I appreciated this winery's variety in terms of tasting options: 3 or 7 tastings, and you can choose your wines. Even though it was crowding up, the people here tried to give all the tasters some attention and information. I really loved their Gewurtz and Napa Chardonnay. My wife and I were staying locally in the area and visited on a quiet Tuesday afternoon. Don't misunderstand me...I was glad it was quiet. There were several other couples visiting but not as busy I'm sure as a weekend. The winery was located at the top of a winding hill and offered great views. It was so peaceful and quiet. My wife and I missed the tour they offered but it wasn't the end of the world. We were happy to do a wine tasting. Very generous tasting of 7 wines for 15 dollars. In addition, they offered a very nice selection of snacks and proteins to absorb the alcohol. Our wine hostess was very polite, friendly, warm, and knowledgeable. We had a nice leisurely time sipping our wines and eating our snacks. We were able to stroll around the vineyard and see their barrels from a loft area. We aren't wine snobs but we ended up buying 3 bottles because we thought they were very good. We ended up with 2 whites and red. We actually thought all the red wines were excellent. Price didn't bother us because we had no problems supporting a local winery. If you want a nice little getaway for a few hours...this is it. I would recommend leaving the kids at home...if you can. read more

Attended the annual Jonathan Edwards spring fling. It's a 2 day event that you can buy a daily pass or one for the whole weekend. We bought a Sat pass. It's a wine tasting under a big tent and they have 2 bands that play through out the day. On arrival everyone gets a wine glass and a card to sample 6 wines from the servers located in the tent. There is also cash only serving station selling their wines by the glass or bottle. The event is a picnic style to enjoy on their beautiful grounds. There are some tables and chairs set up by the tent , but those go quick. Bring chairs and a blanket and some goodies to eat and enjoy the day. There is also a craft area and some food vendors there. There was a lobster roll/ clam fritter truck , taco truck , pizza truck and our favorite a seafood raw bar from Matunuck oyster company out of RI. We had a great time sampling their wines , enjoying the music and food. We also ended up buying a bottle of their Ct Chardonnay . It all paired quite well together . Even enjoyed a cigar I brought. Great relaxing day. Would recommend to wine lovers . But get their early to get a good spot. read more

Went here over the July 4 weekend. The vineyards cover the grounds on each side of the main road. Scenery and landscaping are quite beautiful. Grapes are growing two weeks ahead of schedule due to a hot summer. Overall, a beautiful place to stop and sample wine. There is $5 and $10 wine samplings. $5 buys you four small samplings of wine of your choice. You can bring your own food and eat on the many outdoor tables. I have one complaint is that the staff is disorganized and needs to improve service. I came here just in time for the 3pm tour. I was hanging out by the bar that is in the house. There was a crowd waiting as well. It wasn't til 20 mins. past the hour til another visitor said to the bartender, "is there a tour today?". The bartender said, yes, at 3. "well, it is past 3." The bartender hollers someone's name to give the tour. If you are going to have tour, it would be a good idea for the tour guide to remember to give it. The tour was very interesting as the guide gave the history and explain the types and origins of grapes grown here. Lasted about half hour. Also, the bartenders are disorganized and overwhelmed when serving the wines to a crowd that surrounds the bar. When they couldn't handle the crowd, they would shout to the people to go outside and go to the other bar. If you wanted to buy a bottle of wine, the bartender had to leave the bar area, retrieve it for you and handled the payment. I did see a couple of people buying the wines which is why the bartenders were overwhelmed in serving wines and handling wine purchases. What would be better operation is to have a separate area to purchase the wine bottles away from the bar area. Overall, this winery was worth the stop and and a beautiful place to walk around and take pictures. read more

Absolutely adore this winery, I think it's my favorite winery on the CT wine trail so far...we arrived on a beautiful Sunday, it was the most picturesque day & the front of the winery is something you would see right on a magazine cover. Beautiful. We walked in to the tasting room and then walked out onto the back desk which has awesome, brand new, high top tables that overlook the vineyard. We decided to skip the tasting and just get a bottle of the Sauv Blac. We asked the woman if we could try a small sample of a few wines before we bought the bottle and she happily obliged, and did not even charge us. The wine was delicious & very reasonably priced, I believe it was $21. We were also able to try a small sample of the Chenin Blanc & Red Zin (both were exceptional). I would highly recommend checking this place out! read more

Jonathan Edwards is a beautiful winery. The grounds are lovely and spacious; I would definitely recommend walking through the vineyard. The wine is not my favorite, but is OK. The plus is that the bottles are all pretty resonably priced, between $20 and $30, and there are two options for tastings, 4 or 7 wines. They also appear to have entertainment pretty regularly in the summer which is cool, although I've yet to go to one of the concerts. Important to note: it can be kind of expensive! Some of the shows are 50 bucks a ticket which, to me, seems pricey for a concert at a vineyard. I think my reasoning for 3 stars is that this vineyard feels a little impersonal compared to others I've been to. The wine and setting here are both nice, but I love going to vineyards with a great overall experience including talking to the staff, hearing about the wine, and chatting with other wine enthusiasts; I feel like these things are lacking at JE. I'm sure it's partially because they have become so popular and busy, but my preference is something a little less impersonal. read more

This is a beautiful winery to visit, and perhaps host an event. It caters to those who are especially looking for a place to picnic and enjoy the company of those around them. The winery encourages visitors to bring their own snacks, and then offers a selection of local cheeses and charcuterie, with average pricing on such items. The wine tasting here is six wines to give you a good idea of what they offer full bottles of, for purchase. Their outside seating and scenery is beautiful and a visit here makes for a beautiful day out. The tour is a really basic one that lasts about 15 minutes and is once a day at noon. I'd have to say you aren't really missing out on anything if you skip it to enjoy the views of the vineyard. read more

I've been looking to go to JE for a while and I finally made the trip today. This vineyard was very easy to get to and there's plenty of parking. The tasting room was beautifully decorated for the holidays. We enjoyed a tasting and a glass of wine. Overall, I liked the atmosphere of the place. The only downside was the lack of interior seating- we had to wait at the bar for a while before being able to sit after another few people left. However, there was plenty of space for outdoor seating so I'll definitely be back in the summer to bring a picnic and enjoy the nicer weather! read more

Spend almost 2 hours driving to visit the vineyards in Stonington and out of the 3 I visited this was my favorite. You pull up and immediately the scenery is breathtaking... the lady who served us was very pleasant, professional, and knowledgeable. Me and my friend sat on the outside deck and enjoyed the beautiful weather... wine was delicious... after we finished our wine we walked around and the grounds were so beautiful! My wife have come here many times over the years and it was always a great spot to have a glass and relax in a quiet setting looking over the vineyard. We were long time members of the wine club and have been to more than a few events here. My two stars is for the way this place has evolved. It went from a nice quite place to enjoy a glass to a bar loaded with loud bachelorette groups getting drunk on the way to Foxwoods or Mohegan. Ladies do us all a favor and skip this place and just get tanked and loud at the casinos, this is not the place for you. I have seen people leave shaking there heads because of this. The place is small, so it easily gets crowded and these groups make it unbearably loud. It has just become an obnoxious destination. Maybe the new law that is coming will curb these crowds to different locations that do not have a vineyard attached. I'm JE loves these groups to bring in the $$ but they have lost the true vineyard feel, and the return business of people that appreciate that type of atmosphere. They make one large sale and lose 12 small ones. The math is easy! It's people like Lindsay T below that have made these wineries unbearable to go to. These people think it's fair to just show up with 50 guests without notice and expect 5 star service. If the staff had known this many people were coming they might have staffed up to better service you. Or you could just not take a large group to a vineyard these places aren't Cracker Barrel's. Yes you and your guests may have spent a 1000 dollars but they probably lost 4 times that as they could not service people who would come on a regular basis. Not to mention the manpower expense to service a group this size. read more

We visited at the suggestion of a friend and weren't disappointed. The grounds are lovely and the staff was quite friendly. We did a bar tasting inside and enjoyed most of the wines. We decided to buy a bottle of the Stone Table White, the Sauvignon Blanc and the Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. That's right, Napa. They do not grow all of their grapes here. I'm OK with that, but I know some aren't. You just can't grown great red grapes in New England, with Cabernet Franc being the closest to the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. I'm just not a big Cabernet Franc fan. After our tasting we bought some cheese, crackers, and a few glasses of wine to enjoy outside. I'm looking forward to my next visit. read more

We were treated with so much disrespect while doing a tasting, the lady paid no attention to us, and while doing the tasting couldn't even give us a a good description of the wine. We did like the wine, yet decided that we wouldn't get any bottles to go because of how we were treated, which is sad because I definitely would of loved to bring some home. A good friend recommended the Jonathan Edwards Winery as a possible wedding reception venue and the fiance and I went to check it out yesterday. Having visited a lot of wineries and tasted a lot of wines in Napa and Sonoma over the past couple years, the bar has been set pretty high for wineries. I tell you, this place totally exceeded our expectations! Conveniently located just 90 minutes from Boston, you really feel as though you have been transported to California wine country as you are driving through the quaint little town of North Stonington and up the hill to the estate. Even though the grounds were covered in snow, it wasn't hard to imagine the property's beauty in warmer months. We met with Erica, who is the marketing manager at JE, who we absolutely adored (she did her job extremely well and we ended up booking a date for fall 2010)! We also were treated to a complimentary wine tasting by the friendly staff - we tried at least 8 different wines (Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurtzraminer, Chardonnay, Cab Franc, Zinfandel, Syrah/Merlot/Cab blend, Merlot, Cab, etc.) - some Napa grown and some Estate grown (all equally impressive), toured the grounds, took some pics and had just a lovely experience. We are so excited to work with JE over the next year and cannot recommend this winery enough to people who want an extraordinary winery experience on the East coast that nearly parallels that of wine country on the West coast. read more

I think my biggest problem with this winery is that it's not really a Connecticut winery. I attended their festival in June, and after paying 30 dollars (!) for entrance and a tasting, I was left with a sour taste in my mouth. The winery itself is beautiful, and you're allowed to wander through their barrel cellar, which is very nice. At this festival they had food offerings, which were alright, but were way to pricy for the portions being served. On to the wines. The whites are mostly made from the grapes grown on the vineyard, and are fairly par for the course for CT wineries. They weren't too sweet and had a good crisp acidity, which I enjoyed. The reds were good as well, but here's the problem: the grapes are grown in California. Why on earth would you truck thousands of gallons of wine juice from California just to make the wine in CT? It doesn't make any sense, and in a Green economy such as we have now, it's a major carbon footprint. Those trucks take up a lot of fuel, and you pay the price. $35 for a run-of-the-mill California red is ridiculous. Save your money, and your time, and get a comparable Napa Valley red for 15 bucks at a liquor store. You'll be saving money and the planet. read more

Having lived in Northern California for a few years, I got quite spoiled being so close to Napa and Sonoma. Jonathan Edwards rocks at bringing the Napa feel to my new backyard of Connecticut. Sure it helps that they get half of their grapes from Napa and their vines were from Napa too, but its more than that. I did a full tasting yesterday and every single wine was great. Cab Franc, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, they all go down smooth. The best Winery in CT hands down and better than almost all in NY's Finger Lakes Region. Great architecture of the main house, nice tour, friendly staff, and close to home. My new wine "basement" just gained a few premier bottles of vino. read more

I visited the winery today for the 2nd time. We arrived at 3:45 for a tasting (they stop tastings at 4:30 according to their website). The promptly poured us glasses. Our tasting ended around 4:25, and we asked if we had time to have a glass outside. The bartenders told us absolutely. We quickly went outside to enjoy our glass, and were ushered out by another employee telling us that they were closing (their website says they close at 5pm). We went out front on the patio with a full glass, and soon after were told we had to leave, due to a wedding. I asked if there were anywhere we could go, due to the fact that they sold us a full glass of wine 5 minutes earlier, and we were told we could enjoy it. They told us that they didn't care, and we had to leave. They always offer a glass as a "courtesy to guests." It's more like an opportunity to turn a profit if you ask me. I am so disappointed with my trip here. We spent over $120 on bottles, wine and tastings, and were rudely asked to leave, before they were even scheduled to close. I understand there was a wedding going on, but they should have planned better. I will never come back to this winery due to the incredibly rude staff. I've never been treated so poorly. read more

Jonathan Edwards has a "choose your own adventure" (my words, not theirs, but feel free to use that!) tasting where you check off 3 or 7 choices from the menu and go from there. Part of me likes having options, but part of me wants to just taste them all. So I tasted 7. And I can honestly say that they all ranged from decent to very good. Some of the grapes are grown locally (the "estate" wines) and some are grown in Napa. Again I am of 2 opinions. Part of me likes having the variety of California grapes in a state where climate heavily restricts what will grow; it makes for some repetitive wine tastings. But, there is also part of me that thinks about the huge carbon footprint of importing grapes/juice. The two wineries we had visited prior to Jonathan Edwards were very white-heavy, so we were happy to enjoy a few reds and ultimately buy a bottle of Syrah to enjoy on the deck. As I said, though, all of the wines were tasty, including the whites. I wish I had gotten the name of the woman who helped us, who was friendly, funny, and informative as she guided us through the wines. We also tried the dark dessert wine, and I recommend not skipping it! It was a dark and decadent treat to close out the tasting. Worst winery I've been to. You might as well buy a bottle and drink at home. They have too many lame rules that I've never heard in a winery. No tastings outside, no waiter service outside, no real food except crackers and cheese bought from their little store. Same crackers and cheese you buy at the store. In the package still. You have to buy your bottle inside and bring it out to drink. Try to do a tasting inside. It's crowded and mayhem. Some said it's just him. Their wine isn't even made from their grapes. They import from California and "age" it in their barrels. Never heard of this but their bottle say California. Just a lame vineyard. Avoid. read more

Oh boy. Having read some negative reviews of Jonathan Edwards, I was expecting the worst but hoping for the best. Unfortunately, while our experience wasn't one-star, it was far from five. The tasting room was very crowded on our recent trip, and as a result, the service we received was pretty bad. Not once did the woman pouring our wines explain what she was pouring. In fact, every time she came back to us, she asked what wine we were on, leaving it up to us to follow along on the provided list. Not the best saleswoman. We were put off by that because it was so obvious they just wanted to get people in and out. What's worse is that the wine wasn't that great, and the prices of some were laughable. As a previous reviewer said, "$35 for a run-of-the-mill California red is ridiculous." There were two tasting options. The first was $6 for four samples, and the second was $12 for 10 samples plus the souvenir glass. We opted for the latter, but quickly realized our money would have been better spent elsewhere. read more

If you appreciate good, quality wine, you'll love Jonathan Edwards wine. As someone who goes to Napa every year (7 years) and loves a good Napa red, I have no issue with JE importing grapes, especially since they're from his own vineyard that he's cultivated all on his own. So he owns two vineyards, big deal! Have you HAD New England reds? Terrible! Jonathan Edwards (the guy) is approachable, all around nice guy who loves wine. Christine is a fantastic host / wine pourer, she kept us entertained through all 12 wines this last visit. The wine here is like nothing you'll find on the east coast (and I've tasted from Maine to Virginia). Most are sweet and sour. JE's wines are light, delicate and incredibly SMOOTH. I generally don't move towards whites, but I filled half my case with his Connecticut and Napa Chardonnays. A smooth white? Damn hard to find. Filled that rest of our case with their Stone Table Red, Petite Sirah and Sirah. Brilliant, especially the Sirah. Since we're case club members (all you need to do is buy a case once to be a part of it) we get a 15% discount and free tastings for yourself and four friends. Generally as a member, if you schmooze with your sommelier, you can taste as much as you want. Generally, we get to taste all 12 because they know we're gonna buy a case anyway. Additionally, the ground are beautiful. Explore the grounds to find hidden picnic tables. I'd recommend tasting on rainy/crappy days to get more time from your pourer, because it's a busy place! My only dislike is that everyone has to choose the same wines to taste, which will make people who only drink reds/whites unhappy. Sooo... If you're an 8-buck chuck who's happy drinking from the bargain bin, your palate might not be ready for these wines. If you're a wine collector with a cellar full of $75-$300 bottles like myself, you're going to be really impressed at the quality of these $20-$30 bottles. read more

Jonathan Edwards Winery is always a good time! Two of my friends belong to the case club, which means free tastings for them and a few friends! Otherwise tastings are about 7$, typical for most CT wineries, and you get to try several different types. The pours are usually a healthy size so you can share with a friend. Since you choose between about 10-15 different types of wine, its nice to choose different ones and split it. You can bring your own food, buy a bottle and have a nice little picnic. Most of their wines are delicious. I've only been to 7 wineries in CT thus far... but right now JE produces my favorite wines. I agree, the bottles are a little on the high side... but I don't usually buy too many bottles directly from vineyards the first time I go. The case club seems worth it based on my friends' experience. I attend the wine festival every fall (coming up next weekend) and it is a huge party! They have fun family stuff like hay rides and stomp contests but they also have great local bands and wines to try! read more

3 stars is reasonable, and don't get me wrong, Johnathan Edwards Winery is a beautiful place. It's been very precisely contructed and packaged to look like those important Napa wineries that pull in hundreds of tourists a day. Essentially, that's what JE is. Of the 50 acres of land the winery has, none of what it produces is actually from New England. It is in fact, shipped over via tanker truck from Napa Valley! It wasn't exactly what were were looking for in terms of Southern New England wine expedition, but it certainly would be a lovely place to either cater a wedding or other large event, or even to bring a picnic on a nice day and sprawl across the large yard watching the clouds breeze through the sky and pattern the pastoral hills. For $6 you sample 5 of their California wines, none of which (to me - and wine is completely subjective) are worth their $27++ price tags. You get a large pour and are welcome to hang out as long as you like, but we missed the winery tour so we didn't stick around long. read more

Five stars isnt enough. For reals. What a great time. First off, today was perfect (perf) in regards to the weather. Sunny, breezy and not too hot which definately helped my overall mood. Hooray for summer. The drive there was no big deal, thanks to google maps. We made good time. The parking lot was not too full, which I was glad to see. Over crowded places are not my thing. The walkways were really inviting and were built with stone/wood and made organic stairs to get up a slight hill to the winery. The front area was covered with flowers and there were clever little details everywhere, even the hand rails were pretty. The tasting room was nice too. Hardwood and high celings. There was an outdoor deck with umbrellas and tables. Perfect picnic zone, by the way. Info Blast: I didnt know this but you can actually bring a picnic lunch and buy a bottle and hang out there. Yes they give you glasses, but not to keep, they are three dollars. Maybe I am young and dumb, but I had no idea people were doing this. I have been missing out! They even have festivals at this place! October 3rd and 4th this year. The reason we went so early was to catch the daily tour at noon, totally free by the way. The lovely tour guide/bartender/awesome wealth of knowledge was so kind enough to offer us a small tasting to make the tour a little more fun, and how can I say no to that?! So off we go into the vineyard as we sip cold pinot gris and admire the scenary. Our guide delivers a wonderful presentation about the owner, Jonathan Edwards, and how he evolved from learning to be a speech pathologist to a winer maker/vineyard owner. Factoid: Did you know that it is said that if you plant rose bushes at the end of each row of grapes that you just might distract incoming pests? They would rather have the sweet rose buds instead of the grapes. It may not actually be the best way to fend off critters but it sure is pretty. The inside of the winery is very modern. They have giant steel tanks and french oak barrels from the floor to well over our heads. Our guide goes over how they bottle and label the wine, which is something I have never seen before, and this is NOT my first winery. Very cool. Labor intensive, yes! They bottle over 12,000 bottles a year, by hand and they also help others bottle as well. After the informational tour, we go inside to drink some wine! You have two options for the tastings. Four wines for ten dollars, or seven wines for fifteen dollars, so when in rome...we tried seven. Four whites, three reds. The pinot gris and the gewürzwtraminer were my two favorite whites, but their merlot was by far my favorite red, amazing. I had to get the gewürz and the merlot to go. Jackpot. I even signed up to help with the fall harvest this year. They take volunteers and pay you in wine! If you help with harvesting the grapes for one whole day you just earned yourself three bottles! I would love to experience the whole process from protecting the roots from frost to picking the fresh grapes! Free wine or not. I'll start off by admitting I'm not the biggest wine drinker. I enjoy a glass every now and again but usually default to craft beer as my beverage of choice. I have had the chance though to visit Jonathan Edwards a couple of times and truly have some mixed emotions. Based on two different trips to the vineyard, it has been pretty much hit or miss. The wine itself has been pretty good (I've enjoyed some of their white and red offerings). By doing a tasting you obviously have the ability to try a few different styles before committing to a glass or bottle (if you decide to do so). When it comes to the service, the first time around the staff was knowledgeable and friendly. The second time around they came off quite pushy and rather rude which definitely took away from the overall experience. The tasting room and deck / outdoor space overlooking the vineyard is very nice and inviting. While I do like some of the wines they offer (not all estate grown) they do seem to be a little on the pricier side. And ultimately I do hope that the inconsistency in service was more of a fluke and not the norm moving forward. read more

Jonathan Edwards is the quintessential New England winery. Tucked away in the back-country of Southeast Connecticut, this is one of my favorites CT Farm wineries, here's why: "New England charm. Napa style." With 40+ acres of land, and twenty acres of vineyards, these guys have been around since 2000. Bringing over Napa Valley wine to the east, farming continues to this day. Jonathan Edwards, we were told, specializes in red wine. On a beautiful Autumn Sunday, the place was bustling with activity. The place was buzzing with all types of energy from wedding photos, picnics and wine tours. We decided to skip the chaos of sampling. Though tempting, everyone was going for the "Sampler Tasting" of 4 Wines ($10) or 7 wines ($15). We went with a bottle of their merlot and found a spot tucked in the back of the property. Soft breeze behind us, relaxing views ahead of us and bottle of red in hand, we bee-lined to the peace and tranquility of the rolling hills of CT. Walk around and you learn that Jonathan Edwards is a nice little getaway. With nothing more than the grass underneath our toes and sun on our foreheads, we were so excited to just be. Wine quality was great and the service was courteous. Price point is a bit more expensive than most but the wonderful overall experience might be enough to offset that. This was our second stop at a few vineyards in the Stonington area. We didn't get a good vibe here overall. We told the pourer we wanted to participate in the tour before starting the wine tasting. She tried to change our minds, but it didn't really seem like it should matter one way or the other. Besides, it was mistily raining and who wants to be carrying around a wine glass in the rain? Grounds: The grounds seemed nice. On the tour we walked out to the grapes and then back to the area where the grapes are processed. There is ample space to sit outside on a nice day, but we didn't see anything available for when the weather was not so nice. There was no place to sit inside either. Note: This may have only been an issue on the day we were there, but there was a note on the bathroom door saying there was trouble with the well. There was no water in the sink and the toilet could not be flushed. It's my hope that problem has already been resolved because that also did not lend well to the experience. Tasting: The tasting itself felt rushed. Our pourer didn't spend any time talking to us. She was just interested in the two other groups to our right. They had been willing to take their glasses with them on the tour, but who knows if that had anything to do with her cold demeanor to us. None of the wines were bad but none really stood out to us either. This vineyard had the largest selection of wines available to taste and purchase. The tasting was $12 for 7 wines. The take-away logo glasses were not included in the price. This was the only vineyard we visited on our trip where we did not buy at least one bottle before we left. read more

Quickie for now - Yeah, this place is awesome. As mentioned - its like walking into a California Winery! Friendly people, pouring surprisingly enjoyable wines. The building is gorgeous - not to mention its surroundings. The grounds are beautiful - even in the middle of winter. I can't wait to see the things in 'bloom'! read more

We absolutely love this winery! You can tell that Andie, Todd, and everyone else that works in the tasting room love their jobs, always so welcoming. The wines are wonderful! Yes, there are grown mostly in cali, but reds don't grow well in the new England climate. My favorite wine is the locally grown CT chardonnay. Simply delicious! Have a great visit! read more

This was the first stop on day full of winery visits. There are six vineyards within a small geographic area. We choose to start here because they were the only one to open before noon. The wines were good, but nothing stood out. What did stand out was Sandy. This lovely women was our server and was simply a delight. She was incredible knowledgeable in the wines, the wine making process and even the history of the winery. We were so impress we determined that she must be the owner. To our surprise, she was not. This is an incredible place. I came for a tour and ended up doing a tasting, as well as making a few other purchases. Sandy and Rae are so kind, very knowledgeable, fun to chat with and handled multiple guests at once with ease and grace.
