I absolutely love Rose Garden in Uptown Oakland. I've only dined in once, but I order pickup, takeout, or delivery from them very often -- it's easily a once-a-week dinner spot for my partner and me. The staff is consistently so kind and welcoming, which makes the experience even better every time. Truly, there isn't a single bad item on the menu. They do an amazing job offering more unique Laotian dishes alongside classic Thai favorites. Some personal standouts are the kor moo yang (grilled pork jowl), grilled beef short rib, mok pa (steamed catfish), and the Lao-style papaya salad -- which is perfectly spicy and packed with flavor. Portions are generous and incredibly filling, and everything is so flavorful and delicious. Even when ordered for delivery, the food arrives fresh and holds up beautifully. When: Friday evening, 5:45pm, restaurant was pretty empty except some occasional food takeouts. By 6:30, more people coming in to eat in. But it was not full throughout the time we were at the restaurants. Experience: Food came out pretty fast and it was hot(!). Overall, service was good and they checked in on us a few times to make sure all is good. Food: - Nam Khao was fantastic. Crispy rice, the mixed minced vegetables, and the cooked sausage. Together with the lime that you can squeeze to preference, it was delicious! Haven't had Nam Khao this delicious in a while! - Pad See Ew with pork was alright. It was cooked well and a little on the sweeter side rather than savory, but missing the smoky flavor "wok hei" that would take this to the next level that I love. - Fried Sweet Fish was alright too. Fish is fried with a very thin batter but it had black pepper which my kids doesn't want as they're sensitive to anything spicy. The fish had a light fishy taste to it (fresh water fish) which would be better if they even use a little ginger to cut the fishy taste for a better taste. - Guay Tiew is very similar to Pad See Ew with the exception that it had a fried egg on the top and had seafood (shrimp and squid). - Vientiane Crispy Roll is different from regular egg rolls. A bit off the beaten path in the middle of kinda nowhere downtown Oakland lies this Thai eatery. This unassuming place sits on the corner of the block near Alysa Liu's training rink. They cook up Thai and Laotian style foods in a very home style manner. The food is good and filling. Portions are generous compared to some other places in more upscale locales. It was completely empty when we got there and we were the only party to dine in the duration that we were there. We ordered the Curry Roti to share and I ordered the Basil with Beef for myself while my friends ordered the Pad See Ew and Thai Fried Rice. Curry Roti (4/5): I really liked their variety crispness but it was a bit too oily and I wish that it was thicker as well. Basil w/ Beef (4.3/5): Really great flavor and beef was very tender. Really cute Thai place! I loved the decor and the vibe of the place. The server we had was very friendly and accommodating. I had the Kao Poon, which is a coconut milk based soup. I asked if it could be made vegetarian with tofu, and luckily, it could be! The roti was delicious and flaky but a bit oily for my liking. Food was delicious. Service initially was started by a lady who barely understood anything. Then the man came outside and he was more knowledgeable. Ambience was good but the seats are really hard. They are wooden chairs. If you have a sensitive behind, it can actually cause severe pain. My husband was trying to order egg noodles since he's allergic to rice. They have egg noodles on the menu, but he said they don't have. That is why the four stars. Every noodle they had was rice based. The duck is soft and tasty (but do watch out for bone in some pieces). The rice is so cute, comes in the shape of a heart. The thai tea is classic, perfect. This is not only the best Thai food I've had in the Bay Area, but perhaps the best Thai food in California. I got the short back ribs expecting small bits of bone with meat around them. What I got was delightfully unexpected. It was one giant 8 inch rib bone with bits of meat and tendon that you chewed off with your teeth like a caveman. The dish came with dipping sauces and a large, full leaf carrot and lettuce salad as well as sticky rice that came rolled up in saran wrap. This is definitely one that you eat with your hands. It was wildly visceral and unbelievably delicious. The curry and pad Thai we got were amazing as well. We got Delivery and it was insanely cheap. Around $100 for five people. We were very excited to try Rose Garden Uptown, which replaced Belly on San Pablo in Oakland, and we were definitely NOT disappointed. We tried 4 dishes, and they were all exceedingly fresh and generous. Plus, the server was especially kind and pleasant - one of our party has a peanut allergy and couldn't eat the sauce that came with the Lao Fresh Spring Rolls, and the server brought a non-peanut sauce too without us even having to ask. The rolls were large, very fresh and came with an interesting sauce that was not the usual peanut sauce served by other Southeast Asian restaurants that I have tried, and was really delicious. The menu describes the sauce as "sweet and sour," but it's definitely not the Cantonese version of "sweet and sour." I'd get the rolls again. Next, we tried the Laab Seen with raw beef. One of our party couldn't eat spicy food at all, and they prepared the dish without any chili's, but the beef was tasty and very tender. The lettuce and herbs were very fresh (noticing a pattern here?), and the portion was huge. I would recommend sharing this dish, as it is a little monotonous by itself (albeit delicious). Our next dish was the Nam Kao. The rice was quite crunchy, especially compared to some other restaurants' interpretations, but the flavors were great. The peanuts came on the side so our entire party could enjoy. Finally, we had the Tum Mua, medium spicy (the dish was quite spicy. The flavors were excellent, although one person in the party thought the noodles were over-dressed. Like all the other dishes, the vegetables and herbs were very fresh. Overall, the food was tasty and the portions were generous. Given how large the plates were, it's probably best for a group to share several dishes. A few deets - they offer a cash discount. There are about 34 seats, mostly tables for 2 and 4. They don't serve alcohol (yet?). There is street parking, but the area can get busy if there is a show at the Paramount Theater that night.
