My wife and I were looking for a breakfast that would satisfy us long enough to be able to spend hours at the beach without needing to make moves because we were hungry, but not so heavy that we would feel gross at the beach. Josh's to the rescue!!! Salmon tomago omelette was game changing. For reals, get that omelette! And eggs over easy with a latke. Why does anyone bother with hash browns?! Latke [greater than] hash browns! Josh was cooking that day and was incredibly pleasant. If you can manage the few tables outside it's a lovely vantage point on neighborhood people watching. And when we got the check they asked if we'd like to take the rest of our coffee and iced tea to go. Love it! Josh's Deli is a little hole in the wall located in Surfside. Seriously, you'll almost miss it walking by. The restaurant is extremely small and can probably fit about 20 people at a time, but it is very nicely decorated. We came on a Sunday around 12 and only had to wait about 5 minutes, which was surprising. They make their own juices, I tried the OJ and it was very fresh. We started off with the Spicy Tuna Latkes which were fantastic. Definitely the best part of the meal. I went with the Soft shell Crab Sandwich which was awesome and my boyfriend got the Corned beef benediction which was equally as awesome. We came here after a morning ride in Oleta Park. What a great experience it was. The coffee is amazing, I was hesitant about ordering a cold brew, I am glad I did. Best glass of cold brew I have ever had. Food wise, the pleasantries kept coming. We had the Tuna Latkes. What great taste and mix of flavors. We also had the hamachi bagels and the dry age steak latke. The steak was cooked to perfection, and the mix of spices on the hamachi really kicked it up a notch. We came with three other people, they had the French onion omelette, the cured salmon omelette and the French toast. Nothing but raves all around. Hands down the best breakfast/lunch/brunch spot on the beach, and one of the best overall restaurants I've ever been to. Almost everything is homemade: the pastrami, corned beef, house cured lox, bagels, breads, etc. The portions are perfectly sized and Josh constantly experiments and changes the menu with all sorts of delicious concoctions. If you sit at the bar (which is highly recommended), you can savor in delight by watching Josh prepare everything. As for the food: the corned beef benediction is to die for, the deli sandwiches are outstanding, the breakfast burrito (when available) puts most Mexican spots to shame, the Mexican dragon is absurd, the pancake is incredible, and the ever changing french toast never disappoints. You can't go wrong. Don't forget to ask for crack sauce. Also, the cold brew alone is worth the trip. read more

I went to Josh's because of its excellent yelp rating and read various articles on the internet singing its praise. On a Sunday morning we wanted to get order take out and I was told we had to share a menu because the restaurant didn't have enough menus. We had 1 corn beef and 1 pastrami sandwich. The meat was dry in both sandwiches, corn beef being the drier of the two. I felt like I needed to keep adding mustard because it was so dry. I hadn't been here in a while, but as soon as you walk in Josh welcomes you and everyone is super friendly. They make you feel right at home. And the food... THE FOOD! I love that this place is so laid back, no need for pretense, it's just a spot for awesome food. They open at 8:30am and on Sundays you really need to get in early because there aren't many tables and the bar fills up quickly. By the time we left, a little before 10am, the place was packed. While I'm a die hard fan of the Corned Beef Benediction, today I went with something new on the menu: pork belly and potato cacio e pepe... OMG to die for, and since it isn't a menu staple I suggest you get it while you can. The pancakes and French toast are always good options, and they switch them up constantly with different toppings, fillings, etc. Today the French toast had a blackberry compote and foie gras streusel... AVOID! AVOID! I had high hopes for this deli and I really hate doing bad reviews for anyone but this one is well deserved. I ordered their specialty bone marrow burger. I specifically discussed with the waiter that I wanted it cooked medium well. Once it was served I realized it was completely raw on the inside. I brought it up them but they didn't care all I got was an explanation that that is how I ordered it. Josh is doing good things up at the former-original Chow Down location. Now converted into a not-so-traditional Jewish deli, Josh is serving up corned beef, pastrami, smoked fish, and matzo ball soup - all made in house. The latkes are good - very crispy - and served the traditional way with apple sauce or amped up with smoked salmon and caviar. We tried both. The caviar is actually salmon roe, which is quite delicious nonetheless. I liked both versions, but would probably lean toward the traditional apple sauce on future visits. My friends each got a scrambled eggs dish - one with veggies, one with pastrami. Each ordered the bagel (also homemade) on the side, and we all agreed these were the best bagels we'd had in a long time! We also got a side of the whitefish salad, which I thought was pretty good, especially on one of those bagels. I tried the half & half combo with matzo ball soup and a half pastrami sandwich, on rye with mustard, natch. It was great. The matzo ball was more hard than fluffy, but had tons of flavor, and the soup was delish too. The pastrami was great - though a little too fatty for me in some parts. They did offer to lean it up for me, but I declined - something to consider for next time. Josh also sent out a new matzo ball creation he's working on for us to try - a deep-fried matzo ball stuff with cream cheese and jalapenos, served with a chipotle mayo dipping sauce. It was awesome! The service was incredibly friendly - our waiter was happy to give us more information about the menu offerings, and answer all our questions. They also have Dr. Brown's sodas, so bonus Jewish deli points for that. lunch at Josh's Deli on Sun. Dec. 2nd, with 3 other foodie buddies. South Florida guys. They are all active on my "Ellen Loves Pastrami" group on Facebook. I am very serious about my pastrami, lol ! And, so is Miami Yelper, Donald T., who was with me. ; (his review is on here, as well.) I flew down from Atlantic City for the weekend, with this deli "meat up" to be my highlight. The first red flag was there was no toilet paper in the bathroom. Not even one sheet left. Along with no paper towels. I immediately told Josh, & he quickly corrected that blooper. The matzoh ball soup broth did not have much "chicken-y" flavored taste. And, there was too much sage in it. But, I really enjoyed the ball :)! The potato pancakes had a nice homemade appeal to them. Along with an Interesting shape. They were a little burnt in spots, but most bites were crispy/tasty. Certainly very unique, anyway. Most would not think this was "eye candy" due to the dark look, aka burnt spots. I had read some real good reviews about Josh's pastrami, but my experience was very disappointing. The pastrami was cold & tough. Not ICED cold, but cold. The rye bread was nothing special, and tasted like it was on it's way out . I returned the pastrami, & the gal gladly gave me a corned beef /turkey combo instead. The corned beef was a big winner for me !! It tasted like the pastrami SHOULD'VE. (I've attached pics of all my items ). Nice thick slices, good texture. Good smoke rings. The turkey was decent, with a homemade taste. BUT, it would've been a lot better if it wasn't served ICED cold. It must've come right out of any extra cold FRIDGE . Service was extra slow, as it took 40 minutes for our soups to come out. I've been to many Jewish delis since my stepmom is Jewish, but this was the worst l've been to. My food was ok, not great. I ordered the eggs, "toast", and bacon. I asked for egg whites scrambled and they charged me an extra dollar for that. Basically l asked them to hold the yolks, so why l got charged extra...well that was a first for me. Soda is served by the can so note: no free refills here. The menu just said "toast" not that it was rye or any specific type, but it was rye, which l don't care for. I asked the waitress if l could have another type of toast, since it wasn't specified on the menu or l would've asked to substitute it for something else like another person in our group did. She said they had nothing else and walked away. Not very hospitable, especially when my husband ordered the eggs Benedict and his did not come on rye...she could've at least asked if l'd like something else, but she couldn't be bothered, which was the whole tone of her service. My husband said to the waitress, "l think l would like some coffee." To which she snarkily responded, "Do you think or do you know?" Ummmm yeah, based on her alone, we won't be back. Add in everything else, definitely not! The bathroom, bar, and floors are absolutely filthy! The chairs are very unsteady and stick to the floors' gunk! Josh himself mans the grill and has cliche banter with his guests, the ones who must be regulars and wouldn't dare to ask if they had salads. It's a tiny spot, a few tables and a counter. Could be fun if not for the general air of snobiness and trying too hard to be an east village cool dive in surfside. I ordered a jewban for my husband to go, he said it was pretty good. Love this place. Yes, they run out of food. Yes, it's small and it can be hard to get a table. But I can easily overlook that for another taste of the corned beef eggs Benedict I had on Saturday. The homemade corned beef was almost carmlized. The hollandaise sauce eas not too rich to accompany the corned beef. The bread was so much better than what you typically find in Miami. We also got the Boston creme French toast. Two pieces of French toast with Boston creme filling between them and covered in chocolate sauce. This was so rich we couldn't finish it. But it was amazing. I'm glad we had something savory to balance it out. I've also been for dinner. Everything is made with Carr and attention to detail. Josh's Delicatessen is hands down one of the absolute best deli's I've ever had the pleasure of visiting. From their delicious fresh made sandwiches, to their perfectly cooked French Fries and small cafe charm, Josh's would stand out among the best New York Deli's, and is located over 1500 miles away. I came in to Josh's for lunch a little past 12:30 Friday with a few co-workers. Having passed by the location several times before while getting dinner in the area, I always wanted to stop in, but as the restaurant closes early everyday at 3:30 PM, I never had the chance until today. There is limited seating at Josh's, with about 10 stools lining the bar, and around 4 tables at the front of the restaurant. Although seating may be hard to find at times, it's well worth the wait. Two employees worked the main floor of the restaurant, with one taking orders and ringing guests out, and the other working the grill. So much love and care goes into the food created here, with everything from the pastrami and coleslaw to the bread and pickles made in house. All sandwiches are served with the slaw and a pickle, as well as your choice of either a salad or French Fries. My co-workers and I all ordered the Pastrami Reuben with fries, and what an amazing sandwich it was. According to the cook, the house made Rye bread is a new addition to the menu, as they just started producing it this week. From the taste of it though, it felt as if they've been doing it for years. Soft, sour rye with a nice crunch from frying it with butter. The pastrami was incredibly flavorful, nice large, thick cut slices of juicy meat that clearly had been slow cooking for sometime before being finished off on the flat top. The French Fries were also fantastic, and had a nice house blend seasoning on top with what tasted like salt & parsley. Service was both friendly and fast, with food coming to the table in under 15 minutes, and our water glasses were never empty. I will definitely try to return to Josh's again before I leave Surfside, and hope to try their breakfast during the coming weekend. read more

The embarrassment of Surfside- Yelp, you did me wrong. It's not often you do but you did this time. This joke of an establishment has me wondering about the line out front. My experience went like this: I walked in and asked if I can order to go. I met with a very nervous waitress who really didn't the answer to this question. It seemed like no one ever asked her this and she didn't know the answer so she asked another person, named "Josh". They told me they can make me a sandwich but it will take 30 minutes. I asked for a pastrami sandwich with just mustard and tomato. They asked me if I wanted the tomato on the sandwich. Um, yeah. She repeated back, "Ok, well, we can put it on the side" What I got was a Pastrami sandwich, cheese (which I specifically asked them to not include), and sauerkraut on the side. The sauerkraut was really lousy compared to others I've had. The whole affair was $19.90 and 35 minutes. I opened the box and gave the sandwich to a man sitting on the beach. Had Sunday brunch at Josh's Delicatessen & Appetizing. Shared the Krunchy Spicy Tuna Latkes, Lobster Omelette, and Corned Beef Benediction. Quality The food at Josh's Deli is absolutely delicious. I enjoyed every single item I tried and I loved how they developed new spins on deli and breakfast standards. The meal started with the Krunchy Spicy Tuna Latkes. Probably my favorite item of the meal, they took delicious and crispy latkes, smeared on some sriracha cream cheese, then layered tuna and topped it off with pickled onions. Everything about the bite was great and do expect a little zing. Next out was the Lobster Omelette. While I enjoyed this item, I was not the biggest fan of the additional fillings of melted leeks and mushrooms. It left the omelette with a less than appealing texture as it was slimy and watery. The taste worked, but it was not the most pleasant to eat. Last we enjoyed the Corned Beef Benediction. They took two bagels surrounded them with potatoes, peppers, onions, and corned beef, then topped it off was two poached eggs and drizzled on hollandaise. I think the bagels were unnecessary and in rough shape because of the sogginess of everything on top, but everything else about the dish worked. The corned beef was incredible and the hollandaise was perfect. Quantity The Krunchy Spicy Tuna Latkes were on the smaller side, but both of our other dishes were plentiful. The Corned Beef Benediction easily fills you up and the Lobster Omelette was sizable as well. Value It is a little pricier brunch, but for the quality of the food I believe it was worth it. Most dishes run between $15 and $20, but they are a good size and taste great. Ambiance Josh's Deli is located in Surfside, north of Miami Beach. It sits on a quiet stretch of road with other small restaurants and shops. The space is very small with some indoor seating and then two tables outside. Inside, much of the area is taken up by the kitchen. A few small tables sit near the front and then some bar seating goes along the open kitchen. The decor is relatively simple with pictures and some plants. Since no seats were open inside we ended up at the skinny high-top table outside. They also had one additional table, but it too was in use. There may have been some music playing inside, but outside it was very quiet. It is just a simple deli spot that serves up some tasty food. Crowd The restaurant was busy during Sunday brunch. When we arrived all the tables inside were taken as was the table outside. We ended up sitting at the skinny hightop outside rather than choosing to wait for a table. The crowd was mostly couples and small groups of friends. It also seemed like a lot of locals as the servers seemed to know most of the guests by name. Service The biggest disappointment of the meal was the poor service. Despite suggesting the outside seats, the two servers did not seem to have any interest in checking on us. We had to go inside twice to flag someone down and we also spent most of the meal with our glasses empty. The other group outside had the same problem. Even though it is a busy spot, the restaurant is small enough that they should have done a better job. Parking There is street parking outside the restaurant as well as a large public lot one block west. Extra Josh's Deli is a solid brunch spot. While the space is small and the service is not the best, the food itself more than makes up for it. The food was outstanding! A little pricey for what I was expecting, but it is ALL handmade/homemade cured meats and food, and it is located right in Surfside down from the Saks fifth. We came here because my mom was wanting old fashioned, real, Jewish food, like they use to have In Miami at Wolfies. Well Wolfies isn't around anymore, and this place might be your best bet for good jewish food. However, it is not "old fashioned" - in fact it's very "new school", a modern take on many good Jewish recipes. (For example I got the corned beef hash and eggs as shown in the picture) Josh is the owner and he still works here, but he was out while we were there- interestingly the two workers were talking about him like he was their friend and they seemed to be happy to work there. Which is a big deal really. We were all looking at this one picture they have in the restaurant and they were like "woah is that Josh?! I've never seen him in that picture! A new-age hipster take on traditional Jewish deli food, Josh's deli runs with the motto "deli food gone wrong" but they are truly doing a lot of things right. My wife and I were staying at the St. Regis Bal Harbor and we're looking for a big deli breakfast to satisfy our craving. We read reviews for Josh's and decided we needed to go. After walking by the location a few times (sign is very small) we finally located the hidden gem. We sat immediately at an open table but were not greeted by a waitress until about 5 minutes later. We were then provided menus and perused over Josh's take on some Jewish classics. Feeling like we couldn't go wrong with any choice we both chose the three egg meal that comes with a homemade latke and we substituted our toast for a fresh hand-rolled bagel. Being a juicer I also appreciated the restaurant having several options for fresh cold-pressed juices. I selected my favorite: carrot and apple. Our food arrived several minutes later and we immediately dug in. The scrambled eggs were perfectly cooked and topped with what looked like parsley. The latke was deep fried and absolutely delicious. The real star of the plate in my opinion was the fresh hand rolled everything bagel. You could certainly taste the freshness in each bite and my only request was that the bagel never ended. Josh's deli didn't get the 5th star because the service was a bit lacking. Our waitress, while very kind, was clearly overmatched dealing with 5-6 tables all by herself. I would recommend having at least a 2 person wait staff to better accommodate Josh's growing fan base. I would certainly return to try the latke with ahi tuna and Siracha cream cheese. read more

Perfectly Poached I stumbled upon this gem of a restaurant while I was photographing Surfside Beach in North Miami Beach. This was my first time at Josh's and also my first time visiting Bal Harbour. It's a gorgeous little place, beautifully decorated. Josh and a lovely server were still preparing for the day when I strolled in. She charmingly recommended the corned beef benediction for breakfast, and I could not refuse. It was a good thing, too. The benediction was delivered shortly thereafter, my coffee was still hot and steamy. What delighted me most were the two perfectly poached eggs perched on top of the mound of corned beef, home fries, and onions. It's sooo hard to find perfect eggs these days. I threw a little Tabasco on it, because I like things spicy ;), and then made quick work of the dish, scraping it clean. Guess I was pretty hongry. I did not linger for very long, and the little place was filling quickly as I left that morning, but Josh took the time to chat with me while he prepared the next meals. I will definitely eat here again, it's the type of place you go out of your way for. Get there early before the rush, plus it's a nice and peaceful way to start the day. read more

We were in Surfside visiting for a few days and went to several places to eat although Josh's Deli was hands down the best. Everything was delicious, the service was great, and the restaurant was comfortable to hang out at. My only complaint is that there isn't a Josh's Deli where I live in northern Virginia. Next time we are in MB we will be back. read more
