Chicago's best kept secret. JR'S is NOT a just another restaurant in a bowling alley ...it's a restaurant that happens to have a bowling alley next to it. You can't even hear or smell the bowling alley. (BTW, it is not a $$$$ cost, it's a '$') It is clean and has a varied menu for all ages and everything is made fresh with fresh ingredients. Jr's has moved to a new spot at Lisle Lanes on Rte53, but has kept the great menu, pricing and service that made us love the old location on Belmont. My go to breakfast is the country fried steak with sausage gravy, 2 eggs, potatoes and thick toast. I think they have the best sausage gravy in the western burbs. Wife gets a skillet and loves it too. One of these days we will stop in for lunch or dinner and try out the sandwiches and pizza. $15 bill for the breakfast for two I just described!!!! read more

The food is good. That's all that matters right? The great menu prices reflect the sub par service and the creepy location and clientele. It's in a bowling alley with a separate entry door as well. The place smells like old leather bowling shoes. Seat yourself. The table we sat down at was cleared but dirty. The servers rotate tables instead of having assigned areas. This lead to a long delay as they figured out who had our booth. The coffee is very weak. The portions are small. Servers are very friendly if you're a regular. We won't be. Pay up at the counter. Jr's has to be the be best kept secret in Downers Grove. Came here because a friend suggested it. We must have driven by here 100 times and never even realized there was a restaurant here. Going inside, reminds me of one of the diners I would go to as a kid. Nothing fancy, down to earth staff and an open kitchen. I opened the menu and couldn't believe my eyes at the prices. Not much in there for over $6 and plenty to fill you up for under $5! As you can see by the pictures, you get quite a bit of food. Definitely a good bang for the buck. Seriously, where else can you get a breakfast / lunch for two people for under $15 with drinks these days? I asked the owner how come they didn't have a bigger sign out front and explained that I had driven by here repeatedly and never knew they were here! Cool little spot,went in at 2:30 pm on A Saturday,we were the only customers.The place was being cleaned at the time. I counted about 9-10 tables,but each table was big enough for 4-5 people and I like that the benches were spacious.If you have a bigger belly no worries your tummy won't be smooshed here. Breakfast is served all day. I ordered the French toast with sausage,my friend ordered the 2*3 it came with 2 pancakes,2 eggs,and 2 strips of meat(bacon or sausage). We ordered a side of hash browns to share($1 for a side of hash browns awesome!!!). My French toast was average,sausage was good,and the hash browns were great.After a few bites I didn't want to share them anymore.Most restaurants don't cook the hash browns long enough,but this place gets it right .. Just add some salt and pepper when it arrives. I tasted the pancakes and they were good. The total bill for both of us after tax and the Debit card fee was $13.53,not bad at all. We didn't order drinks but I'm sure those are inexpensive too.Bring cash to avoid the 50 cent card fee. The waitress Kira was super sweet,I asked her about a sandwich and she was very honest with her response,I appreciate that.She could have lied and said it was great,but she just started and had not tried it yet.She had the right amount of attentiveness and she gave me sugar free syrup lol!! The next stop on our DG pizza quest came from a local recommendation. It is a little place that is emerging from the Belmont station construction nightmare. We ordered two pies for family pizza night: a large green pepper double crust and a thin cheese XL. We didn't feel that the double crust added much and it made that pie a little chewy. The thin crust was a better crust experience (a little crispy, which is good on a true thin crust). Both pies suffered from a sauce that was bland, and both were loaded with cheese (which was burned in a few spots). A valiant effort, but not the end of our journey. The kids loved the mozzarella sticks, staff was friendly while we waited for pickup. $39 for two pies and the cheese sticks. read more

Great home cooked, classic American diner fare! You won't find any gimmicks inside. Just a complete triple threat of a diner. Jump shot, passing skills, and defense, or in this case excellent food, service, and value. The sausage links, off the bone ham, and omelettes were all great on my first visit and I couldn't decide which was my favorite thing on my plate. The ingredients they use at JR's are top notch and was a pleasant surprise due to the value and large quantities of food you receive. Breakfast places usually give big portions, but I found my plate completely empty in no time. The ambiance is quaint, clean, and original. I cannot believe there weren't people lined up out into the street to get in. I've eaten at every breakfast spot in town, and the food here is the best/tastiest by a pretty good margin. They should be charging at least double, it is unbelievable. Donna helped us out today and was incredible, as were JR and the morning crowd that was there. Will be going back tomorrow for some lunch, and again later this week to feast on a pizza and whatever else we can. #1 pancakes and sausage in the suburbs! read more

I love their country fried steak breakfast special. Super tasty and such a great deal. One of the best I have had. Gravy has a a lot of flavor and the steak is cooked just right. Comes with eggs, perfect hash browns and toast. I haven't tried anything else on the menu because I usually stick to what I love but they all look good. read more

Great service and awesome ribeye steak! The ribeye is soft and juicy with $7.25 including coffee and toast. Their Omelet is not that traditional style. It is more like yellow/white egg skin cover over the materials. That tastes good though. The price is reasonable too! We will be back more often. read more

I love this place! My fiance and I work at the Belmont Chase center across the street from this place. We go here often. The prices are great and the service is great...even when they are slammed. I had the BEST roast beef sandwich there yesterday! It has that diner feel which I love. We just moved a few months ago from St Louis and this has been one of our regular places for lunch. JR is very friendly and will accommodate any reasonable request, usually with a joke or pun on the side. He has 2 slogans that his customers will be familiar with: cheers without the beers and come as customers leave as friends. It is evident that he holds these slogans to his heart. I have been there or both breakfast and lunch. lunch with drinks, for two for $12 cant eat that cheap for two at mcdonalds! It was worth it. I think that what will make this place shine is their breakfast. Sit down, steak and eggs with coffee for around $7. Can't beat that. Great place for cheap "mom and pops" eats. Happened across this place due to Yelp's recommendations, and while from the outside it looks like a mediocre hole in the wall restaurant, it did not disappoint. The prices were good. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger, which was very greasy but delicious. The staff were very attentive and friendly, and the food was delivered promptly. While I don't know that I'd rave about it quite as much as some of the other reviews here, it's certainly a good place for an inexpensive and tasty meal. read more

The restaurant used to be located adjacent to the Willowbrook bowling alley, 2 minutes from my house, but I have no problem with the extended trip to Downers Grove for this food.
