I've seen this place all over social media and was excited to finally try it. I stopped in while waiting for my hair appointment next door and explicitly asked the bartender/manager, Kai, for the Mango Sticky Rice. She pointed me to the side orders, she mentioned the mango sticky rice was purple colored - took my order, and handed me my bag. When I got next door, I opened it to find only a box of plain purple rice...no mangoes anywhere. I took one bite, realized it was the completely wrong dish, and went right back inside. Instead of fixing her mistake, Kai told me I would have to buy an entirely new order if I wanted the mango sticky rice. I even called later to give them a second chance to make it right, but she doubled down. It's incredibly disappointing to see a business prioritize a few dollars of profit over basic customer service and like $5-8 worth of rice!!!! very small amount of money that cost them this review. As someone who loves sharing great food spots on TikTok, I won't be recommending this one. Save your money--there are plenty of other Thai places that actually appreciate their customers especially oakland locals. read more

Tried this after seeing an episode of Check Please Bay Area. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambiance great. Location great. Server great.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Food...salty. The catfish crumble salad was our least favorite. Very salty and interesting. Tasted like breadcrumbs coated with fish sauce really. No fish chunks/flakes or anything resembling catfish in it..just an overall fishy taste. Not what I was expecting. My BF was so excited to try the drunken noodles but again very salty and not the wide noodles but more like skinny ramen noodles. The crab fried rice by itself was good but adding the sauce given made it too salty (and I like salt). Our favorite was the green chicken curry. Excellent but I overheard the waitress saying it's going to be removed from the menu. We will give this place another go as they have many interesting options on the menu but hoping for a better experience. read more

Jo's Modern Thai serves solid Thai food with a fresh spin that makes it worth a visit. With so many great options for Oakland Restaurant Week, we finally decided on Jo's Modern Thai given the great reviews but initially wary of Restaurant Week offerings. However, we we were definitely not disappointed with the food or the service! The restaurant itself has a modern, sleek vibe with a full bar. Because they were so busy, we ended up getting seated in the outdoor patio area in the back. While it was a bit chilly, they had heat lamps to keep the outdoor patrons warm. In terms of the food, we got a mix of different things and most I would recommend: Shrimp Mousse Toast (4.5/5): Such a perfect bite! The fluffy milk bread is hot and toasted, covered with the cool slightly sweet Kewpie mayo. This all combined with the pickled shallots and creamy shrimp mousse provided the right mix of textures and flavors. Coconut Cakes (4.5/5): The slightly sweet coconut cakes provide the perfect vehicle the shrimp and scallop ceviche that's a little bit salty and funky. Would have loved another round of these! Jo's Famous Party Wings (3.5/5): While these chicken wings were crispy and great when paired with the two sauces: Kewpie mayo based and tamarind chili, I wasn't necessarily blown away. They were solid but wouldn't get again. Pork Belly Curry (4/5): The red curry was slightly spicy with hints of sweetness from the coconut, but the pork belly was plentiful and crisp providing that extra something to this dish. Lobster pad thai (4/5): While I am a sucker for pad thai, this was done pretty darn well! The noodles were cooked well and with enough balance of the sweet and nuttiness in the flavoring. Although I would have loved to have more lobster, the few pieces really made it a little special. Thai Tea Panna Cotta (3.5/5) I enjoyed that this had a nice not too sweet Thai tea flavor and it surprisingly paired really well with the slices of blood orange and strawberry! However, I felt like it lacked some other textural element to make it a more complete dessert. Sweet Blue Sticky Rice with Mango Sorbet (4.5/5): Would highly recommend ending the meal with this! There was enough flavors going on with the rice contrasting with the mango sorbet, and the pandan rice krispies provide a nice crunch to provide texture. The service was pretty good considering how busy the restaurant was for restaurant week! The entire staff was pretty friendly even accomodating as we waited at the bar to be seated. In terms of parking, we were able to find street parking and most of the nearby spots seem to be free after 6pm. Jo's is another reason to love Oakland. Since celebrating my mom's birthday here last summer we've returned again and each visit has been just as good, or better. Happy hour lasts until 18:30 and is awesome for early birds like us. Highly recommend the fried chicken sliders! Camila is six stars in our book. I came here with my family on a Thursday evening for dinner, it was nicely decorated, and we were seated right away. The service was great, everyone was very attentive and our food came out pretty fast. The food itself was fresh, I could taste it in all the greens and herbs. The portions of the appetizers were a little on the small side in my family and I's opinion. If I were to order any of the appetizers again it would be the crispy catfish salad, it reminded me of nam kao which is a crispy rice ball salad. The flavors and texture were on point. The entrees were good, the drunken noodles had a nice spice, the pork belly curry had good flavor to it, and the crab fried rice was done beautifully. Really exceptional experience all around! They were decently busy on a Wednesday evening, but had no problem finding street parking and were seated right away. The ambiance was warm and elegant and our server asked about any dietary restrictions and let us know the specials. I would choose the coconut cakes over the salad though, this was such a pleasant surprise to eat. My friend and I visited Jo's Modern Thai for dinner during the Oakland Restaurant Week. They had a $45 pp dinner menu, which included 3 courses. Each course had 2 options to pick from. Since there were 2 of us, we opted for all the items on the restaurant week menu and also added another item and 2 drinks from their regular menu. Jo's Modern Thai in Oakland offers a vibrant and exciting take on Thai cuisine. The restaurant itself is buzzing with energy, boasting bright lighting, and a well-lit atmosphere. There's even a lovely outdoor patio area in the back, complete with standing heat lamps for chillier evenings. The service at Jo's Modern Thai was a big plus. The staff was attentive and friendly. They were happy to answer questions and guide us through the menu. The menu itself was a delightful exploration of modern twists on classic Thai dishes. For starters, we tried their two tempting options: 1. Vegan Coconut Cakes (Kanom Krok) - crispy on the outside, with sweet corn, coconut cream, and green onion filling 2. Shrimp Mousse Toast (Kanom Pung Nah Koong). This classic featured fluffy milk bread topped with a savory shrimp mousse, pork lard (for those who indulge!), and a delightful combination of fresh herbs, pickled vegetables, and plum sauce. Both the appetizers were simply amazing and delicious and raised the bar for the rest of the dishes. I could have gone for another round of coconut cakes. For the main course, we tried - 1. Massaman Curry (Gaeng Massaman Man Farang). This rich and flavorful curry featured fingerling potatoes, braised cabbage, roasted cauliflower, and yellow onion, all brought together with a creamy peanut sauce, and toasted coconut. It was a vegetarian and gluten-free option that packed a punch in terms of flavor, but it wasn't spicy and barely had any fingerling potatoes (2 in total). 2. Drunken Noodle (Brisket Pad Kee Mao) featured wok-stir fried ramen noodles tossed with smoky barbecue brisket, Thai basil, yellow onion, bell pepper, and green peppercorn. The brisket was dry, and the noodles looked more like cup noodles. Compared to the rest of the dishes, the drunken noodle wasn't as great even though it had potential. Another dish that we tried from the regular menu was the Issan Style Yellow Fin Tuna Tartare (Laab Pla Dip). This dish featured fresh yellowfin tuna seasoned with laab herbs, allium, and toasted rice powder, served with a Meyer lemon and makrut mayo and laab vinaigrette on a bed of sesame shrimp crackers. We asked for this dish to be extra spicy, and it delivered to some extent. It's a great option for adventurous eaters who want to experience a unique and flavorful take on Thai cuisine. To finish off our meal, we tried both the desserts on their restaurant week menu - 1. Sweet Blue Sticky Rice with Mango Sorbet (Khao Niew Mamuang). The Sticky Rice was a delightful vegetarian and gluten-free option, featuring vibrant blue rice with a sweet and creamy coconut topping and refreshing mango sorbet. It was the better dessert of the two options we had. 2. I experienced A1 service and enjoyed a tasty meal just now. It all started with me making a call to the restaurant making sure that a party of one could partake in their Restaurant Week menu. The person who answered the phone, which I found out was the manager, was extremely professional and nice and confirmed that solo diners can enjoy their special menu. Upon coming to the restaurant I was again greeted by the friendly manager who seated me promptly. Every wait staff was welcoming, professional and friendly. I started with the shrimp mousse toast which was very flavorful - the portion size was very generous. For my entrée, I had the drunken noodles with the barbecue brisket. Although the spice level was medium, it packed a spicy punch but the spiciness did not overshadow the other flavors. The beef was a great addition. The highlight of the meal was the sweet blue sticky rice with mango sorbet. It was a petite portion and one that I quickly devoured. I will definitely come back for that dessert. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. Last but not least, the inside decor is extremely eye appealing. It's very obvious the owner put great detail into the restaurant design. I was so excited to finally try Jo's Modern Thai. People have raved about this place for years. I made a reservation, but it was not necessary. The place was pretty dead for a Saturday night. First red flag. We were seated outside on the patio, which was fine, since the weather was nice. But as the sun was setting, the gap in the fence made the sun hit us right in the eyes, and it got worse as the minutes went by. We asked to move tables, which we were told was fine, since there were a bunch of open tables out on the patio. Then the waiter left and didn't come back for a long time. No offer to help us move our food and drinks to the other table. They said we could move tables and then disappeared. It was weird. Not a huge deal, except you'd expect a lot more "service" with these prices. Drinks were good. Crunchy catfish salad was great, tuna tar tar dish was good, oysters were good. Lobster pad Thai was a major fail. The lobster tail was the tiniest thing ever and it was rubbery and overcooked. I was so looking forward to eating this dish, and was left really disappointed. And the pad Thai was really soggy and "wet". It was a weird consistency. It all started out pretty well, and then went downhill. The good dishes were good, but the bad dish was bad. Came here on my BFs bday for dinner. It's a pretty small place but there's also outdoor seating. Food was okay, but was lowkey disappointed by the catfish salad and the drunken noodles. The catfish salad had ground up catfish with lots of breading which started getting soggy. Wish there were either bigger pieces of catfish or less breading. The fish sauce was also very overpowering. The drunken noodles were fine but honestly didn't taste like a standard drunken noodle. It didn't really remind me of Thai food and the noodles were a cheapy ramen noodle. The party wings were good but nothing standout. It tastes like wings from literally anywhere. They gave two dipping sauces. One was a sriracha Mayo? And the other was a sweet chili. Both were pretty good but I preferred the sweet chili. The curry was probably the best thing we ate. This is the only dish I could wholeheartedly recommend. Note this review is for a meal we had before the news of the sudden departure of the chef. So sad to hear of this news, what a great loss for Oakland and this neighborhood. I read the article from former staff. I am shocked. I don't want to support a restaurant that mistreats staff. Sanitation issues, so many other things that show a lack of integrity from the top...you'll have to read the article yourself. I have to say, the customer service we received from staff was great, and the food was great...where it goes from here on out though, no one knows. Hope they can get it right, clearly many locals love this place. The food was so tasty! This place has been on our list to try ever since it opened and for my brother's birthday we finally made the visit! Our family of four shared everything family style (the best part about going out with a group is you get to sample a little bit of everything). And although we were a little shocked at the smaller than expected portions, we were actually quite full at the end! I do recommend family style for this place. Here's what we shared: -Crunchy Catfish Salad: shockingly small portion and the catfish was unexpectedly served in a crumble style instead of chunks of meat as I imagined it would, and a little too sour for me but it was still delicious and definitely earned it's name--crunchy! Due to the sour nature of this dish, I would not recommend anyone order this as their main, definitely share it. -Massaman Curry: vegan dish, sweet, sauce was so good we asked for more rice to finish off the sauce; although it was good I'd probably go for a meat curry next, as a carnivore I did miss my meat in my curry. -Drunken Noodles: loved the smokiness, sweet flavor, brisket was cooked just right (medium rare); glad I shared this dish because I think the smokiness could get overwhelming had I had the entire plate to myself -Stir Fried Japanese Eggplant: tasted great but the outer skin was a little tough, wished it was cooked more thoroughly although I can see some other people enjoying it For dessert: -Blue Rice Pudding w/ Mango Sorbet: so good, my favorite of the two desserts we ordered! I really liked the variety of textures--blue sticky rice, crunchy sticky pandan rice krispies, sorbet, mango pieces. Can never go wrong with mango and really loved the unique pandon rice krispies (I'd seriously purchase a bag of those)! -Corn Sundae: very unique, sweet & salty flavor profile; don't order if you don't like any sort of bitterness (the mock fish sauce was a little bitter, similar to bitters in a drink). I'm a big creamy corn milk fan, less of a coconut fan. I felt like the corn part was a little overshadowed by the other flavors. But that might just be me, my brother said this was his favorite of the two. Birthday boy got the Samarai Sun cocktail, which he liked! I tried a sip, and it was really refreshing and light. Would make for a great summer drink. The cocktail menu is pretty expansive, so many flavor combos that I'd love to come back to try. Great customer service. No birthday specials, but they kindly put a candle on the dessert that we ordered. Seating is pretty limited, and busy even on a weeknight. Note that they do take reservations, so it would be a good idea to make one in advance. Since we didn't make one, we were given the outdoor patio seating, basically coffee table seating, but within 5 minutes of sitting down to study the menu another table opened up and they offered that to us! The place is very modern/hip, and the unique asian fusion flavors on the menu reflects that. Didn't realize it was in the 2024 Michelin Guide until we got there. It's rated Bib Gourmand, which means quality food for a reasonable price. Not sure what the future holds for Jo's now that staff and chef are gone. Came here for date night around 6pm with my partner. The place is a whole vibe. The ambiance was nice, it's beautifully decorated, and there were plenty of single diners as well as groups of friends enjoying dinner. I loved the color palette. The bathroom was dark on purpose with a red light which was interesting. It smells good in there too. We were met by the host and seated at the bar for happy hour. We were able to have nice conversation with the bartenders. Their drinks were strong. We got a lemon drop, a daiquiri, and an orange wine. The lemon drop almost knocked us out lol. Can I also just mention how stunning the presentation of everything is too? I mean, look at the ice cube. Here's what we got: Laab tostada - Great flavor in the laab! Felt so fresh with a balance of tang and saltiness. The tostada was thick enough to hold everything up. It was juicy too. Jo's Famous Party Wings/Peek Kai Tod Nam Pla (fried free range Mary's chicken wings, crispy garlic, cilantro, spicy tamarind jaew sauce and sweet & sour mayo) - These were crispy and tasty! We had wings for dinner the day before this, and we still were not tired of them. I am a huge fan of tamarind, so salty and sour wings just made sense to me. Beef Cheek Green Curry (Fermented rice noodle, Thai eggplant, shredded cabbage, pickled mustard green & fresno chili, bean sprout, Thai basil) - For the price, the portions are small. The beef cheek was tender and there were a lot of textures with the vegetables. Just wish there was a bit more of everything, especially the noodles. Mango Sticky Rice - This came in the form of a cup with hot sticky rice and coconut cream on the bottom with mango sorbet on top. The mango sorbet felt fresh and homemade, like from real mangoes. The sticky rice and coconut cream had the perfect amount of sweetness. The mix of warm and cold was fun to eat. All in all I think this spot deserves its hype. It's more on the pricey side though. We ended up arriving early and the hostess was able to seat us earlier. *Shrimp toast- MUST. I'd come back here just for this specifically. The toast was nice and crispy/fluffy and there was a good amount of shrimp filling. It was also drizzled in spicy mayo I think which made it so savory. Even the guy next to us raved about it! *Jo's party tamarind wings- my bf loved this one. The wings were nice and crispy, had a hint of tamarind, and the sauces paired so well topped with that crispy garlic. *Drunken noodle- this one was ok! We ordered it bc of the brisket and how different it sounded. Not a fan of the ramen noodles they used and the brisket was a bit dry. I recently checked out Jo's Modern Thai for the first time. I'd heard good things, so needed to try it for myself. First off, I'd say that the ambience is great. There's really nice decor inside and the vibe was very energetic and chatty. The wait staff and hostess were also super friendly and helpful. Now getting to the food... I went with 2 other people so we were able to share a few dishes. Like any southeast Asian joint, it's always best to do family style. We ended up getting the crunchy catfish salad, pork belly curry, drunken noodles with brisket, cucumber salad, and massaman curry. Both of the curries were super rich and flavorful. I especially liked the pork belly curry which had a great balance. I think my favorite dish was the drunken noodles. The brisket was really flavorful and the noodles were well made. We also enjoyed both of the appetizers (catfish salad, cucumber). Overall, the food was very solid. I'd say the dishes are twists on traditional Thai food that I've seen in the past. I will say that the dishes felt a little pricey to me, but I think that's to be expected with the type of upscale vibe that the restaurant has. I just got back from a trip to Thailand, so I wasn't sure how Jo's could compete, but I really enjoyed the food! They serve a mix of classics and more modern fushion-y dishes. The standouts for me were the Shrimp Mousse Toast and the Pork Belly Curry. The milk bread toast was fluffy and crispy on the edges and the cucumber sauce balanced the sweetness perfectly. The curry was well balanced and deeply flavorful. The Surf & Turf was also a surprise hit; the pork jowl, squid, crispy rice, kumquat, and herbs combined in a magical way to create a unique flavor and texture profile. Jo's also has a fun cocktail menu; the Laurel Punch I ordered was incredible. They only offer two desserts, but they're both delicious modern takes on classic Thai flavors, albeit a bit pricy. The space itself has a cute vibe and the servers were friendly, making for a comfortable dining experience. We unintentionally visited during Oakland restaurant week, but we decided to just order off the regular menu and share family style so we could try more things. This ended up being cheaper as well. I stopped by yesterday evening with a 6:00 p.m. reservation with a group of four for Oakland Restaurant Week and got seated outside on the patio. The outdoor area is beautiful: covered, heated and gives off the feeling of being in a friend's backyard. There were two options offered for each of the three courses so my wife and I ordered one of each so we could try everything out. Across the board, everything was absolutely delicious and there isn't a dish I wouldn't happily order again. The shrimp toast and the curry dish were the highlights of my evening. I loved how crispy the shrimp toasty was and thoroughly enjoyed the flavor profile of the curry. The curry comes with a side of rice so you'll want to make sure to use each and every grain to soak up all the curry from the bowl. Every dish had a crunchy textural component which I thought was a very creative from the chef. I cannot recommend Jo's Modern Thai enough. Anytime I have ever tried to call in an order, or an adjustment to an order, I am put on hold and then disconnected. Really disappointing.

I heard of this place on the Michelin guide and it did not disappoint. My favorite appetizer was the tuna tar tar bites --the hint of mint was just incredible! I'm a huge fan of upscale Asian fusion & Jo's delivers. A great spot for happy hour, drinks, or dinner with a lovely interior & cozy patio. I love how creative their menu is when it comes to both food and drinks. Some of my favorite dishes are the fish sauce popcorn chicken, chicken sliders with papaya salad, laab tostada, house oysters, & the ramen drunken noodles, so creative! Delicious food, delightful venue, and good, friendly service. Brilliant for a cosy local date night. I am hoping that they can make more of their dishes safe for super gluten sensitives like me. I believe it's possible without affecting the overall goodness of the dishes, but they haven't yet. The waiter seemed to think they will soon. We had the oysters, coconut cakes, tuna tartare, papaya salad and the massaman curry. Only the papaya salad didn't exceed expectations; just met them. The rest were surprisingly imaginative and delicious. The five stars is also because they were very careful to warn me off no gluten ingredient dishes that might be cross-contaminated. AND for the tasty, fun cocktails. NO GLUTEN REACTION AFTER!!! I especially like the patio area with outdoor heating, although indoors is surprisingly upscale for the neighborhood. read more

Mmmm...sort review: the price don't match experience. Far too expensive for mediocre food. Although the mango sticky rice was amazing, unfortunately I never have to dine here again. Food wasn't bad, just not good enough for me to tell anyone shout. Lovely food presentation and all. Service was a bit struggling, but the bartender was on point. I could see of you live on the neighborhood, wanted to drink and dessert in a nice atmosphere without going to downtown. The outside dining area was super cute. Plenty of on street parking. Do not leave any valuables on the car. Not that the Laurel district is a hella bad area, but it's no Montclair. Don't have much else to say except...overrated. read more

4.5 stars, but giving that round up. From cocktails, to the array of eats, to dessert, to vibes, this spot is doing the damn thing. Go with a group, order a lot and go family style. We ate a lot and 95% of it was so good. Cocktails were beautiful and not too strong, not sure is that's a good or bad thing; I guess it depends on the night. The bad: The pork belly 'sushi' special wasn't a win. The great: the catfish salad was incredible, also those coconut cakes were fun and a great way to start the meal. The stir fried vegetables were also a great side. It mainly consisted of eggplant and I love, love eggplant. The good: both the whole fried fish and brisket drunken noodles were really good. The whole fried fish was a fun way to share, but it's so deep fried, that it kind of takes away from that light, fresh fish taste. Still good, i def would try it again. The drunken noodle was even better. We opted for no spice since our friend doesn't get down with heat, which I'd imagine if this had more bite, it would have been incredible. Tender brisket atop perfectly cooked noodles. Inside is super modern and hip, while outside is a bit plain, but still a nice enclosed space. Service was great and overall a great night out, but... there is a but... it's pricey. For the neighborhood, it's really pricey. Overall, I'm a fan. It's not super convenient to me in Berkeley, but for a night out or even takeout, it's well done. read more

My twin brother and I stopped in to pick up takeout, but ended up sitting at the bar for a few cocktails while we waited--and we're so glad we did. The bartender (Elise, spelling of name unsure) was not only incredibly knowledgeable but also made us feel right at home with top-tier hospitality. You could tell they really knew their craft--the drinks were balanced, creative, and absolutely delicious. Ambience is upscale/classy but a down to earth feel due to the smooth R&B playing in the background (this was a big win in my book). The menu is not as extensive but it's adventurous. Our server would tell us how to eat the dishes and what pairs best with them. We chose pretty mocktails to drink that added to the vibe. The crab Thai fried rice was full of fresh crab (the price reflects this as it's on the more expensive side for rice). Curry was spicy but delicious. We also had a noodle dish that was yummy (I forgot which one it was). I was happy with everything. This is not your average or basic Thai spot. The chef is putting together culinary creations! Parking is scarce so give yourself a few extra minutes if you're trying to meet your reservation time. read more

10/10 experience. Food was amazing, everything we ordered was delicious. Restaurant is in the most random area of Oakland and looks out of place but it was nice and the patio seating was really cute. The service was also great. We ordered the crispy catfish lettuce wraps, lobster pad thai and curry dish. For dessert, we order mango sticky rice and it was the best I ever had. It was like a classic mango sticky rice but with a lil something extra that put it over the top. I hope the owner resolves their dispute with employees soon so I can go back. read more
