The ice tea is so refreshing!! There is cinnamon and cloves in it. The fried thighs are just spectacular. Bring your appetite if you come. Just try the hot pops (fried cauliflower). The sauce has a little heat but so good. Did I mention the fresh made pickles? They were in the picnic sauce, on the side of the fried thighs and in the potato salad. Worst establishment ever in life!!! I made reservations to celebrate a birthday. They said I could only reserve for 10 people, and would need to waitlist the other 10+ as they arrived. When we arrived, the little old red headed lady had THE worst attitude ever. She said we couldn't be seated until all our party had arrived... we had 9 there to start. SHE WOULD NOT SIT US! After finally being seated, more of our party poured in and I immediate put two names down for parties of 5. We waited and socialized in the back room where our reservation for the first 10 was. The same red headed lady came and got in my face saying she felt I was manipulating the situation because I asked about the two tables of 5 each(one open, and the other about to open). She wouldn't let me speak, kept cutting me off, and even told the waitress for our reserved table to not only stop taking orders for us, but didn't place our order she already took. She intentionally filled with parties of THE SAME SIZE who were further down the list that our parties. After wasting an our hour in this run down "business", we decided against spending our money in this dump. That lady was completely unprofessional, rude, and a drain to this "business". I had high hopes from this place. Needed to slip into a cozy neighborhood place and have a nice meal and an end of the week conversation with my other. This place did not deliver, alas. It feels like a restaurant in one of those small Southern towns in Louisiana or Arkansas that's trying to come off hip. But isn't. Cinder block walls and linoleum floor turn the place into an echo chamber and that's made all the worse by a stereo system blasting much too loud music from a cheap stereo system. Add to that a loud bar crowd cheering at an NBA game on the 2 big-screen TVs overhead (yikes) and I literally could not hear my partner although we were in a far corner. Overall, the ambience is like that of a decent looking sports bar in a Holiday Inn. The pirogues were OK but not great. I ordered what sounded like an interesting black pepper and parmesan noodle dish and tasted little to no pepper. Basically a fettucine alfredo base I could easily make at home just as good. The staff is friendly (if a little too small-town Southern friendly) and also like most small town southern places, it was much too air-conditioned (the night we went it was raining and 65 but the AC was on full blast). Too many really sophisticated places in the big city of Dallas for the same price (appetizers $8-12; entrees, $10-24) to end up in a place that feels more like Yazoo City Mississippi. read more

I really wanted to love this place. The atmosphere is welcoming and I've heard good things. I came on a Saturday and it was busy as expected so we had to wait awhile for our waiter to come around. Which wasn't a problem. My coffee was cold, but the waiter fixed it fairly quickly. Once we got our food (a good while later) things tasted fine until my mother found a long black hair under her eggs. She pointed it out to our waiter and he asked if she would like him to take it back. She declined since we didn't want to wait around, since it took so long the first time and said she would just eat the bacon from the plate. When the bill came her food was still on the bill, so I flagged him down and asked him if it was appropriate for us to pay for it. He said he would check on it. 15+ minutes later the bill was dropped back off and only a portion of the plate was taken off. We paid in cash and needed change, but no one would look our way again. It hurts me to give them one star....but a womans gotta do what a womans gotta do! Such a disappointment! From the moment we walked in to the moment we walked out, EVERYTHING was terrible. We =me and 2 friends. The waiter was rude, it took forever for the food to come out. My friend insisted we stay because the food would be worth it. And once the food came out it was terrible....boy was he wrong! So wrong! Horrifically wrong! I ordered biscuits and gravy with a side of sausage and 2 over medium eggs. When my food was finally brought out ...long after the others. .....the eggs were fried hard. The bacon that comes with it was burnt and of course the waiter was still rude...and hard to look at without losing my appetite. The gravy was extremely peppery...yes I did use the word peppery...deal with it. My friend ordered the power brunch which consists of chicken breast, egg whites, spinach and tomatoes. Now the chicken tastes horrible like freezer burnt and it looked old and sad. The spinach was extremely meh but the easiest thing to eat on the plate for him. I've watched him eat some pretty disgusting things but that plate is top 3...he couldn't even finish half which is surprising cause HE EATS EVERYTHING! next, my friend had some egg scramble with tortillas and brunch potatoes. ..she ate it and immediately felt sick after...it may have had the bad chicken in it as well. if it was up to me we would have left long before we had all decided what we wanted to order but I didn't drive and my friend insisted that we stay there and eat. We met up our friends for dinner on a Saturday night here and I thought this place was ok. For starters -- we ordered a pepperoni roll and the pierogies. The pepperoni roll wasn't anything exciting but the pierogies were super delicious. Our group ordered two pasta dishes -- one with the Parmesan and black pepper and the other with the pork ragu. The noodles were perfect in both dishes but my favorite out of the two was pork ragu. The Parmesan and black noodles were missing some seasoning. I ordered the BLT sandwich with onion rings -- my sandwich was great and I LOVED my onion rings! For a Saturday night at around 7PM there weren't a lot of people there but there were plenty of staff waiting around for the rush. Not sure if it was an off night or not but they weren't too busy when we were there. Although I enjoyed most of what I tried, I'm not sure if this would be a spot I'd come back to since we don't get to Dallas often and there are so many other spots to try. read more

I've been a customer for years and have never been disappointed...until today. I usually go to Jonathan's Oak Cliff but it was closing when we arrived so they told us we could go to Jonathan's Diner. It was a 30 min. wait although there were several empty tables. Got seated in the back room near emergency door. First thing I noticed was a stack of dirty dishes containing left over food sitting on the floor right near our table. SO DISGUSTING! When I pointed it out to the waitress, she told me she was working alone and that she would get to it. She wasn't rude but I was already disgusted since it was right by the table. Adding to my disgust was the water in my chair. My fork wasn't clean and my food was cold and not good at all. I know the chicken and waffle is very popular and is usually delicious. Not sure what happened today. It was a miss! They need to improve service, cleanliness and food quality at this location. read more

Whenever I arrived a Jonathon's Diner in the morning last Friday at 10:46am, my first impression was already kind of meh. But growing up in the Houston area, I've learned that some of the best food comes from hole-in-the-wall restaurants (i.e Mel's Diner off of Hufsmith Rd in Tomball, Texas). I was meeting my girlfriends parents here and whenever I got there, they had already gotten a table out on the backside of the building. The entire bunch had already ordered coffee and water and knew what they wanted but were waiting for me to decide. After quickly finding what I wanted (deciding what I wanted within 2 mins). We seemed to let time slip by, talking for about 30ish minutes and not even even noticing that our waiter hasn't checked on us. We gave her til 11:32 before we decided to tell them that we were ready to order. Our server was no where to be found but the hostess said that she would let her know and send her out. We ended up waiting another 20 minutes and having to go in a 2nd time to get here before our waiter decided to show up and after taking our order. The whole time we thought our food was being cooked, we have to go in a 3rd time to ask where our food is because it was now 12:25. We soon realized that they weren't going to make our food anyways because we "were too needy when asking for our waiter". I'm honestly glad I did not get to try this food because if you have negative energy cooking food to "nourish the soul", you'll most likely regret it later down the road and it will suck the life out of you. Wasted 2 hours of my life and had to suck up the drive to south Texas and grab buccee's because of this terrible family owned restaurant. Buccee's as usual did the trick. Avoid this service and this restaurant because the first thing is to make sure the customer is feeling . Be easy fam and only eat nourishment for the soul with great people. read more

I have always loved the food at Jonathon's but today when my children and I went to the diner (for the first time since the name change) it was an outright disappointment. The waiter told me to sit anywhere and then left--there were no high chairs anywhere visible. I had to wait for several minutes with toddlers on the loose then he came back and was shocked to see me still there. Everything we touched was covered in a greasy film. The floor was slippery and visibly filthy. Nothing could compel me to go back there. I did stay and order food and after he put it on the table the waiter asked if I would like anything else today. What a brilliant way of telling a customer you'd like to be done with them. I've been looking for a family friendly restaurant in my neighborhood and will never go back here. You can't get anything in this place in a timely manner. Your wait is long. When you're seated you'll have a long wait for water. The wait is even longer for coffee. The wait for cold mediocre food is long. What you can get quickly is an attitude. The host got an attitude when I asked for the waitress after waiting for 20 minutes. The waitress came after 35 minutes of waiting without water. The waitress came and asked if she could answer anything about the menu and if we were ready as if we inconvenienced her. I asked for water and coffee, she indicated that she would take our order (for food). We waited another 20 minutes for water and I asked how long it would take for coffee. Some guy showed up before our waitress with water he got from a faucet right in front of us. The cups were dirty. She poured the coffee and remarked in a sarcastic manner, thanks for being patient. The food came about 45 minutes after. She came back to the table to ask if we we were ok, my party told her that we were hungry. The waitress said that the food was worth the wait. It wasn't. The food was cold and tasted like crap. The coffee tasted like cigarettes. The restaurant is loud and sounded like a cafeteria. The overall experience was horrible. I was so embarrassed that I looked at the menu and suggested the other Jonathan's Oak Cliff to be told that they couldn't seat a party of 5. We ended up at this horrible establishment, I assume, owned by the other place who can't be bothered with any party over 4. This place should start over. read more

AWFUL. We so want to like this place but it has deteriorated into an afterthought of whatever the owners vision must have been. The first time we visited on a rec from someone in our building it was quite good. The waitress was personable, knowledgeable and suggestive. The second, nice gay guy who was great except the kitchen was out of most everything. Third time, we walk in and don't see anyone for at least 5 minutes. Barflies were there for happy hour and running the joint. Finally someone comes out and seats us. We order wine and the guy does not know how to open the bottle (it was a screw cap), does not know how to pour for a taste, picks up wine glass to pour with his finger in the interior of the glass. Then brings a condiment container instead of a wine bucket and tries to shove the bottle into the container. No luck. Barflies are screaming for more before happy hour is over. Bartender/waiter quits and leaves the place, other busboy leaves after taking our order and comes back to tell us there are no more potatoes (it's a friday night) The cook is now seating people and delivering drinks to barflies. Finally, the good waiter from our second visit appears ( he must be in charge because there is no GM). He tries to handle the few people that are dining and is doing his best with what he has to work with. Entree arrives. Two pork chops with some sort of relish. Inedible. I eat half of one but leave the other. Apparantly the owners are Cindy and someone who also own Jonathans down the street. This place could have so much potential but the last two times we have been here, it seems that it is on it's last leg. Too bad but please close it already. Put it out of our misery. Our first visit, but definitely not our last! Sometimes places you have heard about don't measure up, but Jonathan's exceeded all expectations. I had chicken fried steak and eggs, my wife had migas, and her mother had chicken and waffles. We all tasted each other's, but now I just want to try everything on the menu. The peppered gravy was wonderful on everything ... we even ordered extra. And Cindy, our server, was just absolutely the best! They have limited seating, so I suggest you go "between" peak times (like we did). Only other caution ... some menu items we saw on the website were not offered until later in the day. My family ate here last night since it is down the street from where our son and his girlfriend just moved. Our meal and the server were wonderful. We started with their fried cauliflower with lightly spicy dip and their pimento cheese on crustinis. Very yummy. I had the Chef's special rib eye steak over spaghetti squash with a delicious gravy on top. Can't wait to enjoy the leftovers today. The menu is different and fun! I highly recommend. Check it out!!! Saturday, June 24th at 8:58am I walked into an unfortunate situation. The owner was using explicit language and his body tone was completely aggressive. I honestly thought I walked into a restaurant brawl. The owner proceeds to say "They F****parking close to my car. They need to watch what the hell they are doing. D****." The owners employees began to tell him to calm down and relax. But wait there is more! I shared what I witnessed to our waiter and his response was "Well he has two restaurants and works hard for his benz." Unbelieveable response right?! I could not believe what I was being told. I knew I had to leave and call back to state my concerns. I called and was directed to speak with the Owner's wife. When I shared my experience she says "Oh yes. I know exactly who you are." I'm thinking, If you saw this take place, you being the Owener's wife why didn't you apologize or take accountability for my unfortunate experience? The owner's behavior and lanuage was deplorable and I will not be supporting this local business. I spend my money where I'm celebrated not tolerated. read more

We gave Kessler Eating House a whirl last night and was glad we did. If you're a fan of comfy, casual neighborhood gastro pubs then KEH will suit you just fine. As soon as we hit the door we were greeted warmly and had a friendly, knowledgeable waiter. After a few swigs of wine we ordered potato Pierogis for a start. These were quite tasty and the portion perfect for two. This was followed by pasta with pork ragu and the wife had the OG salad. Both of these selections were generous and I'll of flavor. The pasta is house made as are many ingredients. We topped this off with a hunk of Texas Sheet Cake topped with everything but the kitchen sink, washed down with steaming cups of decaf. I admit, we're Oak Cliff dwellers so I'm a booster of the 'hood, even the scuffed up precincts. Anyway, if you're from another part of town, take the leap, cross Big Marge and grab a bite. My husband and I landed here for dinner on a Friday night Around 630 P. There were only a couple tables of people when we got there and the parking lot was virtually empty. But by the time we left there was almost a full parking lot and things were starting to get hopping. Upon walking inside I was very surprised and pleased to see a nice pop of purple with the bar chairs, rolled napkins, and shirts on the waitstaff. It was a simple, retro but modern clean looking place with some abstract wall art. My husband and I shared the Kessler salad, he had a special which was pork chops and two- cheese grits, I had a grilled chicken pasta special which was made with a black pepper cream sauce and homemade noodles. Then we topped that off with the Jon bars dessert. Everything was completely amazing and we loved it. The presentation was beautiful on ALL the plates and the pricing was very fair. Portions of everything were very generous. I had leftovers even after my husband picked at my pasta grilled chicken plate. I can't wait to go here again and try some of the other things. Our family loves this place. The housemade noodles (either with tomato-basil or parmesan/black pepper) are delicious. We also have really enjoyed the huge sandwiches (half of a sandwich is easily a meal) - especially the turkey Reuben and roasted pork versions. The appetizers are delicious and unusual. After a friend recommended trying the chicken and waffle, my mom and I drove across town for some what I hope to be great tasting food. Little did I realize it would be a wasted trip? Before I could try their food I observed something that I was not so comfortable with. A young man came from around the kitchen area hold my waffle in his bare hand and tossed it to another man through the air who then caught it and place it in the to go box. I than ask the bartender for the manager, and he told me he was the manager. I explained what I had just observed and he said he would talk to the guys. He walked to the back and came back without saying a word to me. I than asked who was the owner and the bartender pointed to another guy who was cooking the food. I asked to speak to him and first he told me he is in the middle of cooking and so I waited. He then turned back to me and said "if you expect me to do something about it I'm not". He continued with "if you don't like the way we do things you can leave and eat somewhere else". Feeling very shocked I explained how I had just observed one guy with no gloves on his hand through my food to another guy. He repeated that's the way we do things and you can leave if you don't like it. He explained he has two restaurants and he does not tell me how to do my job so don't tell him how to do his.
