Unacceptable Discrimination - We Were Ignored Entirely I had a disturbing experience at Tavern on Broadway in Newport, RI, that I feel compelled to share. I visited with three Black women (All of us active duty Navy) we were the only Black patrons in the bar at the time. We were seated by a hostess, but from the moment we sat down, we were completely ignored. Other guests (who were not people of color) came in after us and were served promptly, while no one came to our table -- not even to take a drink order. We approached the hostess desk multiple times and were told each time that someone would be right with us. That never happened. Staff walked by us, looked at us, and continued serving others. The most disturbing part: some staff members laughed and looked directly at us after one of our follow-ups, as if they had no intention of serving us at all. It was humiliating and clearly intentional. No one should ever experience that kind of treatment, especially in 2025. I can't speak to others' experiences here, but for us, the message was loud and clear: we were not welcome. (RESPONSE To owners comment) Hi Jim, I appreciate the response but I have to be honest. What you described is not what actually happened. The restaurant was not busy during the time we were there. I have photos that show multiple open tables and very few guests. We were seated and completely ignored while other people who came in after us were immediately served. We followed up with the hostess more than once and each time we were told someone would be right with us. That never happened. Staff walked by us, looked directly at us, and continued serving others. Some even laughed after one of our follow-ups. That did not feel like a case of being understaffed. It felt intentional and targeted. We are a group of active duty Navy members who simply wanted to sit down for a meal. Instead we were treated like we did not belong. I am not posting this to argue but to be truthful about what we experienced. I hope your team reflects and takes real action so no one else is made to feel the way we were. read more

Of all the restaurants I had researched before my trip to Newport, this was the one I was looking forward to the most. They had a lobster roll that was more reasonably priced compared to other restaurants. We came during dinner time on a Sunday and there was no wait! There were still several tables occupied. I started off with a Whaler's Rise APA, and my wife had the Shipyard pumpkin ale. With no hesitation, I went with the lobster roll. The sandwich was different in that it was on a hamburger bun. The sandwich was awesome, and the fries were just as good. We enjoyed our experience here so much we came back on Tuesday. The restaurant has a cool set up and wasn't too loud. One thing that did stand out was the French onion soup, that was pretty good! The tavern looks exactly as described, a tavern. You almost feel like you should be part of a crew on a ship. We were told our waitress would be over shortly and we finally saw her about 10 minutes later. We ordered our food and two bottles of beer. One night we decided to take a big night out in town, booked an Uber and found ourselves downtown. We had looked through yelp to see where we could get craft cocktails and good bites, and unfortunately thought Tavern on Broadway was our spot, but we were wrong. We started with a reservation, and they tried to seat us towards the windows which were open and streaming in cigarette smoke from the street. Thankfully we were able to request a table towards the back, but it caused obvious consternation with the seating hostess. Regardless we remained optimistic and opened the menus. The menu was pretty broad, so we started with a beer and a wine, and ordered some wings while we pondered. When the wings arrived, they looked pretty bland, and then once we ate them, we realized they were just as bland as they looked. The wings were dry, chewy, and had almost no sauce. For our entrees, I ordered the pasta with pesto, and he got a dip with fries, and they were both dismal. My pasta was so overcooked, I didn't even have to chew it for it to fall apart into a pile of mush in my mouth. The flavor of the sauce was bland and lacked any discernible pesto notes like garlic or basil, and just reminded me of green pasta water. The dip was no better, with stringy meat, and grainy, obviously pre-frozen fries. When the server came back to us with plates mostly untouched, he asked us how everything tasted. I was honest with him that we were not interested in continuing to eat it, so he offered to remake the dishes for us. We declined, and told him nicely that we would just like our checks. While we waited, we made reservations elsewhere, and after that had a very nice second shot at dinner at the White Horse Tavern. Take it from me, do not waste your time here. Food was terrible, service was just as bad, and the ambiance was nonexistent. Skip our first step and go straight to making a reservation elsewhere and eating there. Such a shame too, this place has a stellar location, and could really do good business if they just put some effort in! read more

We went back here tonight for dinner, and I have to say that it has improved a ton since I went there last year. I think that they got a new chef, and you can definitely tell! The quality of the food has improved in a very noticeable way, and if this chef keeps working there, I will be glad to go back for more meals! Tonight, I had a burger, which was smaller and less meatloafy than its predecessor. It was very tender and flavorful, and served on a pillowy brioche bun with cheddar cheese, mixed greens, and tomato. Simple, classic, and well prepared. I also subbed the sweet and spicy Honey Sriracha Brussels Sprouts for the fries, and that's honestly the way to go with side dishes. The fries are just okay, but the Brussels Sprouts pack a flavorful punch with a crispy exterior coated in the greatest sauce I've ever had. Yummmmmm. Other standouts from the appetizer menu are the tender and crisp Calamari, coated in an addictive housemade Thai chili sauce, and the Garlic Parm wings, which add a powerful dose of Italian inspired flavor to this bar staple. So good, and very reasonably priced as well. Speaking of reasonable prices.. Tavern is awesome when it comes to meal deals! They do appetizers half price Monday-Saturday, Buck A Shuck nights for oysters and raw bar, and a Wednesday Date Night special - 3 courses for 2 with a bottle of wine for $45.. you can't really beat that, especially in a town like Newport, where a lot of places can get pricy. They definitely cater to a more local crowd, and the restaurant can be boisterous at times - don't come here if you're looking for an intimate, quiet evening. But if you're good with an extensive menu that has something for everyone, plus many creative cocktails and draft beers, Tavern is a place worth checking out. Downtown Newport may look a little different these days, but it sure does still taste delicious! We made our reservations for outside patio seating and it was such a perfect night for it. Pro tip- definitely make your reservations at the beginning of the week. Everything fills up so fast! We started with oyster shooters sinces it was Kali's birthday and then moved on to some raw bar. Native Littlenecks and Shrimp Cocktail- so summer, so perfect! For our meals, we shared the Soba Noodle Salad Special and the Fig and Goat Cheese Pizza with carmelized onions, arugula and balsamic reduction. The pizza was sweet and satisfying. The salad was amazing as well. The Tavern On Broadway is located in the heart of Newport's Historic District in a completely renovated 200 year old colonial building. There are so many fun spots around it as well. Definitely stop by The Fastnet Pub after. It's on the other side of the street. It's always a great time at The Fastnet as well. This place really surprised us with how good it was! Everything else around Newport had 1+hour waits so we stopped in here and they got us a table right away! The nachos were so good and filing. I got the quesadilla and onion rings while a friend got the steak and both were beyond delicious. The quesadilla was honestly the best I've ever had. The lemonade was also very good and we got several refills of that. Service was very fast and we never had to wait for anything. Dropped in with the husband for a late brunch/lunch on my birthday; I guess they stopped serving brunch by the time we arrived since we got the lunch menu so I settled on a mimosa to start off the meal, at least. I got the fish and chips while my husband got a Cuban. The mimosa was decent, the fish was cooked perfectly but it was way too oily at the bottom of the filet and soaked into the bed of fries below the fish which caused most of the fries to be soggy; which was unfortunate because the fries were actually pretty good when not drenched in oil. The cole slaw was very bland; it seemed like all they did was put together some slaw mix with some oil and no seasoning. My husband wasn't happy with Cuban either and when I took a bite, I could see why; lacked any depth in flavor, couldn't even taste the mustard (if there was any).
