Eh...I ordered $175 worth of Alaskan king crab legs over Christmas break and they were underwhelming. A lot of broken legs and almost all small claws. They were not the large king crab legs that were available at other places. It was disappointing because after I unpacked them at home I went to Berkeley Bowl to grab groceries and they had king crab legs too. Their legs looked way better than the legs that I got from JR and only an extra $5 per pound. Would have been happy to pay extra for their legs. My advice would be to really look at your seafood over before you pay and walk away with you box. Ask to see the product before they swipe your card. Had I done that, I would have left the crab legs there and kept my $175 (or asked for better legs) That was my bad - don't make my mistake! JR has great prices but when you pay less for seafood it's likely because you're getting a lesser product :( I know that now! read more

I went during the supposedly open hours late morning on a weekday. Difficult to find parking and to drive around the traffic congested area. Doors were locked and walk-up window was closed shut. Went here recently to pick up some crab legs and shrimp for a seafood boil. Called ahead to make sure they had what I needed and I believe the owner answered. I was able to ask if what I wanted was in stock and came by a few hours later to pick it up. Looks like they had some other orders already boxed for customers to pick up on arrival so it that was nice knowing you could call ahead and have everything prepared. What gets them 5-stars is the fact that they brought out the entire box of crab legs to let me choose which ones I wanted and even took an extra 5 minutes to explain the different sizes of shrimp they had available. I thought this was super nice and definitely not something they had to do. I'd definitely come back for that alone :) read more

JR Seafood is a local wholesale and retail seafood distributor. I just left with the most dericious looking 2lbs of Ahi that I've seen in a long time. Hmmm. The last time I made poke, I got the Ahi in Half Moon Bay. No more do I have to drive to HMB to get good fish. JR Seafood is right here in SF! They are friendly purveyors of fine fresh and frozen seafood. You like oysters? They have more oysters you can shake a shucker at. You like tilapia? I don't. But they have tilapia. You like crab? They have more crabs than a $2 ho! They have daily specials like $8.50/lb Ahi for your Ahi Poke. (edit: Costco was $9.99/lb) If nothing else, remember this: - They only accept cash. - The American Heart Association recommends eating fish(particularly fatty fish) at least TWO TIMES A WEEK. - Fish has Omega-3 fatty acids that your heart benefits from! (Although it won't help with a broken heart. I tried!) - Consult your doctor about which fish you can eat if you're pregos. read more

You can always bet that dinner is going to be a treat when planning starts with stopping in J.R.'s to see what's fresh. The fact that I'm the first to review tells me that this market really is the secret I thought it was. I love to wander in on my way home from work, see what's in the case and pick some lovely piece of fish to cook up for dinner. They have a delicious selection of both fresh and frozen seafood and the prices are fantastic. Forget the tiny little over-priced selection at Safeway. Super markets are a pain in the ass anyway. Support a friendly mom & pop store like this and you'll eat better anyway. There is just too much to choose from in their cases. Giant fresh oysters at $0.75 each (the size of my hand), fresh ahi tuna, prawns, lobster, and on and on... For dinner tonight, I chose a pound of fresh Chilean Sea Bass. The quality was fabulous. I pan seared it and covered it in home-made mango-tomatillo-chipolte salsa and fresh sour cream. OMG! read more

Okay fine, it was better this time. But pick up your phone :( Also, there was nobody there again when I showed up, but the windows were open, but doors locked. Apparently the owner went next door to get his lunch or something. Put up a sign or something so I don't wait around for 5 minutes confused. You can pay with card but if it's a smaller amount they may ask you if you have cash. I just got 2 lbs or so of clams, and it was very cheap! About $4.93 a lb, which is very comparable to anything around. The clams turned out to be quite good, we boiled them up with a crawfish boil and all of them opened up, and they tasted quite sweet. I must have done something good, to have found this gem of a seafood wholesaler. First of all, customer service here is incredible. It's clear they know their seafood, and put the highest priority on freshness. I recently bought 5 dozen oysters for a super bowl party, and they not only sold them at a great deal, but suggested a couple of recipes, packed them in a styrofoam cooler for me, with ice, and helped load them into my truck. I am definitely coming back soon to try some the fillets. They all looked amazing. read more

two stars goes to the friendly staff, I was anticipated to buy 120 pieces of fresh blue point oysters at 815 in the morning, turns out by 9am there were none today so I would have to wait for the shipment tomorrow morning again =(. Around 11 am I came back and grabbed a bag of 60 bbq oysters , I was amazed about how nice they look, the staff even packed it in a box of ice for me and loaded it into my car. Man did the oysters tasted awful, this is not my first time bbqing oysters , even when the oysters were well done it had a funky smell after about 4 oysters I was done, five dashes of tabasco did not overcome the taste of it. I was suspecting the brand of oysters I was getting for large hama hama. After reading the recent reviews I thought so highly of this place, my expectations have gone down hill, I would never again try the bbq oysters here again. read more

Some things are just great - after all, these guys sell to SF restaurants wholesale in the early morning hours, and whatever is left sells to the general public. Prices are more reasonable than Whole Foods, Molly Stone's or Cal Mart, but their selection is sometimes limited. They gave up displaying things in the display case, so you just have to ask them to bring some out to show you. They also have some odd frozen things, like baby octopus. If you can be flexible and accept whatever is fresh that day, this is a great place. read more

Walked in and a guy greeted me immediately. Wanted to buy two crabs and he came back with two big lively ones. He ended up picking another one for me because of a missing leg. Delighted to find out they have live oysters. Not much to look at up front, but the little white board has everything I wanted written on it. Definitely coming back for some oysters next time. Just had some excellent wild Alaskan cod from here, really fresh and delicious. Good prices and substantial variety of frozen seafood, including crab meat and nice tuna steaks. A great seafood shop. Raul and Vanessa are the very helpful owners who pride themselves on their honesty about the products they sell. They showed me their clean back-room area which is a good sign for any seafood seller. While they do a lot of wholesale, you can reap the benefits of this because of the low prices and freshness of the fish. I usually call in the morning to make sure I get a piece of whatever is coming in before it gets sold to a restaurant etc. My hope is that with enough loyal customers, they can beef up their retail end for more variety...please give them a try. They told me that they can get fresh mexican scallops, but would need to sell off the 8lb in the same day. If youve ever tried mexican scallops, you know how good they are. Love the Lock Duart Salmon the oysters and mussels, Raul recommended Barramundi which is now one of my favorite fish.
