Whipping Joy Small coffee and sandwich shop in Lower Nob Hill, that also has quite a selection of baked goods, as well. We were staying nearby and both needed an afternoon pick-me-pick-me-up and decided to give this place a whirl. The Good: *Both of our drinks were good and had good flavor. The peanut butter cream latte especially had a good mix of peanut flavor with the coffee to make it like a little dessert. *Bamboo Latte had good matcha flavor and little to no sweetness, which is how I like it. The Meh: *There was one guy working the register and being the barista all at once and he really seemed to hate his job. Which is ironic given the name of the establishment. *Please make sure to tell them "for here" if you're planning on staying to drink your coffee. Otherwise, they automatically will put it in a plastic cup and you know how we really need more of those in the trash. The Ugly: *Overall the store interior was grungy and unclean. We're not usually the type of people to gripe about a little dust, but the floor had huge dust bunnies, dead flies, and ants taking care of said flies. The tables were also crummy and sticky upon our arrival. Conclusion: Decent coffee but questionable cleaning habits. read more

Dude.....after visiting SF during an abnormal intense heat wave earlier this month, I should shut up about heat waves in the Sacramento area lol. The rather delirium-inducing high humidity in SF at the time made me and my sis search for any cool-food spots in close vicinity, and, wow, the bingsoo here......one of the best that I've had. It uses silk thread shaved ice, which makes the ice even *more* melt-in-your-mouth. We particularly had the mango cheesecake thread shaved ice and although it's kinda silly that it has a thick cheesecake slab on top of the shaved ice (very YouTube-mukbang-esque lol) it made the whole bingsoo filling. Also, major props that the mango chunks are freshly cut and perfectly ripe!!! We also had the triple berry waffle. Amazingly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Not overly sweet either. The fruit in this one also tasted like it was fresh off of a farmers market. Overall very quite pleased on both desserts. Lots of care seemed to be put into them. Restaurant-tier for sure but at a low-key mom-and-pop cafe.....kinda like the best of both worlds. :p read more

Joy's place is well decorated cafe that's open late with excellent Wi-Fi. I stopped by for my go-to - an iced latte - and the beans left a mixed feeling with me. My initial taste and texture descriptions were burnt, sweet, and slightly watery. They boasted a bitter, nutty profile that had the lightest tinge of sweet from the milk. Something feels missing from the base flavor profile, and nothing quite "pops" - almost like the they're are fighting to be featured. The cup itself was also quite tiny for what it was worth. To access the Wi-Fi, you'll have to ask for the password, or it's printed out on a receipt. The staff member assisting me was not too welcoming and felt disgruntled that I had asked. The Wi-Fe is - as advertised - quite fast, and their winter theme was an enjoyable, relaxing environment to work in. I sent my boyfriend to get me a drink. Long story short, he got me exactly what I wanted, a green tea latte with almond milk and he was so happy about it because originally, I had wanted a decaf white mocha with almond milk (but this place does not serve decaf or something like that). But since he knows I usually go for a matcha latte (or green tea latte) if the first option isn't available, he felt confident with his choice and even tipped the barista/cashier (total $8.25 including the tip) When the drink was ready, my boyfriend double-checked that it was made with almond milk, as he had specifically requested from the beginning. The barista had even repeated and confirmed the order. But when my boyfriend asked again, the barista admitted he had forgotten to use almond milk. My boyfriend kindly asked if they could remake it with almond milk, but the barista said, "No, because I'll have to charge you for another drink if I change it." My boyfriend was very disappointed by this response. He quietly placed the drink back on the counter, left it there, and walked out. This kind of thing has happened to me several times at different coffee shops even at Starbucks and Peet's. But they would politely apologize and remake your drinks. I just can't fathom why a barista would insist on charging again when the mistake was theirs in the first place. It was our first time at this coffee shop, and it'll probably be our last. It's a shame because it was such a cute place, but we were very disappointed in their customer service. read more

While visiting San Francisco, we stopped by this cute shop to grab a cappuccino and a bulgogi sandwich. Plenty of seating inside. I normally skip breakfast and rarely eat beef but I'm so glad I tried the bulgogi sandwich. It was spectacular! The bread was perfectly toasted and the balance of meat to veggies was perfect. This cafe was one of the only ones open early that isn't Starbucks. They have a really small menu, and only offer 3 syrup flavors: vanilla, caramel, and mocha. An iced latte is $6.75 and alt milk is additional 50¢. The latte is okay, the espresso isn't strong or fragrant. read more

Joy's Place is a great cafe near Union Square. I happened upon this place after work one day and I've enjoyed their offerings a lot. Notable standouts: 1. When i crave lunch, I tend to frequent some of the same places closer to Mission or even Union Square as they're always within walking distance. But there was something about this Thursday...I was craving something sweet and pulled out yelp to see what places I had not tried yet and of course. I saw photos of sweet croissants with ice cream and yes, I had to. But once I entered the building, everything changed. The place is so cute, it's a coffee shop unlike any other. A nice backdrop perfect for photo opportunities, a clean and minimalist design. Forget what the headlines are telling you about San Francisco, the city is still pretty much alive in small businesses such as this. Gazing upon the menu, i immediately went for the bulgogi sandwich. How could I not? About 5-8 minutes later I had the sandwich in hand and it smelled amazing. This was STUFFED. Did I forget to say no cheese, yeah I did but I did not mind. The only thing I wish didn't happen was that the bread got soggy from all the good stuff. I became curious and wondered what it would be like to have this on Dutch crunch bread...probably as amazing. My mouth is watering just imagining the moment I opened that box...the aromas. It was like Korean bbq without the smell lingering on me. Oh; and what happened to the sandwich you ask? Well I hate one half and was so stuffed I gave the other half away. Next time I will FOR SURE get the dessert. The Nutella and ice cream is calling my name. If you haven't stopped by yet, it is worth trying for that sandwich. read more

I love peanut butter and unfortunately the peanut butter cream latte wasn't peanut buttery enough :( wish they infused the flavor into the base milk; you have to mix thoroughly just to get some pb taste. the specialty lattes are kind of pricey for the size but the sandwiches look good read more

There are many small coffee shops/ breakfast places in the Lower Nob Hill area. I think this one is one of the lower priced one where you can still get a cup of coffee for about $3. Their breakfast sandwiches are also reasonably priced around $7. Cute and clean place; service is fast.... somehow they seem less busy than most other places in the morning. Menu seems a bit limited with fewer selections than other places. Did not try their "main attraction" - the Croffle as it was too early for ice cream. But it looks like a great treat so will come back on a day when I need one! read more

Popped in here for a quick lunch on a Sunday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised! It wasn't crowded at all when we visited which was a big plus, as we didn't need to wait very long. I got the Matcha Latte and the Turkey Sandwich. Honestly, both were delicious. The Turkey Sandwich is huge and did not skimp on the fillings, so we actually had some leftover to take home. And the matcha flavor in the latte was strong, and I can tell they use a higher quality matcha. However, I will say the prices here are fairly steep. I got the regular latte. It was nothing fancy and actually tasted nothing like coffee, and it was $5.25 for a small size. It was basically just a cup in my hand to drink while I strolled around Union Square. Gentleman was nice, and a very nice interior so it's the reason for the 2 stars. Maybe this place is known for other things aside coffee, I have yet to try next time. read more

Such a great little cafe! Stopped in on a whim for a quick latte and sandwich, and was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and drinks here. The cafe itself provides a quiet, peaceful setting that is perfectly suited to reading or studying (which I noticed a few groups doing as I waited for my order). I ordered a vanilla latte and the bulgogi sandwich, and LOVED both! The bulgogi was flavorful and delicious, and the melted cheese and toppings rounded out the sandwich perfectly. The vanilla latte was frothy and creamy - I just wish I could have ordered it in a larger size! I stopped here for some brunch/lunch. I initially walked to a nearby restaurant, but it was too busy for us to finish our meal in time. I saw that this place had sandwiches and wasn't too packed, so we decided to try this place out. I ordered the Bulgogi Sandwich, and it took about 15 minutes for it to be ready. Even though I mentioned I wanted it "for here," it seemed like they read our minds because they gave it to us as a to-go order. The sandwich was pretty good and reminded me of a Subway sandwich. The bread, in particular, stood out as a step above with a nice crunch on the outside. Everything in the sandwich went together well, but I would have preferred more flavor on the bulgogi. Peanut butter latte $7 - pricey for a small cup, but it was delicious. The froth was peanut butter flavored, and i made sure i drank all of it :) It's served cold BTW Brrakfast sandwich $7.50 - pretty good but nothing too extraordinary. The brioche bun was very good. Need food or coffee between 8am and 8pm? Check out Joy's Place! Great location in Lower Nob Hill for a cafe, I've walked by Joy's Place often but never went in. In August 2021, they don't have honey bread, shaved ice, or bingsoo anymore on their menu, but never fear! They have lots of sandwiches, drinks, and baked goods like croffles. I tried the breakfast sandwich which had cheese, bacon, eggs, arugula, and some kind of hollandaise sauce that was sweet and garlicky at the same time. I also loved the brioche bun. To top it all off, I tried the peanut butter cream latte--it was very sweet and thick. I'd get it again but my curiosity is piqued by the bamboo latte, so I think I will get that and a croffle next time. I loved the vibes inside the cafe--it looks like a great place to do work. One day, I will do so, but you can also walk and eat in Union Square or Huntington Park if you're willing to brave a big hill! Service was friendly, quick, and helpful. read more

This place is literally underhyped. Any time I can get into the city I LOVE to make a stop here. INCREDIBLE food, AWESOME coffee, and the vibe is IT for me. I really enjoyed Joy's Place: it has good coffee, convenient location, good amount of seats, fast and reliable wifi and friendly staff. I went here to get coffee and a turkey sandwich. The coffee tasted strong and woke me up and the turkey sandwich was delicious and filling. I stayed to get some work done on my laptop and I found it to be a great cafe to chill at. The cafe is clean and spacious, so it's a good spot for working alone or chatting with a group. I will definitely be back here to try more of their drinks and food. read more

Decided to give this place a try because they had good reviews on Google. I was drawn to their specialty peanut butter cream latte, but it was a huge let-down. I was expecting some peanut butter to be mixed into the latte, but you're paying over a $1 more for a cold blob of peanut butter on top. The coffee itself was alright. You can find better and cheaper coffee options in the city. Based on the Yelp recommendations, it definitely seems like this place is more known for its food than drinks. read more

The Bingsoo looked great but was bland, and the "snow" was more chunky ice than soft shave. The Thai Tea Roti was also not what I expected. It came with Thai tea ice cream and sauce alongside a roti that was fried to a crunch. Interesting idea, just not the best execution. The sauce and ice cream needed a stronger Thai tea flavor to balance the crispy roti, and the flavors never quite came together. Overall, A Buttercup nails the aesthetics but misses the flavor. If you're here for the photos, you'll be happy. If you're here for the taste, you'll leave with a full camera roll and an unsatisfied sweet tooth.

We came for a factory tour, about an hour long. It was fascinating and educational to learn about the craft of chocolates from fruit to beans to the chocolate bar, and to get to chocolate taste along the way. Their work is inspiring-adding minimal ingredients to their chocolate bars so that the flavors of the cacao beans shine naturally from where they originate. After the tour, we tried the hojicha hot chocolate, the celebration cake, and the matcha cookie. For the hojicha hot chocolate, the tea flavor was subtle, but good chocolate. The celebration cake was what we expected-glad it wasn't overly sweet so that cocoa is more pronounced, but it also wasn't too rich; I felt the chocolate here in some sense lacked depth. The matcha cookie was my favorite-a cake texture matcha exterior encasing a denser brownie-like chocolate core - a delicious combo! Last thoughts to prep for the experience if you tour- 1.) Eat before you go on the tour-sampling chocolate means you do get caffeinated, and you'll likely purchase more chocolate (more caffeine!) after :) 2.) Included with the tour is a complimentary chocolate drink of choice at the end, in case you were pondering whether to buy the hot chocolate or not ;) 3.) Dandelion Chocolate products are pricey but quality. Paying the price feels like it's appreciation of their art. If you love chocolate, it's a wonderful place to visit at least once!

Plus, I Needed time to narrow down what 2 flavors I wanted. I was happy to be finally in the area and it was open! I haven't been back since the pandemic. They open late in the day and I am not here at those times until my event at the rooftop restaurant was about a block and half away on a sunny Sunday afternoon. I found the line to be wrapped around the store in the corner. Ice cream still tastes creamy and unique flavors are lovely. With two sold out flavors I decided to go with matcha Oreo and classic Vanilla Lilikoi which is Tahitian Vanilla with passion fruit which was the best flavor (most popular one - just look at the tub as most people ordered it. I would normally order the ice cream in a cup to get a better ratio of ice cream. But I decided I hadn't had a cake cone in years, so I went for that cone. It was like going back to my childhood eating ice cream with my parents. Yup this place still lives up to its name as ice cream is creamy and unique bold flavors are the draw as they make their own flavors and use fresh ingredients with 100% grass-fed, organic dairy from local Petaluma family farms. They also make a super creamy line of coconut-based vegan sorbet - sweetened with agave nectar, for a non-dairy alternative. Their tea are from Japan and Asian countries which is why the matcha ice cream tastes good. They also l pasteurize their bases. Then they slow churn each flavor with virtually no incorporation of air which creates the smooth textures and authentic flavors of the regions. Ice cream was yummy in my tummy and it gives me an excuse to hang out more down in this area for great ice creams The Mission has a number of excellent ice cream, all different in their own ways. In the old days they used to have Chimney Cone in 2017 but I never had a chance to try it. I am sure it tasted good, but it must have been labor intensive and they are a small shop. But their main selling point is focusing on the ice cream unique flavors that rotate.

I got two Matcha Soft Serves in a cup ($6.57) since my friends didn't want matcha. It felt like eating a double serving. I had never tried matcha soft serve before, and it was refreshing--perfect for a day that was neither too cold nor too hot. I was a little worried that eating that much matcha might keep me awake all night, but that wasn't the case, and I was glad. I would come back again, especially if they have another ice cream promotion in the future. Hopefully there will be another similar community event in the future.
