Walked-in on a Saturday morning, told them I need a general check up because my maintenance light came on, and to rotate tires and check/change oil. As a young, apparently naive looking female -- auto shops are my worst nightmare. They try to upsell me on everything, tell me my brakes are going to go out any minute, etc. Thankfully, I found John's and will never go anywhere else. I was never once pitched any extra parts I've never heard of, the staff was kind, quick, and courteous. After having my oil changed I happened to look over the invoice because I saw that they didn't put a new sticker on my windshield for the next oil change and saw that they claimed to have washed the outside windows, vacuumed the interior, and checked the windshield wiper blades. All where marked completed on the invoice and none where actually done. So I took my truck back and pointed out that after all that was said to be completed which wasn't, I couldn't help but to wonder if the oil was changed at all... They said it was and put a sticker on my windshield. Brought my truck in because the A/C wasn't blowing as cold as it should. I was greeted out front by a mechanic and they brought the truck around back and got to work right away. While waiting, I was able to speak to a service tech about the work they were doing with my truck. Every interaction we had throughout the service was informative and pleasant. Less than two hours later they returned my truck to me with ice cold A/C and a power steering system flush (which I had separately requested). They charged me only for the exact amount of time they spent working on the A/C and a flat rate for the power steering flush, which we had previously agreed upon. There were no trumped up charges for materials, shop fees, etc. I'll be returning to this shop if I need further service. read more

This is what I think about their 15 point oil change service: Pros: *It's quick. *They top-up the coolant as well as the wind shield washer reservoirs. *They vacuum the interior! This place is everything I hoped it would be when I came in for an oil change. It's a local, family-run business, and they have great customer service. I got there and they weren't too busy, I was greeted when I walked in and I gave the receptionist (who's also the mother of the family) my keys immediately and they took my SUV. 20ish minutes later one of the sons came in and rang me up. The price was exactly what I was quoted on the phone, and he didn't try to sell me anything extra or tell me anything else was wrong with my truck. I've been to John's many times over the years for oil changes and they get me in and out in less than 30 minutes everytime, many times less than 10 minutes. They even allow me to bring my own oil which is something very few other places will allow. This is our third time coming here for an oil change. They're quick, honest and won't ever try to sell you anything you don't need. We ran into this place by reading all of the great reviews on yelp and decided to try it. It beats the last place we were used to going to get our oil changes, by miles! Being female, I always worry when I walk into auto shops; whether it be just a simple oil change or something more challenging, like replacing a gasket. Luckily, all of my worries are out the door as soon as I walk into this place of business. I think they also give you a ride home, if your vehicle needs to stay there a day or two for repairs. We haven't needed anything major done to our cars yet (crosses fingers!) so we can't comment on those specifically. Chose this place even though it's a bit farther out from me based on the enormously popular reviews and it's easy to see why. 7:30am on a Saturday and their waiting room was already full and yet they got my oil changed in under 20 minutes. Their hours are great and prices are super competitive. It's a family run business and from the moment you step out of your vehicle you can tell. The employees are super friendly and hardworking. Every one of them greeted me kindly and was happy to get to work on my car and get me home (had just come off my night shift). I moved to Houston a year ago and have gone to several places to get an oil change but this is the spot I'll be going to from now on! I came in during lunch time and there were about 7 people ahead of me and I kid you not I got out in 20 minutes!!! These people do honest work and don't milk it when it comes to female customers. I will definitely be coming here from now on. A few weeks ago, I was having car troubles. Firestone said there was nothing wrong. I didn't trust it so I brought it to a different location and they told me it was potentially the battery. That didn't sit right with my as I had purchased a new battery less than a year ago...from them. I decided to bring it to John's. Right off the bat they told me it was my alternator. That made a lot more sense. I was able to work out a very reasonable price to get it replaced, and it was ready very shortly after. A few months later, I brought it in for an inspection and it was done in less than ten minutes! The staff is very friendly, and I don't feel like I'm getting ripped off like I do at other places. Inspection only nothing else! I've taken my car here a few time for oil changes and to fix a issue with vibration in my steering when I break at high speeds. I was told it was breaks so I got the breaks replaced. A few weeks later the same issue returned. I was traveling out of the country so I said when I return I will have it addressed. I took it back to get another oil change and to fix a oil leak that started after my last oil change not sure what that was about but I mentioned that I'm still having the same vibration issue so immediately they said it sounds like breaks I said you guys just changed my breaks less that 2 months ago. They said they would look into it. Had my vehicle for a few days they fixed the oil leak and told me I needed breaks front brakes. So I asked what did you change when you you just gave me breaks? He couldn't tell me. So I said go ahead and fix the breaks. About 4 weeks later the same issue came back. I'm not sure what I paid for but I got breaks twice within 6 months of each other and still have the same issue. Not sure how they have a good rating but my experience has always been rushed and feeling like they got over in my case they did. Now I need to find a place to resolve this issue. It's sad because I really like to patronize family businesses but that lost me and anyone I can persuade not to take their cars there. I'm minus approx $600 in 2 break replacements that didn't resolve my issue. I bet if I took it back they would say I need break again. Thank goodness I keep my receipts. read more

This is by far the BEST mechanic in all of Houston. I will never take my car anywhere else. I found them by chance a few years ago getting an oil change. I lost my car in the Memorial Day flood, and bought a used vehicle with 75,000 miles on it. In the last 3 years I've only gotten regular oil changes, and it now has 120,000 miles so I knew I was overdue for some extensive maintenance. I have been in Houston 10 years and have had nightmare experiences with other dealerships/car shops in the city. I am a single female and have seen the tendency for mechanics to try and take advantage of my perceived lack of knowledge, but I am also an engineer and have a deeper understanding of how things work/what parts are needed/what they should cost etc. I had researched/saved money knowing that there was a lot of work that needed to be performed for this maintenance. John did all the maintenance for MUCH less money than I had anticipated, and my car is running better now than it did when I first bought it. Not only are they honest, and fairly priced, but I truly believe they also have the best mechanics in the city. They really treat every customer that walks in the door as they would their family. I'm shocked that this place didn't even have a listing on Yelp! A friend mentioned this place in passing as her go-to for oil changes (+ other car services), so I decided to give it a try one day. The place is a humble establishment on a relatively quiet corner. I'm conflicted as I write this, as I see John's as a gem I wouldn't mind hidden from the world, but I won't be selfish. 1. Work done here is shockingly efficient; I think we've all experienced the hour++ waits at dealerships or other places where you kick yourself for forgetting to bring something to read and instead uncomfortably try not to make too much eye contact with other patrons in the waiting area. My oil change (including checking of fluids, brakes, filters, etc) took no more than 15 mins after I brought my car in--and they were pretty busy, too. For a very standard price of $31.50. 2. To my pleasant surprise, they vacuumed the inside of my car as well. A nice plus. 3. I gingerly asked if he would replace my car registration sticker as I was ashamedly too lazy to do it myself. He did it, cleanly, without a thought. 4. BEST selling point: after I paid and stepped outside to get my car, one of the guys said, "You have a bunch of scratches...would you like for us to buff some of those out?" Feeling sorry for my car, I said, "Sure!" and they spent the next 10 mins with rubbing compound--out of the kindness of their hearts--and it definitely helped. 5. As a closer, I tried to tip one of them...and he refused me. Then I flashed my best dazzling smile and professed my love for him. These folks are unbeatable. read more

IF YOU'RE A WOMAN, DON'T COME HERE UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE TREATED LIKE AN IDIOT BECAUSE OF YOUR GENDER AND NO OTHER REASON. I'd give them no stars if I could. I was the second owner on a 1997 BMW 540i. I kept that car in cherry condition, inside and out, for almost 20 years and had more than one mechanic tell me it was in better shape than cars 10 years newer. I never missed an oil change or other service; immediately noticed if things sounded, looked or felt different; asked questions and made sure I understood the answers. In other words, I'm an intelligent, responsible 46 year old grown woman who knows how to take care of her own car. When I moved to Houston in Jan 2015, I started coming here for lube, oil and filter changes based on the good Yelp reviews and had good experiences with John's sons. When I needed a new battery, I came here instead of my regular mechanic because it was a simple thing, their past service had been fast, their location was convenient and they provided shuttle services. All was well and good until one Wednesday night when my "Check Engine" light came on during my drive home from work. THE NEXT MORNING I drove it straight to John's Xpress Lube (without delay) since my normal mechanic couldn't fit me in on such short notice. I left the car with John but when he hadn't called by day's end, *I* was forced into calling HIM to get his diagnosis but all John would say was, "It's dead." He refused to tell me why or give any more details. Granted, it's a very old car, but he clearly expected me to throw in the towel with zero explanation. The only thing he WAS clear about was blaming me for ruining the engine because there didn't appear to be enough oil in it. His words and tone were extremely abrupt and condescending. Then he CHARGED me for his worthless diagnosis. Since he spent time on it, I didn't object to paying for that time, but I did object to paying for a diagnosis and not getting one. So apparently his (female) customers pay for insults. Unsatisfied with his no-explanation explanation, I paid to have it towed to another mechanic (this one recommended by a friend) who told me very quickly that the timing chain had broken, pieces had fallen into the oil pan, which in turn clogged the system and starved the engine of oil. From there, it was a quick downward slide into busted pistons so if I still wanted to drive the car, it would need an entirely new engine. He also said there was absolutely nothing I could've done to prevent or predict that, other than proactively replace the timing chain, which I surely would've done if my previous mechanic had suggested it - which he never did. Even though I ended up salvaging the BMW, I was more than happy to pay for towing and for a second mechanic to give me an actual diagnosis. Long story short, I have a long track record of taking good care of my vehicles and my last car problem was NOT due to negligence. But John from John's Xpress Lube charged me for a diagnosis he didn't bother to actually conduct, or share the results of; AND instead leapt to the conclusion I'm a stupid woman so the engine failure was MY fault; AND I was too stupid to understand or deserve an explanation; AND I was so stupid I wouldn't care or notice I was paying him for nothing. Needless to say, I would do my own repairs before coming to this shop again. DON'T COME HERE. JOHN IS AN OLD, RUDE, CHAUVINIST PIG -- THE ABSOLUTE WORST MECHANIC I'VE EVER DEALT WITH IN 30 YEARS!!! read more
