I've been coming here for years now. My mom always preferred this place over Choong Hwa Won...and you can never disregard a mother's opinion when it comes to food. Yes, its never as packed as the other Korean/Chinese restaurants but I've always enjoyed my meals. I just had the spicy pork tang soo yook the other day and it was hot, crispy and plenty abundant. Jja jang myun was not too greasy, hot and also plenty abundant. I used to get the half jja jjang myun and half fried rice (or udong) lunch special. So convenient when you want a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Don't expect 5 star customer service though. They're Korean, enough said. Just eat and go on the rest of your day. :P Oh, and definitely not an easy find, being behind Wells Fargo and all. Marathoning through modern Korean dramas may lead to a side effect of cravings for Korean-Chinese comfort food. Therefore, when it inevitably does arrive, my dining companion and I drive to Joong Mi to enjoy excellent renditions of the classics (Jjajang Myun and Jjam Ppong). With large menu of Korean and Korean-Chinese selections, Joong Mi's signature dishes are the half-and-half bowls to enjoy twice the variety. Our go-to dishes are Samseon Gan Jjajang Myeon (noodles with fermented black bean sauce made with seafood) and Jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup). We order the former whole and the latter as a combination with Tang Soo Yook (batter-fried beef in sweet and sour sauce). The noodles are full, fresh, and lively, perfect for the hearty jjajang sauce and the decongesting jjampong soup. As the protein complement to the starches, Tang Soo Yook is strips of beef fried to a nice poofy crisp and in a tart, lightly sweet sauce. Like a Korean-Chinese counterpart to the popular dumpling-centric China Bistro, Joong Mi is a little gem of a diner that makes really well-prepared food made with pride in a humble space (basement of office building just to the east of the more well-known 24 hour Yechon), pleasant service, and affordable prices to match (especially with a Groupon). Yes, it is hard to find as the entrance is on the west side of the building just north of the one facing Little River Turnpike and housing Wells Fargo Bank. This place is a little bit difficult to find. Off Little River Turnpike behind the Wells Fargo building, it is down some stairs in the basement of the building in the back. I've been coming here for several years for the jja jjang myun. It's been a while since I've been back and I've been getting my JJM fix out in Centreville due to convenience. I stopped by here the other day since I was in the area and remembered why I used to frequent this place. Service is friendly and the servers English is actually pretty good. The JJM comes out in a nice big bowl. The bowl was very pleasing to me. Sometimes there's a bowl or a cup shape that just makes the food feel better... this is one of those bowls. Weird. But it's true. The JJM sauce is flavored great (not too salty, not too watery) and the noodles are the big and fat ones. The noodles are nice and springy in consistency and give the perfect noodle chew (is there such a thing). The potatoes and pork are also a lot better than the competitions. I take away one star because I've never really had anything else here. I had a spoonful of the jampong and it was mediocre at best. If going only for JJM, however, I'd rate it 5 stars. read more

This is one of my favorite places to eat or take out in Annandale. I haven't been in a while but there was only 1 waitress at the time and she was running so many tables without even catching her breath. The owner is not fair to the worker. The food is good here. I get the seafood ganjajang. It's a weird location though. It's in a basement. You have to walk down the stairs or take the elevator to get to this place. Joong Mi / Lunchtime / Jenny's Deli is...interesting. It is located in the basement of an office building which is behind a Mcdonald's. The decor is plain and outdated but hey, there's a flat screen tv in there. We found out about this place because of the Groupon deal. Many menu items are in the $$ range so having the deal definitely made it worth a try. The fried dumplings were actually some of the crispiest and tastiest mandu that I've had in Annandale. The soon tofu soup had a watered down flavor and was nowhere near Korean-style spicy. My star rating reflects the service more than anything. There was only 1 other table of people in the place and our server seemed frazzled. I used to go to this place 20 years ago with my mom when we lived in Annandale so when I found out that they were still open I was so excited. I took a friend of mine here for lunch and I ordered the jajang mien and the fried dumplings. Both were just as good as I remember them. Their jampong is still amazing too. This place looks almost sketchy from the outside but it is an excellent hole-in-the-wall place. It's located in the basement of an office building so you go down the stairs to get to it. I grew up in Clifton, VA and my go-to place for Korean Black Bean noodles was just a mile away and it was delicious!!!! Since moving out of Clifton a decade ago, I have been trying to find a new spot to satisfy my Black Bean noodle cravings. Please message me if you know of any places near McLean! I refuse to suffer the traffic on 66 to get to Clifton... My sister and I came here for lunch on a Friday and thanks to the Yelp reviews, we were able to find it without a problem! We were seated immediately and our server/owner? came to bring us drinks and take our order as soon as we were seated. We appreciated this because we were in a hurry. Unfortunately her english was not too good so she was unable to understand my question, "Do you still offer a combination bowl?" I didn't see this anywhere on the menu and when she didn't understand me, we decided to just order Fried Dumplings to start and the Black Bean Noodles. Food came out quickly and LOOKED amazing. I repeat LOOKED amazing. Never judge a book by it's cover....the dumplings, while huge, had no flavor. The meat filling was bland and the sauce it came with needed more sugar because it tasted like straight soy sauce. The Noodles tasted fresh but the sauce tasted like nothing....bland and missing the authentic flavor that I am used to. Great traditional Korean-Chinese style restaurant that is legitimately "hidden in the cut." This is one of those places that most people wouldn't know about unless you know someone Korean who will take you here. Big fan of this place. Just goes to show that if you want to find the hidden gems, you gotta ask the Korean people about the places us non-Koreans don't know about. They are located next to Breeze bakery in Annandale, and the restaurant is in the basement of what seems like an old office building. They use alot of traditional asian tables, where the edges go deep down, so for a really tall person like myself, it was quite uncomfortable, but that is a very minor concern. I got the jajangmyeon and tangsooyook combination, which is crispy pork in sweet and sour sauce. The pork was VERY crispy and freshly made. The sauce is very good and compliments the fried pork well. They add some very crispy and fresh veggies as well that gives the pork some freshness. Probably one of the best tangsooyook I've ever had. The jajangmyeon was very delicious. It had very good flavors and not overpowering at all. The sauce had the perfect consistency and complemented the noodles very well, and at the same time the sauce was not overly salty. Very good and probable one of the best I've had. The other dish was be jajangmyeon and jjamppong combo. The jajangmyeon is the same is the previous dish but the jjamppong is a spicy seafood soup that uses the same noodles as the jajangmyeon. The jjamppong had the perfect amount of spiciness but at the same it was a tab bit bland. I wish there was a bit more flavor in the broth. But overall it was still serviceable. This place is truly a hidden gem, and worth the try! You just have to go on an adventure to find the restaurant. read more

(Okay, we're all in agreement that this in Joongmi Restaurant, I don't know why it would be listed as Lunchtime on Yelp when it doesn't say "Lunchtime" anywhere at the restaurant?) I was SERIOUSLY craving jampong (jjam bbong) the past 2 days, so I used my handy dandy Yelp app to find this spot. First of all, it can be a little tricky to find. If you follow Google Maps, you'll end up in a parking lot behind an office building, staring at a McDonalds and wondering if Yelp has led you astray. (Sacre bleu!) BUT, if you follow your belly and drive around the office building, you'll see a sign proclaiming "JOONGMI" and find this Korean-Chinese restaurant in the basement. It's definitely got that Chinese restaurant feel, decor-wise. Not QUITE a Chinese restaurant, but definitely a Korean-Chinese one, if that makes any sense. I immediately ordered my jampong and my boyfriend ordered one of their combos - jjajangmyun + fried rice. The lady suggested I upgrade my jampong for $1 to get more yummy seafood, so I did! She was really helpful overall. She also suggested some appetizers for us but I just wanted noodles. I'm not used to getting that kind of attention or suggestion at Korean restaurants unless I ask for it, so that was pretty nice. Any previous reviews stating that the menu or servers are not suited for English-only customers are by now outdated as the menu is in full English and the servers speak it as well. Little spots of kimchi and danmuji (yellow pickled radishes) and onion were brought out and I eagerly waited. Some reviews said the food took a really long time, but I found it was about average. YUM JAMPONG CRAVING SATISFIED. It was very tasty. I don't know how it usually tastes at other places, as the reviews said the broth was more flavorful than people are used to? This is exactly how I have had jampong in the past, so I was a really happy camper. You really do get a LOT of seafood with that $1 upgrade as well. I had something like 6-7 mussels in my broth along with shrimp and calamari. Lots of good stuff. It was a struggle to finish that $10 bowl of noodles. My boyfriend also struggled to finish his portion. Our servers were also really accommodating in refilling our teas without us having to ask and in bringing me more danmuji when I asked for it. Lunchtime serves Korean Chinese food. And what a combo it is! So much flavor from both countries combined into a dish. The Korean Chinese cuisine derived from traditional Chinese cuisine but has been influenced by local ingredients in Korea . Korean Chinese cuisine appear to some as being more Korean than Chinese. I'm so glad I tried out this quaint little spot in the basement of a business building. Older Korean ladies run this place, so the service may be a little slow, but they are so nice and sweet. They check on you frequently to make sure that you are satisfied with the food. This place may not have hit home with me due to the amount of grease and fried food they serve. But it surely is on my list of places to try again. One thing that may help their non-Korean customers is if they had a better description of their dishes on their vast menu. I suppose that could have helped me make a better selection of my food since waitresses were unable to help. This restaurant is such a hole-in-the-wall place! It does seem a bit sketch going down the stairwell to get to the restaurant, but don't let the interior designing (or lack thereof) fool you. The food is ah-mazing. I always get the Jjampong and Sweet and Sour Pork. The SSP is lightly breaded and light and crispy. The meat to breading proportion is perfect and the Jjampong has a certain fiery spiciness that I crave and cannot find in other Korean-Chinese restaurants. I had Korean-style Chinese food before in New York City, but was underwhelmed. However I decided to give this cuisine another try after receiving a coupon offer for Joongmi. Like the other reviews say, the place is hidden in an office building, with an entrance that doesn't face Little River Turnpike. The English name is now "Jenny's Deli/Joongmi" and the space itself appears to be a converted 1970's office basement cafeteria. I wonder if during the week they just serve the usual deli sandwiches? I dropped in with my girlfriend for lunch on a Sunday. There were only two other diners when we arrived, none of us Korean. Menu helpfully is bilingual and one of the two waitresses spoke English as well. I got the jajangmyun/jjampong split bowl that other reviewers liked. This is really the way to go if you want to sample dishes. My girlfriend got a full bowl of what is basically jjampong without the hot sauce. I'm not knowledgeable enough about Korean cuisine to know the name. The noodles are the big success for me. Previously, I was distracted by how jjajangmyun was different from its' Chinese inspiration zha jiang mian. The noodles are so good I didn't mind the difference this time and enjoyed the dish on its' own merits. This was also my first crack at jjampong and I found it delightful. The, um, non-spicy version my girlfriend got is also very good and pairs well with the gochujang boosted scallion pancakes that are part of the appetizer course. Stone pot had no meat in it at all strictly veggie such as mushroom, sliced cucumber, and soy bean. It may have several pieces of bulgogi or it may be replaced with a small portion of ground beef. There were only 2 items for ban chan kimchi & sliced yellow pickled turnip any other place you'll have at least 4. Never seen anything like it, the server asked my friend for more tip money she said 18% because it was dinner. Huh? It's up to the customer if the service is to their liking and in this case if I liked the food or not. A lot of cutting corners such as no meat in stone pot only vegetables and no hot tea instead of cold tap water. Weird questions like are you paying cash or card when I asked for a to go bag. Why does it matter either way? Will you hand me a container for the leftovers if I pay with a Debit card? Too many other Korean restaurants in K-town to enjoy the whole experience. It boils down to the nitty gritty. If you provide an all around pleasant setting (clean, service, quality) you'll get that back and more than 18%. Think about it. read more

It's been awhile since I've been here. Came today b/c I remembered how good the food was the last time I've been here (probably more than a year ago) and it's as if the whole place has done a complete 360... I got the combo of seafood noodle soup and the black bean noodles and they were both extremely bland. I also ordered spicy rice cakes with noodles and the noodles were the same kind as the ones in my two main entrees. The rice cake dish had more red peppers than rice cakes and fish cakes combined. That dish was definitely not worth $12. What happened? This place used to be so good. A hidden gem, but now it's a dead mine. There used to be so many people dining in but it was dead today. Did I miss something? The service was not that good too. They were extremely friendly, but constantly walked away before my table finished talking as if they were busy when we were the only table besides the one behind us. They forgot a soup we ordered, mixed up our to-go and dine in requests, and didn't refill our waters. Plus when they added a soup we didn't want, they tried to charge us! Unbelievable! We constantly had to call them to refill our side dishes as well and they would forget which ones we asked for. Their heads were somewhere else. Won't be going back there. They were perfection every time. Even for my six year old pallet, I knew no one else could ever be as good as you at the time. Now that I'm older, I think it's time we part ways. No... It's not me, it's you. You know how with age you're supposed to get better and wiser? But it seems the opposite has happened. You're overpriced and I can't even say your food is mediocre. I got my usual, pork ja jang. It was 95% vegetable and 5% pork, if that. Why?!? When did our relationship come to this? You know I like to have a good ratio of pork to vegetables. As for your employees, the ladies working your floor are nice... for the most part. Maybe they were friendly because I look like a cute little pushover Asian girl. But little do they know... I see right through them. They're eyes drunken with dollar signs. They're just like those fake friends that will only talk to you if you have something they want. Now this is what I call "hole-in-the-wall." The door to the basement-level establishment is difficult to find, especially in the dark. Once you find the small stream of light escaping from the otherwise almost pitch-dark parking lot, you'll find yourself nervously negotiating the narrow stairway towards a small, closed door. Once you muster up the courage to open the door, however, the bright interior is in shocking contrast with the suspicious exterior of this place. In fact, I even felt a tinge of disappointment that the suspenseful build-up culminated into what appeared to be an all-too legitimate looking restaurant. The quintessential dilemma that has plagued Korean-Chinese diners for generations: Jjajang (black bean noodles) or Jjambbong (spicy seafood noodles)? Stick with the noodles, or do we have enough people to share an order of tangsu-yuk (battered and fried pork in glutinous sauce)? Are they going to throw in a side of dumplings with my orders? Lunchtime offers a solution: split bowls with half-servings for the chronically indecisive. Before I get to the food, the service was incredibly show and inattentive. I was convinced that the only explanation for the fact that no one had attended to us during the considerable amount of time we'd been sitting was that this was a self-service place. So I found my way to the kitchen to place our order when the owner(?) basically waved me off with an "I'll get to you." Having practically memorized the menu by that time, we had our orders ready when she finally decided to pay us a visit at our table. After more waiting (exacerbated by hunger and the rising sense of anticipation/agitation whenever the lady appeared with a bowl of food that ended up not being ours), she finally came up to us, and asked "what was your order again?" God help me. I really tried to stay angry, I really did. But when the food did come out eons later, I couldn't help but smile. The food isn't awesome, slightly above average at best. But really, you can't go wrong with even mediocre jjajang/jjambbong, which I'm sure derives most of its taste from MSG anyway. I know Jangwon also offers split bowls at comparative prices and a higher-quality atmosphere, but the entire experience of walking across a sketchy parking lot to a tiny side door of a building to sit in front of a TV playing "America's Got Talent" with two split-bowls of food is just so ridiculously awesome that the experience kind of makes up for the snail-paced service. read more

After hearing RAVES from my work manager (korean) about basically, the most amazing mandoo and jambbong here...I had to come try it today, especially after reading all of these awesome reviews from yelp. We ordered the 7 piece yaki-mandu...yes, they are HUGE just like everyone has mentioned....but flavorless. The "meat" or mixture of meat and noodles and vegetables were very lightly packed and almost didn't even taste like any meat. This was probably the best part of the meal. For our entrees, we ordered half jambbong/half spicy tangsuyook and half jambbong/half jjajjamyung. We got: Half jambbong/half tangsuyook and one FULL jjajjamyung. I told my bf it was fine b/c he could just share my food with me because I was already stuffed from the mandoo. The jjajjamyung had NO flavor whatsoever. Please note that portions ARe big for these dishes as well...but this spot is solely quantity over quality. the sauce had NO flavor whatsoever and they put this cabbage vegetable like TONS of it mixed in...I did not enjoy it, but wasn't going to complain with their different way of cooking... The jambbong had lots of noodles (which is sad b/c I just really like the soup and I basically only eat the vegetables and seafood) and barely any seafood AND they did not have kimchi in the soup at all and very few vegetables...in fact they had again, lots of hard cabbage. The worst is YET to come...the tangsuyook...oh my god...what an abomination..................these pieces of "pork" were SOooO heavily breaded when I took my first bite I thought it was all dough...It mostly is. This place is so stingy, barely puts ANY meat in and tries to mask it with tons and tons of breading. It was so utterly bad, my bf started peeling the fried dough off to try to avoid eating so much of it and we would rarely find pieces of pork or just ended up finding SOLELY just pork fat. Worst experience ever.. We waited Jajangmyun for 40mins, and asked why it took so long compared to other tables. But staffs in there, they didn't even say anything, any explanation. So I definitely started off on the wrong foot with this place. As the official sherpa for Korean restaurants at the office I was a little confuzzled at where exactly I enter into this restaurant. There was one door that had the name of the restaurant but it looked decidedly... unwelcoming. 10 feet further was another door that was propped open. You know those elevator's that come out in horror movies that always creak and shake and then the lights get cut off and you are stuck there until whatever horrible monster/villian/killer comes to get you? I dunno if it is because there are only two floors but the fact that the elevator was calling the shots was mildly disturbing. The door opened .... and we were in the kitchen. Seriously. And there was this little kid running around with a toy airplane. At least we got to see the cooking process in action! Health Inspection: A After walking through the kitchen and surprising the waitress from behind, we were seated and our lunch began. They offer several combinations of dishes. They have a traditional "Koreanized Chinese dish" menu, but your best off sticking to the half & half combinations. There is a choice of Jja Jaang Myun (Black Sauce Noodles) or Jjam Ppong (Spicy seafood noodles) with Tang Soo Yook (deep fried pork in sweet & tangy sauce), MONSTER DUMPLINGS (seriously, these could solve world hunger) or fried rice as the second half of the dish. I personally go for the Jjamp Ppong, its nice and spicy with plenty of noodles and seafood with the monster dumplings. Sometimes its nice to get the sweet & tangy pork to offset the heat. For a dollar more you can get both the black sauce noodles and the spicy noodles. They don't skimp on portions and the place is more than reasonable. Completely mediocre. Like many reviews have said, this place is JUST OK, but nothing to go out of your way for. Came with a $20 voucher to give the place a try and there's nothing worth coming back for. Their entree dish was larger than expected (which was nice - but only made sense for the price). Most entrees priced over $15. Was ticked off a bit by the service since it took our waiter forever (who had disappeared somewhere in the back) to come give us the check. Never came by for anything... to ask how we were doing or refill drinks? and we were the ONLY customers in the restaurant (around 10pm). read more

My favorite place in Annandale for Chinese Korean food. I read most of the bad reviews on this place and a lot of them were based on their Groupon experiences. I can say that the jjajangmyun and jjampong is easily the best in the area. Also, the waitress in the evening shift is the sweetest lady. You really can't beat a $5.99 jjajangmyun for lunch. I believe it's $6.99 for dinner. They also don't skip on the portion just because it's so cheap. The sauce is flavorful and you can actually see the large pieces of pork and potatoes. Also not watery, which a lot of JJM places mess up on. Even though JJM is usually my go to dish at a Chinese Korean restaurant, I think their jjampong is my favorite here. I'm guessing they wok cook the seafood first which brings a thick smokey flavor that goes really well with the spicy soup. The soup has a decent kick which I love. Give this place a try! read more

3.5 stars. As the other reviewers stated it is hard to find in the Wells Fargo office building half a block down from cafe breeze and yechon. It is down the stairs in a sketchy looking hallway. The inside is actually quite decent when you get down there. Unlike the other reviewers, the service was great despite our inability to speak Korean. Granted it was dead in there that Friday night so it helped. The seafood noodle soup bowl was amazing and you could tell the noodles were quality. The best thing by far. The boneless Korean chicken wings were very good also but a little gloopy and not as good as the two newer Korean Chinese places in Annandale. The black noodle dish was mediocre but we ordered the cheap 5.99 one and should have had the seafood one which is why I'm giving it a high review. Overall not quite as good as the other two Korean Chinese places but almost and holds up well. The seafood noodle dish alone is worth the visit. Or if you want to impress your out of town guests or non Koreans with your knowledge if hole in he wall spots. read more

I have so many check-ins here for a reason. This place serves one of the best Korean meals ever! The place itself is in a very odd location- it's a cafeteria underneath an office building. The place is known for their jamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) and their jiajia noodles (a Chinese-Korean fusion dish with black sauce, meat, seafood and vegetables). The portions are incredibly huge and more likely than not, you'll have to take the rest of it home in a doggie bag. The dumplings are pretty good too- very similar to the Chinese style dumplings. The only negative is that the service is slow. So slow in fact, that I would recommend you not going in starving. You'll have such a long wait. I've been here 5+ times and each time I have to wait around 15-20 minutes to get served. It's not crowded, but I'm assuming the food takes time to prepare. Also, the staff doesn't really speak English, so you won't really notice many non-Koreans here. However, all the negatives don't really outweigh the positives, so I'm just going to take off one star. It's still the best Korean restaurant I've been to in Annandale. read more

customer service (or speaking english) is not their forte, but who cares when you can get a huge bowl of handmade noodles prepared in two different flavors?! for my jjampong & jjajjangmyun fix, i beeline for this place. i wish there were more options for this chinese-korean cuisine, but i don't know where they are out here. i've already tried jang won restaurant in annandale --- eh, it's ok. preparation-wise, i would go to lunchtime first. great... now i am craving noodles again. read more

I remember this used to be the secret "it" spot among koreans who looked for some good Korean-Chinese food. It's unfortunate how the taste has not been maintained after the years. The food seemed pre-made in a large batch with no significant great flavors they used to have. I wouldn't describe the food terrible, but I'll probably look for other Korean-Chinese places from now on. read more

Joongmi - Tang jja myun (top) & jjam jja myun (bottom) - Korean Near Me - Annandale, Virginia

Hole in the wall place. My Korean friend took us after a LONG and HOT day at Kings Dominion. Great part of this place is its open until 11pm, so you can get your late night eats. Love that its in a building basement. Gives it a ghetto but authentic feel. Menu is straightforward, american chinese and korean specialties. I love the um ma stands and waits for you to decide on your order. Gotta love the split bowls here - you can't beat getting the best of both worlds. The serving sizes here are RIDICULOUS, so be ready to share whatever you order. Everything is also SUPER affordable (under $5 for a bowl of ja jiang mien!) We had the steamed dumplings to start, which went down like butter. Super soft, super fresh, filled with pork, vermicelli, and green onion goodness (thank god they have black vinegar on the table, completes my experience). Had the jap chae with fried rice (the regular jap chae is the size of my arm), very good, not too greasy, perfect noodles. Had the split bowl ja jiang mien fried rice, very solid, with pork sausages in the fried rice (and not greasy AT ALL). Also had the seafood combo ja jiang mien, which is filled with pieces of squid on top of the pork deliciousness. Awesome serving size as we split that among two people. My only disappointment was the Tang So Yuk. I love Super H Marts version, and this one pales in comparison. Maybe it was late night and they got a little lazy, but I found the pork to be overly breaded, the sauce to be overly honey-ed and not sweet nor sour enough to what I'm used to. In fact, it wasn't salty enough either, so it turned out to be just a bland honey flavored fried pork dish. So sad. Four of us, massive amounts of food for about $20 a person. Really solid. If you can find your way into the actual restaurant (it's off Little River in a brown building, basement floor!), the food is pretty decent. I first came here on a friend's groupon deal, and we enjoyed a variety of foods. I really liked the tang siu yook entree. but be warned: IT'S HUGE! the ja jjang myun was also largely portioned. I got the combo of those two items and ended up with a huge amount of leftovers. The place is incredibly well priced (esp. those combo deals) and the food is very good. However, if you aren't korean or don't have a korean friend in the group, you will get minimal service. We tried asking the waitress if the entrees came with rice and if not, could we have a bowl on the side. in response, she said "rice? rice?", smiled, and walked away. :P Bottom line: the food is good, it's really well priced, portions are huge and it's generally pretty quiet. If you're looking to get a quick lunch in (or if Yechon down the street is popping), Lunchtime (JoongMi) hits the spot! read more
