BEWARE of this so called Dentist! PLEASE look up the medical complaints against him before trusting your health into Joseph Zimmer's hands, he has a long history of MALPRACTICE! I went in for a standard filling and he injected me with novocain. After I reported continued feeling in my gums, he injected another dose. Still had feeling, he injected another dose, and another, and another. So many that the nurse looked at him like "what are you doing?" Instead of prioritizing the patient's health and rescheduling for another day or an alternative pain killer, Zimmer did what was most convenient for his bank account! After the procedure I could not open my mouth I couldn't eat or chew, I had to be on a liquid diet! I communicated this to Zimmer's office and they scheduled a "free appointment" to provide a orthotic to repair the damage. At my appointment, Zimmer refused to talk to me and instead had another dentist see me. He wouldn't even talk to the patient about his malpractice and was hiding in the back!!! For over 2 months, I couldn't eat or chew solid food. I couldn't open my mouth more than a 1/4 inch. I had to be on a liquid diet until it healed on it's own. I never received an apology or explanation from Zimmer. Instead, I received a bill for what he said would be a free appointment to make up for his MALPRACTICE! Insulting. Zimmer is the Dan Balzerian of dentists. He has a really nice office, pretty people working there, but he is not a caring or skilled medical professional. The non-profit ventures he is so proud of mentioning is actually a result of a plea deal with the medical board for past malpractice. PATIENT BEWARE, do not trust Zimmer with your health! My Hygienist Kat was so amazing and diligent at making sure my teeth were doing great. She is amazing, gentle and caring. Everyone is so nice and thoughtful. I had my wisdom teeth removed here three weeks ago. Before the procedure, I was talked to about my options and decided to be sedated. Zimmer assured me that it would be quick and painless with the sedation. I was told to take a pill before bed the night before and arrive an hour before my appointment at 9am to take another pill which would help with the sedation. I arrived at 9 am and waited for FORTY MINUTES before someone came over to administer the pill. About five minutes later, I was instructed to take another pill. My suspicion is that after waiting for so long, they wanted to give me two pills so the medication would take effect sooner. Shortly thereafter I was brought to the room and nitrous was started. The nitrous caused me to vomit right away (likely removing most the medication administered shortly before from my system). I fell asleep and slept through the first tooth (which was tiny and I was told I wouldn't even notice) but, awoke during the first bottom tooth and remained awake. I know that complications happen and cannot be avoided at times but what happened was honestly traumatic. I was crying out in pain for the remainder of the procedure. I was literally unable to speak as something was jammed in my mouth to hold it open. The experience was so painful and traumatizing. I was somewhat out of it, but I do not recall being communicated with or my comfort being prioritized. I know that once it was started they had to finish but, I was grossly disappointed after paying $600 out of pocket to be sedated and instead being awake and in pain during the majority of the procedure. Zimmer suggested that hopefully I'd have some amnesia from the nitrous which felt somewhat backhanded and as though he was aware of how traumatizing and painful the experience had been. Like I said, I was a bit out of it from the nitrous which made matters more frustrating after the procedure because I was unable stand up for myself, ask questions or explain how unhappy I was with the procedure. After the procedure I was told that I may have to pay more out of pocket than what was explained to me because of "complications". This felt odd as I had xrays before the procedure and they should have known how attached to the bone my teeth were. This was especially frustrating considering that the sedation which, again, was quite pricey was INEFFECTIVE. I was told they were unable to process my payment at that time and would send me a receipt. Again, I was loopy from the nitrous and unable to question this. This was on Thursday, I did not receive a receipt until I called on Monday to inquire. I also let them know my that experience was awful to which they basically responded with 'sorry' and that was it. Honestly, it seems like they don't care as long as they get their money. I asked for the doctor to call me back but it has been over two weeks and I've heard nothing. I never even received a follow up call which I overheard the receptionist making. I am disappointed in their customer service especially after expressing my displeasure. I researched later and found that sedation is often just used to relax the patient and does not guarantee you will be asleep through the procedure. This information was not presented to me, as I was assured I'd be asleep and I wouldn't feel anything. Likely to get me agree to paying a higher cost which benefits them. I'm healing as expected but, I would not return to Zimmer. It's difficult to say if my experience would have been different elsewhere but I can say I would have felt different about my experience if medication had been administered when I was asked to arrive, if the possibility of me being awake during the process despite sedation had been brought to my attention, and if there had been more communication with myself or my partner who was there as my advocate. read more

After a disappointing interaction with my usual dentist, I sought help from Dr. Zimmer's practice to perform a root canal on a tooth that had become infected and abscessed following a routine filling three weeks ago. Several of my friends had been seen here and had nothing but wonderful things to say. I called Tuesday afternoon around 4 pm and after speaking with a very kind receptionist, I was told to come in at 8 am on Wednesday. After being given the run around by my other dentist's office for several days, this was wonderful news! It was great to be able to fill out all of my paperwork online before going in. When I arrived, the staff were all very efficient and caring. I had been in terrible pain for about five days by that point and so I really appreciated their concern. I only waited a few minutes before being taken back and having x rays, and from there, Dr. Zimmer came in to introduce himself and begin my treatment very quickly. He was very concerned with my comfort and never got impatient the way some dentists do when I said I needed to take a break or that something was too painful for me. He explained everything very thoroughly, and made a very uncomfortable and painful procedure as pleasant as it could possibly be. They were also able to arrange a payment plan for my treatment, which was a huge help. Also: the surroundings are lovely, the artwork is top notch, and there's an office dog (Nikita!) who helped distract me from my initial pain and nervousness when I arrived. By far, the absolute best interaction I have ever had at a dental office even though it was the worst dental treatment I've ever had to undergo. I have a lot of dental anxiety. I was essentially a dentist's nightmare as a child; constantly freaking out in the dentists chair every time they had to polish my teeth. Cavities were the end of the world. Aging helped, but even as an adult it's hard not to bolt from the room when the drill comes out. Dr Zimmer's office is the only establishment that has made my dental appointments something I look forward to. Everyone there is friendly and so calm I never have any doubt that things will go well. Dr Zimmer himself is the most competent dentist I have ever visited. He recently did an extraction and implant while I had a mouth infection from traveling, and did the whole thing within 30 minutes and with zero pain. I really recommend this place. This is the second time I've had a wisdom tooth extraction from this dentist. I can say that he is very skilled, professional, and quick. His team seems to be on the same page. Today, while unable to speak because I was completely numb and had just had a tooth removed, the front desk alerted me I had a past due balance that doubled the original quote I was given. After telling them I was unable to pay for any more than the quote I was given, the receptionist asked me when I thought I would be able to pay it. I told her I didn't know what it was for and asked if we could discuss later because I could barely speak. She VERY rudely said "well it's from years ago and we tried to contact you for months... So." I'm sorry. I was never told my account was not up to date. I had just been in that office less than a week before. And I definitely don't have the capacity to discuss it after a tooth extraction! On top of that... Don't be rude to your patients! I'll come back because Dr. Zimmer is good that's why there's 3 stars. I'm afraid I have to both update my 5-star review AND find a new dentist. Both these things make me sad. After being a very happy customer for 5 years, I have to say that the quality of care at Dr. Zimmer's office has decreased in the last year or so ... I think due to the sheer volume of patients being treated at any one time. While the level of care I used to receive was very good, friendly, and super attentive, lately the Dr. always seems rushed. This rushing may have contributed to my current SNAFU dental situation: an old filling fell out last fall. I went to get it re-done (appt #1), and was told that really it'd be better to come back and do a crown (appt #2). After a couple weeks, the crown started aching so I went back (appt #3), and was told that the crowning process must have damaged the nerve, and was scheduled to come back for a root canal (appt #4). [Side note: no one told me not to eat before the 3hr root canal appointment, and so half-way through the procedure I puked all over the dentist. I guess that's what you get for not telling a patient not to eat before undergoing conscious sedation!] A month after the root canal, the tooth was pressure sensitive, so I went back (appt #5) and was told to wait and see if it improved. Six months later (and now three months pregnant) the root canal started giving me serious sharp pains, so I went back again to get it checked out (appt #6). I got an inexperienced dental assistant who kept screwing up my x-rays over and over and over -- after three failed x-rays, I got concerned about all the radiation exposure (xray + fetus = not advised) and the assistant just gave up. That appointment confirmed that I needed to go back to have the root-canal repacked (appt #7). This time I got a dental assistant who couldn't get me numb. After four shots, I still wasn't fully numb -- "Looks like the baby's sucking up all that medicine!" she joked ... um, yikes? Dr. Zimmer finally appeared and got to work with barely a hello. Half way through the root canal re-treatment process, he was called away to do exams for other patients. In comes the first incompetent assistant to try his xray skills again. He failed, again. Ultimately, a more experienced assistant showed the guy how to do his job correctly, and I was told it would be another 10-20 minutes before the dentist came back because he was doing exams with three other patients (!!!). At this point, I would have walked out, if it weren't for the fact that my mouth was blocked open with a half-done root canal re-packing hanging out. Finally Dr. Zimmer returned, and got back to work. Despite all the shots, all of a sudden I'm in INSANE amounts of root pain, he says "Oops, looks like we broke through there," and gives me yet another shot (my 6th? I lost count). At this point, I started crying and sobbed my way through the rest of the appointment, which was already running over half an hour overtime. (Hi, parking ticket!) After another half hour, Dr. Zimmer started cleaning me up to leave ... and informed me that I need to return for another 90 minute appointment because "this is slow going." In other words, he ran out of time ... so I had to come back for my 8TH APPOINTMENT. To be fair, Dr. Zimmer's office made special efforts to accommodate my final appointment, but come on: EIGHT APPOINTMENTS to deal with complications from what was originally just an old filling falling out. I still think it's the most stylish dentistry office in town, but gorgeous art and an amazing view isn't going to fix a crown I'm not sure I needed that turned into a failed root canal, all topped off with incompetent dental assistants, and a rushed dentist with too many patients. I trust all of these people with everything and they never try to upsell/provide a service you don't need, which I found at many other dentists. Brittany is absolutely wonderful and always so cheery, Zimmer is absolutely incredible and provides patients plants (what dentist does that) and the best service/cleanliness/trust you would want in a dentist. I have been seeing Joseph Zimmer for nearly 2 years and never had a bad experience with him. Well, I didn't ever find the front desk staff to be friendly at all, which has always been a turn off from coming back. It wasn't until recently when I decided to get my wisdom teeth removed that I had the worst experience. I came in because I wanted to know what options were available to me. They sat me down and I waited for over an hour, only to have Dr. Zimmer come in for 2min, looks at my teeth, and tells me that they need to be removed. His assistant then gives me a sheet of the estimated costs. 2 weeks later I get a "consultation" bill that I thought was outrageous, especially for making me wait over an hour to only see him for less than 5min. If they are being shady with billing on "small" items like this, I can only imagine what this is like for bigger procedures, especially when they go bad. I ended up going with a dental surgeon instead and had such a better experience, with no shady charges. I've yet to decide if I am going to find a different dentist, this experience definitely put a sour taste in my mouth. From the sounds of other reviews, this place is perfect until something goes wrong, and then it becomes the worst place possible. read more

I have to say.....being that I have a phobia of going to the dentist in the first place, this experience did not help things whatsoever. First let me say, that I have not been to the dentist in several years, and as alarming as that may sound. I guess I have overcompensated with brushing very frequently, so my teeth look great, but for health concerns I knew I needed to go. When I stepped into the office I was greeted, and handed paperwork to fill out. When I was sitting down. I overheard one of the receptionist tell the dental assistant how long it had been for me, since I had last seen the dentist. The assistant said "Oh great", and they all kind of laughed at the assistant, as she was obviously annoyed, at having to deal with "my mouth". So then she returned and asked me to follow her, while I was going with her, a big black hairy cat was following us into the x-ray room. I stated to her that "there is a cat following us". She then replied that its the office cat. I told her that I was deathly allergic( yes deathly) to cats, she then picked it up in her arms, and said she would take it somewhere else. I said you don't understand, I can't even inhale the dander or have you touch me. With your hands in my mouth, after picking up a cat. Some people say that this place is clean. I beg to differ, and health related office should NEVER have cats much less other animals, that could cause allergic reactions. People do have allergies, and can become ill because of that. This place was horrible......it was a place I would highly suggest not going to, especially if you have cat allergies. read more

After checking out their offices a few weeks ago, I decided to give these guys a try. I'd been half-heartedly looking for a new dentist since February, and the ability to make appointments with them online really appealed to the antisocial hermit in me. I finally dealt with a super old filling that's needed replacement for several months, and I have to say-- MOST PAIN-FREE, HASSLE-FREE FILLING EVER! I cannot stress this enough. I am genetically cursed with crappy enamel and am no stranger to fillings. This was the first time I have ever been relaxed during the procedure-- without gas, too! It's all about their high tech tools. My #1 favorite: some sort of device that has a firm-yet-soft rubber bite block to keep your mouth as wide open as possible without having to worry about it constantly, a tongue deflector to keep the poor thing from getting mauled, fiber optic illumination to help the dentist see what's going on, and a suctioning tube at the rear of the bite block to keep you from needing to swallow or feeling like you're going to choke the whole time. Except for the unavoidable drilling bone-smoke thing, I felt like I could have almost taken a nap. Such a difference from every other filling I've ever gotten. Two hours later and I'm finally eating lunch without a numb face (I'd specifically asked for extra Novocaine because my body is annoyingly resistant sometimes). Feels great. They even looked into the bite problems I've been having with a crown I got in Palo Alto a few years ago (on the opposite side of my mouth), and reshaped the exterior without damaging it. I've been forcing myself to chew on it, and it seems a whole heck of a lot better, too. No awful twinging. I will DEFINITELY be back. read more

Let me first start with a story (actually two stories). 1: when I was six years old I fell off a chair and split my lip in two and needed six stitches in my mouth but was reluctant to the process so they tied me to a board and stuck needles in my mouth. 2: tragic roller hockey accident where I cracked my two front teeth at age 12. So now I'm scared to death of anyone placing instruments in my mouth. So when I moved to Seattle I was tasked to find a dentist that A: didn't want to put fake teeth in place of my cracked ones (totally healthy and cosmetically fine) and B: didn't freak me out. That said... Dr Zimmer is awesome. I love their approach. My hygienist is so sweet and friendly - and really good at her job. They really try hard to add nice touches to your visit. I have easy, healthy teeth - no cavities, no crowding, strong (though I could floss more frequently) - so I don't really need much besides biannual cleanings. Almost anyone can clean my teeth without fuss, but I appreciate the extras that Dr Zimmer's office provides, including: - a beautiful penthouse office with a panoramic view of the city - spacious, light, almost futuristic interior - distinctive glittery artwork of a scantily-clad woman clutching a tiger cub and descending from a helicopter. This is posted to the ceiling for patients to admire with their mouths open - attractive staff. This is a little weird, like they have some kind of affirmative action program for the beautiful. I've never seen a group of dental hygienists who are, collectively, a "7". The staff, along with the interior, makes the experience very "Minority Report"-like to me. Cleanings are easy and I'm usually in and out. The doctor only sees patients who have problems or have x-rays taken. So I only talk to him once a year. read more

UPDATE (4/23/08): a colleague and my parter went to Zimmer after me last week - both mentions of the brand spankin' new 18th floor space were passionate and rapturous (the beau likened it to the Ugly Betty office)....I may just have to schedule that filling re-do I've perpetually been putting off to check the space out before my next cleaning in October!!! - - - - - - - - - - Just went and had my teef cleaned and the office is going through some renovations. Apparently, there is an 18th floor that isn't identified in any signage or in the elevator, but Zimmer worked it out and is moving the bulk of his practice up there. The existing floor will eventually follow suit with its own makeover, but I'm thoroughly excited to see what the good doc has whipped up upstairs - seeing as how I'm a fan of his eye for hip art. EVER. seriously though. i decided to switch dentists after i was told i needed a lot of dental work done, including fillings on the left side of my face... which have magically vanished since my last set of xrays (read: i didnt really HAVE any UGH!). so i decided on zimmer after reading yelp and um. i got the best cleaning of my LIFE there. seriously.. no joke! of course the place is swank, and the art install above my head that went *sparkle sparkle* distracted me from the fact they were scraping the heck outta my mouth.. so. big plus. not to mention the whole online appointment thing...text message reminders. good for the technology friendly anti-social part of me! so if you have good insurance, and he's a contracted provider. Is this the spa or the Dentist? Dr. Zimmer's office is located in the pent house of the Medical Dental building and it is beautiful. Other plus, they have a cool cat that roams around the office. In addition, Dr. Zimmer is a great dentist and cares about your teeth looking great. At the age of 12, before my parents realized that I was extremely nonathletic, they enrolled me in softball. I lasted about 2 weeks before a softball collided with my mouth, resulting in root canals on my two front teeth. They looked OK for a while, but over the last 10 years or so, started to tint a dark blue color, making for a not so great smile. So, I decided to get my teeth crowned. The office staff was very efficient at getting my insurance quote to me and the procedure was not that bad. The thing about crowns is that it is very hard to make fake teeth (especially your two front teeth) look like real teeth and match your other teeth perfectly. It did take a couple of tries. The first set of crowns did not match properly. Dr. Zimmer made it very clear to me that he would do whatever it takes to make my teeth look perfect. I went to a lab and was given a bleaching kit at no extra cost. My teeth now look awesome and I am so happy. This is the first dentist I have ever been to that I do not dread. read more

Dr. Zimmer is just amazing. My and my wife have been seeing him for over 10 years and usually just do cleanings with the assistants with no problem. However, when things have gotten hairy, he has saved the day. I had a wisdom tooth taken out with him and no problem. I had two root canals and also no problem. One of his junior dentists was having problem with the crown and he stepped in and fixed it in a jiffy. My wife has had to have some protective gear and micro-surgeries and if there are any issues, he fixes them at no cost. You also have to love the art work in the ceiling! ha ha. read more

I've been extremely pleased with the service at Dr Zimmer's. From the first time I sat in the chair and looked up at the ceiling mural, I knew I liked this guy. Not only does he have some incredible, original artwork - he's a great dentist. After not going to the dentist for several years, I had to have a good amount of work done. He did a great job with all the work, explained what was going on and now half a year later, everything is still great. I especially enjoyed the foundation he started on behalf of a staff member. I love Dr. Zimmer. I've been coming here for the 6-month cleaning for a few years but recently had to have a bit more extensive work done and was even more impressed by the level of caring and dedication that he and his staff have to their patients. I had an "omg, my tooth hurts" moment a few weeks back and his staff fit me in without issue. A few weeks later, I had 3 wisdom teeth removed and after some painful complications, he [personally] texted me to make sure I was doing okay. Way to go the extra mile, Dr. Zimmer. Yes, his hygienists are hot. And yes, they wear bright pink gloves. And yes, he has racy artwork on the walls. And yes, his office is a swank loft-style space on the top floors of the dental building downtown. I'm not sure why other reviewers refer to these things as negatives. I think they all lend towards the overall awesome-ness of his office. Mostly though, he's gentle and caring and will stop what he's doing if you say you're experiencing any sort of pain. I've referred many people to Dr. Zimmer's office, and would recommend him without doubt to anyone that's looking for a dentist in the seattle area. read more

Brilliant crew. I love the experience and the quality of work here. This location used to be great for me when I worked in Fremont and lived south of Seattle since I could always get an easy appt on my way home. Now that I work in Renton... It's out of the way for me. But I'm more than happy to make the out-of-the-way trip to see Zimmer and his crew. read more

Dr. Zimmer was my primary dentist for over ten years, until I became disabled and could no longer afford him even though his prices are at the fair market rate. My experience throughout those 10yrs were without exception positive. Dr. Zimmer's knowledge is extensive and his state of the art equipment ensured all my procedures to be pain free and that includes extensive repair and finally, full extractions and Dentures. His office is scrupulously clean, air conditioned, and restful to the eye. He employs a staff that is well mannered and the Doctor will discuss all aspects of your procedure and what to expect before he begins. Some of the hateful reviews and name calling here deeply puzzle me after knowing the man for 10yrs and regard him as gentle, caring, sensitive, extremely knowledgeable of his profession and a true craftsman/artist in his work. I found his sense of humor, his cat and his roof garden, always encouraged a relaxed atmosphere. I highly recommend his services, especially nervous patients, who need quality work. read more

Stay away from this dentist! Dr. Zimmer is an unconscionable vitriolic man with very few redeeming qualities. My current dentist suggests that I sue him for malpractice. I am $4000.00 dollars into one tooth that he messed up so badly (read: 2 root canals and a very ugly cracked crown) that I'm going to have to have it pulled. The cat in the office is a health violation and a menace.The employees (all young blonds!) are a bunch of gossipy tarts. Moreover, he runs a 6 chair business alone! Have you ever had to wait in the chair till the novicaine wore off and then they begin work? I have....AND, when you are all done they want payment up front. This is one you should pass on. Doctor Zimmer will wow you with his modern technology, hot hygenists, and clever art. But you will soon learn that all of this is a flimsy camouflage for poor dentistry and an impersonal experience. I was Dr. Zimmer's patient for a long time. I always loved the beautiful offices and Dr. Z's friendly demeanor. Then, I cracked my tooth. This resulted in a complete debacle. He kept attempting heroic attempts at saving the tooth and doing his own implants. Three years, two implants, and over 10 surgeries later, I still have a wiggly, ugly fake tooth in my mouth. He was in over his head and put me through years of torture until finally admitting it and refunding my money. Do not be swayed by the beautiful decor... this guy is a hack! read more

The space is BEAUTIFUL. However, I do not go to the dentist for my viewing pleasure. Although most of the staff is friendly enough, they all have headsets and speak to each other as if they are air traffic controllers. You get the feeling that they forget they are actually working on a conscious person who would prefer that they pay attention to what is going on in their mouth as opposed to figuring out how to efficiently fill the two floors of dentist chairs and spread the doctor out among the disproportionately large number of patients. Beyond the unprofessional, yet beautiful climate, I cannot tolerate poor work that has to be redone. Unless you are only getting a cleaning (don't let them suggest you get any other work), I would stay far away from Dr. Zimmer. read more
