I received for the original installation. He was also the only contractor to bring samples of garage doors. My take away, only pay 90% of the bid price until the door works fine for at least a week, as is expected in construction. read more

On Monday morning our garage door made some crazy noises and one of the sides got hung up and came off the track. I called John's Garage Doors first becouse of the good reviews and being locally owned. I called and requested a service call for Wednesday gave a brief description of what the problem was and within 2 minutes an appointment was setup. Received a call from John saying he was running a little late and would arrive in about 20 minutes, was very apologetic even after I said no problem and that I appreciated the call. When John arrived he apologized once again and got straight to work. He pointed out the immediate issue gave a reasonable rate to fix it and got right on it. He explained what he was doing during the repair. Once the repair was done, he adjusted the door and lubed up the wheels and hinges and the door was working smoothly once again. He did point out that the spring on the door was the wrong size and could cause access wear on the opener. He did not try to up sell me on any parts or services, I was the one that asked for some prices for future reference. John answered my call on a Saturday morning and was at my house within an hour to complete an assessment (COVID-safe too if I may add). He suggested a complete replacement, but did offer to repair the damaged unit based on his assessment. Since the unit was over 15 years old, I decided to replace it entirely. I told John that I wanted to get some other estimates so that I could make an informed decision. He provided me with a model number of the unit he would install and an "out-the-door" quote, adding that he would be willing to match the best quote I could get.
