Whipping Joy Small coffee and sandwich shop in Lower Nob Hill, that also has quite a selection of baked goods, as well. We were staying nearby and both needed an afternoon pick-me-pick-me-up and decided to give this place a whirl. The Good: *Both of our drinks were good and had good flavor. The peanut butter cream latte especially had a good mix of peanut flavor with the coffee to make it like a little dessert. *Bamboo Latte had good matcha flavor and little to no sweetness, which is how I like it. The Meh: *There was one guy working the register and being the barista all at once and he really seemed to hate his job. Which is ironic given the name of the establishment. *Please make sure to tell them "for here" if you're planning on staying to drink your coffee. Otherwise, they automatically will put it in a plastic cup and you know how we really need more of those in the trash. The Ugly: *Overall the store interior was grungy and unclean. We're not usually the type of people to gripe about a little dust, but the floor had huge dust bunnies, dead flies, and ants taking care of said flies. Dude.....after visiting SF during an abnormal intense heat wave earlier this month, I should shut up about heat waves in the Sacramento area lol. The rather delirium-inducing high humidity in SF at the time made me and my sis search for any cool-food spots in close vicinity, and, wow, the bingsoo here......one of the best that I've had. It uses silk thread shaved ice, which makes the ice even *more* melt-in-your-mouth. We particularly had the mango cheesecake thread shaved ice and although it's kinda silly that it has a thick cheesecake slab on top of the shaved ice (very YouTube-mukbang-esque lol) it made the whole bingsoo filling. Also, major props that the mango chunks are freshly cut and perfectly ripe!!! We also had the triple berry waffle. Amazingly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Not overly sweet either. The fruit in this one also tasted like it was fresh off of a farmers market. Overall very quite pleased on both desserts. Lots of care seemed to be put into them. Restaurant-tier for sure but at a low-key mom-and-pop cafe.....kinda like the best of both worlds. :p read more

Joy's place is well decorated cafe that's open late with excellent Wi-Fi. I stopped by for my go-to - an iced latte - and the beans left a mixed feeling with me. My initial taste and texture descriptions were burnt, sweet, and slightly watery. They boasted a bitter, nutty profile that had the lightest tinge of sweet from the milk. Something feels missing from the base flavor profile, and nothing quite "pops" - almost like the they're are fighting to be featured. The cup itself was also quite tiny for what it was worth. To access the Wi-Fi, you'll have to ask for the password, or it's printed out on a receipt. The staff member assisting me was not too welcoming and felt disgruntled that I had asked. The Wi-Fe is - as advertised - quite fast, and their winter theme was an enjoyable, relaxing environment to work in. I sent my boyfriend to get me a drink. Long story short, he got me exactly what I wanted, a green tea latte with almond milk and he was so happy about it because originally, I had wanted a decaf white mocha with almond milk (but this place does not serve decaf or something like that). But since he knows I usually go for a matcha latte (or green tea latte) if the first option isn't available, he felt confident with his choice and even tipped the barista/cashier (total $8.25 including the tip) When the drink was ready, my boyfriend double-checked that it was made with almond milk, as he had specifically requested from the beginning. The barista had even repeated and confirmed the order. But when my boyfriend asked again, the barista admitted he had forgotten to use almond milk. My boyfriend kindly asked if they could remake it with almond milk, but the barista said, "No, because I'll have to charge you for another drink if I change it." My boyfriend was very disappointed by this response. He quietly placed the drink back on the counter, left it there, and walked out. This kind of thing has happened to me several times at different coffee shops even at Starbucks and Peet's. But they would politely apologize and remake your drinks. I just can't fathom why a barista would insist on charging again when the mistake was theirs in the first place. It was our first time at this coffee shop, and it'll probably be our last. It's a shame because it was such a cute place, but we were very disappointed in their customer service. read more

The only thing I wish didn't happen was that the bread got soggy from all the good stuff. I became curious and wondered what it would be like to have this on Dutch crunch bread...probably as amazing. My mouth is watering just imagining the moment I opened that box...the aromas. It was like Korean bbq without the smell lingering on me. Oh; and what happened to the sandwich you ask? There are many small coffee shops/ breakfast places in the Lower Nob Hill area. I think this one is one of the lower priced one where you can still get a cup of coffee for about $3. Their breakfast sandwiches are also reasonably priced around $7. Cute and clean place; service is fast.... somehow they seem less busy than most other places in the morning. Menu seems a bit limited with fewer selections than other places. Did not try their "main attraction" - the Croffle as it was too early for ice cream. Popped in here for a quick lunch on a Sunday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised! It wasn't crowded at all when we visited which was a big plus, as we didn't need to wait very long. I got the Matcha Latte and the Turkey Sandwich. Honestly, both were delicious. The Turkey Sandwich is huge and did not skimp on the fillings, so we actually had some leftover to take home. In August 2021, they don't have honey bread, shaved ice, or bingsoo anymore on their menu, but never fear! They have lots of sandwiches, drinks, and baked goods like croffles. I tried the breakfast sandwich which had cheese, bacon, eggs, arugula, and some kind of hollandaise sauce that was sweet and garlicky at the same time. I also loved the brioche bun. To top it all off, I tried the peanut butter cream latte--it was very sweet and thick. I'd get it again but my curiosity is piqued by the bamboo latte, so I think I will get that and a croffle next time. I loved the vibes inside the cafe--it looks like a great place to do work.
