Upon some locals recommendations, we stopped in to try lunch. It was a little late, 2:00. It was a little dark inside with an interesting choice of decor, kinda like disco verses greasy spoon. Very pleasant staff and we had a great waitress. I was unsure of what to order so I asked our waitress her recommendations, she said the hamburgers are really good, fresh not frozen, so I ordered that. I asked for medium rare and it came cooked perfectly. It was very good and pretty good size. It came with French fries that were a little greasy but good. My husband ordered the fish and chips he didn't care for it, breading wasn't good and you could tell it had been frozen, nothing special. Only wish that they would let some light in and do a deep cleaning of the floors and tables just to freshen it up. Great friendly staff. read more

Attempted to place an order from Jolly Roger this morning. Called from the house and asked to place an order. Was put on hold. Began driving to the restaurant and was on hold for 7 minutes. Hung up and called again, and was put on hold. Was on hold till I was actually in the parking lot and then hung up and called again. Phone rang and rang. Gave up. Also frustrated that their website says delivery is available and their hours are 7am-10pm but delivery is NOT available through them. read more

We heard great things from friends about this place and were excited to try it. We are super easy to please when it comes to food, so it's pretty sad if we are disappointed. The waitress unfortunately was as dry as the pancake here : ( We got barely any gravy on our biscuits, and only a few home fries on our plate. Such a lovely experience. The food is fabulous. I had the chicken piccata. We had a big party and all dishes we got were amazing. I personally think their Italian food is their best feature. They make awesome house margaritas too. The staff is so friendly and kind. They work so hard. If there is a wait, it's totally it. Cute gift shop upfront. Great place to take the family. I come to town twice a year and eat here multiple times during each stay. Great food and great service. I enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner equally well. Tons of choices. This year I managed lunch or dinner several days each week. Two days I was served by a friendly lady who kept coming back to take care of our table and covered quite a crowd while making us feel very welcome. Sharon was just awesome, and everyone else is always pleasant too. Seafood is cooked really well. Pasta dishes are good. Both were very over cooked. There was a leak in the roof right above our table had water dripping in the seat next to me the entire meal. What a great time! Went on a Saturday night for some Karaoke and the place was filled with people having fun, laughing, drinking and singing along with whoever was up on stage! One of the few places in OBX open late. We stayed until midnight. Drinks were yummy! read more

From start to finish was a bad experience. Maybe would have been a different experience if we had another waitress. It felt like she was out of it most of the time. After being seated waited 40 minutes just to get our drinks. We saw others being served and they were seated after us. Once our food came we had to track her down for silverware. Ordered drinks that were very common and she stared at us blankly like she didn't know what we were talking about . (Example.. top shelf Margarita- which once we got tasted watered down). We tried The Jolly Roger out since they were only 2 miles from our cottage and I saw they advertised a $3.99 breakfast special. The waiter was very polite but repeatedly asked us the same questions about our orders. The breakfast special was only eggs, hash browns & toast so by the time you added a meat, the side was $3-4 so there was no savings. The food came our cold, the eggs were over cooked and the homefries were a solid grilled glob. On a plus side, if you have kids, they will probably enjoy the Christmas/pirate décoré. If you are an adult, eat on the deck outside as it's extremely dark inside. You wouldn't even know you were at the beach. read more

I'd seen this place many times during my visits to OBX but we never stopped and I kind of know why now! It's got a kind of trashy, but cool vibe though.. We were seated immediately which is a plus! Drink orders came quickly and we ordered our food. I ordered a bowl of She Crab soup that never came. When I asked the waitress about it she looked at the order she wrote down and said, "Well you dont want that with your dinner right?" Ummm, no.. I wanted it before dinner.. So I asked her to cancel it. My husband asked for oysters, but she was unsure how they were cooked. When my husband asked for clarification on how they were cooked, she replied, "Like shrimp". Gotcha..not really.. so cancel that too. He ended up with calamari instead. My 6 year old ordered fried shrimp and he loved it. I ordered fried flounder.. no flavor.. and it was not very good. The family decided to spend Thanksgiving week at the Outer Banks this year. No one wanted to deal with cooking a big meal, so our plan was to get a complete meal package from Harris Teeter (turkey, dressing, gravy, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, cranberry relish). All set, right? Got an email from HT saying they had to cancel the orders because of "quality issues." Welp. What's plan B? Most of the restaurants were closing for the holiday, but we found a few that were serving a Thanksgiving dinner. Jolly Roger sounded like a decent choice for all you can eat and the menu sounded pretty good. Credit to them for staying open, but that's the last nice thing I have to say. The check in was chaos. The hostess wasn't sure which groups she had already seated. We had 4:00 reservations, but stood around the small lobby/gift shop for 20 minutes before seating. First course was She Crab Soup. It tasted like they had replaced the crab with a shaker of salt. Inedible, and a poor start. Then, instead of a buffet service, they brought everyone a plate with all the menu items piled on it unappetizingly. The food was lukewarm and just OK, like a run of the mill cafeteria. Our server was awful. The place was busy, but she was not organized or attentive at all. For example, when she did make a rare appearance, she wouldn't take dirty plates back with her. The restaurant had set reservations for every hour, but it took us two hours to finish. A lot of people were waiting when we left. Finally, the nickel and diming. The meal cost was $34.95 and that was bad enough for the lackluster fare. One would think for that price, coffee and tea would be included. No - $2.95 extra for iced tea. Insult to injury, they tacked on a 'CC Surcharge' of $10.11. Who does that? I heartily do not recommend Jolly Roger for your next holiday "feast." read more

Questionable cleanliness Went here our first night in the Outer Banks. Had no idea how hard it was to find somewhere to eat after 5pm. This was the only place without an hour wait so we waited. I grew a bit nervous when I saw the amount of food on the menu. Way to much to choose from to prepare fresh but whatever. The waitress "Tee" was great but, as everywhere else, overworked due to staff shortages. She handled it great though. Daughter's chicken parm was rubberized and deflated, best way to describe it. Cheese had separated from chicken, seemed like it was microwaved on high for 10 minutes before leaving the kitchen. I had a chefs salad which was good, pretty fresh. Son had spaghetti which he devoured minus the meatballs which we're loaded with salt. Hubby was happy with the clam chowder and seafood lasagna. Now, having to wait I noticed that every square foot of wall was covered in something. Lights, signs, old photos, chachkies, etc. The floor was dirty, the restroom appalling. I can look past things but honestly felt disgusted after seeing the dirty areas. The layout is bizarre like they added new rooms as they grew. The karaoke area was pretty dingy. I wouldn't eat there in the future, way more appealing and appetizing places to choose from. read more

Great place down in kitty hawk! I've been several times many years ago, but this is my first recent visit. It did not disappoint! We went for a late breakfast and had FANTASTIC bloody Mary's and mimosas. Large and decent for the price. The ambiance is great. Quirky, plus I like the local feel. Had Little bit of a wait on the food, but there were multiple eight and ten tops, so expected. I had the MOST food I've ever seen after ordering the breakfast sampler! This is a hard review to write, because it wasn't always this way, but this week (9/25/21) I arrived at JR at 10:30 am on a Friday morning and sat at the bar. It was busy, but not full. I was quickly served a nice/strong Bloody Mary, but then waited 30 minutes before the bartender was available to take my food order. Once ordered, the bartender was again far too busy to follow up and after 45 minutes of waiting for my food he finally asked if my food had already been served... I looked at the empty bar in front of me and then back to him and said, "nope, not yet." After about 10 minutes of confusion, I was served half of my breakfast with the promise the other half would be right out. The first half included grits with cheddar melted on them and they were really good. I had to be at a work meeting at noon, so at five of noon I left cash on the bar to cover my breakfast, Bloody Mary and a substantial 50% tip because I didn't have to time to wait for my change and I could see the bartender was very stressed and relatively new to the job. I came back an hour later (I had a work thing) to make sure the bartender got my payment and to maybe get the second half of my breakfast. He literally didn't remember any of what had happened and just said, "I must have gotten it. I gave you your pancakes." Which was not true. I left before the pancakes came out. At that point a sensible server would have said, "Let's take care of this for you!" but he just stared at me and asked if I wanted to order a drink... I know they are busy and this person was new to his position, but not even remembering me and then not offering any kind of apology or acknowledgement that not getting what I paid for and taking a big fat tip for it might end up with a review like this one.... Don't judge a book, this place is a local institution for good reason. Divey place with very friendly people and terrific food. Had the Captain's platter, OMG, ridiculously good! The Italian sausage was fantastic, lots of fennel, and smoky too. Everything was fresh and flavorful, the pasta was great, and the plate was huge!! My wife had the Jolly's delight, and said it was super rich and sinfully delicious. We loved this place and we'll definitely be back. Come hungry! read more

Stop by this place on a Monday night. Place had karaoke and it stays open till 2am so decided to give it a try. Sat at the bar which was packed and only 1 bartender attending to everyone. Took about 8 minutes for another staff member to come behind the bar and take our drink menu. I ordered a cosmopolitan first drink came out with an ant floating in the drink! Bartender was polite and quickly remade my drink. My boyfriend ordered the shipwreck which looked good but when you took a sip it was nothing but overly sweet fruit juice. We had to order a double shot of Bacardi rum to add to the drink to make it taste like an alcoholic beverage. I will say the bartenders were friendly and after the bar cleared out a bit they were more attentive to us. The place in general is very dilapidated and in need of a major renovation. I get the pirate theme but at some point as a business owner you have to make changes and keep your business current. We didn't order food but evidently the place known for being the oldest Italian restaurant on the beach however the food menu is quite extensive from Italian to seafood to steak to having a breakfast. read more

Man this place is not a corporate operated establishment by far, it's a woman owned bad ass, no rules type of place!!! It's an incredible foodies type of place and the staff is so committed to Hospitality and the service industry, but most of all, they focus on one thing "The Food". Jolly's is a well managed place with character , that serves traditional Italian food and top choice seafood. Our server Christie, did everything under the sun to serve her customers, but unfortunately management didn't assist her or realize it was a busy night, Father's Day weekend. I don't want to get caught up on the negativity, this place is phenomenal. A bit of advice don't wait on the table staff on a alcohol beverage, just go see Andy at the bar and open a side tab, he will keep the drinks coming cold and ready, my man 100 grand. Decoré is fun and the staff was friendly. We were having trouble finding a place to stop to get lunch and ended up at the Jolly Roger because it seemed like an easier option. We were seated fairly quickly and got a drink orders in not long after sitting down. I don't normally comment on drinks, but I will say that my diet Pepsi tasted rather odd. Maybe the syrup was running low? For lunch nothing really stuck out on the menu so my friend and I ended up going with chicken quesadillas. A safe bet. And it was. Nothing out of the extraordinary, but did the trick and filled us up. Pricewise it was also a savvy option. Cheap, fast, to the point. It looks like the fun part about the Jolly Roger is definitely their bar. If I gave it another shot I would probably order a nice drink and maybe something fancier food wise. COVID note: The front entrance area can get a little congested without any sort of direction on how to space out. Once we got to the seating area it was pretty wide-open. I didn't see immediately were any booths were closed off to in courage social distancing, but the booths had tall backs so we didn't feel like we were sitting too close to anybody. Dinner beware - come hungry because the serving sizes range from big to enough to feed the entire table (and more) and its all good! Lobster mac and cheese, heavy on the lobster...and a lot of mac and cheese. Cioppino, again heavy on the seafood (muscles, clams, shrimp) and sausage with a tasty rustic tomato sauce. The food at dinner and at breakfast are quite exceptional. I had dinner on one night and breakfast the next morning. The service at dinner was quite exceptional. The service the next morning was somewhat lacking as the server seemed annoyed and had an attitude. Dinner was friendly and fast considering they were completely understaffed. The decor is rather whimsical and fun. The seafood lasagna while quite tasty but visually was a bit disturbing. It tasted pretty good but the texture and look were somewhat off. The stuffed mushrooms were very tasty however, the lemon was somewhat overpowering. The fries and the fried shrimp were cooked perfectly. The She Crab soup is the best I have ever had. The breakfast shown is the western omelette and whole wheat toast. The whole wheat toast is a rustic style whole wheat with whole grains in it and is actually very good. The Omelette is loaded with meat and cheese and is quite the value for the price. I would have probably given this five stars if it was not for the lacking seafood food lasagna and the somewhat unfriendly.service for breakfast the following morning. read more

We had an issue with our order, the server immediately became defensive after we kindly asked for a resolution.
