Our favorite Sunday dim sum choice. Probably not quite as extensive as Kirin Court, however the servers are quite friendly (will make sure your favorite cart gets to your table). There is usually a small wait around noon on Sundays as this seems to be the busiest time (11 am - 12 pm). Our last trip, we sat for about 10 minutes without a single cart hitting our table which was a bit disappointing, but typically the service seems to be pretty good. The dim sum is good, compared to what I've tried in California, Toronto, Chicago, Houston. Per person it was about 35% cheaper than Kirin court for the same plates my husband and I like to order. I had my wedding reception here. All I can say is that we impressed every guest with the food. Awesome value, flavor, and amount of food. The night was super fun, and the food was delicious :) I've also been a regular customer since 2000 when the restaurant used to be located in Richardson, TX (when their dim sum was part of the buffet, how amazing was that?) This is my go-to restaurant when I want some Chinese food. It's close by, they have take out, dim sum and all your favorite Americanized Chinese classics like Kung Pao, General Tso, Mongolian, Broccoli Beef, ect. I'm sure those are all good, but venture outside the norm and pick something from the Chef Special side of the menu. Tofu Salted Fish hotpot was especially delicious this past weekend and the sauteed snow pea leaves, schezuan green beans were all on point. I also order house cantonese crispy noodle, which is a bed of crispy fried noodles topped with brown sauce and mix of proteins and veg. SO GOOD. Dim Sum on the weekends varies, sometimes you'll see exactly what you want right away and other times you won't find the steamed pork buns until the end of your visit and you're too full to finish them.... A lot of the time you'll have to flag down a server to get your water refilled but need more hot tea? Just leave the lid of the tea pot open and you'll have more in a minute or less. Dim Sum here is great! They push carts Sunday mornings, which if you can get a seat you are in for a fantastic meal. The shrimp steamed dumpling, BBQ pork buns, Shrimp Fun Roll, chicken egg rolls are awesome and my boyfriend really loves their broccoli chicken. Definitely the go to place for Chinese entrees and dim sum! I've tried a lot of items from their menu and it usually does not disappoint. It's not amazing every time I go, but it's good enough that I'll still come back! I'd recommend seafood crispy noodles, fried rice, Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce, tofu hot pot! Tofu soup is delicious too. Dim sum wise, pretty much everything is good and they have a wide selection! As always, service is sometimes bad. But much better than most places. Sometimes they won't come around with what I want so ill order it and have them bring it to me. Hit or miss because sometimes they never bring it out. Parking is easy in this lot. Not at all impressed with JS Chens in EITHER location. My wife and I wanted to branch-out and try someplace new. We attempted to place an order by phone but the folks at both JS Chens couldn't have cared less. Before even asking my address, the lady at the Legacy and 75 location quickly stated that they don't deliver to our side of town. Hmm...how would you even know where we live since I'm calling from a cell that isn't associated with any particular address? I let her know how impressed I was with her telepathic abilities, so she asked for my zip (which happens to be 75013, Allen at Custer & McDermott). "No", she said. "You must call other location!" "Okay, the other location JUST told me to call you" I responded. "Ohhhh, try again" was all she could muster. Pathetic! You've lost new business. I love this place because it's close by and convenient. definitely not the best dim sum ever....but good when you're having a craving. service is hit or miss. sometimes i go and have amazing attentive service....sometimes it takes forever. i like sitting in the main seating area when you first walk in, the service there seems to be better....when i sit in the secondary room....they seem to be less attentive. they've got a pretty good selection of dim sum though and it gets really busy on holidays - make sure to get there either super early or really late on those days. read more

We usually love coming here. We came for dim sum at 3:00 because we did not want to dine with many other people. There were 4 other tables which was great. You would think with it being slow the service would be better. We basically had to choose between tackling someone to get service or just leave and go eat somewhere else. Went to lunch with some colleagues today from work and they picked this restaurant and i got excited when they said they have dim sum. The Restaurant wasnt super busy for lunch which meant either the items were too pricey or the food was too ethnic but i will let folks decide on that. The few patrons were asian which is also a plus sign. We sat and ordered from the menu and i must say the portions were generous and then we proceeded to the Dimsum menu but since i was ordering Lunch i only ordered one entree from the Dim sum which was the Chinese Shanghai styled dumplings which i must say when it was delivered was hot and fresh but not that great as it wasnt seasoned that well. Maybe i should have ordered the shrimp dumplings like my colleagues did. My Lunch came in a decent sized plate. My order was Sesame Chicken with Steamed Broccoli on white rice and i must say it was very tasty especially after i added some soy sauce and chili sauce to the food. It came out great. I should have ate wisely but i didnt and finished the whole plate and thats all she wrote. I got back in the office on time just to start dozing off and having neck jerking moments and later i had to suck it up and get a can of pepsi from the vending machine to wash the food down with and pray 5 o'clock came sooner. There are a lot of authentic stye dishes on the menu so i look forward to coming here again with some adventurous folks and maybe i can do a follow up review the right way. read more

I saw this place when I was going to the Asian Market next door and my mom was craving some mandoo..... So my dad just did a to-go order of the pork dumplings. It was just okay. I've had better at the other dim sum place in Richardson (see my review). It was super crowded (the whole plaza is busy actually). My dad waited over 30 minutes because other people were also having to-go orders so I suggest going way earlier than the usual lunch/dinner times or call ahead and order for to-gos. Again, the stars are not really fair, but based on everything I could not give it a 3. Maybe I'll try it again someday, but then again, I'd just probably go to the place tried and true. read more

There aren't many Chinese restaurants in Dallas that really measure up to whatever you can get in Asia. JS Chen sure does come close. They have dim sum on demand, which is really nice. Most other places have set lunch/brunch time for dim sum only. Other than the "on demand," I wouldn't go to say that it tastes better than other places. They do have these desert buns with yellow butter-like filling on the inside..one of my favorites! OH! AND they have this crab fried rice that is really really good. This used to be my favorite Chinese place, and worth the drive...but based on our last visit, not so much anymore. Hubs and I would make the 30min drive out here to get our Chinese food fix, and I've recommended this place to several friends and family... We always start with soup, hot&sour for myself, and egg drop for hubby. It's always been good. 'He loves their duck noodle soup, and I usually get the general tso chicken, it's always been fresh, hot, crispy, and just full of flavor. However on our last visit the chicken was not crispy and did not taste fresh, as if the chicken had been sitting out and they just threw some sauce on it...very questionable. I also got an egg roll last time I went, I asked for chicken and they gave me vegetable and it took over 15mins to come out when I sent back the veggie one. Service at this place always SUCKS, but that was forgiven cause the food was always so yummy...yeah...when the food is not good, and the service sucks...not cool at all. I don't know if our last visit was just a fluke and they were having an "off day". We will probably give this place another chance sometime in the future. read more

So my parents have been a lot more frequently than me, but they took me here last night for our meal together. Honestly, I am only reviewing this restaurant based off the few dishes... well, more like just a single main entree, but overall I believe JS Chen is a pretty good place to take your family/date out on a nice evening. Getting to the small dishes first, we ordered this soup (haihuang yudu geng) as an appetizer,which was pretty nice but really not that special. Then we ordered xiaolongbao and a vegetarian dish. The Xiaolongbao had potential to be very good, but they lost their juice when I tried to pick them up, which really hurt the texture imo. The vegetarian dish was 12 dollars, which was heavily overpriced for what it was worth. It tasted totally average, like something I could cook out myself (i am not a very strong chef). All the mostly forgettable dishes aside, the main entree was what really got me (and in a way, save this restaurant from receiving a less than 3 star rating). The crab rice (pictured) was absolutely delicious. The portion size was HUGE, so don't expect to eat this yourself. The seasoning was really well mixed with both the rice and the crab legs. UMMM!! It's a really perfect entree to eat with a group of people. There are several downsides to the dish, however. For one, it cost 45 bucks. If you share with 3 other people, you will still have to pay 11 bucks for the meal you eat, which honestly is probably not that great of a deal. Secondly, and this may be a personal thing, but crabs are tedious to eat. Expect your hands to get pretty dirty. Lastly, it takes a while to cook. I think we had to wait for a good 15-20 minutes for this dish to come out. This can also be a plus, though, since it probably means the cooks had to cook the entree from scratch/live crabs. In all, my impression of JS Chen really only revolves around the crab rice. All the other dishes here are very average and somewhat overpriced. The crab rice itself is EXTREMELY pricey. However, if you ever have a chance to get a really nice meal without having to kill your wallet (company dinner? ;) ), definitely hit this place and order the crab rice! PLUS: Crab rice!!!! If you don't want to hoof it out to Richardson for dim sum, this is a great alternative. They have all your standard dim sum dishes here and it's pretty decently priced. I have noticed over the years that their cart service has improved. It used to be that once you refused a cart, they would never come back. This isn't the case anymore, and I am thankful for it! I appreciate the persistence of the staff and that they can explain (more or less) what each dish is. We were deceived into thinking a dessert was filled with pineapple when it was really filled with black beans, but we still thought it was delicious. I wouldn't say that there is anything particularly unique to this place that you MUST TRY and order, but everything tastes great and comes out fast. Can't complain - give them a visit! read more

Sure this place doesn't have the same amenities as Kirin Court, however, why give yourself a reason to complain when it basically complements the same menu and you also get a better hot sauce to accompany your meal? I have now been here 2 times for dim sum so I think I can speak intelligently about my experience. My 3 stars is an average of my 2 trips. Today was a 2 star kind of day and my first visit was 4 stars. The first time I went was a weekday. They don't do carts on weekdays so everything is made to order. At first I was a little annoyed but once it started arriving and I tasted it fresh from the steamer I was sold. It was all hot and delicious. We even order some beef chow fun from the regular menu and it was good. It even beat the dim sum food out of the kitchen. Today is Sunday and while I didn't go during dim sum prime time they still had the carts going. Here is where their dim sum takes a horrible turn. The only thing that tasted good was the BBQ pork chow fun because they made special for us. Everything else had a weird aftertaste and most of the rice wrappers were hard and dry. Needless to say I regretted ordering as much as I did. The kids didn't even eat all of their chow fun and usually they have seconds. But, I don't remember disliking it, which is a good sign. I went recently for a banquet. There were at least 100 people in the dining hall, and they handled us extremely well. By the time I left, there were 5 dishes brought out - and they were still coming! The food was excellent. Roasted duck, amazing. Squid balls, amazing. Some other things that I'm not sure what they were, amazing. Only negative - SALT. I was bloated within ten minutes of eating this stuff! Oh well, it's a price you pay for good Chinese! Waited for 2 hours for our food, kept asking servers on the status. Each time they told us they were checking, but none of them ever came back to us. 2.5 hours later, after escalation they found out order, but would not tell us when it would be filled. We paid for the tea and left. Spending a total amount of 3 hours in a restaurant without getting food and without an estimate of when it would arrive is not acceptable. Ordered some to go dishes on Christmas day for family gathering. Overall food were OK, one particular item was horribly disappointing, not that it tasted bad, it's the amount served for the price. It's the Peking duck dish which I have had in numerous Chinese restaurants. Here they charged about USD 29 , there were only about 20 pieces of thinly sliced meat in the to go box. This is my favorite place to get dimsum in Dallas! Overall, the dimsum here is really good. I used to come here all the time when I lived in Dallas, and this place never disappoints! Typically I order the har gau (steamed shrimp dumplings), siu mai, cha siu bao (pork buns), shrimp/beef cheong fan (rolled rice noodles), turnip cake, taro cake, steamed ribs, and some kind of vegetable. Those are all very traditional dimsum dishes. As for dessert, a very common dish is the egg custard tart and tofu pudding (topped with a ginger sauce which is delish). In fact, probably our favorite dim sum in the DFW area The place could use a good deep clean and from the outside, the curtains and windows are filthy and trashy - if we didn't know the place well, we might not ever go in just from the outside. If you are looking for a personable service experience, turn and walk away now. If you can get over the fact that the food is pretty good but don't expect much from your server, then you will have an enjoyable experience.
