Well, it's officially goodbye to this place. Ordered a four piece fish and chips to share and two diet cokes. The bill was $37.07. The young man tending to us was hustling so he deserved his tip of $8.00 so I walked away with a bill of $45.07. You had the audacity of charging $11.00 for two little cups of Diet Coke??? This is a pet-friendly outdoor seafood restaurant I recommend without hesitation. It's affordable and has the freshest and most delicious lobster I have had lately. Our accommodation was nearby so we came here for lunch. We all had the salmon, fish and chips, the shrimp, and the lobster. Everything we had was fantastic. My husband and I especially enjoyed the lobster the most. It looked delicious and very fresh when it first appeared. Since it was fresh it was easy to cut with the cutter. So The Faux Pas won't happen like Julia Roberts on the Pretty Woman movie set. We highly recommend this dish. The location sits close enough to Dana Point's main attractions that visitors can enjoy a pre-dining stroll along the pier or a post-meal walk on the harbor. Besides, this thoughtful restaurant understands that pets are family members so the dining space accommodates dogs of all sizes. There were a few customers with their dogs while we were dining there. Nothing like fresh, delicious seafood! Fantastic selections on the menu ... seafood platters to tacos to burritos to salads and more. What I loved was the taste of the freshness of the fish ... not what you would necessarily get at a chain seafood restaurant. Wow--can't believe we've never eaten here after all our visits to Dana Point. What a great little café! We sat outside, which was very pleasant, though I wish I had gone inside to check out the interior as well. Service was a bit slow, but very friendly. Our server was especially kind and welcoming. The food was extremely delicious--fresh, with flavors that were perfectly balanced and complemented each other well. I'm already looking forward to coming back to try more items. The only minor issue was the pigeons. The staff does a good job of chasing them away, but while we were there, some guests fed them, which caused quite a stir. The fish at John's Fish market is extremely fresh. We can see why they want an award for 2025.... It's a bit of a gritty fish market hang out. It's been here forever, however , we just came in here because we were going to get a coffee at Cocoa Bloom. The fish and chips are quite good . And I had a Seabass taco. A fun way to enjoy freshly caught fish. I ordered the 2 piece fish and chips boat (alaskan cod and shoestring french fries). The batter is crispy with a good flavor to it. The fish is fresh - I loved it. The tartar sauce is made well - I really liked the seasoning and sweetness to it. With the crispy fries, the 2 piece boat was the right size for me. Other choices of fish available for the fish and chips are listed on the menu. I'm thinking about trying halibut the next time I'm here. Sitting on the patio, feeling the breeze, and having fish and chips with a Mexican coke makes for a really nice time. The service was very good, too. read more

Went there for a dinner last Fri night. The whole harbor was abuzz that night due to Xmas boat parade...of course it's the holiday season in general, and it was Friday night ! I got there a half-hour before they close (that night last call was 8:45) and ordered a Halibut dinner with fries and coleslaw, and enjoyed a split of Sauvignon Blanc before and during the meal. It is a paper plate and plastic silverware place, which I'm fine with. It never bothered the Crab Cooker in Newport, and they have been around FOREVER! Halibut was nicely grilled, fries were thin and delicious, coleslaw was fresh and crisp. I must come back for their famous Fish & Chips. Kinda picky about tartar sauce-their's was very good. I've never felt the need to write a review on a place, whether my experience was good or bad. I understand that sometimes things happen. But with this place, I feel there's a need to speak up. Today, 04/19/26, We ordered three different fish and chips meals and one fish burrito. First, we received our drinks, and my wife noticed a black hair (didn't look human but hey what do I know) hanging from the rim of my cup. I initially shrugged it off and said, "Hey, it's just one hair, no biggie." Then our food arrived. As we were eating, we kept finding black hairs in the fish breading, sauces, and even on the fries. At that point, I told my family to stop eating because it honestly seemed like someone's cat or dog was running rampant in the kitchen. I politely called over our server and said, "Hey, I don't want to be a bug, but we've found multiple hairs throughout all of our meals." He responded, "Oh my, no way. Can I take that to show them?" I agreed. He came back with the check--nearly $90--and said, "So sorry about that, the drinks are on me." Mind you, all we got in drinks were a water, small Sprite, milk, and one Coke. I paid the bill and left, deciding I would never come back. I would have left it at that, but at around 9:00 PM tonight, I started feeling extremely sick--profusely sweating and doing everything I could to keep my stomach from spilling out. Jon's is and will always be our go to for fish and chips. We have come busy days, and slow days, but every time we sit outside with a cold ice tea and a corona we are happy. Jimmy buffet on their radio, the sound of the harbor, nothing beats it. The service is patio service, not normally dining. Some people complaining about wait times clearly don't go enough to see it's usually a couple of sweet kids handling the crowds and some times it gets busy! We have waited an hour for our food and the sweet waiter brought us some chowder to hold us over and apologized for the wait. But we are so blessed to be waiting on delicious food while being ocean front. We love it here and hope it's here to stay. People want to keep the Dana Point harbor charm? Support your local spots. We ordered the fried and grilled Jon's Combo, grilled Red Snapper catch, and clam chowder. Since they were closing soon and it was a Sunday night, they were running out of a few ingredients towards the end - which Seabass, our server, was super communicative and helpful with! He helped us replace some ingredients that were short with extra shrimp and fries and made sure we were full and taken care of. Super thankful for this team for their service! I brought my friend for her birthday lunch as this is where she wanted to eat so we both had the two piece halibut fish and chips and ice teas . We went on a Saturday at 11 AM and was sat down on a two seater table and we had to wait for our drinks over 20 plus mins then we finally got our food which was fine - just could have used our $5.50 drink a few mins after ordering not 20 mins later ( sorry ). The fried fish had no seasoning so it went well with their tartar sauce which gave it more flavor. I had the fries, but the coleslaw might have been a better choice. It's very filling and heavy. I was hungry and the 2-piece made me full. If you are to share with someone else, you can get the 4-piece. There is plenty of outside seating and they let you choose where to sit. My favorite place to eat in Dana Point Harbor is Jon's Fish Market; a true fish market and fish stand. The fish market is stocked with fresh for sale as well as smoked salmon, smoked swordfish and sometimes smoked ahi also for sale. They offer to take the skin off the fish and remove bones for you when you order the fresh fish. I ordered the smoked salmon and it is absolutely delicious! It is brined in salt and honey for 18 hours and smoked for three hours....and they do this every day. If you love smoked fish and or fresh fish you should do yourself a favor and go to Jon's Fish Market. In addition to the market, there are food items for sale. I love the fish and chips but I request halibut rather than the cod. The portions are huge! My friend and I share a two piece fish and chips and it is plenty since it also comes with a generous portion of fries and coleslaw. Today ordered the four piece and took home half of the food. Sorry but I didn't take a picture, but it is definitely a very large portion of fish and chips! I had the Fish N' Chips and fried zucchini along with a burrito that I forgot the name of. The burrito was decent. The fries were a bit lacking but the cruchiness of the Cod really made up for it. Fried zucchini was alright, though it isn't something I'd go out of my way to order again. Service could be better. We were checked up on once during our entire meal. We ended up getting the water container left by the front table because no one was stopping by to give us a refill of water.
