Here because my son's water polo team went to a breakfast place while my hubby wanted Mexican breakfast. The photos looked good. They offered American breakfast options as well. Service is good. We walked in and was offered a table right away. We asked to sit outside which was better if you're there on a nice sunny day. Inside can be a bit stuffy. Chips and salsa are not free but it's only $1.75. We picked up the chips at the self serve but had to wait for the salsa to come out with our meal. Hmm. My hubby ordered the chorizo con huevo with beans & rice and tortillas. Great flavor. I ordered the crispy taco with buche. The menu says "fried pork" and I confirmed with the waitress that it's "pork belly." She said yes. So my taco arrived and it was not pork belly. Take note: Buche is pork STOMACH! Wah! I placed another order of a crispy taco but with carnitas instead. (Hubby ate the buche.) The taco came with sour cream, lettuce and tomatoes. The crispy shell was homemade. Pretty good. Former Los Charros restaurant still reliably cranking out the best Mexican food in Mountain View! All the chairs still say Los Charros. Pay at the register when you're ready. Chips and salsa are no longer complementary :( The Pollo Asada is still the best I've ever had, and is the baseline I measure all other grilled chicken against. The Carnitas is just perfect. Salty, juicy, crispy on the edges, packed with flavor. Can't go wrong adding it to nachos, tacos, ect... I tried the Quesaberria, a relatively new menu item. We came here late at night on a Sunday and surprisingly it was still open even though a lot of the other restaurants were closed. I actually really enjoyed the food here as well as the environment and the service. I ordered the shrimp taco and the beef taco and really enjoyed both of them as the meat was delicious and fresh. The place is your typical typical Taqueria . They advertise a special for their tacos on Tuesday. But when you try to order the special, they have a lot of exceptions like shrimp and beef are not included . But what really bothered me were the following : First, I didn't love that the person preparing the guacamole was also eating it as he was preparing it. I'm really big on sanitation so that grossed me out. Aren't their rules to prevent this from happening? Second, I ordered the shrimp enchiladas. I don't know what they did with the shrimp, but they tasted horrible. I ended up taking out all of the shrimp and just eating their enchiladas without it. They overcharged me for my takeout order, thinking I wouldn't notice. I ordered one item to go. I noticed that the price was higher than on the menu so I called them out on it. They ended up fixing the error. I did not love that the cashier was supervising me while I put the tip on the receipt. I gave her a 15% but really they deserved much less. Came to La Espuela on a rainy day in Mountain View. Ordered an al pastor burrito, very tasty and solid for the price - would order it again. We also got some nacho chips too which plated well with the meal. The staff was nice and our food came out pretty quickly. There were a few parties inside and the inside decor was very nicely dressed in traditional Mexican colors and artwork. If you want a quick meal at a Mexican restaurant on Castro, I'd recommend checking out La Espuela for a bite. read more

I've been to DTMV countless times, and I never knew this restaurant existed. I just happened to see it when I parked in the lot behind it. I was heading to a different restaurant, but when I saw this, I decided to give them a try. I ordered the enchilada plate. It comes with 3 enchiladas with your choice of red, green or mole sauce, rice, beans, lettuce, guacamole, and sour cream. I went with red sauce. The red sauce was good, but I should've tried the mole tho. Next time. I also asked to have one with cheese, chicken, and carnitas. Food came out pretty quick, under 10 minutes. I came here with a recommendation from a coworker and had high hopes. The initial experience upon walking in is pleasing. The store feels authentic and the staff was kind to offer any questions I had. Thoughts on the food. I ordered the veggie burrito and highly enjoyed the snacking experience (it was also pretty big). My wife had me order her the Canasta (a fried flour tortilla bowl with refried beans, meat, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, guacamole & sour cream), it sounded great and similar to what we've had at other Mexican restaurants. While eating the Canasta we noticed an odd almost cleaning supply or soapy taste to the fried tortilla bowl and my wife said the meat didn't taste quite right which led her to only eat half before mentioning it was upsetting her stomach. We definitely still want to give this place another try as my food was tasty (the bowl may have been a fluke) and it's relatively close to where we live, although it might be a little while before we return. If you're thinking of going here and are in the area I'd say give it a shot, but I would also like to try a few other local spots first. read more

In the area of $20 burritos, it's hard to find a taqueria like this one. The chips and salsa aren't free but you're not missing out. The chips are pretty thick if you like on the crunchy/thick side. The taco with pastor was really nice cause of the crispy tortilla and the pastor was crunchy/flavorful. The super nachos were aright, more of a fan for thinner chips. Yeah this place is nothing special. I came here on the recommendation of my main man Khoi, who doesn't exactly have the best track record for food recs. I ordered a wet burrito, one of my favorite Mexican dishes, and it was not bad. It was stuffed to the brim with meat, cheese, rice, and more. The salsa that was on top was decently tasty but a bit bitter from all of the roasted peppers. The service here is actually pretty good. The guy at the front was super friendly and answered my questions about the menu. The venue is a bit jank, very cramped and kinda hot inside. They do have the cool Mexican tables and chairs, but overall not the best dining experience. The main reason I can't rate this restaurant too highly is the price. It's significantly more expensive than your average Mexican spot. I guess it's too be expected of Mountain View, especially the Castro Street area, but still, in my experience, the cheaper Mexican food is, the better it tastes lol. Looking back, Taqueria La Espuela is an average Mexican spot that doesn't stand out from the crowd of restaurants in Mountain View. Enough talk. read more

My go to is the regular breakfast burrito with carne Asada. It has the perfect ratio of all the ingredients in it and it is BIG! Los Charros has been the neighborhood taqueria for as long as I can remember -- at least since 1996. And they've been serving super-sized burritos with good ingredients all that time. I don't know the backstory as to why the restaurant is now called La Espuela but the chairs still have Los Charros engraved in them, so that's good enough for me. The inside is pretty small (6-8 tables) and there are 3 more outside. Custom burritos in 4 steps: 1. Choose flour, spinach, wheat, or tomato tortillas. Spinach looks and tastes good and makes me feel like I'm being a bit healthier. 2. Choose your meat. There's something like 10 choices -- I'm partial to pollo asado (chicken) and al pastor (pork). 3. Choose style (regular/super/jumbo). Super adds guacamole, cheese, and sour cream in addition to the Regular rice, beans, and salsa. Jumbo includes lettuce and tomato. 4. Amp it up by ordering it "Wet Style." Adds green salsa and cheese on the top, finished in the oven. MUST try at least once. Lots of flexibility in ordering tacos too. The crispy carnitas taco is excellent. Fair warning: both the shell and the pork are fried. The super taco chile verde is another fav. Newcomers take note: Chips & salsa is $1.75 and they assume you know it (it's on the menu and on the chips station). Refills are free. Like everything else in Mtn View, prices have risen over the last few years. Still -- big portions and fair prices. It may not be my favorite taqueria in the Bay Area but the staff is friendly and the food is good. I'll keep coming back. read more

Was visiting a friend in the area and had a few errands to run around DTMV. I was craving Mexican food so found this cute little taqueria. I'm surprised at the reviews as everything was wonderful. They have outdoor and limited indoor seating. My boyfriend and I sat inside (among 3 other small groups). There was a table in between each group for social distancing. We ordered the chips & salsa ($1.91) (two types, a red and pico de gallo). Both salsas had a nice flavor -- fresh with a little kick but not spicy. I also ordered a melon agua fresca ($2.95) made with cantaloupe -- it includes some pulp which I personally enjoy! For my food, I ordered the taco plate with carnitas. I love how the strips of pork have a perfect crisp to each bite. The taco plate ($7.50) comes with one taco, rice, and beans, and was filling and just right for a lunch serving. 2/6/2021 La Espuela Taqueria 854 W Dana St. Mountain View, CA 94040 I called in for the Carne Asada Dinner for pickup. The box was ready when I got there. The dinner came with the usual accompaniment of tacos, rice, beans, guacamole, sour cream, lettuce garnish and the beef. Instead of thin slices of beef this place gives you large flat thin fillets which is not what I expected. The beef was too well done but my fault, I always forget to tell the place my level of doneness which for me is on the rare side. The beef was also a little chewy, which is why it should be sliced thinly across the grain. The sides were okay but not memorable. Quantity was generous. This dish is about the only thing I can order at Mexican places due to my severe lactose intolerance. If they used a slice of beef with the thickness of the two fillets then sliced across the grain, it would be better. Overall a disappointment and no repeat. read more
