It was a super large portion and seafood was so fresh, it was crispy and green onions were extremely fresh!!! Clam kalgusu didn't have many clams (only like 4). The squid stir fry also had those super fresh green onions, a bit spicy but that makes the dish amazing. A bit pricey but overall, high quality food and service. Some of the banchan like the kimchi was okay but the spicy peppers and seaweed soup made up for it! The other banchan sides were pretty good! Highly recommend the seafood pancake omg!!!! As far as authentic Korean food in the DMV goes, To Sok Jip offers a pretty good experience. If you're in the mood for hot Korean soups and stews, this restaurant offers a quality selection. However, this is most definitely not a Korean BBQ restaurant and their non-fish meat options are limited. I ordered a somewhat expensive dolsot bibimbap and was disappointed by the lack of proper meat (I received minced beef/pork, couldn't tell what it was). We ordered a variety of dishes to share, including fried pork dumplings, seafood pancake, bulgogi, bossam, bibimbap, grilled mackerel, and a soup. Even with a full house on a Friday night, the food came out quick. The dumplings were massive, and the seafood pancake was my favorite item with its generous filling and crispy edges. The bossam and bibimbap were both solid choices as well. The bulgogi, however, was a bit underwhelming and could have used more flavor. First time at this place and not impressed with the food at all. My 2 star review is solely on the food taste coz service was good, fast and friendly. Starting with the hot pot or stew, taste was ok on the salty side, needed little more liquid. The brown rice was not edible, was deep purple not brown rice and so very sticky that didn't come out easily and needed an effort even with a spoon. All assortments tasted the same. Tosokjip is one of the most authentic Korean restaurants in Northern Virginia. The staff is always friendly and the food comes out relatively fast, which is always a plus! We ordered the budaejjigae (Army stew) and it was perfect for the cold weather! It's packed with sausages, rice cakes, ramen noodle, kimchi, and more. The serving size is massive, so my husband and I always end up taking some home. I really like that they use a little coal fire underneath, so the soup stays warm the whole time. One of my favorite Korean spots in Annandale for comfort food! The staff are very kind and attentive. I enjoy the complimentary banchan here. They have another location called DANJI in Centreville too! My favorite dishes are Godeungeo Gui (grilled mackerel), Dak Kalguksu (hand-rolled noodle soup), Bossam, and Sangye Tang (ginseng chicken soup). I will always get the grilled mackerel. It comes with Jjigae/soup (choose between soybean, riceh soybean, and seaweed), but I don't usually care for it so I always pick seaweed since it's good for you. The Samgye Tang and Dak Kalguksu are a must since they're very hearty and good for you especially when you're feeling under the weather. Same with the mackerel! read more

I went to Tosokjip mainly for the bossam because my friend said it was the best thing ever. I've never really liked bossam, but I decided to give it a fair try anyway. It was still just okay to me, but that might honestly just be because I'm not a huge bossam person in general. The meat was tender and everything was prepared well, just not my personal favorite. What really stood out to me was the galbi tang. It was good. The broth was rich and comforting, and I literally drank every drop. The seafood pancake was ok, but I never liked seafood pancakes either. The ambience feels very Korean. They give you bottled water. Came here on a cold winter Friday looking for some comfort food and protein. We've been to the old To Sok Jip before it burned down and had great memories there; we were happy to give the new location a shot. There was a bit of a language barrier when I was asking questions to the wait staff, but totally understandable. It also took about 10min before our appetizers came out which was unusual - they're usually pretty prompt. Besides those two things, everything else was excellent. We didn't wait long for our two dishes: samgaetang - chicken ginseng soup and yukgaejang - spicy beef stew. The yukgaejang was really spicy, but was super delicious. The chicken ginseng soup truly hit the spot - if you order this, be sure to add in your chicken seasoning as a topper! Though neither my partner nor I were sick, we both agreed that both soups would be a lifesaver if we were congested because they were opening up our nasal passages! Pajeon is crispy with lots of seafood. All the soups are also super flavorful and delicious. They also embody that quick&fast culture of Koreans. Their service is super fast (within 15 mins, we had all our food). The ambiance is more casual, without any separated seating, which reflects their more of a "family style" food. I have never felt as relieved and overjoyed as I did when To Sok Jip finally reopened its doors! Home to some of the DMV area's best Korean food, To Sok Jip's new location continues to feature a rockstar menu of traditional Korean fare, including stews, grilled fish / meats, and so much more. I visited their new location with a group of six, the perfect size for one of their booths! We got a giant spread of food to share, including their bossam, hameul pajeon, grilled squid, fried yellow croaker with doenjang jjigae, and maeuntang. The group couldn't stop raving about their bossam -- the pork was perfectly tender and packed with flavor, and it paired beautifully with the delightfully crisp napa and fresh kimchi. The cabbage, garlic, and jalapenos were all super fresh, and the ssamjang and saewoo jeot were the perfect complements to the already flavorful pork. Bossam is one of those dishes that looks simple but can be challenging to execute well, but To Sok Jip crushed it! While the bossam was certainly the centerpiece of the table, the rest of the dishes were outstanding and equally deserving of praise. The hameul pajeon came out next, and...wow. This perfectly crispy pancake was absolutely loaded with seafood! The green onions helped to cut through the dough, and it wasn't overly greasy or heavy, as many pajeon can be. The rest of our seafood dishes came out together, alongside a few sides of perfectly cooked purple rice and another round of banchan. The squid was grilled, then stir-fried with a gochujang-based sauce and green onions that added a great savory, lightly spicy punch. The squid was perfectly cooked -- it had a good bite but wasn't too chewy or tough, and it had a great layer of smokiness from the grill. The yellow croaker was fried to perfection, with an amazingly crispy skin but tender, succulent interior. It had a pretty light flavor, but that made it the perfect accompaniment to the umami-packed, soul-warming doenjang jjigae. The maeuntang was equally umami-packed and soul-warming, with a great level of spice and a ton of tender cod. This is generally a less popular soup choice and a few folks in the group were originally hesitant to order it, but I think To Sok Jip may have successfully converted them into maeuntang promoters! All in all, I can't say enough good things about To Sok Jip! Their food is delicious, authentic, and warms the soul -- you truly can't go wrong with a single thing on their menu! To top it off, the staff is super friendly and give this no-frills, traditional Korean restaurant some extra charm. The outside of the restaurant looked pretty cool with the different screens and images while the inside looked more like a traditional korean restaurant. My friend and I shared the bossam and kimchi jigae. The bossam serving was huge and can definitely share 2-4 people! The meat was fatty and delicious and putting it in a cabbage wrap with the other toppings...chefs kiss! Kimichi jigae was also pretty good and has a decent spiciness to it. This is one of my go to places in Annandale for Authentic Korean food and have been at least 2 times since the new location opened. I've ordered the seafood pancake, knife cut noodles with chicken soup, and bossam. There is a variety of side dishes to complement the meal. We started off with the seafood pancake. It's HUGE, enough to share with 4-6 people. They don't skimp out on the seafood and its perfectly crispy and chewy at the same time. We always get the bossam as well. I love the thick cuts of pork belly, combined with the kimchi radish, a bit of raw garlic, all wrapped in cabbage. What a perfect combo. I also got the chicken knife cut noodles. I love the chewiness of the noodles and chicken broth. It's such a comfort food. It's always been a great experience at To Sok Jip. I always come here when I'm craving solid korean food. read more

The interior looked modern and new, and it was packed with people. So our group of 5 had to wait for about 10 minutes before we were seated. We didn't have to wait too long for our food to come out (it did come out one by one, though). While waiting, we enjoyed a variety of banchans (they gave us two sets of 7 different banchans). I enjoyed the kimchi, beansprouts, acorn jelly and fishcakes the most. GRILLED MACKEREL WITH RICE AND SOUP (고등어구이 & 찌개) - 17.99 If you are able to come for lunch (on the weekdays?), it's 13.99, which is a good deal. Along with a mackerel (sliced in half with all the bones and without the head or tail), you can choose a soup: soybean paste soup, rich soybean paste soup (a stronger version, I'm guessing) or seaweed soup. I've personally never had seaweed soup before (no one has made it on my birthday, I guess) and don't usually see it on the menu, I wanted to try it. It was a light, salty clear soup with lots of seaweed in it. Definitely felt clean and it was an enjoyable, simple soup. The mackerel itself was phenomenal. I didn't think the bones were too annoying to pick out. I love the simple and salty flavors of the fish, and the skin was crispy and flavorful. It is expensive for what it is, but I don't know how to make it myself, so I'm not going to complain too much. Very homey option, I'd recommend. This used to be my favorite home style Korean food in NoVA since 2003. Given the recent move due to an unfortunate fire, I was hesitant to visit the new place but seeing all the good reviews, I was excited to try on my way to DCA. In sum, complete disappointment. The cooking staffs are no longer Koreans (which is fine if there is a person to oversee the quality but there wasn't). The food was lacking flavor and that deep "true" Korean food taste. I went with my parents (who are not picky) yet they noticed the difference as well. It was 6pm on Sunday and no customers except two parties. This place used to be 20-30 mins wait regardless of when you visit while they were at their original location. Fish was undercooked and extremely fishy, soup lacked depth/watered down, all their banchans were underwhelming. I really big shame as this was a must stop location in Annandale for me. My dolsot bibimbap was sizzling hot with lots of vegetables and a hot sauce (on the side so you can customize how spicy you want it). Great selection of banchan even when dining alone. Also comes with complimentary seaweed soup. Food was fast. Only thing to note is the dolsot bibimbap is relatively scant on meat portions but there are plenty of vegetables to balance that out. Starting 8 yrs ago, To Sok Jip used to be my favorite restaurant every time we visited my in-laws. We would come here...2-3 times a year, every year, until recently. The food used to be excellent. Full of flavor and umami. We were sad to hear that the original location burned down. Subsequently, they opened a replacement location a block away. Today we tried this new location for the first time. We ordered the seafood pancake (해물파전), cutlass fish with rich soybean paste soup (갈치구이 & 청국장), ground soybean stew (콩비지찌개). The flavors, while all present, was very inadequate. It all tasted bland and lacked the umami that they historically had. This applies to everything we ate, including the side dishes. In addition, one of the pieces of fish was undercooked. The egg sack was still raw. We sent it back. Instead of giving us a new piece, they simply dunked the fish that we had eaten into the oil and over-fried it. Even then, the inside was still raw. They just apologized but didn't do anything else about it. We will not be coming back. read more
