Jorges is the BEST! The California Burrito and Soup are a must. The salsa is great. I cant find a better California Burrito in north county, and trust me, I've tried. I spent my late teens and early twenties eating Mexican food 4 to 5 days a week. Trust me, I've tried almost every spot from Del mar to Oceanside. It can take a while to get your food so, if you can get them to answer the phone, call your order in about 10 to 15 minutes prior to getting there. Apparently, this white girl has a mexican grandma, because the first time I tried this soup (not the Texcoco, the wimpy kind) I felt like I'd come home. It's soooooo good! I get the salsa to take with and dial in how much I want. My husband gets Texcoco and ADDS salsa, so it works for everyone. It has a rich broth with fresh ingredients including big chuncks of avocado, rice, shredded chicken, onions, mmmmm I can still taste it. The guy at the window is friendly and just the right amount of flirty without being creepy. My kids like the horchata. They now take Visa and Mastercard. I noticed the funky ATM machine is no longer in the corner. Also, they're open Sundays until 1:30. Other items on the menu are decent. I haven't tried very many of them. I always come for the soup. Go for the soup. The first time I went here I was debating, small soup? burrito? Then I looked around and noticed most of the patrons were wearing clothes that said they WORKED for a living, and they all had large soups. So there ya go. You will walk again. Your bones will heal. Apparently the chicken soup is the bees knees. This isn't my usual mexican restaurant but I live close by so I make due with it sometimes. I have purchased the vegetarian burrito ($7) a few times and always though it was a good deal. The lettuce they use is green and they add other fresh veggies like cilantro onions and tomatoes. You basically get beans with a nice salad wrapped up in a tortilla . Fast forward to today when I ordered the same thing : IceBerg Lettuce Hardly any cilantro barely any onions The beans looked like they were covered in lard. For $7 I'd rather go to Taco Bell. There is no excuse for pale or lack of vegetables in CA. We grow them here. The difference is a $7 burrito compared to a burrito valued at $3. Will try again at some point. We were in Encinitas and saw the reviews for Jorge's, so we thought we'd try it. Since it was our first time, we inquired about their breakfast burritos. Gus, who took our order, was incredibly friendly and welcoming. He said their breakfast burritos were excellent. We ordered them with bacon and they were awesome! The salsa served on the side was also great. He had us try their chicken soup, too, since it's one of their most popular menu items. The chicken soup was INCREDIBLE. It tastes fresh and healthy. It wasn't overly salty like many restaurant soups are and was extremely flavorful. I saw other reviews that were posted about it being the Mexican version of a Jewish Grandma's chicken soup that heals everything. I think that's probably true. Kind of upsetting. With all the reviews, I figured it'd be a pretty good spot. I was in the area and decided to give it a try. Lots of people coming in to order for lunch so I assumed it'd be a good place. What I really wanted were shrimp tacos in a crunchy shell but they only serve them in a soft shell (I don't know why because when the food came out, it was so hot that I had to wait to eat it and the shrimp fajitas basically melted right through the taco.) The shrimp didn't have much flavor and it cost extra to put cheese and guacamole in it. Why?? Shouldn't that be in there already? Ugh. The side of beans and rice was just okay; no seasoning whatsoever. Kind of disappointing. I was looking to spend around $7 or so but with the cost of the extra ingredients my bill came to a little over $10...for two tacos...not cool. read more

That was a damn good breakfast burrito. Even the vegetarian version was massive. Jorge's is a little strip mall type restaurant that doesn't look like much on the outside (or inside), but they know how to make some solid Mexican food. I hope to return one day. Good stuff. read more

Been coming here for years on Wednesday for the special and after today it will no longer happen. Tried for 30mins to get a phone order and no luck. The phone lines kept ringing and ringing. The soup is by far their best entree item...it's Seinfeld good. The rest of the menu is good, but not great. The prices and portions are fair. The seating is on the smaller side, even for a hole in the wall Mexican establishment. If you're in Encinitas on El Camino Real you could do worse. read more

Today was the worst service I have ever had at Jorge's. The texcoco soup had no heat and the Carne Asada street taco didn't have any onions or cilantro. When I took it back to get the sauce for the soup, the owner argued with me about it having spice then threw the soup out and dished out another container with 4 ladles of sauce(when they normally use 1 ladle) and then said, " is that spicy enough for you". All that I wanted was one ladle in the soup I brought back. After that experience, I won't be going to Jorge's anymore. One star for that experience is one too many. read more

Most of the people that work there are really pleasant except for Jorge's son...he needs to not work...he is just really rude sometimes. Chicken Texcoco Soup is great still. Like the best around. But it just took 45 minutes to get me two small soups. It's soup, you pour it into the container, it shouldn't take longer than scratch made risotto at a fine restaurant to pour my soup. Recommend using the Santa Fe location instead. read more

Now this is serious mexican food. Its all wonderful, the enchiladas, tacos, nachos... but holy canoli its the SOUP you really want. By far the best soup in town. Just last weekend I brought them my own huge pot and the filled it up, with all the sides, for a large party we hosted. The soup was the hit of the party. They are very friendly and aim to be fast, but it is usually very busy. Seating is poor so take it home. Oh, and they never answer the phone so dont count on calling your order in. Bring a paper to read while you wait for your order cause its usually 30 minutes on weekends, and order extra to eat all week. Beware: Some times they can get a little too crazy with the onions. read more

I was pleasantly surprised to read all of the great reviews of Jorge's which is just down the street from where I live. I had been there numerous times and am hooked on their Chilaquiles plate for breakfast-Awesome stuff-I crave it. The reviews were just TOO good to not try the Chicken Soup and the Chicken Mole' too so last week I went there just for the Mole' and Chicken Soup to give my own objective taste test. I am a 23 year Encinitas/Leucadia/Carlsbad resident and 50 year So. Cal. born and raised resident so I've eaten Mexican food my whole life. My first meal experience when I moved here was in Leucadia 23 years ago at La Especial Norte on HWY 101. My friend took me there. The Chicken Soup there was the very best I had ever tasted in my life-Mexican Pennicillin. Chicken, Rice, Tomato, Avocado, Cilantro, and Savory broth. The Avocado and Cilantro are fresh on top. I've had many bowls at home when under the weather. The Mole at La Especial Norte is to die for, and I just ate there 2 weeks ago for the first time in ages. I had the Mole Chicken Enchiladas. So good! SO here is my verdict between Jorge's and La Especial: Chicken Soup - La Especial 5, Jorge's 4.7 Mole - La Especial 5, Jorge's 4 HOWEVER, I would recommend going to Jorge's first if you were in the El Camino Real corridor and go to La Especial if you are on HWY 101. Jorge's has one thing La Especial does not have and that is a quick food order at a taco shop environment (but nicer than most), while La Especial is a sit down restaurant (they have food to go and BIG to go chicken soup containers) and are notoriously slow but the environment is like you are in Mexico inside. Call in your to go order! If I were under the weather I would ask my loved one to please go get me a bowl of Jorge's soup because its closer, quick and very good, but if I were on my death bed, I would want a large container of La Especial soup to enjoy the very best one last time! I've been looking for a good Mexican food place in n. county since I started working up here almost 2 years ago. I hadn't found anything better than a couple 'stars' until going to Jorges. I got the basic California burrito, which was really good, and would have been even better if I did a little customizing of it. It was really only meat (good quality), cheese, sour cream and potatoes. No complaints, it was sizable and was really tasty. The salsa was great. Little kick, not overpowering. Also got a fish taco, which was also very good. My mom says I'm a good eater, but after the burrito and the taco, I was full. Total was about $7 and change. Basically another mexican joint hole in the wall. Its a typical north county mexican resteraunt not much different than the other shacks, it does have a few stand outs. The chicken mole use to be good. But lastnight was a strike one on it, likewise with the beans, tasted like canned. I got a california burrito without any guac or sour cream?? What... i asked for guac and got carne asada, cheese, and potato... was the driest thing ive ever had. It sucked. Last california burrito i had, got my sick, and i've eaten at all hole in the walls, and this one failed. I will still get their hot sauce and soup though, since its still their best. Quality on their food is degrading though, time to find a new stand by for my california burrito fixings. read more

Good stuff! And I'm not just talking about the famous soup...on a recent morning, Jorge's chilaquiles were better than most local full-service Mexican restaurants' and at $6, quite a bit cheaper! A big plate of huevos con chorizo was also cooked to perfection. Their salsa is fresh and just spicy enough to round out the meal. Lots of choices and different combinations. Their rolled tacos are also excellent, although their tacos dorados are 'just average'. Great hole in the wall Mexican. Ordered a bunch of Mexican take out one evening. I went for the combination platter .... 2 soft tacos (Chorizo and Mole Chicken) and 1 enchilada (Beef). The Chorizo and Chicken enchilada were great but I'm not a fan of Mole Chicken so not quite sure why I went with that. My wife had the fish burrito and said it was very good. We had the soup and it was nice enough. The Guac was OK but nothing special. read more

Impossible to review Jorge's. Probably the best taco shop in town, except they're deathly slow (no phone orders) and a propensity to use WAY too many onions. I live 5 minutes from Jorge's and a round trip can easily take an hour. (Recommendation: cocktail at Blue Fin Sushi while waiting, but that shouldn't be necessary.) Anyway, my standard test for Mexican food is 2 crispy chicken tacos, and Jorge's are unparalleled. White chicken, ample lettuce, tomato and cheese, and (the kicker) guacamole served as a matter of course. Who does that? Nobody. The soups are spectacular, the nachos are really good. The salsa is mediocre. If you have time on your hands and you like onions, you'll LOVE Jorge's. Otherwise, you'll still probably love Jorge's. read more
