we ordered takeout today and one of our meals was incorrect. When I called to request the correct meal the person taking phone orders informed me that I was incorrect and I was given exactly what I ordered. My speech is not always clear, so I asked them to place an order for chicken lo mein. (I received chicken chow mein, they sound close, I figured I just didn't annunciate well.) the person on the phone said they were to busy to talk to me and tried to hang up. I said "no..no.. wait I will pay for the lo mein"! She said she would not take my order and have someone call me back. she hung up on me. She also didn't take my phone number . My husband drove back up to the Joy Garden. (I really wanted the lo mein) He also attempted to order the chicken lo mein, unfortunately he is devilishly handsome and they recognized him! The person working said she could not take his order and he needed to talk to the manager,but she was too busy to talk to him. My husband stated that he would just pay for the meal and did not want a refund. He just wanted the lo mein. But they still refused to take his order. They also have not called us back. long story short we did not get any lo mein. They have really good lo mein, if they will let you order it. read more

Setting: Located at the end of a strip mail on the main street in Forest Lake, parking lot is on the smaller side. Atmosphere: We just ordered takeout but they also have regular restaurant seating, the space looked clean and bright. Service: We just ordered a few food items for take out, food was estimated to be ready in 15 minutes from time of call, and 6pm on a Saturday night. When we got there for pick up in 15 minutes, food was ready. Food: Okay so my friend and I were really craving some joyous amounts of Chinese food. Our total order was: Sweet/sour chicken-sauce on the side and that also came with pork fried rice and an egg roll, sesame chicken also with pork fried rice and an eggroll, chicken lo mein, and two orders of 8pc wontons. I tried a little of everything, my sesame chicken had absolutely ZERO flavor, highly disappointing! Pork fried rice was similar to the "fried rice" at panda, super blah. Chicken lo mein had a little flavor but not much. The wontons and the egg rolls were DELISH! My friend enjoyed her sweet/sour chicken. Total price was around $30 for all that which is okay, a little more than some other Asian places I get takeout from. Drink: N/A Future visit? My family really liked getting take out from here but due to their recent price hike we can no longer justify ordering from here. We would spend around $45 two to three times a month, to get the same amount of food it now costs right at $60. So now instead of $90 to $135 from us every month they will get $0, zilch, nil zero. Sushi was terrible-- not the absolute worst I've ever had, but darn near close. As bad as the food was, the service was worse-- the server had zero social skills and couldn't answer basic questions about the menu. I needed to verify that none of the rolls contained fake crabmeat-- he then told me that Boston Roll contained crabmeat (it contains shrimp, not crabmeat) Also, there was barely any fish/shrimp in the rolls-- and what was there wasn't particularly fresh. This place is a neighborhood gem . Forest Lake doesn't have a lot of options for dining that are quality but not fancy. so sick of fried food and burger joints in this town!! Joy Garden has really hit the nail on head with finding a niche for what this town NEEDS! I love it that they finally started to add some Thai options to the menu. And the recent remodel/addition helps with the demand. I have an actually Dined in at this place. I've only came into grab a take out numerous times and of course forgot to check in the other 99 times I've been here. The sushi is pretty great it's not my favorite of all time. But when I get that it's for sushi it fits the bill . My favorite things to order are sesame chicken combo which comes with fried rice and egg roll. Being a seafood lover I am absolutely obsessed with their seafood cream cheese wontons. I'm a fan of regular wontons but add the crab and I'm in! I left Joy Garden very happy. I was not blown away by the food. It's solid, just not great. We got a california roll and the Triple Szechuan Delight. The sushi was fine. I was happy to find that the rice was not too thick (on the outside of the roll) for a change. Because it was under the House Chef Special section, I thought the Triple Szechuan Delight would be special (or spicy), but not so much. And it even had a pepper icon next to the dish on the menu... Why the four stars then? One word: Service! Amazing service from one super competent, helpful but not cloying server. She let us take our time deciding what to order, was there instantly when the menus were put down, did like three check-backs but they were quick - not annoying. She was the only server there and handling all the tables (about 8) on a busy Friday night. She was also the cashier and take out coordinator (answering phones and packing up orders). When we went to the register to pay, I asked her how she did all of that with such a big smile on her face, and she said that she loves what she does and is just super happy to be there. De-lish! Everything I've had here is so good! The portions are generous, the prices are very reasonable, and the place is clean. The staff is pretty friendly - nothing to complain about. I don't know what else you could ask for! They recently expanded their dining area. The new area looks more like a restaurant than the main seating in the takeout area, which I think is a great improvement. We've come back here several times and have always had a good experience. The sesame bean curd (aka tofu) is a favorite of ours for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. This is a great takeout place and good for a casual meal if you want to eat in the restaurant. If you're looking for a great "vibe," this might not be the place for you. But if you're hungry and are looking for some delicious Asian food in the area, the food here hits the spot. read more

We come here fairly often and have never had an issue with the food. The food is very good and I would give the food alone a 4 star rating, but that is not the purpose of this particular review. Today, a Tuesday, we walked in and were told to seat ourselves. The place had 3tables in service at the time. Our drink order was taken. We sat and waited for our drinks while others walked in behind us, seated, received their drinks and food orders taken. To go containers and bills given to another table, and the "How is everything?" to another table, and the last table was at the peak of enjoying their meal. Meanwhile, we are sitting without a drop in front of us. We waited an additional 5 minutes thinking perhaps our drinks were coming. Nope. The last we saw our server she was taking an order on yet another table that came on behind us. We gave up and left and went to Norman Quacks and received excellent food and service. Joy Garden, your servers need additional training/experience or learn to prioritize more effectively. We will not continue to patronize a place if the service isn't as it should be. read more

Ate here for the first time after a recommendation from my niece. It is a small place that knows how to please. The waitress gave us good advice on what to order and gave us a choice of free wontons or egg rolls because our order was over $30. All four in our party were extremely pleased with our orders. The soup and tea were served hot; the entrees delicious and generous; and the service top rate. If you're not worried about ambience and want a great meal, this is the place to come. My husband and I just discovered this place a couple of months ago, but we have eaten here about once a week since then. We always order one of the special sushi rolls and they have been really, REALLY delicious! Can't say much about the standard Chinese menu, because we usually order one of the Thai dishes. I work in Forest Lake so we eat here about twice a month. The General Tso is delicious, as is the garlic and broccoli. The portions are ginormous, but that's kind of expected at Chinese restaurants, the staff is always very friendly and the prices are what's expected.
