The chicken soup is very tasty, with shredded chicken that remains moist and flavorful and generous portions of avocado, and the carnitas burritos are delectable. But the reason for this review is to extol the crispy carnitas tacos. My favorite taco is from Tito's Tacos in L.A., and I've never found any that come close. Until now. While my beloved Tito's taco is made with shredded beef, I found the carnitas taco at Jorge's every bit as flavorful. And it comes with cheese and guacamole included. Used to be better. Held off on a review, but today my wife's order was totally messed up (stuff in it that was requested not to be and even said Not to on the receipt) and my burrito is barely room temperature. The cheese isn't melting at all due to the cold meat and ingredients. That is how people get sick. No good. read more

The Chicken soup is the best in the world, Texcoco style if you love hot, or get salsa and add to your own heat. Fresh warm hand made flour tortillas are the bomb. Anyone who doesn't like the soup on this board probably works for another restaurant (haters). Its not fancy, it is authentic, and there is usually a line to the front door. I think they do a good job for the price. Lots of white breast meat used. The chicken soup is good.. HOWEVER, there is about quadruple the salt you need in that container. If they would lower the salt content & add a couple vegetables I would come back for more way more often. read more

I'm not quite sure what Jorge's puts in its soup and its coleslaw but I'm pretty sure they're playing like Coke did back in the day. I would be a liar if I didn't say Jorge's has caused more than a couple mini arguments between my husband and me. If we're getting Mexican I get sudden tunnel vision and absolutely crave that soup and salad. My hubby, on the other hand, is the same when it comes to Rudy's carnitas (which are definitely the best by far if I'm wanting tacos). I won't go on about the soup as it's been covered but that salad...(insert dreaming look here). It's not creamy mayonaise laden, but crunchy sweet salty heaven. And it's super cheap to boot. After a 45 minute wait time we began to wonder if the food would be worth it. No matter how good the food is, once you've waited for that long in a small restaurant among other anxious customers it's not that worth it. The soup was good - not amazing, but good. The California burrito was our favorite because of the real potatoes. The carne asada burrito was just like any other decent Mexican food restaurant. All in all, good food, terrible wait time. THUMBS DOWN. Go to Mexico Viejo they actually serve hot fresh burritos. Or hit up El Pueblo in Cardiff or Lordes down by Seaside Market. I grew up in Encinitas in the 70s, used to ride my skateboard down Tzena and shoot out onto Mountain Vista and coast to Quickie, post up my skate and dominate Star Castle, Asteroids and Scramble. (The first games they had were Berserk ( "Intruder Alert" ) and Rally Car. I consider myself a local. Since I bank with Union on the corner across the parking lot from Jorges, I started eating here when they first opened. As a long time fan of Rauls Shack on the coast, I was stoked to have another location with the same attention to care and detail as Rauls (the wife of Jorge's owner still owns Rauls, and the husband opened up Jorge's). The food WAS good initially and I would have given them 4 stars (I only give 5 Stars when they earn them) for the first years of business. I imagine the soup is still really good.... I was in the old hood recently and it had been awhile since I had eaten there, and I obviously forgot why. I wanted to show off a new mexican eatery to my friend who was new to the area, and we both consider ourselves MEXPERTS .... It started out great... Customer service was friendly, but thats where it stopped. We ordered the California burritos and when we went to pick it up he asked if we wanted 1 or 2 salsas (I always use 5-7 salsas at other delis, but only use 3 cups and refill them) My friend went to pick it up as my wife had called, and when he asked for 3 each the dude shook his head and instead grabbed a soup bowl and dumped some salsa into it for us to share. If I was alone I would be ecstatic but sharing salsa (which to me feels almost like swapping spit) is only something I do with my wife!!!! After all, we aren't dipping chips into this, we are dumping it onto our burrito. Willing to give them a pass as they have always been LAME about their salsa delegation, I took one bite into the burrito and it was COLD. Potatoes were crunchy and not tasty crunchy but undercooked crunchy. Cheese was straight out of the fridge, not melted, and they obviously didn't even throw the carne onto the grill. Really Jorge? 4 1/2 Stars? I don't think so! What a disappointment! I guess I should have had the chicken soup, but I wasn't sick... Anyway, my date had the fajita burrito and pronounced it "YUCK". I had the carnita crispy taco and the relleno special. BLECH! When we went in and said it was our first time there, asking what was good, the woman in front of us said, "Everything is good!" I love this place! Eating my way through the menu and I haven't found anything I haven't liked yet. The soup of course is a favorite and I really like that you can get the cabbage salad as a side or instead of rice and beans on the combo plates. In a previous review I gave them 4 stars because I had cold cheese on top of my enchiladas (I know - picky, picky), but I've had the enchiladas a few more times and they are nice and hot with melted cheese. Jorge's has the best chicken and rice soup! (Order it TEX-COCO if you like spicy). I have been coming to this hidden gem since it open in the mid 90's. Jorge used to have huge rotisseries in the front to roast the chickens fresh daily. They still do, but its off site now to make more space for tables. Very casual atmosphere, walk-up order and pick-up, indoor and some outdoor seating. The staff is always friendly and even if there's a long line, they get thru it quickly. Prices are very reasonable. If you have a cold, or are otherwise feeling sick, get a bowl of their soup and you'll be feeling better in no time! read more

I have tried 2 different burritos from this place, simple bean and cheese and a breakfast burrito (with actual potatoes instead of french fries!) and they were both delicious! I got a carne asada burrito (carne asada, salsa fresco, and guac) and I asked to add cheese and sour cream. My husband got the California burrito (carne asada, potatoes, sour cream, and cheese). The total was $12.20. The burritos were huge and so delicious. This is one of those 'hole in the wall' Mexican restaurants. It was very small and did not have a public restroom. The man at the register was a little rude, but it was very busy so I'm guessing he was just trying to get everyone served quickly. Will definitely go back. read more
