Being of Trinidadian descent, I'm always ready for some good Trini food whenever I'm in a city that has a spot! This establishment was huge, with a full bar, plenty of indoor seating, a separate carryout section, and outdoor seating as well. The staff was friendly, attentive, and provided quick service. The menu had a great variety, offering everything from traditional main dishes to desserts and beverages. I ordered two doubles, which were okay--I've definitely had better--but the sweet bread was delicious! My sister had the pholourie, and my mom ordered the goat roti. The roti was filling but a little too spicy, even for us, and we definitely like some heat! Unfortunately, her cassava pone was a bit dry. Overall, there were some hits and a few misses, but there's plenty more on the menu I'd like to try. I'm sure I'll be returning for more Trini delights! read more

Food was great! We have been coming here every week for many years but today , their customer service was extremely poor. The waitress (she was black and had a short pony tail and she was big too) did not greet us, looked very uninterested when taking our orders , seemed very moody and when I said " I want to order ......." She replied very coldly "WITH WHAT?" And looked at me with big threatening eyes. When she placed the orders on our table, I said thank you but she did not even respond back to me. No spoons , no fork , no plates , absolutely nothing. We were sitting at our table with the food with no utensils. I had to go up front and grab everything myself. I went to Joy's on a Friday night with a friend as she assumed there were August birthday deals ( the restaurant advertised in a way that appeared that way.) We later found out that it was an advertising error and the waitress gave us a complimentary sweet treat with our meal, which was nice ! This casual and chill place is more for the older crowd, but while we were there we noticed a lot of to-go orders throughout the night. It may have been the night we attended, but we felt like we had pure goat and sauce and portions were smaller than lunch. A disappointing experience... Joy's has been around for a long time. I hadn't been there in a couple of years and retuned for a pick up order.... Parking: easy and plentiful as it is in a secluded area of the Lauderhill Mall parking lot. Drinks: They have decent bar and traditional caribbean drinks Food: this is where they fell down. We got two curry goat rotis and they were honestly awful. Why? Because they were full of bones, had zero flavor and had way too much roti. There were a million layers of roti and just a little goat. The goat didn't even have a distinct curry flavor. It was also tough and not soft - they certainly needed to cook it longer. It was AWFUL! Service: another area where they fall down. It is a bit chaotic waiting in line to order and pick up but that is fine. What is awful is that you can't trust their timing. They told us our order would be ready in 15 minutes...it took 40 minutes. They didn't apologize either - I suppose because that is their norm. Atmosphere/vibe: great if you want a loud, casual vibe. I've been eating there since they were in their original location connected to Lauderhill Mall, and no matter how many restaurants I've visited as a chef, Joy's has always felt like home. Walk through the front door and you'll see the large photo of Mr. Vishwanath "Joy" Sawh. That picture is more than decoration--it's a reminder of the man whose kindness and passion built a place that has fed generations of South Floridians. I'm grateful I had the opportunity to meet him. He was genuinely one of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. And the food? Simply outstanding. Their doubles are, in my opinion, the best in Broward--soft, fresh, perfectly balanced, and packed with authentic Trinidadian flavor. It's no surprise they're one of the dishes people rave about over and over in public reviews. The curry goat is tender and deeply seasoned. The curry chicken is rich and comforting. The curry duck is phenomenal. The stew chicken tastes like it came straight from a family kitchen. Pair any of them with their flavorful rice and peas, curry potatoes, or curry chickpeas, and you understand why Joy's has built such a loyal following over the years. But believe it or not... my favorite side is the pumpkin. Funny enough, I used to never eat pumpkin. Mr. Joy himself convinced me to give it a chance, telling me how good it was for me. If you know what I mean I finally listened--and I've been hooked ever since. It's funny how the smallest conversations can stay with you forever. Don't leave without trying their homemade pepper sauce either. It brings just the right amount of heat while letting the flavors of the food shine. As an Executive Chef who's fortunate enough to eat at restaurants across South Florida, I know great food when I taste it. But what separates Joy's isn't just the cooking--it's the heart behind it. The recipes, the consistency, the culture, and the people have made this place a landmark for Trinidadian cuisine. Rest in peace, Mr. Vishwanath "Joy" Sawh. Joy's Roti was my first stop after returning to the states after being stuck in Jamaica due to the hurricane. My friend picked me up at the airport and asked me what I wanted to eat and I told her to surprise me. We ordered our food to go. After paying I headed to the bar and asked for a drink. We sat on the patio and talked about my adventure while we waited for our food. I ordered curry goat and was served enough for three meals. The goat was tender and tasty! It was served with potatoes which were also yummy. I used the Roti to soak up the curry sauce. I would absolutely go back to Joy's for more curry goat! Joys came highly recommended for good Trini food. I was in the area so decided to pick up dinner for me and the hubs. The menu has lots of different choices and I decided to keep it simple and try out their curry and stews. I'm no stranger to ethnic cuisines, and this being my first time trying Trini food, I chose the shrimp curry with rice for myself and the oxtail stew for the hubs. Also got 10 wings and the dhalpourie roti. Took this home and was excited to try. I will say they don't slink on the sides as each container felt like it was about 5lbs each. When I got home I realized why. The portion of rice was 3x the amount of the curry. It was packed full of rice and the shrimp curry itself was small compared to the rice portion which was small in my opinion. It was the same with the oxtail stew. Very little actual oxtail meat. The flavors of both the shrimp curry and oxtail stew was just meh for me. I have made many different versions of oxtail stew, most recently Jamaican oxtail stew and not gonna lie, it was much better than what I got from Joy's. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't as mind blowing as I was led to believe. In any case I'm glad I tried it out. I wish I had taken pictures of the food but alas, I forgot to. Onto the wings....it was terrible. I could not eat it. The batter was too thick and had an off taste to it, as if it was old batter. It just did not taste good. The Roti was flaky but very dry. It was stuffed with maybe a dhal paste but it was also very dry. It's good for dipping in the curry and stews but it was just too pasty dry for me. Overall I wasn't impressed. Okay, I gave another try after more than a year. This time I went for lunch and chose to dine in. I had a veggie paratha. It came with a aloo, chickpeas and pumpkin. I never had pumpkin with paratha and it was an interesting combo. The lady that served me was really nice and encouraged me to try some snacks. I tried an island soda as well. While waiting for the food, I had an fun chat with a customer from Trini and we ended up sharing our appetizers as well. One of the better West Indian places down here in SoFL. Lots of items to choose from, but the doubles seems to be the number one hit. I ordered a few, along with a shrimp aloo pie, and they were equally delicious. The doubles were made with everything on it, and heavy pepper. The restaurant is very spacious, lots of seating. There's a bar towards the back where you can order cocktails and beers. It's pretty standard for a Caribbean spot, nothing to fancy, just order at the front register and take out, or dine in. Staff seem friendly, but a little forgetful. 2 of the times we ordered never came out, but it was on the check, I made mention of it, and it was removed, but it was not an easy process, it took about 10 for them to figure out how to remove something from the check. Years ago, my friends and I would make plans to drive all the way from Miami to Joy's for their delicious food. It was worth the 50+ miles drive each way. Now that I'm often in Broward, I try to stop by whenever I can. It's one of my favorite restaurants of all time. I really love Bake and Shark, doubles, roti, and curry dishes. Joy's is my go-to roti shop in the area. The doubles are always solid, and when you ask for hot peppa, they give you actual heat -- nothing mild pretending to be spicy. The kurma has good flavor with a fresh crunch, the paratha roti is consistently soft, and the dhalpuri roti is always served hot and fresh. I usually order my roti separate from the curry so it doesn't get mushy if I can't finish everything in one sitting. And if you don't like dealing with bones, make sure to order the boneless chicken (bone-in really does bring more flavor, but that's a personal preference thing). They also carry a nice selection of Trini baked goods, packaged snacks, pepper sauce, and drinks to name a few. Just a heads-up: if you're looking for something quick to go, Saturday and Sunday are not going to be your best bet. They get very busy, and it basically turns into a little fete with loud music and long waits. They do offer that real trini breakfast on the weekends only though! The food is good, but the customer service is terrible. Calling ahead is a waste of time because they rarely answer the phone. If they do answer, they put you on hold and eventually hang up. Going in person isn't any better. You end up waiting forever because the cashier is either nowhere to be found or ignores you when you try to get their attention. When they finally acknowledge you, they say "hold on" or "give me a minute," but that turns into 30-45 minutes just to place your order. After that, you still have to wait another hour for your food. I have been coming to Joy's Roti delight for the last 10 years and is always amazing. Just be prepared to wait in line because the word is out on the street. So instead of waiting in line, I ordered it through one of the food delivery delivery services, and I was saddened by the quality he had gone down. It been two years since I had a good shot, and I was truly disappointed with the quality. I did order other things like doubles, and some a few other items that were still stellar the main attraction was a little subpar. This wouldn't deter me choice because everyone can have a bad night. What a nice experience! I've never had Trini food before so this was a first time for me. Went for a post church brunch with my friends and the food did not disappoint. It was quite a drive from where we were so I knew it would be worth it. I ordered a Aloo pie which kind of reminds me of an empanada but larger. It was delicious, but I couldn't finish it all because it was too much lol I ordered the curry chicken rice bowl with the peas and rice. The curry chicken was soooo good! Heavy on the curry but that flavor is so yummy! The peas and rice were also delicious and they garnish the food with some cabbage. They also gave us this type of pull apart bread for those that ordered the rice bowls, I wish I can remember what it's called but it's used to grab the food with your hands. That's the first time I've seen that but nonetheless, it was great! The rest of the table (it was about 10 of us) all said their food was super tasteful and absolutely worth the drive!
