Some restaurants serve food. Others serve memories. For me, Joy's Roti Delight isn't just the best Trinidadian restaurant in Broward County--it's a place that's been part of my life for years. I've been eating there since they were in their original location connected to Lauderhill Mall, and no matter how many restaurants I've visited as a chef, Joy's has always felt like home. Walk through the front door and you'll see the large photo of Mr. Vishwanath "Joy" Sawh. That picture is more than decoration--it's a reminder of the man whose kindness and passion built a place that has fed generations of South Floridians. I'm grateful I had the opportunity to meet him. He was genuinely one of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. And the food? Simply outstanding. Their doubles are, in my opinion, the best in Broward--soft, fresh, perfectly balanced, and packed with authentic Trinidadian flavor. It's no surprise they're one of the dishes people rave about over and over in public reviews. The curry goat is tender and deeply seasoned. The curry chicken is rich and comforting. The curry duck is phenomenal. The stew chicken tastes like it came straight from a family kitchen. Pair any of them with their flavorful rice and peas, curry potatoes, or curry chickpeas, and you understand why Joy's has built such a loyal following over the years. But believe it or not... my favorite side is the pumpkin. Funny enough, I used to never eat pumpkin. Mr. Joy himself convinced me to give it a chance, telling me how good it was for me. If you know what I mean I finally listened--and I've been hooked ever since. It's funny how the smallest conversations can stay with you forever. Don't leave without trying their homemade pepper sauce either. It brings just the right amount of heat while letting the flavors of the food shine. As an Executive Chef who's fortunate enough to eat at restaurants across South Florida, I know great food when I taste it. But what separates Joy's isn't just the cooking--it's the heart behind it. The recipes, the consistency, the culture, and the people have made this place a landmark for Trinidadian cuisine. Rest in peace, Mr. Vishwanath "Joy" Sawh. Started going to Joys when they had a space located within the Lauderhill mall.. at one point the service was on a stedy decline till it reached a point that I decided to never go again... around 2019 I met friends in the latest bigger standalone space and was impressed with the service and decided to start going again since then all my experiences have been positive. Once again one of my go to's when in the mood for trini food! On this visit my friend got a veggie roti and I got 2 doubles.. 1 with curry chicken.. we also got 2 pineapple ginger juices. The food is good, but the customer service is terrible. Calling ahead is a waste of time because they rarely answer the phone. If they do answer, they put you on hold and eventually hang up. Going in person isn't any better. You end up waiting forever because the cashier is either nowhere to be found or ignores you when you try to get their attention. When they finally acknowledge you, they say "hold on" or "give me a minute," but that turns into 30-45 minutes just to place your order. After that, you still have to wait another hour for your food. Good food alone isn't enough to make up for such poor service. read more

Joys came highly recommended for good Trini food. I was in the area so decided to pick up dinner for me and the hubs. The menu has lots of different choices and I decided to keep it simple and try out their curry and stews. I'm no stranger to ethnic cuisines, and this being my first time trying Trini food, I chose the shrimp curry with rice for myself and the oxtail stew for the hubs. Also got 10 wings and the dhalpourie roti. Took this home and was excited to try. I will say they don't slink on the sides as each container felt like it was about 5lbs each. When I got home I realized why. The portion of rice was 3x the amount of the curry. It was packed full of rice and the shrimp curry itself was small compared to the rice portion which was small in my opinion. It was the same with the oxtail stew. Very little actual oxtail meat. The flavors of both the shrimp curry and oxtail stew was just meh for me. I have made many different versions of oxtail stew, most recently Jamaican oxtail stew and not gonna lie, it was much better than what I got from Joy's. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't as mind blowing as I was led to believe. In any case I'm glad I tried it out. I wish I had taken pictures of the food but alas, I forgot to. Onto the wings....it was terrible. I could not eat it. The batter was too thick and had an off taste to it, as if it was old batter. It just did not taste good. The Roti was flaky but very dry. It was stuffed with maybe a dhal paste but it was also very dry. It's good for dipping in the curry and stews but it was just too pasty dry for me. Overall I wasn't impressed. Maybe it was an off day and maybe I'll give it another try since everyone seems to like Joy's. read more

Joy's Roti was my first stop after returning to the states after being stuck in Jamaica due to the hurricane. My friend picked me up at the airport and asked me what I wanted to eat and I told her to surprise me. We ordered our food to go. After paying I headed to the bar and asked for a drink. We sat on the patio and talked about my adventure while we waited for our food. I ordered curry goat and was served enough for three meals. The goat was tender and tasty! It was served with potatoes which were also yummy. I used the Roti to soak up the curry sauce. I would absolutely go back to Joy's for more curry goat! Okay, I gave another try after more than a year. This time I went for lunch and chose to dine in. I had a veggie paratha. It came with a aloo, chickpeas and pumpkin. I never had pumpkin with paratha and it was an interesting combo. The lady that served me was really nice and encouraged me to try some snacks. I tried an island soda as well. While waiting for the food, I had an fun chat with a customer from Trini and we ended up sharing our appetizers as well. One of the better West Indian places down here in SoFL. Lots of items to choose from, but the doubles seems to be the number one hit. I ordered a few, along with a shrimp aloo pie, and they were equally delicious. The doubles were made with everything on it, and heavy pepper. The restaurant is very spacious, lots of seating. There's a bar towards the back where you can order cocktails and beers. It's pretty standard for a Caribbean spot, nothing to fancy, just order at the front register and take out, or dine in. Staff seem friendly, but a little forgetful. 2 of the times we ordered never came out, but it was on the check, I made mention of it, and it was removed, but it was not an easy process, it took about 10 for them to figure out how to remove something from the check. Not bad! My first time trying Trinidadian Food and it wasn't bad. My favorite were the dobels, which is a chickpea dish. Wanted to try this place after a friend from Trinidad said it was really good, and it was. The menu should make everyone happy, it has plenty of choices and prices are favourable. Years ago, my friends and I would make plans to drive all the way from Miami to Joy's for their delicious food. It was worth the 50+ miles drive each way. Now that I'm often in Broward, I try to stop by whenever I can. It's one of my favorite restaurants of all time. I really love Bake and Shark, doubles, roti, and curry dishes. Joy's is my go-to roti shop in the area. The doubles are always solid, and when you ask for hot peppa, they give you actual heat -- nothing mild pretending to be spicy. The kurma has good flavor with a fresh crunch, the paratha roti is consistently soft, and the dhalpuri roti is always served hot and fresh. I usually order my roti separate from the curry so it doesn't get mushy if I can't finish everything in one sitting. And if you don't like dealing with bones, make sure to order the boneless chicken (bone-in really does bring more flavor, but that's a personal preference thing). They also carry a nice selection of Trini baked goods, packaged snacks, pepper sauce, and drinks to name a few. Just a heads-up: if you're looking for something quick to go, Saturday and Sunday are not going to be your best bet. They get very busy, and it basically turns into a little fete with loud music and long waits. They do offer that real trini breakfast on the weekends only though! I always make sure to stop by if I'm in the area, they have a wide variety of sweets and drinks as well from Trinidad The service was quicker than I expected and they picked up the phone right at 9am. I have been coming to Joy's Roti delight for the last 10 years and is always amazing. Just be prepared to wait in line because the word is out on the street. So instead of waiting in line, I ordered it through one of the food delivery delivery services, and I was saddened by the quality he had gone down. It been two years since I had a good shot, and I was truly disappointed with the quality. I did order other things like doubles, and some a few other items that were still stellar the main attraction was a little subpar. This wouldn't deter me choice because everyone can have a bad night. What a nice experience! I've never had Trini food before so this was a first time for me. Went for a post church brunch with my friends and the food did not disappoint. It was quite a drive from where we were so I knew it would be worth it. I ordered a Aloo pie which kind of reminds me of an empanada but larger. It was delicious, but I couldn't finish it all because it was too much lol I ordered the curry chicken rice bowl with the peas and rice. The curry chicken was soooo good! Heavy on the curry but that flavor is so yummy! The peas and rice were also delicious and they garnish the food with some cabbage. They also gave us this type of pull apart bread for those that ordered the rice bowls, I wish I can remember what it's called but it's used to grab the food with your hands. That's the first time I've seen that but nonetheless, it was great! The rest of the table (it was about 10 of us) all said their food was super tasteful and absolutely worth the drive! We walked in and told the girl at the counter that it was our first time trying Trini food and she had no reaction and didn't even help us with the menu. Me doing my own research and asking friends before going there is what helped us out. We ordered doubles, wontons and pholourie. EVERYTHING WAS FLAVORLESS AND STRAIGHT UP NASTY!! The curry was really good, I should've asked for a bit more pepper, it was a little mild to me. But I tried the curry goat, added pumpkin and a side of shrimp. All of it was delicious! The buss up shot was nice and soft. The pholourie was superrrr big. The biggest I've ever seen. But the tamarind sauce was delicious and paired perfectly with it. Woah! This, was, authentic. When you walk in you can see the Caribbean influences everywhere - from the street performer decorations to the lively bar on a Monday night, the complete restaurant was true to its name and filled with JOY. Ronaldo helped us learn the difference between the thicker dhalpourie roti and the thinner paratha roti and we ordered the latter with the chicken and shrimp curry. The potatoes, pumpkin, and chickpeas were top notch along with the chicken and shrimp and we were eating the roti even past being full. We also had an order of the doubles (Trinidad street food of fried flatbread and spicy chickpeas) which I would highly recommend you try. We sat down at 6, and by the time we were finishing a little past 7 the restaurant suddenly started a weekly karaoke Monday and we witnessed some of the most entertaining karaoke I have seen in some time. No where else will you see Rolly Polly breaking it down with our server Ronaldo followed up by Big Neal singing an Indian song very passionately. A fun food adventure had me and my friend smiling ear to ear for almost our entire visit and I'm sure we'll be remembering this one for a long time. This is our second time here. We went to Trinidad and Tobago this summer, and we were yearning for the good food we ate there. Look no further! JOY'S has it all! Our favorites is IN ORDER: 1. If there has to be a highlight to my trip, this was it. My dad got a taste of home, I got childhood flashbacks, and we all had good food. We started with doubles which were amazing. My stepmom has hers with chicken, but the plain was just perfect. We then ordered our roti, but got our with the skins on the side. This allowed us to eat with our hands and make each bite the way we want it. I went with oxtail, my dad had veggie, and my stepmom has the curry goat. All I can say is we cleaned the plates. Are you looking for authentic Trinidadian food, with both Indian and Chinese options then Joy's Roti is your spot. Everything on this menu is great from the fresh, made to order, alloo pies to the tasty curry shrimp, chicken, beef and even conch (when available), this is by far my go to spot when in the Lauderhill area. This place gets really busy so I would recommend calling in your order in advance to avoid having to wait for long, but if you don't, you will always be greeted with warm smiles and an opportunity to try some alcoholic beverages or fresh made juices from the Caribbean. My go to is the Pine Ginger!!! As far as the place goes, it's pretty well maintained, and while at times the music maybe considered too loud for your dining experience, it's pretty much in line with the energy of the customers.
